Ok so I, after much research, have been able to read the gyro data of the new wii motion plus peripheral with the arduino microcontroller. With this code and the code previously developed for the wii nunchuck (here), we are able to create a 6 DOF IMU for under $40. Thanks Nintendo! Best of all, everything is I2C so only 2 analog inputs (A4 and A5 needed for the wire library) are needed to read 6 sensors and no ADC conversion happens on the arduino board.

Do you remember when the first Nintendo PowerGlove came out? It was like the tightest game controller ever.

Well, nowdays “nobody” uses a PowerGlove but here’s a guy who hacked it, added an accelerometer, and now functional just like a Wiimote, or maybe even better.

Over the past month, I’ve done just that. I stripped the guts out of an original Power Glove, replaced the ultrasonic sensors with an accelerometer, the proprietary microcontroller with an open-source Arduino, and the wired connection with Bluetooth. I wrote an input manager to get the data into Unity, and hooked it up to the boxing game Adam and I are making for iPhone, Touch KO. What’s more, I’ve documented the whole process so that you can make you own!

As a resident of San Francisco, I can say how much I hate tow trucks since they towed my car without warning. It just happens that tow trucks “wait” around parking lots to tow cars.

Okay, that said, here’s a cool DIY air suspension system made for tow trucks, I hope it doesn’t make it to the market, I really don’t like technology improvements for tow trucks. I think people in tow trucks are one of the “lowest” grade jobs out there along with parking meter people. Don’t get me wrong, tow trucks are just really “bad” in San Francisco.  If they start doing things more “legally”, I’d have to change my mind though, but that’s not going to happen in this bad economy-era.

Gadget Freak James Kinney was looking for a way to take the pressure off the back end of a tow truck when it’s carrying a heavy load. If you can equalize the pressure of the truck bed so all the weight is not on the back end, there will be less stress to the truck’s suspension system. Kinney developed the air suspension system, called the Mechatronic Microcontroller, in his mechatronics’ class at Colorado State University. The gadget uses a resistive touchscreen from an electronic Sudoku game to select the ride height of the tow truck’s bed to make it level, thus spreading the stress of the towing weight evenly across the truck’s suspension.

Remember the Automatic Ball Throwing Machine for your dog?  Well, get one of these Robotic Dogs and you will have a complete dog throwing/fetching automation.  Why not?

This robot uses an Acroname CMUcam2+ for its eye and an Acroname BrainStem GP 2.0 microcontroller for its brain. It chases down a bright pink ball (which I made with a styrofoam ball and neon pink acrylic paint), grabs it with its dual-servo pincher, and brinks it back to its home base by homing in on another bright pink target (conveniently mounted over the iSight camera on my Mac).

The duck, Charlie travels to many tourists spots in New York City. The duck takes a picture when it detects flash light from other camera, prints it out or posts them on the Net via WIFI.

here are the gates i put in when we had are first child so she would not run out on the road i had this idea i would put motors on them this was not as easy as i thought
i started with a 12v window motor
with a rightangle drive but you can not drive the motor backwards so i could open the gates with out power you need to put a clutch in line

Remember I did a G-Force Meter couple years ago? Here’s another cool DIY G-Force meter. The only difference it that it uses 7-segment display and a PIC18F series microcontroller.

After seeing so many applications using acceleromters making a simple project of my own with this cool sensor just seemed natural.
The main application of the accelerometer is either for sensing tilt or sensing acceleration. For this application A G-Force meter for my car will be made to see how many “G’s” I pull while driving.

Check out the Atmel AVR temperature controller hack, although I made a better one last year that can be controlled via ethernet, the case looks awesome!

Wine doesn’t like subzero temperatures, and during wintertime, my “winecellar” got pretty cold.
There was an electric heating element, but the thermostat was broken, so it was either full burn or nothing.

That’s how the temperature monitor/controller came to be.
It was an obvious task for a small processor and I’ve always wanted to test the Dallas temperature sensors.

So, I designed this little device which could monitor the temperature and control the heater.

Bit-Banging Sound
To bit-bang sound we toggle an output pin at the desired frequency. To play a musical note, we need to use specific frequencies and play the sound for a specific amount of time.

Generating the desired frequency big-bang style means figuring out what the period or cycle time of the desired frequency is. This is easy to calculate, it’s the reciprocal (1/F) of the frequency. As we found in part 2, 1KHz is 1000 cycles per second. So, one cycle takes 1 one-thousandth (1/1000) of a second or 0.001 seconds (1 millisecond). We need to toggle the pin at this rate so we want to keep it low for 1/2 the time then high for 1/2 the time. Therefore we want to set the I/O pin low for 500uS, then high for 500uS and do this over and over for as long as the duration requires.

