Data Browser allows you to manipulate MySQL database in a Snap!

Posted in Blog, Cool, Educational, Web, WebApp by max on the May 11th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Here’s a desktop based data browser that allows you to manipulate MySQL database in a snap.  The most amazing part is how quickly you can bring in any RSS feeds from blogs/social network sites as a database table, almost as fast as my finger snapping.

Watch as David, the CTO of the company, explains how it works.

As you can see in the video interview, Kirix Strata lets users view, organize, and manipulate data tables with desktop speeds and ease.

Although you could make a similar webapp, it wouldn’t perform as fast since you’d have to constantly connect to a web server.

Kirix Strata solves all that, and as a programmer myself, I am impressed at how quickly you can manipulate data. (If you watch the end of the video, you will see how quickly Strata can bring is RSS feeds to a MySQL table)

Now, there’s a LOT of applications that the Strata could be used for such as organizing your web database without coding, importing your database to your desktop, manipulating the database at desktop PC speed, and tons more.

This application is really geared towards those web programmers but if you are able to get the drift, this app is amazing and seems to have a bright future.

How to Graffiti your Website and Download an Image QUICK!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Entertainment, Freeware, Funny, Graphics, Music, Web, WebApp by max on the May 7th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

My blogger friend Jason Striegel from Hackszine sent this cool graffiti tool.  It’s a webapp that let’s you spray paint any website.  In my case, I had to pick Google.com and graffiti Zedomax.com with gold spray paint:

Graffiti your website!

Now, this is a really fun thing to do as your finished artwork stays on the site and you can also download it.

If you are on a guest computer and without Photoshop, this could easily be a simply tool for writing stuff over website screenshots, of course all in great gravy graffiti spray cans w/o cops busting you.  (There’s also some good rap music from Minneapolis group Atmosphere while you tag Google…)

Here’s a site that lets you crank out some graffiti any web site.  I was one of the developers on the project, so I’m trying to spread it around to all my blogger friends.  This was a promotion for the Minneapolis group Atmosphere, so you can tag the web while listening to some free tunes from their latest album.

Beer Stock Market - Internet User Venture Capital!

Beer Stock Market - Internet User Venture Capital!

Hi all,I’ve been busy building this “online stock” market over at SiteHoppin.com.

Go check it out as we just launched it…and I need some rest from 5 straight days of ridiculous coding…

SiteHoppin Beer Stocks are “internet stocks”, we call IUVC (Internet User Venture Capital), that allow you to buy into our new company without having to invest millions, unlike Venture Capital.

Basically, when you buy Beer Stocks, you become co-owners of SiteHoppin.com. We probably won’t let you run the site, but we are giving every internet user an opportunity to invest in one of the fastest growing web sites on the internet.

You can read more about it on our Beer Stocks FAQ.

How to start your own 125×125 banner exchange!

Posted in Advertising, Business, Cool, Web, WebApp by max on the March 15th, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Why Spottt will die a horrible death unless they do something about it

I have been experimenting with many 125×125 pixel banner exchange programs including Spottt, Nuacco, 125exchange, and etc…etc…

What I have found in my study is that these banner exchange programs don’t work and will fail in the long term.

Why?

Because this system has been in place for a long time, it’s not a new technology.

If you don’t believe me, you can even go download a free version of Easy Banner Pro, which Nuacco and 125exchange runs on.

Heck, I could probably start a 125×125 banner exchange tomorrow. Simply download the script then install it on your server, and blog about it.

Spottt, on the other hand, is exact same technology and exact same figures. They just have more money in their pockets to feed some Fortune journalists or maybe they know someone there. Props though for getting such “low technology” onto Fortune, they do have clever people who are good with words obviously.

Entrecard is probably the guy who “changed” that exchange by adding community interaction such as “dropping” cards. This is good and Entrecard will probably live a long life.

Lol…that’s why we made SiteHoppin Beer Widgets, it’s slightly different in that you get “clicks” exchange, not impressions. Plus, you get to earn Beer Credits and get to go play with them. (We should have some gambling games soon so hold on…)

Plus, SiteHoppin is not simply a banner exchange, it allows any internet users, to view the web like an iPod.

Anyways, enough rambling about our SiteHoppin and banner exchange systems that will never work, do you like our new Zedomax Wordpress theme?

Well, I am still working on it, well… “everything” is a work in progress, including this blog itself.

If these Spottt guys want to actually get some real traffic, they better start updating their site more and this is an honest opinion, not simply bashing on someone else’s business. If they take my advice and start doing something about it, they might live I guess…not that I give a ****.

