Solar Powered Bike!

Bike Powered by Sun

Wow, check out this neato bike that can power itself using the power of the Sun!

The E-V Sunny Bicycle has light absorbing Solar panels built right into the Wheels, creating continual power from the Sun’s Rays, and maintaining a constant charge to the batteries. The bike is propelled by a 500 watt front hub motor.

major fail. this is a total spoof. Only a complete idiot would put the solar panels in the wheel – they’d get dirty, and the electrical connections would be a disaster, not to mention the current-limiting shading intrinsic to this design. And you’d use a much lighter bike than a Norco. wheres the motor? Where’s the battery? The badly photoshopped PV wheels don’t even reflect it’s environment accurately, not to mention that solar panels aren’t supposed to be reflective. Lastly a 500 Watt motor without a battery needs a 500Watt panel. At current efficiencies the best solar panels would still be around 30 square feet of panels. And do you know how big a 500W motor is … believe me … you’d see it. The panel plus the motor and battery together should come to at least $1500, then you add the bike, then the engineering, then the manufacturing, then the overhead, then the retail markup. Final cost: $5000.

Actually the way to do this is to mount the panel on your house to feed the grid, then plug your bike into the grid anytime you need to charge the batteries. Ideally the net sum would be 0 – meaning that you’re using as much electricity as you’re producing … ie. solar powered bike. It doesn’t make sense hauling around a big panel (and that’s what it would take) to power a bike … too heavy and awkward – would be a wind sail.

    So I say: major fail.