This is kinda cool way to control an LCD hooked up to Ardunino with browsers including your mobile phone.

In conclusion, this code may be pretty ragged, but the concept is what is important and it should be enough to get you started. You obviously can’t do anything too intense with this. It could be used to do some simple but cool things though such as controlling your house from your cell phone, or feeding your dog or cat over the internet, etc. Once again, please e-mail me if you need help getting it working for your project.

I ported the Atmel AVR910 In System Programmer protocol to the Arduino. Now I can write programs to my ATtiny2313 and tiny13 chips. The Arduino sketch is available for download here. It works with the AVRDude programming software. This article will show how to use the Arduino to upload a program to the tiny13. The first step is to download the zip, extract the .pde file, then load it into the Arduino IDE, and write it to the Arduino. Next we can hook up the tiny13 chip.

The original AVR910 programmer didn’t support the tiny13 chip. I added tiny13 support to the Arduino version and assigned it part ID 1. I had to modify the avrdude.conf file also. I just added the following line

Cool nice little wiimote Robot…

This robot is composed of Legos and uses a handyboard as the control hardware. It has 4 wheel drive each controlled by a lego motor, and a pan tilt mount for directing light and the video camera. The Wii Remote talks to a MacBook Pro over bluetooth to modified DarwiinRemote software, and the computer in turn communicates with the robot over a serial port. This robot was designed for and used in a small scale demonstration of Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) as an assignment in Intro to Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. Designed, built, and programmed by Andrew Hundt, Boris Lipchin, and Ned Fox at CMU.

I belong to a diverse group of amateurs who have a fascination for brewing our own beer. In addition to the satisfaction of brewing the beer I drink, and the control I have over the process (and the ability to easily avoid crappy mega-swill beer from the big breweries), we homebrewers get to play with a bunch of cool gadgets. Even if you don’t have any interest in cooling beer, this information in this tutorial can be applied to other projects that involve analog sensors, and high-voltage/current devices.

Over the past few months, I’ve started kegging my own beer, at home. This is a pretty simple process, but one of the key ingredients to making consumable draught beer is temperature control. Obviously, beer doesn’t taste quite as good if it’s warm (or too cold, for that matter), but there’s more to it: carbon dioxide is much more soluble in water (or beer) at lower temperatures, so it’s essential that kegs be kept cold, when serving.

Most homebrewers take one of three approaches to cooling their beer: buying a pre-made kegerator, gutting a regular refrigerator to hold kegs with taps on the door, or altering a chest freezer to hold the kegs and mount taps. I chose to take the third approach (a friend was getting rid of a near-perfect sized chest freezer).

Generally, chest freezers have thermostats that work in the “freezer” range. That is, below 0ºC, or below water’s freezing point. Even at the “warmest” temperature, most freezers will still freeze beer. This is no good when it comes to kegerators. Many homebrewers solve this problem with a device referred to as a “Johnson,” “Love,” or “Ranco” controller (depending on the brand of controller). Basically, this device plugs between the AC mains and the chest freezer, and has a temperature probe that is placed in the freezer (the freezer’s internal thermostat is set at “maximum cold”). The temperature probe, depending on the model chosen, will either be a solid/liquid mechanical probe (usually found on the cheaper controllers–this is likely the same type as is found on the freezer’s internal controller), or a thermistor.

One day, a few weeks ago, I had the urge to finally get my chest kegerator cooling my beer. Living in Canada has its benefits, but one of the recurring problems we Canadians face is the difficulty (and delay) in having items shipped from the US (where most of these controllers are made/sold). I wanted to get it working now, not in a week, or more, when a controller would arrive. Additionally, these controllers can run for anywhere from $60-200. I didn’t feel like waiting, and I didn’t feel like paying. So, what’s a resourceful geek supposed to do? Build your own, of course.

Looks like Shelto has been updating his internet robot project from couple months ago.

Check out this cool internet controlled security robots made with some CUBLOC PLCs and GPS modules.

We’ve lowered the overall profile and given Turtle (or should it be Tiger), a new paint job. We have also added a GPS unit. The GPS feeds signals to the CUBLOC micro controller which sends the location back to the controlling pc on the internet.

Ohhh….. here’s a really cool DIY HACK that can sense your squeeze. (This might be good for making an adult-related game…then again…)

I’m researching squeeze sensing as a mode of tactile interface. Here I will cover the process of developing a squeezeable sensor and the firmware/software concerns associated with interpreting the data from the sensor. This fulfills the “sensor project” for my class called Computational Principles in Media Arts taught in AME at ASU by Todd Ingalls and Hari Sundaram.

