Wagg It - Blog Voting Community

wagg it

We have been messing around with Pligg, a digg-like social CMS (content management system).
First we made wagthis.com hosted on Dreamhost but after running for a month the shared server seems to go down a lot.
Since then, we made a new one with better hardware on wagg.it.
(It took us like a month to register the domain name through a european registry but we were finally able to get it working…)

It’s a blog voting community where you can submit your blog posts and other bloggers can vote on posts. It’s still experimental at this point but check it out and if your blog post in on there, make sure to wagg it!

Check it out and leave your thought on how we can make it better.

You might have notice the Wagg It widget on our posts, you can get one too here:

(Help us promote our new blog voting community if you have a blog.)

Go Wagg somethin’

Wagg It is a user driven “social blog content” website. What the heck does that mean?
Well, every news on Wagg It is a blog post submitted by waggers (that would be you).
After you submit your content from a blog, other people read your stuff and wagg on it. (Like your dog waggs whenever he/she sees something new)
If your story gets enough waggs, it gets promoted to the front page for all other waggers to see. What can you do as a Wagger?
Every wagger can wagg(help promote) on stories and submit new stories from any blogs.(Think of it as Technorati except you can vote on it.)
Want to share a video or news story with a friend? Wagg it!

Zaragoza Solar Hot Water System

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Earth, Educational, Industrial, Solar by max on the February 19th, 2007 at 3:12 pm

solar heater

Check out this Zaragoza Solar hot water system used in a desert oasis town.  They also have lots of other cool stuff like the solar heating system for pools.

The complete solar hot water system involves heat exchange between three liquids:

  • Solar collector fluid. The fluid which is heated in the solar collector (above, fig. 2) and which flows into the heat exchanger unit (see figs. 3 and 4), and back into the solar collector by thermosiphon. Antifreeze (anticongelante) is used as the solar collector fluid because it exchanges heat readily, and to prevent fluid from freezing in pipes and bursting them in winter. Alyssa Grassi and the 2006 project team have both reconsidered the necessity of antifreeze in this design, as Parras winters, while they very occasionally bring snow, are reportedly mild. Additionally, there are exposed pipes at Zaragoza #1 which carry water from the street, and these pipes appear not to have posed any problems.
  • Intermediary heat exchange liquid. Water held in heat exchange unit. This intermediary fluid is necessary because of the hazards antifreeze can pose to human health. If, for some reason, the antifreeze circuit were to burst, its fluid would be released into the intermediary heat exchange fluid in the heat exchanger, not into the household flow.
  • Household-bound flow.

City water flows into the rooftop system through exposed metal and PVC pipes.

HACK - Hacking the PS3

Posted in Cool, DoItYourself!, Entertainment, Games, Hack, Linux, ps3 by max on the November 27th, 2006 at 1:09 am

There are way to hack the PS3 via Linux:

You can now dump your BlueRay images into ISO format using Linux on your Playstation 3. All that is required to drop the images onto your 60GB hard drive is to run the following command “dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/imagename.img”. So far there is no way to play your backed up games, but this is a good start.

Well if you get further into hacking the PS3, you can always create a dual boot system.

Linux seems to prove itself as a good hacking tool for any system although we are still really “hacking” and there is no retail Linux solutions.
Hurray, thumbs up for Linux and Linux hackers!

DIY HOWTO - Linux Temperature Monitoring using the DS1820

Posted in Circuits, Cool, DoItYourself!, Hack, Linux, Microcontroller by max on the November 24th, 2006 at 10:37 pm

http://zedomax.com/image/200611/linux_temperature.jpg

Here’s how you can make your own Linux Temperature Monitoring system coupled with a DS1820
chip using the 1-wire communication protocol. Note that you could easily do this with a Basic Stamp,
which supports 1-wire protocol and just simply add a serial LCD.  But if you are a Linux lover like us,
you will want to try this out, maybe using an embedded Linux system like one from Atmel.

Check out STK1000 video and running Doom on STK1000, which is one of the best embedded Linux
platforms out there.  The AVR32, which is the processor for the STK1000, does outrun most ARM
processors.

Cat detection/repellant device - Timer delay circuit for motion detection system

Posted in Circuits, Cool, DoItYourself!, Earth, Hack, Microcontroller by max on the November 6th, 2006 at 2:02 pm

Well here’s a cool little cat detection and repellent device using a sprinkler
controller and some timer delay circuits.  I think there’s a lot of timer delay circuits, especially the 555
being used for a lot of these DIYs, but I think it would be easier to do with BASIC controllers…
OR you can probably just buy a ultrasonic rodent repellent for under 40 bucks.
But that would really take fun out of life if you could buy everything out of your life…

Wow, maybe I can merge my sprinkler system and motion sensing alarm system
to make an alarm system that deters using sprinklers…just an idea.

Well, I got bit by a wild cat before and had to go to the doctor for rabies, where I
didn’t get a shot because I said “F&*@ it” but I guess the cat didn’t have rabies since I am still alive…
(Yes, thank God I am still alive!)

Not too long ago I had seen a floodlight motion detector connected to a sprinkler to discourage deer and other animals from raiding a garden. I had recently installed a sprinkler system, so I purchased a wireless driveway alert system and put the two to work. To allow enough time for the sprinkler valve to open, build pressure, and activate the sprinkler head, he constructed a time-delay unit from an old standby 555 timer. It activates the sprinkler valve with ac power from the control for 10 to 12 seconds — allowing plenty of time to open and apply a good H2O dousing to varmints and wayward mailmen alike
