Celio’s Redfly Mobile Dock is now available in Europe, soon to be available here in the U.S. (I think). This Redfly Mobile Dock basically allows you to use your smartphone sorta like your laptop, allowing you to connect an LCD monitor and keyboard.

While you might think this is redundant and why in the world would you even carry all that with you when you can just carry a laptop, there’s some good reasons.

Let me explain. As smartphones get more advanced in the next 2 to 5 years, having an HDMI 1080P output on smartphones in year 2015 is not too far away. Given that mobile CPU clock rates have been at least doubling every year, there’s a good chance we might not ever need to carry laptops in the future.

Also consider that most smartphones coming out in year 2015 will probably have on-board mini-projectors, good enough to show 1080P videos.

If you consider these things, Celio is really just getting ready for the future. Really, no one really needs any of these devices right now but everyone might be using them in year 2015.

Of course, with things like pico-projectors with input capability, perhaps this isn’t such a great business in the long run, see video of the Light Blue pico-projectors I took at CES 2010 this year:

For those of you with some artistic skills, you might want to consider adding these rather wonderful “enhancements” to your crocs, add keyboard pieces!

I’ve seen such recycled artwork many times before, one of my co-workers used to do this as a side job and people would actually buy these.

I think these types of DIYs are great, plus you can spell out your favorite words.

Crocs: The subject of much pointless quibbling.
I really don’t think it matters one way or the other — I wear them as slippers in the privacy of my own home, so I really couldn’t care less about how they look.

However, some love to adorn their plastic shoes with colorful charms.

Isn’t it about time to lend your Crocs a bit of class? A touch of geek cred? A shred of computer-based razzmatazz?

Netbook Hack – How to Add a Keyboard LED Light!

For those of you who have bought laptops/netbooks that don’t come with keyboard illumination, there’s a better way than simply attaching a reading LED light to your laptop/netbook (although that probably is the easiest way). You can actually hack your laptop/netbook to add an LED light near your webcam, all so you can control it with your keyboard for turning on/off. Of course, this is seriously a lot of work for adding a single LED light but it might be worth it if you compute in the dark a lot.

I’ve since modified my netbook and put in a ThinkLight equivalent; it’s a little LED in the display bezel that toggles on or off when you hold the Ctrl key for a few seconds. I also dimmed the power LED a little with some masking tape (I swear, sometimes it was brighter than the screen) and now the little netbook is so much more usable in the dark.

One more note, I think there’s an easier way to also illuminate your keyboards themselves by drilling couple holes onto your keyboard holder. Well, I won’t go there, I will let you imagine or try. Good luck.

Here’s an interesting iPhone hack if you are still using a Newton PDA device (I hope not!), to use iPhone as keyboard for Newton.

However, this could be very useful for adapting to other devices via iPhone’s serial port, there’s free schematics and code.

This app will allow you to use an iPhone or iPod Touch as a keyboard, to input text on a Newton running Newton OS 2.0 or later. You will also need an adapter to connect both devices together.

New Nokia N900 based on Linux!

Here’s some great news that the new Nokia N900 is based on Linux, similar to the new Palm Pre.

The new Nokia N900 comes with ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 1GB of application memory, 32GB of storage (expandable to 48GB with a MicroSD card), and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

That’s very similar to the Palm Pre, same processor but 4X more memory and 4X more storage. Plus, I have to say having a Mozilla browser is a definite plus. If it’s available anytime soon in the U.S., I will definitely be one of the first get this cool new phone.

FINALLY, Nokia gets on the bandwagon and implements Linux. This might be THE Nokia phone to get. I have to say though, I don’t like the keyboard coming out sideways, I rather have it vertically so I can type one-handed.

I don’t think this will ultimately compete with iPhone and Palm Pre but it’s a good start for Nokia, who has been forgotten for the last couple years.

Running the open-source Maemo 5 software, it can provide more of a PC-like experience on a small device, according to Nokia. The Maemo OS lets people juggle several applications at the same time.

“The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo, and we’ll continue to work with the community to push the software forward,” Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia’s executive vice president for markets, said in a statement. “What we have with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, the Internet and the mobile phone.”

Here’s a great way to add your own DIY NES arcade machine to your home, make one yourself!

Inside is an old PC and a 17″ LCD monitor. The back of the cabinet has two USB ports and two NES controller ports. You can connect regular, un-modded NES controllers and play with those or use the joystick and buttons on the control panel.

The front end is a simple VB program that auto loads when the PC boots. You never need to connect a mouse or keyboard to load your games. The VB program gives a list of games installed. Using the joystick, you can select the game you want to play.

This had to happen sooner or later, but here it is. What we have here is a standard looking keyboard but take a closer look and you will see that the letters have been replaced by images. Upon closer inspection, the images turn out to be logos.

This is a brand orientated keyboard with each letter being replaced by a brands logo, the brand has the same first letter as the letter on the keyboard that it has replaced. Naturally, it is going to take a bit of getting used to, but eventually it should work.

The title does not actually do this device justice, launched at the Computex 2009 in Taiwan this is a full wireless keyboard, but it is more than that. It is a remote control and a mouse too.

Being a USB device, no software is required. The Air Keyboard is a simple plug in play device that has a possible range of about fifty metres and uses two AA batteries that are supposed to last up to fifty hours. Works with both Mac and Windows, but unfortunately there are no details on prices etc.

What with Hello Kitty appearing all over the place, now we are going to have to contend with seeing these furry keyboards all of the place. It is typical of the Japanese to up with something like this and actually, it is pretty cool and is bound to be of interest to many computer users.

