Yey, it seems like the O2 iPhone is available in UK now. Let’s take a look…

So, what’s it like? Well, apart from the o2-engraved box, the UK iPhone is, externally, identical to the US version, which we reviewed back in August. The biggest modification is on the inside and is something that will have nerdgeeks sprinting to online forums in a message-posting furore. We can reveal that the UK iPhone is, in fact, installed with firmware version 1.1.2. Oh, how we wanted to post picture proof last week but would have run the risk of Steve Jobs personally removing our knackers. As well as more keyboard character sets, the updated firmware will have addressed security issues and minor bugs: Great for news overall stability, but it is likely to cause yet another uproar in Apple’s loyal fanbase, as Apple is sure to have closed up the security loopholes (such as the TIFF exploit) which allowed people to hack the iPhone to run their own software.

Remember Chumby?

Here’s a cool video.

Meatbot-in-chief of RobotsRule, Robert Oschler, sent us this extremely silly vid of i-SOBOT interacting with the Eyeball Widget on the Chumby. There’s something very Marcel Duchamp for the 21st century about the whole thing.

Styrofoam cup vs deep sea pressure

Posted in Chemistry, Consumer, Cool, Educational, Entertainment, Funny, Video by max on the October 27th, 2007 at 2:27 pm

Wow, check out what happens to a styrofoam cup when simulated to deep sea pressures.

Looks pretty cool doesn’t it…On the surface, at an atmospheric pressure of 14.7 pounds per square inch, the cup stands 4 inches tall. As the remotely operated sub descends, the pressure compresses the Styrofoam and the cup shrinks. Below 3,000 feet, under pressure 100 times greater than that at the surface, the cup shrivels to about half of its original size.

Cool nice little wiimote Robot…

This robot is composed of Legos and uses a handyboard as the control hardware. It has 4 wheel drive each controlled by a lego motor, and a pan tilt mount for directing light and the video camera. The Wii Remote talks to a MacBook Pro over bluetooth to modified DarwiinRemote software, and the computer in turn communicates with the robot over a serial port. This robot was designed for and used in a small scale demonstration of Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) as an assignment in Intro to Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. Designed, built, and programmed by Andrew Hundt, Boris Lipchin, and Ned Fox at CMU.
