DIY - HOWTO Make a Serial port IR Receiver!

Posted in A+Featured DIYs, Circuits, Computer, Consumer, Cool, Design, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, HOWTO, Hack, Projects by max on the September 12th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Here’s a cool DIY on how to make your own serial port IR receiver.

What does it do you ask?

Well, IR receiver can be used for controlling any IR devices or reading from them such as TVs, DVDs, etc…etc…

The best part about this DIY is that it can be used for making your custom DIY media center.

This circuitry allows you to control your computer with a simple remote, like the one you already use for your TV-set. It’s very useful when you want to control a DVD or an mp3 player without having to stay at the keyboard. Please note that this circuit is NOT IrDA compatible and it won’t help you to connect to your mobile phone or whatever IrDA device; it’s only good to control your pc with a standard remote control. I use it for VDR and now my pc is a full featured set top box connected to the television, capable to digitally record and replay satellite television, DVDs and every kind of digital content (mp3, divx). There are many softwares you can install to control this ciruit; for Linux you can use Lirc and for Windows you can use either Winlirc, Girder, IR Assistant or uIRC.

Samsung Eco-Friendly Cellphone made from Corn!

Samsung Eco-Friendly Cellphone made from Corn!

With everyone in the industry and consumers going green, Samsung has no choice but to follow in people’s footsteps by introducing an Eco-Friendly cellphone made from corn.

Now, I kinda like this concept of making phones from edibles.  Will they make some new phones out of milk too?  Even better, maybe they can use barley, the same stuff used for making my favorite beverage.

The E200 features a 1.3 megapixel camera, video messaging capabilities and an MP3 player.

Although the device will be available in Europe next month, it doesn’t yet have a release date in the United States.

Wall Shelf with built-in MP3 Player!

Wow, this is a really great idea for a wall shelf/MP3 player.  Designed by NoDesign.

You have to see this cool technology that is called Wazz AL and is designed by NoDesign. In a few words Wazz AL is a bookshelf which can play the music, and with very cool control panel, you can see more by watching the video from this post. Waaz AL is a shelf connected to a computer that doubles as a device for audio diffusion and archiving digital music files (MP3).

DIY Ford Bronco PC - I bet OJ Simpson wanted one

Ford Bronco PC - I bet OJ Simpson wanted one

Ford Bronco PC - I bet OJ Simpson wanted one2

You know I ran into this post today, it’s a Ford Bronco PC. Well, the first thing it reminded me was OJ Simpson. Weird what the media could do to your mind. I try to stay off TV and any real news these days for that reason. Maybe one day I will buy my own island and live there with a dog and a cool boat.

Anyways, check out the Ford Bronco PC, all custom built from scratch, lovin’ the pics.

I started with the idea of an mp3 player for my garage because all my CD’s were getting scratched and dirty. At the time (Jan. 2004) I was planning an upgrade to my gaming computer and figured I would have extra parts left over. So I tried thinking of something that would ”fit in” in a garage setting. Since I had recently finished working on my ‘69 Ford Bronco, I decided that would make a cool looking computer case and began taking measurements of the Bronco and major computer parts to find a scale that would work well. I found that 1/5th scale worked great. I also wanted it to be self contained and compact as possible and still use desktop components.

Cool XMMS hack for linux or ubuntu users using the wii remote!
The funny thing is he doesn’t even own a Wii console, just the Wii remote!
Well, we’d probably give it some good hacks if we just had some Wii remotes too.
Two thumbs up for doing XMMS on Ubuntu!

But I don’t own a Wii console. So I hacked away in linux and got it to control my xmms mp3 player. All buttons except power button work as follows:
