As an avid DSLR fan (as of 6 months ago when I bought my Canon 7D), here’s a totally awesome DIY SLR should rig you can make that also comes with a soft-focus control. I have seen a slew of DIY steadicams but one problem with steadicam is that you must carry it on your hands, making long videos painful on your joints.
I have seen every professional cameramen using camera shoulder rigs but this one is the best I’ve seen, as far as ones you can make yourself, might be a good idea to call your dad to get some help on carpentry.
