IKEA has probably the cheapest, nicest furniture ever. Nevermind the fact that 2 coffee tables I have bought from IKEA in the last 2 years have all broke, there’s always room for little hacking such as this cool Kitchen Countertop Shelf that will create a lot of extra space for your kitchen gadgets such as bowls, pans, and whatnot.

I have seen IKEA go from nothing to a national retailer in America and I have to say IKEA is still cheap furniture (I will never buy a coffee table from IKEA ever again) but hacking makes them better.

This is my first IKEA hack. I bought a Grundtal 800 mm shelf to put on the wall but then thought I’d try and utilize space over my kitchen bench but putting two uprights and mounting shelves back to back. Next step was adding Grundtal countertop lighting which worked out really well I think ( perfect fit ).

Solar lighting is great for the outside, it gives off enough light and there is no wiring to worry about. Power cables and the garden do not really go, even if they have been properly installed there is always the worry that water or something will get in. This is not a problem when it comes to lights like this.

Green DIY – How to Green Your Apartment!

As people are becoming more conscious about our environment, we need to make sure each and everyone of us do their part. Even if “greening” is not scientifically correct, it’s a great way to conserve whatever we have left on earth.

My advice is to make sure to recycle and let no food get leftover.

Use An Eco friendly Laundry Detergent
Most people do laundry weekly, so try to be selective with the detergent that you’re using. Make sure it’s all natural and bio-degradable so that it won’t harm you your family or the environment.

Use Energy Efficient Appliances
You can start by using CFL light bulbs. They consume less electricity and still provide perfect lighting for your home. These have really gone down in price, and are found in most stores now. Get some for every room in your home.

Conserve Water
Clean water is important for human survival and it requires plenty of natural resources and electricity to process. So turn off the water when it’s not in use (i.e. use a large bin filled with water when doing dishes) and use rainwater for the dehydrating your plants.

Are you a photography-nut? Well, here’s a cool DIY photography C-Stand you can make using PVC pipes from Home Depot.

Here is my version of a simple and durable PVC backdrop or Lighting Stand. All the pieces are cheap and readily available and assembly is easy. I bought all the pieces at my local Lowe’s for about $11.00, so you can do 2 for about 20 bucks not counting the uprights. You might save even more if you buy a multi-pack of the PVC fittings.

Check out this cool robot made with iRobot and CMUCam.

“This is an iRobot Create fitted with a Robot Arm I pulled from an old Radio Controlled vehicle. It uses a Propeller Protoboard and motor controllers and accelerometers from Parallax to control the Arm and monitor it’s position using the two accelerometers mounted on the arm. The Create is controlled by another Propeller and uses a CMUCam1 for Color Tracking to track the object. A Sharp GPD120 IR ragne sensor is used at the Claw to determine when the object is close enough to grab. The robot is tracking the color, driving up to it until it senses the object within it’s grasp, stops, grabs the object, and raises it up. Simple example of great possibilities. And this isn’t even in ideal lighting.”

Here’s a great resource of what Apple uses to build their stores. I didn’t know they used so many stuff…it’s cool to know though just in case you want to build your own store like an Apple store.

If you want to re-model your home in the style of an Apple store, here are links to the suppliers of the actual items they use.

The designs of the Apple stores may not be particularly original in terms of architecture, however they break new boundaries in retail design with an attention to detail that is normally only found in major public buildings. The principal inspirations for Apple’s interiors range from Norman Foster’s Mediatheque in Nimes, with its central glass staircase and I.M. Pei’s entrance to the Louvre which is the inspiration for the fifth avenue store. Although the cube itself (particularly when it was shrouded in black) is more like the Kaab at Mecca, proving that Apple is a religion after all.

Many of the fittings they use, such as Erco lighting are used by people like Pei and Foster (where I used to work) and the exterior panels are made by the same firm that provided the panels for San Francisco’s greatest modern building – the De Young Museum.

Some wall coverings can literally drive you mad.

This light emitting wall covering gives a new style to lighting and design by creating a pattern of light across the wall, changing the look of the wall and the entire room in the process.

I doubt very much if this will be seen in the stores yet, but I can imagine there being some sort of similar product or add on becoming available at a price!
