Nokia N78 Released in the US for $560!

Yey, Nokia N78 released today for $560.  I am not about to get one as I have tested this model at the Web2.0 show earlier this year and the browser really sucks…  But I think you could put Opera Mini on it…

Linux May Power New Nokia Phones

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Gadgets, Nokia, cell phones by max on the May 25th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Here’s some great news for Nokia phone users that Nokia may start using Linux to power their new phones.

Why do I think it’s great?

Well, I’ve looked at every new Nokia phone at the Web2.0 2008 and sadly, they all really suck and incorporate outdated technology.

Don’t get me wrong, Nokia does make great hardware, but their software sucks and it’s clear that it may never improve with the proprietary operating system they are using.

For the major ding, the new Nokia phones come equipped with very very horrible web browser. The web browser doesn’t even support CSS standards or Flash. Now, iPhone did revolutionize the standard for web browsers on cellphones and everyone should at least keep up to a certain level.

But again, this is good news for consumers as Nokia will be now using a operating system that may just catapult their phones to another level.   Better yet, they could probably just use Google’s Android, which is a Linux operating system with plenty of built-in apps.   Mind you, Nokia did a great job not going to a Windows mobile platform, which horribly sucks too with an IE mobile browser that has not been upgraded for years.

As consumers, we need to fight back and stop using outdated technology.

STOP BUYING MICRSOFT BASED PHONES!!!

PARIS (Reuters) - The world’s top handset maker Nokia Oyj expects the role of the Linux operating system in its product portfolio to increase as the role of its Internet-focused devices grows, company officials said.

Linux has so far had little success on cellphones, but its role is increasing as more new Linux-based models reach the market, while Google Inc gave it a vote of confidence by using it to build its Android platform on.

The iPhone Gets Its Own Photo Sharing Site

Posted in Consumer, Web, WebApp, cell phones, iPhone, photography by max on the May 6th, 2008 at 6:59 am

The iPhone Gets Its Own Photo Sharing Site

Natuba is a photo sharing site for iPhone users. Looks like this targetted marketing could work but of course, there are many other online services that let you do the same thing Natuba does already. Too bad they didnt’ take care of tagging, a must in a new Web2.0 service. Regardless, you can tell us how well it works with your iPhone.

iPhone users with Natuba accounts can add their snapshots to the site by emailing them to a special address. Descriptions can be included in the subject line and all photos are injected into a public activity stream. They are also included on one’s profile page and are candidates for the “Surprise Me!” page that randomly displays one photo at a time from the site.

The idea and execution are simple, perhaps a bit too simple. There’s no tagging, not to mention no geotagging (which would be a natural feature for such a service, if only iPhones had GPS already). I’d like to see the site add rating capabilities so the community can surface the best snapshots. After all, highlighting the coolest little encounters from daily life should be the site’s main thrust; no one wants to sift through the mundane.

Google doesn’t care about Mexican people?!?

Posted in Google, News, Web, Yahoo by max on the May 5th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Google doesn\'t care about Mexican people?!?

Lol… Google doesn’t care about Mexican people?

Well… that might be over-analysis. Did you know that 5/5 is also Children’s Day in Korea?

With the high number of Latino community, I believe Google could have easily given their custom graphics to celebrate the 5/5 day.

Oh well, every day is a new day. The richer get richer, the poorer get poorer, doesn’t that ring a bell in the Web2.0 world?

Ask.com bungled the spelling of Cinco de Mayo, but at least they made an effort. Pictured here are Yahoo’s animated mariachis and dancers. But Google, the company well known for its holiday flights of logo fancy? Nada. Yes, it’s actually a minor holiday south of the border. But the victory in Puebla over the French has gone unnoticed in the Googleplex for the ninth year running.

HTC Diamond, is this for real now?

Posted in Consumer, Design, Gadgets, cell phones by max on the May 5th, 2008 at 12:28 pm

HTC Diamond, is this for real now?

Ever since the invent of iPhones, most other cellphone manufacturers have become obsolete in terms of “web browsing” capability.  HTC, usually based on Windows Mobile, have kept surprising me with their outdated mobile IE browser that does not support any of Web2.0 technologies including AJAX.

Well, as a previous owner of HTC, I hope they finally move onto another mobile OS platform like the Android from Google, or they will ultimately fail to capture attention of fast-movers like me.  Their sales still comes from 90% of Asian population or non-techies that don’t know jack about browsing on the go.

Looks are not everything, performance has to come with it.

The first “official” photos and specs for the HTC Diamond have been leaked, complete with a 640 x 480 pixel screen (twice the lines of the iPhone in smaller surface) and 3G connectivity. Could this be the most important product of the year HTC said it would reveal in London on Tuesday?

Web2.0 Expo - Stewart Mader from Wikipatterns Interviewed!

Posted in Blog, Business, Cool, Educational, Social Networking, Video, Web, WebApp, Wiki by max on the April 24th, 2008 at 12:14 pm

free-book

If you don’t know wikis, it might be a good time for you to get familiar as wikis have not been fully utilized as blogs have been. (Before you know it, the world will become a “wiki wiki” world…)

As a wiki fanatic myself as I have built the world’s first-ever MediaWiki based social networking site, I am a collector of any new books related with wikis in general.

One of the books that I haven’t gotten a hold of was, wikipatterns by Stewart Mader, creator of wikipatterns.com. I am a big fan of anyone who’s creating new sites with wikis so…

What intrigued me about his creation Wikipatterns.com, is the idea itself, not really the software built on it. I am still dumbfounded about what wikipatterns exactly is but Stewart was nice enough to explain it to me in plain English at Web2.0 Expo today:

Click Here to View in Full Screen Mode

(Thanks Stewart, and thank you for the book! I love wiki books, make sure to check out my wiki creation too, SiteHoppin.com!)

Stewart also runs Grow Your Wiki blog, check it out as it has lots of interesting stuff for all you wiki lovers.

I will probably do another write-up after I finish the book so hold on while I get all that wiki stuff in my head and spit it back out to you readers in plain English.

Wikipatterns, btw, is based on Wiki software by Atlassian, a company who specialized in Enterprise Wikis.

We will have a short video re-cap by Atlassian’s president, Jeffrey Walker in a little bit, explaining further the advantages of using wikis to replace e-mails and documents.

What do you think, will Wikis be the future of mass collaboration? (If it isn’t already?)
