I recently started using Google’s Picasa online photo services so I can store all of my photos online. Well, great news for Picasa users, your online Picasa photos are automatically included in Nexus One’s gallery view. How cool is that? I just found out. This is another feature that can’t be beat on non-Android smartphone.

For the last few days, I have been tinkering with basic functions of my Nexus One, really haven’t installed too many apps than couple, free Blackjack games but I have an honest, and fair review for you to look at.

Frankly, the Nexus One is a really “fast” phone couple with a 1Ghz processor, that’s probably the fastest I’ve seen so far. Compared to Motorola Droid’s 550Mhz processor, iPhone 3Gs & Palm Pre’s 600Mhz, the 1Ghz CPU on the Nexus One certainly makes a “vast” difference when it comes to having multiple apps open and also being able to multi-task.

The Nexus One probably is fastest phone you can get right now apart from everything else, that’s one feature I like.

Other than that, the supplied Android 2.1 operating system is great for using all your Google-integrated apps and more.

One feature I like is the “voice” feature that let’s you practically use your voice for virtually everything. I can write an e-mail using my voice, tweet using my voice, search on GoogleMaps on voice, search on Google on voice, and the list goes on forever. It’s not too shabby either, Nexus One will understand most standard English except hard words like “zedomax”.

Plus the search function in itself is great too since word suggestions are relevant and fast, just like Google is. This helps me save a lot of time. You could probably implement this on a Blackberry or even iPhone but if the phone’s processor is not up to par, you are likely to get a lot of lag nevermind using it. Nexus One does this great because of its snappy 1Ghz snapdragon processor. It’s basically the exact same CPU that iPhone 3Gs has, except 30-40% faster. (I am sure Apple will upgrade its processor soon but until then, king of speed is Nexus One.)

Now with that said, let me also talk about somethings that Google needs to improve upon:

GPS seems quirky at times inside buildings. It works flawlessly on the road but can take forever to get GPS signals inside my apartment, which btw is on 12th floor and gets perfect cellular signals. I will have a video on this compared to my Palm Pre so Googlers can go after it.
Touchscreen near the edges are too sensitive while overall touchscreen can be a bit more sensitive. I don’t know if my hands have gone used to the more sensitive Palm Pre’s touchscreen but I think it’s a software issue and it would be nice if the user can actually adjust sensitivity settings near the edges and the center of the phone.

These are volume buttons on the left side.

Micro USB is used for charging and connecting to your computer, just like a Pre or new Blackberry. Also note there’s 3 metal pongs for docking stations and one of the two microphones. Let me add that the two microphones are great for “voice” features since they cancel out noise.

Keyboard is pretty flawless, Nexus one will automatically correct your words even if you hit the wrong button. For example, I typed, “exanple” but Nexus One will turn it automatically into “example”.

Yey, my blog loads flawlessly on the Nexus One browser.

Of course, the back with 5 megapixel camera and the additional microphone.

The Google Android apps market is awesome, loaded with plenty of apps. The best part about it is that you can “search” for your app.

GoogleMaps is freakin’ awesome on this Nexus One phone. One thing I am having trouble is actually getting GPS signals when I don’t need to use it, inside my apartment. Oh well, that’s not a biggie. But I like the fact that I can store location on my GoogleMaps to my Google GMail contacts, meaning I can virtually save every location of my friends houses.

Once GPS starts working, navigation is pretty fun. I’ve always used just GoogleMaps and it has worked fine for me but the navigation will definitely help even more when I am lost or traveling.

Yes, Google StreetView I like, works well what can I say?

The voice feature is probably the highlight of the Nexus One phone since I like to use my phone constantly while driving. This helps me pay more attention to the road instead of trying to type while I drive. This one feature could possibly be my lifesaver. I know there’s similar apps like this on other smartphones such as Blackberry but none completely integrated into the phone like Nexus One. I can even write an e-mail while I drive, how cool is that? (without endangering other drivers on the road that is)

The voice feature works rather fast, you will see above screen after saying something for just 1 or 2 seconds and bam! Nexus One understands what you actually say.

Camera is pretty nice too, works flawlessly. Above is in camcorder mode btw.

Man, there’s so many free apps for the Android, I downloaded a “bunch” of Blackjack game apps and honed my skillz.