First off, how do we sense “squeeze?” People squeeze all kinds of things: lemons, steering wheels, loved ones, toothpaste and other toiletries, pimples, stress balls, hand exercisers. I would like to focus on the latter two, which provide a therapeutic activity for those with Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). Using flex sensors arranged in a certain pattern on a spherical object, in this case a rubber dog toy, one can capture whenever the ball is squeezed. Here’s a sketch of the sensor layout:

Wow, this has to be one of the coolest coffee tables you can own. You can get the kit at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories for about $350 or $450. You can even purchase a completed version if you are just not circuits-savvy.

Since we first showed these off, we have had a lot of inquiries about how you can make your own table like this. Today we are announcing the availability of some (very large) electronic soldering kits so that you indeed can make your own.

Our kits include the giant printed circuit boards, components, instructions, regulated power supply, and all other parts needed to build the electronic portion of the table tops. Constructed, you end up with what essentially amounts to a single extra-ginormous circuit board that can sit underneath the clear or frosted glass (or plastic) top of your own table.

After doing the reset mod to my Arduino Compatible Bare Bones Boards I wanted to update the firmware to get the full benefit of the Diecimila update. I followed the directions on the Arduino website but could not succeed. I sent emails and did web searches and still did not find the answer. Ultimately with the help of David Mellis, one of the Arduino Team members, we figured out that it can not be done from the IDE using the simple cable described at the Arduino web site. It can be done however and this article will give you the information needed to update or program new Mega168 chips with the latest Arduino code.

Wow, this is sweet… This could easily be implemented for medical robotic arms.

A master/slave system I built using potentiometers, servos, and an IFI robotics controler .

I took this robot apart a couple of years ago, but I am re-building it for a class at my university.

The shoulder rotation, elevation, and elbow joints are Expert Electronics SL820(shoulder elevation) or SL800(rotation and elbow) giant ball bearing servos. I don’t have the original gripper as it broke. it was just a regular servo with a piece of balsa wood attached to the side, and one attached to the servo horn. I used epoxy to attach the wood.

Here’s Midi Controller “LivePAd” by Craig Dorety who is a musician, inventor, and a very smart (mechanical) engineer! He built this as his college project. Custom-built from space-age plastics and psychedelic circuitry, this MIDI computer music controller for the 21st century allows the complete, dynamic control in a small guitar-like instrument.

It took 6 months of CAD design, some helpful design assistance and input from my friend Devin Becker and a lot of time nearly inside a nice Mori-Seiki CNC with some not-so-cheap, plastics. Many hours were spent with a soldering iron and experimenting with opamps. Now that I have started programming my own little micro controllers, I will be adding music and MIDI responsive lighting to the next incarnation of this invention.

Check out this cool electric skateboard these guys made. Thanks Frank for letting me get on it. I was about to take off with it to my house…
It’s an electric skateboard that goes forwards and backwards by simply putting your weight towards where you want to go. It seems to be using some kind of accelerometer. If they start selling these to kids, these would be way more cool than any Segways for sure.

Check out these Cool ALAVs (Autonomous Light Vessels) by Jed Berk! Tight! It uses Sun Microsystems SunSpot microcontroller, which can be programmed in Java. I like this idea since there’s a lot of Java embedded processors out there but this ones from the creators. Jed tells me that all the pieces were 3D designed on the computer and laser-cut, kinda cool~ :)

Jed says, Make Store will have these cool DIY ALAV kits soon!

Internet is kinda slow here at the Maker Faire. (That’s why our posts are slow too.) We even switched to a Sprint Broadband but with live video streaming, it’s still too slow but we will keep postin’~

Here’s a cool USB disk drive hack that shows you how to bypass the password retries with 1 wire and tips to getting started with cracking the actual password. This shows how vulnerable those USB disk drives are in the hands of smart hackers.

The package seems to be made of black velvet, and there’s a nice keychain hidden in a compartment of the package which you can use to hang the stick around your neck. I’m not so fond of metal on my body, considering I work with electricity a lot, but I can imagine it’s a nice way to carry really valuable data around.

First thing I did is plug the device into my Linux-machine. It showed nothing but a 2MB partition containing a Windows program called PASSWORD.EXE, so no chance of getting it to work easily in a non-Windows environment. So much for cross-platform compatibility… Ok, so let’s boot into Windows.

Under Windows the program was runnable OK. Hmm, seems someone already entered a password for me… and I now only had nine retries before the unit would self-destruct!

