DIY - How to make an authentic Mouse using a Dead Mouse

Posted in Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Hack, Projects, Video by max on the April 30th, 2007 at 3:44 am

Dead Mouse

Here’s a cool DIY on how to make a mouse using a dead mouse.  It’s ironic because we found some mouse running around at my girfriend’s brother’s apartment the other day…  But that’s a cute mouse.  I don’t have the nerves to make one myself though.

Hacked travel-size (hardware) mouse + taxidermied (wetware) mouse = Mouse Mouse!
Fully functional, and furry!

Warning: this project involves taxidermy, dremels, and sometimes graphic pictures of dead animals. While there are no guts in this tutorial, viewer discretion is still advised. If you are offended by this entire idea, please peruse the wallet contest or the laser cutter contest instead.

DIY HACK - How to make a Solar Heater under 50 bucks!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Earth, Educational, Energy, Entertainment, Gadgets, Hack, Projects, Solar by max on the April 26th, 2007 at 11:44 pm

Solar Heater

Here’s a great DIY on how to make a solar heater. Although the one he made is not functional you can probably easily make it functional by adding an inlet pipe and outlet pipe plus a small PC fan. But the theory is very impressive and this thing could be made more efficient with a little bit more work.

Using the same equipment and methods, I determined the outlet temperature to be about 95 degrees - thus a 15 degree temperature differential. Not 110 degrees, but not bad , considering I didn’t even break $50 in materials - most of that being the plexiglas window.

Obviously don’t have the inlet and outlet attached to the garage - figures that the day I finish the furnace, it’s 80 degrees and sunny and it looks like we’re finally done with winter. Dad recommends wiring a pusher fan at the end of the inlet tube to keep the air circulating through the furnace.

Darth Vader Balloon

Cool, here’s Darth Vader Hot balloon for all you evil-spirited Star Wars lovers!

Lucasfilm gave its approval for Lambert to have the balloon built with his own funds, using one of the most recognizable characters in cinema, as long as the balloon was not used for commercial pursuits. “We contacted Cameron — the world’s largest manufacturer of hot air balloons — and a Darth Vader helmet replica was sent to their engineers to help them recreate every detail,” Lambert recalls. “A vector file representing the Vader helmet in 3-D was also sent to the engineers.