Photo DIY – How to Recover(Undelete) Photos on your SD Card! [MAC FREEWARE DOWNLOAD]

Exif Untrasher is a free Mac program you can use to recover deleted photos from your digital camera’s SD card (or any other memory card).

Did you know that when you delete files from your hard disk or any other storage device the files actually don’t get deleted but “marked” deleted? Files stay physically on your storage drive until you write over it or use special programs such as SecureErase to actually remove it from the physical partitions of your storage drives.

Anyways, Exif Untrasher is a program that simply looks through those physical partitions and recovers any Jpeg files for you. There’s a ton of other programs for doing this but this one is special for those Mac users who don’t want to pay to get their photos recovered.

Have you ever formatted your camera’s memory card accidentally or deleted images erroneously? Well, a lot of people have, including myself.
When I had that problem a few years ago, I found out how to restore the images using a hex editor, but (of course) it turned out to be pretty cumbersome. This was the moment when the idea for “Exif Untrasher” was born.

Photo Hack – How to Take Photos into the Sun!

Here’s a rather interesting way to take photos in the sun by taking the sun out using your fingers then cropping it out in Photoshop. Afterward, you can add a “fake” sun to make the photo look great. Of course, if you are using a DSLR such as Canon 7D, you can get a lens hood and a UV filter to do the hand job listed here, plus you might not need to photoshop it with fake fun afterall.

Taking photographs directly into the sun can create dramatic effects, but typically causes lens flare and tends to disrupt the color-balance circuitry in a digital camera (above left). How can we keep the highlights on the rocks and the backlighting of the cactus spines, while eliminating solar effects and restoring the blue sky? The technique described here won’t salvage any pictures that you’ve taken already, but it will help you to avoid the problem in the future.

My BestBuy Black Friday Experience with HD Video and Photos!

Well, last year was actually the first year I dove into the “Black Friday” world. Of course, I’ve never actually went shopping on a Black Friday in my 20+ years of living in America but this year, I decided to check out my local San Francisco BestBuy Black Friday sale to find out what the fuss was all about.

Initially, I expected mad crowds and people fighting over for gadgets. Well, let me share you the story in clear HD video and photos I took with my new Canon EOS 7D camera. (Please don’t mind my mad video/photography skillz! *sarcastic*)

This is my first shot on the back side of BestBuy Store where the line ended. (3:05AM)

I parked my car and blogged my last blog post. I was actually going to stand in line but it started raining lightly so I camped out in my car. When it hit about 4AM, the rain stopped and I started taking some shots. Here’s the BestBuy Black Friday VIP limo. One lucky customer wins a contest to win a VIP spot. He/she is allowed to bring 3 guest with him/her and also enter the store at 4:30AM instead of 5AM. Plus VIP gets a free $1000 gift certificate, meaning he/she shops practically FREE. This guy spent like $1003, so he spent only $3 plus he got a nice ride home. (If I were him, I would have gotten totally wasted in the limo with my friends. Well, maybe he did.)

There’s the VIP guy, he seems pretty happy. I should get a VIP too for writing this blog post!

This is about 4:25AM, just before BestBuy VIP gets in the store. Everyone else is still chillin’, not too bad though. Also note ABC News van is here, this must be a pretty big event if they are here.

Yey, more people waiting in line around the corner. Everyone seems to be pretty positive and anticipating to get in soon, I can feel it, my hands are shaking because I am the only non-news guy there taking photos. Plus, this is my first ever Black Friday, I feel nervous also because I didn’t sleep. I am sure that’s how everyone else is feeling tonight, very excited to get some great deals.

I took a shot of the ABC News van while it was open, they have pretty neat stuff in there like bunch of remote controls, I wonder what they are for.

More VIP and his friends. I feel like BestBuy is making this Black Friday into like a nightclub entrance, perhaps similar strategy of building “anticipation” with long lines.

I went around the block at about 4:40AM after the VIP guys went in, the length of the line is the same but for some reason, it’s about 3-5 times more packed than I saw at around 3:05AM. (You can see this in the video too.)

I took photos of these VIP signs right before they took them away.

Me, anxious to see a big, MAD crowd when the doors open for rest of the people at 5AM. This is about 4:50AM, I am getting really excited for no apparent reason.