Check out this Automatic Color Sorting DIY that uses some DC and stepper motors from an old HP printer and uses Parallax’s new 32bit processor as the brain. Brilliant!

This could be great to low budget project requiring color sorting.

Once the Sensor was figured out I started to build everything. Most of the parts including the DC motor and stepper motor were taken from an old HP 712c Printer I had laying around. The carriage system for the ink head was my main platform for the sorting process to occur on. I then had to design a way to control the flow of m&m’s, this was accomplished with the idea of using a system that is commonly found in gumball machines and a coin sorting machine. I then made a CAD drawing for it to be milled by my father using a CNC machine.

DIY APPLE HACK - Apple Bus Mouse garage door opener mod! 2

Check out this cool Apple Bus Mouse that’s been modded into a garage door opener. Brilliant!

So I got bored tonight and started going though my box-o-cables and came across an old Apple bus mouse I had gutted years ago. I always wanted to turn it into a garage door opener but never got around to it. Well, coincidently the garage door opener for my apartment parking is the perfect size to sit inside the mouse with room for a switch.

After some probing around the opener PCB, I found two easily accessible leads for the main switch, and used wirewrap to trace them out of the unit. Wirewrap around the terminals seemed easier than soldering them. With a $1.15 tube of Krazy Glue, a nylon washer and a PCB stand off, I got the switch just below the button so when screwed together it had about the same throw as the original mouse. I also tapped a lead from the LED on the board and ground to wire up a new LED where the old mouse cable went.

I took some pics, so take a look and remember, you would be amazed at what you can do with “junk”.

Wow. This is awesome! (Not intended for people under the age of 18) Check out this cool remote controlled flamethrower robosapien!

Just remember that I did warn you! So now if you blow off a hand or burn your house down you can’t blame me! Now we can get down to business. I had seen the V1 flamethrower hack by Adam Plavinskiswhen I was first looking into getting a Robosapien late last year (picture to the right). I wanted to do something similar but it had to be controlled from the remote which was going to be the challenge.

I was at my local Dollar Store the other day and when I saw this Heart shaped Touch Light, I had to hack one for my gf.Here’s a quick hack on how to make a regular Touch Light and make it into a Glowing Heart Night Light.

Touch Light from local Dollar Store: $1

CB220 Proto Board: $5

CB220 Module: $34

12V Adaptor: $9

11 RED High Output LEDs : about $5

1) First you get the parts ready…

2) Unscrew the screws on the Tough Light and open it up.

3) Build the Proto-board and then build the circuit.

4) Get rid of the bulb.

5) You can use a 12V adaptor to power the thing or use 9V battery too.

6) Cut the end of the adaptor and slide it through the holes in the Heart Touch Light.

7) Connect the cut lines to the DC Jack of the protoboard

8) Connect the DC Adaptor ends as shown above.

9) Place the whole board on top.

10) Get a piece of plastic or make a little film piece using scotch tape.

This is sick! Check out the servo snakebot using an Atmel Atmega32 microcontroller and bunch of Futaba servos!  You can see more videos of the snakebot here.

The robot consists of nine cars connected with eight Futaba servos controlled by a microcontroller. All wheels are passive, the locomotion comes entirely from lateral undulation, which is wave movements in the plane similar to a snake.

This is a current project of mine, hacking a Roomba Red. After seeing all the roomba hacks on MAKE and Hack A Day I really wanted to build my own bluetooth controlled roomba. What really finally motivated me was seeing all the different projects on TodBots site. I have an Arduino and have been wanting to learn Processing, this is my chance to do all three! For my first project I figured that I could use the camera off of the Sonarbot and find a video to usb converter for my laptop. Quick and easy remotely operated robot on the cheap.

I was at work trying to draw some stuff and Garrett came over with his USB Hid Portal device and plugged it into my USB hub (which was annoying at first) then suddenly my mouse started making circles on its own! So we decided to call this the USB Mouse Prank Device… There’s really no howto on this but you can check out Garrett’s past USB projects such as:

M&M Line Trace Robot!2

Tight, check out this really cool M&M Line Trace Robot! It’s awesome! They should sell these at M&M stores. (I recently bought a M&M sculpture for my dad’s birthday but this is even better!)

For the holidays, my local grocery store sold m&m’s candy containers in the shape of a racecar. The containers are painted metal (probably steel), with a thin plastic coating on the inside. A dinky package of plain m&m’s came inside, not peanut, as the yellow-color driver suggests.

About this same time, the ChiBots robot club began discussing holding a robot line-following contest. Naturally, the colorful candy tin seemed like a perfect body to motorize and drive around the course.
