Amazon Netbook Review Roundup!

Posted in A+Featured Gadgets, Computer, Consumer, Cool, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, Laptop by max on the October 10th, 2008 at 9:50 am

Here’s a round of of best netbooks you can get from Amazon today from our Laptop Blog:

Eee PC 1000H is probably the top-of-the-line netbook to get right now as it offers a 10″ screen,160GB hard drive, Windows XP, and Atom 1.6Ghz processor.  I like the fact that Eee PCs have been leading the netbook industry and you won’t be disappointed carrying this 3.1 pound beast in your bag. The battery life is estimated at 7 hours but I think as long as you get about 4-5 hours on this, that’s good enough.

There’s other models of Eee PCs, but this one is the that will give you bang for you buck as it has the largest harddrive.

Eee PC 1000H - $479 at Amazon

MSI Wind 10″ netbook is probably the 2nd best choice right now as far as performance and speed goes.  This MSI netbook comes with 10″ screen, 80GB harddrive, 1.6 Ghz Atom processor, Windows XP, and weighs just 2.1 pounds.  I do like it but I’d rather get the Eee PC 1000H which comes with larger harddrive and longer battery life.

MSI Wind 10″ - $549.99 at Amazon

Acer Aspire One 8.9″ netbook is next with 160GB harddrive, Atom N270 processor, Windows XP, and 1GB memory.   I think 8.9″ is too small for any netbook but if you must get an 8.9″ screen, get this one as it comes loaded with features you won’t see on the other 8.9″ netbooks.  The 5.5 hour battery life should last you at least 3-4 hours.

Acer Aspire One 8.9″ Sapphire Blue $429.99 at Amazon

Acer Aspire One 8.9″ White $429.99 at Amazon

HP 2133 Mini-note is also a good alternative if you need a slightly bigger resolution than all the other 3 above netbooks.  The HP 2133 netbook comes with 120GB harddrive, 1.6Ghz VIA processor, and 2GB of memory.  The worst thing about this laptop is that it comes with Windows Vista, power-hogging operating system that’s not a good fit for mini-laptops.  I do like is the 8.9-inch screen with WXGA (1280 x 768) resolution, webcam, and 92% full-size keyboard, which beats all the other netbooks.

But yes, this would still be my last choice as it costs as much as your 15.4″ laptops.

HP 2133 Mini-note - $640.98 via Amazon

Well, there you have the best netbooks Latop Pimp thinks.  If you really must get a netbook, get the Eee PC1000H, it’s the best value and performance for your money.

Now, if you think all these netbooks don’t live up to your standards, get a regular laptop or better yet, wait about 6 months and you should see 5 times better netbooks.

Netbooks are still in the early stages and you need to consider the fact that they are “beta” products that manufacturers are still testing.  After 6-12months, we should expect more netbooks that are faster and better.

CX1 Supercomputer for $25K!

Posted in CPU, Computer, Consumer, Cool, Design, Educational, Gadgets, Operating System by max on the September 17th, 2008 at 12:14 pm

Microsoft and Cray launch the CX1 supercomputer for about $25K each.  The CX1 supercomputer can hold upto 16 Intel Xeon CPUs, 4 Terabytes of storage, and 64 gigs of memory.

The supercomputer will run Windows HPC Server 2008, the only downfall of it.

I would rather see free Linux system running on the servers, that would probably bring down the cost of software and price down to around $15K at least.

At this point I don’t really see the usefulness of this Windows supercomputer but I do like the hardware.

Faenov said that people in markets such as financial services, aerospace, automotive, academic and life sciences who must do simulations and modeling that require a certain level of computing performance have two options, neither of which is easy. “You can go to a corporate environment and try to obtain a large-scale system, or purchase a system and assemble it [yourself],” he said.

DIY 4 by 4 LED Matrix

Here’s a neat little DIY 4 by 4 matrix LED thingee

A few years ago, when I finally got around to learning PIC programming, I decided to I wanted to create something that would run LED animations on a small 4×4 matrix. I liked the idea of the small 4×4 size because I was starting with a PIC 16F628A. This chip can not directly control the 16 lines necessary for an 8×8 matrix (unless you get fancy). Also the 4×4 arrangement just seemed easier to work with in terms of coming up with different patterns. And the patterns would require less memory. One frame on a 4×4 matrix is 16bits or just 2 bytes, but on an 8×8 matrix, a frame would require 8 bytes.

DIY HACK - How to make your own White Board Plotter!

White Board Plotter!

Click Here to View in Full Screen Mode

Lol, this has got to be the best DIY project I have seen this year. A white board plotter! I need this as I used my white board a lot but do feel if I had such an automated plotter, I could be doing a lot better at jotting down my ideas more clearly than what is now, simply scrambled jotting.

Well, using the Internet to take a look at the whiteboard isn’t that difficult: just take a webcam and point it at the board. Writing it will be a bit more difficult: there’s something like a plotter needed for that. I’d like the solution to be lightweight: while a completely Borgified whiteboard has its charm too, I’d like to alter mine as little as possible. That’s why I decided to use an idea I saw first at the 24C3: a way of hanging a pen using 2 rubber belts and two motors called a bipod. Problem was that I had no info of that device (I found the youtube-link while writing this article) so I had to work from memory.

Flash dominoes

Posted in Consumer, Documents, Funny, Gadgets, USB by david on the January 17th, 2008 at 6:00 am

This is a new concept and somewhere that secret information could be kept, which is in a place that nobody would even think of looking in, well they will now of course.

dominoes usb

In order for you know how many gigs are of memory is on each piece there is a slight indication if you just look at the dots, it will give you a clue.