Blog Advertising - Beer Widgets for free traffic to your site!

Posted in Advertising, Cool, Web, WebApp by max on the March 12th, 2008 at 7:13 am

Blog Advertising - Beer Widgets for free traffic to your site!

Hi all,

I’ve been a little busy with building some beer widgets that give you free traffic to your site.

You can get these cool beer widgets that give you 50 Beer Credits which you can use 10 Beer Credits to get 1 unique visitor to your site.

In simple words, you send 1 click through the beer widget to SiteHoppin and SiteHoppin sends you 5 clicks. It’s the best exchange ratio that exists on the internet today so go grab your beer widget.

It’s sorta like a traffic exchange program except there’s also lots of users who are there to find new sites.

Oh yeah, the first 50 people to put the widget get a “lifetime” rotating banner ad (125×125 pixel) on SiteHoppin sidebar, a deal you must not miss. (There 7 widgets up so, you still got chance if you act early.)

Here’s the link to the details.

Oh kay, enough with Beer Widgets, I will be posting more cool tech stuff starting tomorrow after I do my taxes, and take care of some stuff.  Cheers~

Here’s an interesting web app that Yahoo’s workin’ on that will bring not only instant messenger service but all type of social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, etc…etc… Looks pretty good, not that I’d use it.

Yahoo demonstrated its upcoming oneConnect service at MWC 2008 held in Barcelona, Spain. It will be the first mobile product with an open architecture that aggregates communications tools such as email, instant messaging (IM), text messaging (SMS), and social networks.

Yahoo! oneConnect includes following features like Socially-connected address book, Integrated mobile messaging, Status, Pulse, Favorite and many more.
This service is expected to become available in Q2, 2008.

DIY Linux HACK - HOW TO optimize your Wordpress Blog, MediaWiki, or any other high load website with Compression!

Posted in Blog, CPU, Computer, Linux, Ubuntu, Web, WebApp, Wordpress by max on the February 24th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Well, we did a lot of server hacking before with some MySQL, eAccelerator, and httpd.

There’s a lot of major blogs out there I have checked using Web Page Compression Tool that are not using compression. (For one, I checked John Chow’s blog)

Try to check one of your posts instead of checking your main URL as the tool is funky with root domains. (e.g. Check http://zedomax.com/blog/2008/02/23/never-give-up-especially-your-blog-dude/ instead of http://zedomax.com)

Here’s a screenshow of compression test I did for one of John Chow’s posts:

a

As you can see, John Chow’s blog does not use compression. As a result, he’s losing out on almost 5 times of bandwidth!!!

With level 9 compression, his site could be loaded on your web browser at 21K instead of the whopping 100K.

Now the compression might not be for all of you with slow CPUs. Our Zedomax.com runs on Quad-CPU server which has a lot of CPU processing power.

Here’s a screenshow of my server under normal load:

DIY HACK - HOW TO optimize your Wordpress Blog, MediaWiki, or any other high load website with Compression!

As you can see, most of the time, my CPU is idling at 80.8%! That means my CPU is pretty much sitting on its ass instead of doing work for me.

Now, if you have a similar situation, compression will help your site load faster and also bring your load down so you can handle more traffic.

Here’s how to enable compression if you have a dedicated or access to root on your server:

(Most servers have zlib installed, if you don’t have zlib installed, you will have to install that first, you can check it by making a test file and putting <?php phpinfo() ?> and search for zlib)

Add the following lines to your /etc/php.ini:

zlib.output_compression = on
zlib.output_compression_level = 5

and then restart apache! (of course):

httpd -k restart

Now, go check one of your posts on the Compression Test Tool here.

b

As you can see above, I just compressed one of my blog posts by a whopping 76.1%!

If you are using Super Cache plugin for Wordpress, make sure to go to options and do this too:

Enable Super Cache Compression

Now, your server will run faster since there’s less data being transmitted to your visitors, meaning you save bandwith, time, and most importantly, the ability to handle more traffic.

At 70% increase in bandwidth, that could translate to that many more visitors too as bandwidth is directly proportional to amount of time a visitor stays on your site. (Yes, I did take Calculus in college, I failed miserably before passing.) The less time a visitor takes to load a page on your blog or your site, the more time and bandwidth you have for other visitors.)

I was searching through the web for many ways to use compression for server optimization but I couldn’t find any so I sort put everything together here.

Hopefully, it helps you.

And one more thing, you can also check out this great tutorial on your httpd.conf setup.

You can always check out HOWTO decrease load on your server by 5 times also.