After they started letting people in, a lot of the latecomers stand around the entrance thinking the line will eventually dissolve. They realize they have to wait in line too though. (in a bit)

I am new to DSLR photography and have heard somewhere that you can take great photos after rain, I have to agree. (although this isn’t exactly a masterpiece in anyway…)

After the long line dies out a bit, I take a stroll around the block and see a LOT of garbage. Well, I don’t think that’s unavoidable. But BestBuy employees were giving out free energy drinks the whole night, THAT is cool.

Okay, finally after about 30 minutes, the line dies out so I am in line too, almost there!

After I get in, I try to find some open space. I thought there would be more people at the Apple booth but nobody is interested in the Macs, everyone is at the PC laptop section.

Actually, there’s just like 90% of people crowded near the laptop section and this is where the madness is inside the store.

I took some shots of cheap deals like this Sony Bravo HDTV for $377.99.

More great deals on Samsung HDTVs. Most of the good stuff(deals) were actually sitting in the walkways.

More great deals on LCD HDTVs…

These Sony Bravo 40-inch HDTVs were hot, a lot of people had a whole family to protect their share, blocking the whole walkaway. I guess $540 for 40-inch is not bad, perhaps one of the best deals for HDTVs there.

This is actually my favorite aisle, I love checking out new laptops at BestBuy more than anything else.

Great deal on Dell Intel SU7300 Dual Core w/ 8 hour battery?

This is another great deal Dell T4300 for $549.99. I think the only thing missing is HDMI on this laptop, too bad.

Great deal on multi-printer from Epson for $24.95!

Another great deal on 13.3″ Toshiba laptop with SU4100 processor.

BestBuy had some real bargains on games for Black Friday, this was one of them.

Nikon CoolPix P90 for $299.99, pretty tempting indeed.

Here’s great deal on Wii with extra nunchuck and Wii Play. I think I paid about 3 times more for mine almost a year back, regretting deeply…

I think this is the ABC 7 News cameraman, well I had to take a photo of his $30,000 camcorder.

Overall, I have a really good time taking a bunch of photos and videos at BestBuy. NO ONE told me I couldn’t take photos or videos. Next year, I might make some better videos/photos though.

I ended up getting NOTHING at BestBuy because stuff I was looking for were actually cheaper online. I think the best deals are probably the HDTVs and laptops but I don’t need another HDTV for at least a year.

Overall, I am satisfied with my first ever Black Friday shopping experience starting at 3:05AM in the morning. Time went pretty fast because I was either blogging in my car or taking photos/videos of people.

I also met a nice guy who was buying an iPhone for his daughter, thanks James for being a cool dude! (He’s in the video btw.)

I couldn’t interview the #1 guy in line because he didn’t want to but I did interview the #6 guy in line, I guess he came 6AM the day before!

Also, I realized that shopping Black Friday in San Francisco ain’t that bad as most people are used to competitive shoppers and traffic. I think more problems are in suburban cities/areas where there’s not enough taxes to have more police officers or people are simply not used to massive collision of people.

Anyways, the Black Friday experience at BestBuy proved to me that Black Friday isn’t all that it’s hyped up to be. Of course, depending on where you live, this might be different but I think people are becoming more aware not to be simply stupid and be mean to others.

I didn’t buy anything but heck, I did get the photos/videos I wanted to write this very blog post.

I’ve been snooping around for some DIYs on YouTube and found this great Photography DIY on how to edit photos in Photoshop. I find out that it’s actually channel of Lilian, one of our bloggers on BagWhiz and Mattresszine.

Anyways, Lilian has some really great photography/Photoshop skills I didn’t know about, watch this video on how quickly/efficiently she processes/edits a photo.

I have been actually starting to study photography so this will help me a lot, definitely.

Photography DIY – How to Make a Fish Eye Lense for Nikon DSLR!

Wow, here’s a really innovative way to convert your Nikon DSLR into a fish-eye camera that can take some really awesome lookin’ photos.

I got the inspiration to do this Instructable while reading another Instructable that accomplished the same “fish-eye” effect using a PVC reduction pipe and an entry door viewer.

There was concern in the prior Instructable about around scratching the lens so I wanted to solve that problem in my easy to build fish eye lens as well as make a version which is easy to use, remove, etc.

I decided to modify the design by using an existing camera attachment which would easily mount to the camera and comes with most Nikon lenses.

For those of you Flickr-obssesed pro users, you will definitely need to look into how to backup your Flickr photos using FlickrEdit, a free Java-based program you can use to backup your Flickr photos.

