You can submit your DIY ideas to Mr. Blank if it is too classified or you are too shy. Mr. Blank is an open-source guy personality, cool…
Also, check out his first matchstick rocket video!  (yes, up there dude…or  grrrr….)

Blank (me) is an open-source identity that web denizens can use if they want to show the world some great DIY, but are too shy (or if the DIY is of a necessarily anonymous nature :)

MisterHouse - Open Source Home Automation with web interface

Posted in Circuits, Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, Linux, Projects by max on the January 15th, 2007 at 6:03 pm

Check out this open source home automation software that you can mess around with. Garrett
found this site while trying to make some of his home automation DIYs. Cool! Thanks Garrett!

MisterHouse is an open source home automation program. It’s fun, it’s free, and it’s entirely geeky. Written in Perl, it fires events based on time, web, socket, voice, and serial data. It currently runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2k/XP and on most Unix based platforms, including Linux and Mac OSX.

Perl subroutines and objects are used to give a powerful programming interface. Here is some example code:

$fountain = new X10_Item 'B1';
set $fountain ON if time_now '6:00 PM';

$movement_sensor = new Serial_Item 'XA2', 'stair';
play(file => 'stairs_creek*.wav') if state_now $movement_sensor eq 'stair';

$v_bedroom_curtain = new Voice_Cmd '[open,close] the bedroom curtains';
curtain('bedroom', $state) if $state = said $v_bedroom_curtain;

Here is a list of the standard code files and a list of other user specific code files (index).

Here is some example speech output:

  • Turning furnace heat off after 20 minutes at 69.1 degrees
  • Notice, the sun is bright at 32 percent, and it is cold outside at 24 degrees, so I am opening the curtains at 8:07 AM
  • The van is traveling north at 58 mph 0.8 miles west of Walmart.
  • The car is parked at Friedell School.
  • Email account nick has 1 new email message from accountmanager.
  • Notice, Nick has been on the computer for 2.1 hours today.
  • The front door has been left open.
  • Phone call from Mal and Beth Winter from Montana.
  • Notice, there is 1 favorite show starting now: Dilbert on channel 8.
  • 8:58 PM. VCR recording will be started in 2 minutes for Southpark on channel 47.
  • Notice, there were 668 web hits from 74 clients in the last day.

PSP HACK - uClinux on your PSP!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, Games, Hack, Linux, Microcontroller, Projects by max on the January 15th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

http://zedomax.com/image/200701/uclinux_psp.jpg

Check out this cool PSP hack! Someone ported uClinux to a PSP! :p

uClinux is a open-source linux for small embedded applications.  You have no royalty to pay for
after you develop an application which is the benefit over the royalty attached RTOS
(Real Time Operating Systems).  Micrium has some cool RTOS but I think you have to pay like
$10,000 just to get started…

I ported uClinux 2.4.19 to the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) ™. Well, Xiptech ported uClinux 2.4.19 to the MIPS architecture, and I ported that to the PSP.

Depending on your perspective, maybe a lot, maybe nothing. It has minimal hardware support (the headphone jack serial port has a TTY driver, and, well, thats it really. Unless you count the CPU and the RAM.)

It boots. It mounts a root filesystem that is linked in with the kernel code. It loads an interactive shell and has a very minimal userland. At the moment, every binary is statically linked.

This is mainly a proof-of-concept. Hopefully now more people will help, and we can write device drivers for all the remaining hardware thats on this nifty little handheld.

HACK - Changing Your MAC Address In Window XP/Vista, Linux And Mac OS X

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Educational, Entertainment, Hack, Linux, Network, Ubuntu, Web by max on the January 13th, 2007 at 3:39 pm

Remember we found a MAC Address HACK for Windows the other day?

Well, here’s more ways for hacking your MAC Address that includes Windows XP, Vista, Linux, AND MAC OSX!
I think these are simpler than the ones before.

BSD

1) Bring down the interface: “ifconfig xl0 down”

2) Enter new MAC address: “ifconfig xl0 link 00:00:00:AA:AA:AA”

3) Bring up the interface: “ifconfig xl0 up”

Linux

1) Bring down the interface: “ifconfig eth0 down”

2) Enter new MAC address: “ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:00:00:AA:AA:AA”

3) Bring up the interface: “ifconfig eth0 up”

Windows 2000/XP
Method 1:

This is depending on the type of Network Interface Card (NIC) you have. If you have a card that doesn’t support Clone MAC address, then you have to go to second method.

a) Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click on Network and Dial-up Connections.

b) Right click on the NIC you want to change the MAC address and click on properties.

c) Under “General” tab, click on the “Configure” button

d) Click on “Advanced” tab

e) Under “Property section”, you should see an item called “Network Address” or “Locally Administered Address”, click on it.

f) On the right side, under “Value”, type in the New MAC address you want to assign to your NIC. Usually this value is entered without the “-” between the MAC address numbers.

g) Goto command prompt and type in “ipconfig /all” or “net config rdr” to verify the changes. If the changes are not materialized, then use the second method.

h) If successful, reboot your system.

Method 2:

This should work on all Windows 2000/XP systems

a) Go to Start -> Run, type “regedt32″ to start registry editor. Do not use “Regedit”.

b) Go to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}”. Double click on it to expand the tree. The subkeys are 4-digit numbers, which represent particular network adapters. You should see it starts with 0000, then 0001, 0002, 0003 and so on.

c) Find the interface you want by searching for the proper “DriverDesc” key.

d) Edit, or add, the string key “NetworkAddress” (has the data type “REG_SZ”) to contain the new MAC address.

e) Disable then re-enable the network interface that you changed (or reboot the system).

Method 3:

Use the program Etherchange from http://ntsecurity.nu/toolbox/etherchange/

Windows 9x

Use the same method as Windows 2000/XP except for the registry key location is “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Net” and you must reboot your system.
