Believe it or not, the guys over at About.com show you the “right way” to crack on egg by cracking it on a flat surface instead of edge of a bowl like how I do it.

It’s interesting to note that some people probably don’t know even how to do that yet.

Don’t worry, if worse comes to worse, use my method is to crack the whole egg and use the shell too like Nick Vujicic, I am sure shell has some great protein.

But in short, it’s best to crack an egg on a flat surface like a cutting board, not on the edge of a bowl. Why? Because cracking an egg on the edge of a bowl can drive any bacteria or other contaminants on the shell’s surface into the egg itself. Cracking an egg on a flat surface is less likely to do that.

VHS Hack – How to Make a VHS USB Flash Drive!

I am sure many of you are wondering why in the world you would make a VHS USB flash drive. That’s exactly the point.

By making one of these VHS USB flash drives, you can easily and inconspicuously hide all your important data as part of your old VHS collection that might be gathering dust anyways.

Alan from HackedGadgets has done it again, he’s made this cool retro-gadget and wants to share with you, every little detail and things you’d need to know to make one yourself, enjoy. Great stuff Alan, keep ‘em comin’ are u twittering yet?

This project turns a old VHS Tape into a USB storage drive. It looks like a normal VHS cassette tape except for the USB cable that sticks out of the shell. All of the project guts are hiding in the areas around the clear windows so that when you have a quick look at the front of the tape all seems normal. When plugged into a computer the VHS Tape Storage Drive will act as a normal USB drive except when the drive is accessed the tape reel will turn and the windows will light up. This will keep at least one of my VHS tapes out of the landfill.

DIY Beer R2D2 Serves Beer!

Looks like someone overly zealous about Star Wars have made a cool DIY Beer R2D2. Now, this one uses a Heineken can but I am sure you can use the bigger version, like a real keg, to make a functional Beer R2D2. Anyone up for the challenge?

What is Beer2-D3 made from?

Beer2’s technical specs:
Head – 1945 chrome BLC utility light shell.
Eye - vintage movie camera lens w/adjustable spring-loaded aluminum casing.
Body – 4.7 liter “adult soda” mini-keg.
Legs – propane tank valve handles, brass spacers, drilled-out washers, pair of aluminum Lady Josephine shoe butler (wall-mounted shoe shine holders).
Feet/base – 3 mini bread loaf pans, lamp hardware and a 1/2″ precision drilled aluminum base plate.
+assorted nuts, bolts, screws and, of course – lockwashers!

Ubuntu Hack – How to Make Ubuntu run Super Fast!

For those of us who are anti-Windows and anti-Mac, we will benefit from learning how to make Ubuntu run super fast.

Here’s some great tips on minimizing processes to make your Ubuntu run faster than ever:

1. Remove Network Manager if you do not need it “sudo apt-get remove network-manager”. If possible give yourself a static IP in /etc/network/interfaces like so:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.150
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.100
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.1.1

Having a static IP helps with boot time as your machine doesn’t have to communicate with the router/dhcp server as much to obtain an address.

2. Also remove firestarter or whatever graphical firewall frontend you’re using. Learn to control iptables at boot up and shutdown. It’ll be much snappier.

3. Install bum, “sudo apt-get install bum” and run it with root access. Shut off all unnecessary services. If you’re not sure about a service research it before shutting it off. Also, install sysv-rc-conf. Run the application as root. This will allow you to control, in an easy way, what services start at which run level. It’s like bum, but more detailed. Be very careful with which services you are removing from which run-level. If you don’t know what you’re doing here, research it or don’t touch it. After you do this you may want to reboot to make sure you didn’t break anything.

4. Turn off usplash in grub. (Mind you, you’re bootup won’t be as pretty as the splash will go away).

vim /boot/grub/menu.lst

on the kernel line delete the words “splash” and “quiet”

Reboot to see the changes.

5. If you have a dual core processor, you can decrease your boot time with concurrency.

sudo vim /etc/init.d/rc

and find the line CONCURRENCY=none and change it to: CONCURRENCY=shell

Reboot to see the changes. (tired of rebooting yet?)

6. Remove some TTYs

I could easily do this by editing /etc/inittab and then commenting the extra TTYs there. With the new upstart mechanism in place, things are a little different.

You have to edit /etc/default/console-setup file. This file defines how many ttys should you get.

Change ACTIVE_CONSOLES=”/dev/tty[1-6]” to the number of consoles you want. Lets say, 3 ttys, then change it to “/dev/tty[1-3]“.

And then goto /etc/event.d/ and change the ttyx files that you DONOT want. Edit them and comment lines starting with “start on runlevel”. So, in this case, you’ll comment the start line in tty4..tty6 files.

Rebooting shoud minimize the number of consoles for you. Worked for me!! Good luck, NOTE: Even though you’ve reduced the tty number, X is still on Alt-F7. Again, go ahead and reboot to make sure you didn’t break anything.

Moller Flying Car – The Autovolantor!

Moller has been building flying cars for decades now based in Davis, California, the same town that I went to college. I remember hearing about my friends who “saw” a flying car in the field at least couple times a month before I found out about it blogging.

Anyways, Moller has a new type of flying car called the Autovolantor which can “fly” over traffic occasionally but it’s not designed for full flights.

I like this new hybrid model as I found it useful to “fly” over a bad traffic area sorta like that Shell commercial back in the day.

Here’s a cool DIY headphone. I can feel ya because I listen to music all day long too. As soon as I am off the computer, I immediate switch onto my MP3 or iPod.

Since I listen to music/podcasts/audiobooks throughout the day while I’m working, I adapted a pair of normal safety earphones for speakers, and added a vintage look. I cut the outside portion of the cups off, replaced with a curved flat sheet of plastic -over which I mounted the grill (from an old record player) and the cork which I sanded to shape. Then I painted the rest of the shell green, and installed some $50 drivers. I still use them daily.

Here’s HOW TO fight/stop DoS(Denial of Service) Attacks using open source code (D)DoS-Deflate!

Recently, Zedomax.com has been receiving DoS(DenialOfService) attacks from various different sources.

We first thought it was too much traffic but it turns out it was some type of DoS attack. How did we find that out?

Well, after we installed a free open-source (D)DoS-Deflate, a free script that installs easily on your linux server.

This thing basically tracks which IPs are sending DoS pings and block them out automatically.

Well, after we thought it was just too much traffic and uninstall it, the hackers came back.

I am some of you hackers are reading this.

Maybe if you can crack this DoS script, you might be able to DoS us again.

P.S. When I used to work at Comfile Technology in Korea, I accidently developed this Lantronix X-Port that could be hooked up to ANY DHCP network and permanently bring down the network. Well…it just happened by accident. Maybe I can sell it as a internet security test tool for web servers…

Here’s simple instructions to (D)DoS-Deflate and prevent AND stop DoS attacks!
(You need shell access, most likely you will only have this on a dedicated server and I know Dreamhost and some hosts let you access shell)

“My server went from 44.0 Load to less than 1.0 Load instantly in about 5 minutes since installation.” I know a lot of you probably fighting the same thing and manually controlling the firewall but this thing makes that automatic.

Installation

# sh install.sh

Uninstalling

# wget http://www.inetbase.com/scripts/ddos/uninstall.ddos
# sh uninstall.ddos