Here’s a really cool concept for a mirror, an interactive multi-touch mirror that lets you draw things, check photos, well, it’s basically a computer in the mirror.

The only downfall about this product I see is that people would rather sit than stand while using a multi-touch system but a great concept.

The cognitive machine that is your brain automatically deals with things like size and distance and perspective, a job it hopefully does fairly well, you don’t have to give a mirror’s reflection much thought. However, interacting with buttons and animation layered on your reflection and the world behind you is unlike any other touchscreen experience. This unexpectedness, to me, is precisely the allure of HCI and all things touch-capable.

When I think of BMW bikes, honestly they look like old man’s bike, but BMW has introduced a new sportsbike S 1000 RR, that reminds me more of a Yamaha or Suzuki.

Well, if this thing goes to market, I may change my mind on Beemer bikes, seriously consider getting one now.

BMW took the wraps off its upcoming S 1000 RR World Superbike contender as the Motorrad division showed the new bike in its official race colors at the Intermot show in Cologne, Germany. Taking a good look at the photos, we can see that the bike is indeed very compact. Look through the numerous cutouts and vents in the fairing and you’ll see how neat and tidy the new literbike is.

Here’s a short little camera hack for those of you having trouble with re-charging the flash by adding an external battery. It might be a hack but it will work if you are shooting photos in long sessions.

If you’ve been shooting with a flash for a while, I’m sure you had some battery problem or another at least once. Like when one of four batteries goes bad and quickly discharges the other three. Or when it’s cold and the batteries don’t hold their charge so well anymore. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have a more reliable source of power? One that virtually lasts for ever (well, not forever, but for a darn long time).

Here’s a cool apple hack on how to replace the cells in your Apple Powerbook G3 if your batteries keep running out of time.

I decided to get new replacement cells from Battery Space instead of surplus cells at a slightly better price elsewhere. There are nine 18650 Li Ion cells in each battery, so I ordered 18 of them at a cost of about $100 with solder tabs. When they arrived, I carefully followed the instructions here to disassemble the first battery. It looked identical to the one in the photos there as you can see below.

Google has just announced their new Google Media Server, which supposedly bridges the gap between Google and your TV or any UPnP devices such as PS3.

It looks like a great way to organize your media files in your PC, especially if you are displaying them to your TV or simply want to access them from your PS3, XBOX, whatever.

Google Media Server is a Windows application that aims to bridge the gap between Google and your TV. It uses Google Desktop technology such as Desktop gadgets for the administration tool and Google Desktop Search to locate media files. All you need is a PC running Google Desktop and a UPnP-enabled device (e.g. a PlayStation 3). At the touch of a button, you can then:

* Access videos, music, and photos stored on your PC
* View Picasa Web Albums
* Play your favorite YouTube videos

Here’s an interesting photography hacking tool. Basically the image fulgurator inserts messages onto other people’s photos by displaying the letters at the exact moment the innocent photographer’s flash goes off.

Kind cool for sending messages in a tourist attaction.

It’s a reactive flash image-projector… or, to put it another way, a real-world hack of other people’s photos. Sounds sinister, looks sinister… works great. Adapted from a flash gun and an old SLR, it senses the flash of someone’s camera, and then quickly illuminates itself, projecting images or text onto the object that was being snapped. The video of bemused tourists in Berlin, peering in confusion at the screen of their digicams is priceless.

The iPhone Gets Its Own Photo Sharing Site

Natuba is a photo sharing site for iPhone users. Looks like this targetted marketing could work but of course, there are many other online services that let you do the same thing Natuba does already. Too bad they didnt’ take care of tagging, a must in a new Web2.0 service. Regardless, you can tell us how well it works with your iPhone.

iPhone users with Natuba accounts can add their snapshots to the site by emailing them to a special address. Descriptions can be included in the subject line and all photos are injected into a public activity stream. They are also included on one’s profile page and are candidates for the “Surprise Me!” page that randomly displays one photo at a time from the site.

The idea and execution are simple, perhaps a bit too simple. There’s no tagging, not to mention no geotagging (which would be a natural feature for such a service, if only iPhones had GPS already). I’d like to see the site add rating capabilities so the community can surface the best snapshots. After all, highlighting the coolest little encounters from daily life should be the site’s main thrust; no one wants to sift through the mundane.
