MIT Students Develop Solar Dish Capable of 1000X Sun Power!

Here’s a cool solar dish that is capable of “vaporizing” water the second you hit the apex of its dish. The MIT students have already formed a corporation, there’s no telling when this will be available for homes and offices.
The results are staggering — the completed mirror focuses enough solar energy at its focal point to melt solid steel. The energy of typical sunlight is concentrated by a factor of 1,000. This was showcased during a demonstration, in which a team member held up a board, which instantly and violently combusted, when brought within range of the focal point.
Solar Powered Glowing Flower Pot!

Wow, check out this awesome solar powered glowing flower pot that conserves the sun’s energy during the day and glow the pot itself at night. This might be useful at replacing those outdoor lights with a double-whammy pot/light.
The length of time the pot glows is dependent on the amount of sunlight the solar panel is exposed to during the day, but in the UK you’re looking at about 6-8 hours in the summer and 2-4 hours in the winter - more than enough for your average evening garden soiree.
DIY - How to Dry Your Cellphone with Rice!

Well, I have dropped my cellphone in water bunch of times before and all I had to do was to let the phone dry for about a day or two to make it work again. If you dropped your phone in water, you might want to consider dipping it in a bowl of dry rice and the rice will absorb any water remaining in your cellphone.
The most important thing to remember is to avoid heat. That means no hair dryers, ovens, microwaves or extended periods in direct sunlight. While heat will certainly evaporate the moisture, it could also warp components and melt adhesives. Those fragile glues are also why you’ll want to avoid dunking the phone in rubbing alcohol (an oftprescribed tip on the Web). Alcohol is a solvent and can dissolve the internal adhesives. (If you drop your phone in the toilet, it’s okay to wipe the outside with alcohol to disinfect it.)
DIY - How to Make Heat Blocking Curtains!

This one’s pretty much common sense but still a really good idea on how to make heat blocking curtains using insulated materials.
To save electricity with our super expensive A/C, I constructed reflective curtains to block sunlight from warming our house. Think auto windshield. This is super simple and kind of obvious, but it works well.
USB Solar Charger for all your Gadgets!

Here’s a cool USB solar charger for all your gadgets.
The solar mobile charger is the device of the transferring the sun light power into electrical power, it is working as: the solar panel transfer the sun energy into electrical energy which is stored in the built in 1500mAh Lithium battery, the stored power is then exported to mobile phone, digital, MP3, MP4 and other digital products, of which the process is done by the control circuit, and the different adaptable connector. The AC charge is designed for continual overcast days when there is no sunlight; with the AC charge function customer can charge Lithium battery with AC 100V-240V or USB port. The solar mobile charger is the ideal backup power supply for business trip, traveling, long distance journey, wildness working.
Top 10 Eco-Friendly and Green Gadgets!
Hi All,
I must have had my watch set to a day earlier, Earth Day was yesterday but I figured 1 day late is never too late for eco-friendly gadgets.
So here’s a round-up of various different eco-friendly and green gadgets you can buy to save the world:

Solar Alarm Clock - Great stuff, they should make all alarm clocks with a solar panel. How hard is that? Probably not that hard, look at all the caculators made today, they come with a solar panel. I think it’s just a simple matter of “thinking” by engineers. (Yes, engineers should really focus on making the environment better too, not just numbers…)

Solar Powered USB Bikini - This is great stuff, more celebrities like Pamela Anderson should promote solar-powered bikinis. (Think of how many hot girls would do the same…)

Recycled Bike Chain Clock - At $20, you can beat any other recycled bike chain clock out there, if there is any… Now, if you can make this thing solar powered by adding a small solar cell hacked off a calculator, it will complete the masterpiece.

Recycled Parts Collector’s Motorcycle - As a motor-head myself constantly trying to go fast on my 2007 GSX-R600, this one is a thing of beauty, simply priceless…

Satellite Solar Cooker - This one is classic, you could probably cook almost anything as long as you have sunlight.

Solar skateboard - Wow, I love finding new inventions that people invent through Google Patent Search, this one is my favorite.

Solar Cap - Make sure to get one of these for your next ball game for sheezy.

Solar Power Cells for your jacket - You can now convert your jacket into a “solar-powered” jacket simply by lugging this device and re-charge all your daily gadgets such as cellphone, iPod, etc…etc…

Solar Roof - That’s right, if you own a home, it’s time to get that Photovoltaic energy from your new Solar Roof. If you can afford it and you don’t have it, it’s time to serious think about getting one…

Solar Laptop Charger - Ha, this one is basically a gigantic collection of solar cells but hey, you can power your laptop using the sun’s energy. It’s a must if you are thinking about heading out to the desert and go camping. Make sure to bring a broadband card with you too so you can access the internet or use a blackberry as a broadband modem like me.
Yey, that completes our plethora of gadgets dedicated to the Earth day and making our Earth more green.

HACK - Window shade also acts as a solar powered Window Light!

Wow, check out this awesome window shade that also acts as a solar powered light!
This is a continuation of a project from Design for the 5 Senses that I worked on with Michael Jefferson and Jae In Lee. It’s a window shade that doubles as a light. One set of strings would be to control the level of sunlight by adjusting the height of the shade. The other set of strings controls the light level. I didn’t have time to add a solar component to it for that class, so I decided to work on this for Advanced Tech. There is some general “design” info here and a list of resources, but this page is mainly tech documentation of the solar component. Please see links on the left for more background & project info and images.
New Samsung Display visible in direct sunlight

Wow, check out the new samsung display that is visible in direct sunlight!
This means the 2.1-inch panel will look sharp regardless of whether you’re in a dark room or out in direct sunlight. Samsung calls the new technology Automatic Brightness Adjustment. The QVGA display will also use 20&ndash30 percent less power than other screens its size. It’s expected to hit production the second half of this year.
