Solar GPS Logger

Here’s a cool little project that stores data into an SD card using solar power.

After some prodding from customers and an upcoming prototype run I decided to throw in a little breakout board that would allow 2 solar panels to be connected in parallel to a 7805 linear regulator. An LED was added with a switch so the user could identify when the board was making power. These boards can output 8V@300 mA and should easily provide more than enough votage and current to charge the batt

DIY HACK – Cheap high voltage

Check out this cool DIY you can make some cheap high voltage.  I’ve always wanted to do this at a low cost but here it is!

What you see here is a spent propane torch tank with a 1-inch (2.5cm) ball bearing glued to it with a 1/4-inch (6mm) bearing glued to that. I stripped the propane tank with paint stripper, but this is unnecessary as you can just scrape off the paint where the ball bearings go. The Leyden jar is just a common quart sized polyethylene bottle cut off at the top. The

Check out this Wii hack, someone got a Nintendo Wii to play on iPod!

Just playing some Wii… on my 60GB iPod. Basically in a nutshell I just rewired my dock with the lightbar from the Wii. Then running linux and a app that I installed on the iPod, enabled it for live video stream via the 30pin dock connector (ie. instead of video out I can have video in) Then with a few splicing of the composite video connectors and some electrical tape to convert it to the S-Video jack on the back of the dock. The audio was passed through to a

DIY HACK – How to make a Solar Cooker using an old satellite dish

Check out how you can build your own solar cooker using an old satellite dish!

The basic idea was to use a satellite dish and rivet sheet aluminum to it. This is because a satellite dish is already a paraboloid shape with a pretty exact focus. The sheet aluminum was to be cut into triangular pieces and then be drilled in 3-5 places for the rivets. They would conform to the shape of the paraboloid and not lessen the integrity of the focal point. We wanted the

Cool touchscreen video walls!

One of the characteristics of a successful natural interface is the reduction of cognitive load on people interacting with it: from a presentation perspective, the form of the representation of content is designed to minimize this amount, by reducing the number and the complexity of the stimuli, and allowing a straightforward interpretation of the whole perceived by the subject; from an interaction perspective, this is done by allowing people

DIY – How to build a boat!

Yes, one of my personal goal in life is to own a boat some day but here’s how you can make one from scratch!

I was looking for a double ended rowing / sailing beach cruiser that two people could use for extended camping in semi protected waters. Ben Fuller brought this design to my attention. The boat is similar to a Swampscott dory but carries a bit more waterline, a rockered keel, a fuller hull section, and an external skeg. The boat f