What they have done is completely covered the edges of the keyboard with this faux fur, this makes sure that there are no sharp edges, although us computer users are kind or messy and I cannot see this fur staying that clean for too long, with sweets and drinks etc. This would look great with the cat’s tail USB flash drive.

They are supposed to be better than using any other keyboard, despite the keys being all over the place and buttons in places where buttons should not be and we worry as to why these keyboards never caught on at all!

There keyboards that have been specifically designed to help gamers perform better and then there are those that are designed with the web designer in mind, but these have still not caught on at all.

Here’s a really cool DIY “jailbroke” iPhone keyboard someone mustered up using IR, I guess anything is possible when you start hackin’ it. Simply nicely done guys.

Expanding on their audio port modem , PerceptDev engineers Zack Gainsforth and George Dean developed a hardware and software solution that allows infrared keyboards to be used for typing on the iPhone, using less than $20 of electronics.

Here’s a great way to make a cheap keyboard storage (or you can store files too) using magazine holders. This will be a good way to save space as you can “drill” the magazine holders onto the side or any part of your desk/furniture. Heck, I might even add couple of these to my wall, that’d really give me more storage!

This Instructable is a step-by-step guide to turning a cheap Aluminum Mesh Magazine Holder (available at any office supplies place, Wally World, or Target) into an attractive and stable desk-mounted storage caddy. My purpose was to hold a Keyboard and mouse, but you could put anything in it really.

There isn’t hardly anything around these day that has not been steampunked in one way or another, so it’s not the actual steampunking that is a surprise it is the quality of the work and the idea behind it that make these so interesting.

This keyboard has old type writer keys, in fact that do like the keys used in the enigma machine. However, version looks as if it has been lying around for years; the wood has the old look to it where you could almost imagine your fingers pushing through it. If you like, that sort of thing is very well made, but maybe not too practical though.

What I like most about the new Kindle is that it’s revolutionary, (finally) sorta like when the new Apple MacBook Air came out. (it was so thin)

This is probably the most revolutionary e-book device ever as you have basically every book at Amazon.com in the palm of your hands and you can carry it anywhere with you while you don’t have to pay for 3G broadband connections. You can also read blogs, which means you can just get the device to read new blogs daily. (I believe it’s free)

I also like the new 16 shades of gray, seems like we are going back in time when I was “wowed” at the new 256 grayscale monitor in the 80s. But I know for a fact that due to the nature of this device (it has an LCD that does not have to be powered when idle), you cannot make Kindle color. (unless our battery technology gets better and better)

If Amazon.com was a revolution, this could be another one for them.

I am so excited, I will have to pre-order one, you can pre-order one too here on Amazon, shipped starting Feb. 24th.

BlackBerry Gemini 9300 Preview Review!

Wow, check out the new Blackberry Gemini 9300! It doesn’t look whole lot different from my 8830 but the inside may be much faster, let’s look at the pre-specs here:

The screen will be larger than the BlackBerry 8900, and that will also include a higher resolution

The CPU will also be beefed up. We’re not sure if this means it will include something more powerful than the Bold’s 624MHz processor or not, but we’d like to think so.

The device is said to be silver (think BlackBerry 8830)

The keyboard is a little more rounded than the BlackBerry 8900

The Send/End keys are rounded instead of being flat on the sides

Styling is not drastically different — it keeps with the 8900/Storm styling

It of course rocks quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA

Wi-Fi and GPS was not confirmed, but we’d say there’s about a 99.99% chance

Camera specs were not confirmed as well, but you can bet you’re looking at 3.2 megapixels or better

Hmmm, well, I just hope the size is smaller than the Bold or Storm, I find the they are too bulky over my 8830 so I am not switching until this 9300 comes out. (and hopefully smaller or same size as an 8830)

For any fan of steampunk equipment, this keyboard the Datamancer Aviator is something special that really looks as if it could belong in a different world, rather than here and now.

Of course, I think the keyboard has more of an enigma look to it; those keys certainly have a touch of the 1930’s and 1940’s to them. However, things like this provoke all different sorts of opinions, which is great. However one thing that is not great is the price $1,200.

G1 Hack – How to Update your G1 Phone Firmware Manually!

Although T-Mobile is working on a firmware update for the G1 phone, there’s a hack that lets you update to the latest firmware over at MobileCrunch. There’s a note that this hack isn’t really supported by T-Mobile so if you are going to do it, just make sure to follow directions carefully!

Here’s the directions:

1. Grab the RC29 update from Google here.

2. Rename it from signed-kila-ota-115247-prereq.TC4-RC19+RC28.zip to update.zip, and place it in the root of your Micro SD card.

2.5. If you added the file to your microSD card by connecting the handset to your computer via USB (rather than using a microSD card reader), make sure to unplug it now. (Thanks for the tip, Cole!)

3. Turn off your G1, then turn it back on by holding the Home+End keys until you see an icon popup after the T-Mobile G1 logo.

4. From the icon screen, open the keyboard and hit Alt+L. This will display the log saying what is happening (although you can skip this step).

5. Now press Alt+S to begin the update. Remember, the update needs to be in the root of the Micro SD card and needs to be named update.zip.

6. Once it finishes, just follow the onscreen instructions and press Home+Back to finish.

7. The G1 will reboot a few times to flash different parts of the firmware.

If all went well, you should now be running the latest update, RC29. To make sure all your hard work wasn’t for nothing, hit Menu > Settings > About Phone > scroll to Build Number. You should see RC29 in there somewhere. Congrats!

Here’s a funny story about a guy who uses his remote desktop software on his stolen laptop to catch the thief. While doing so, he had do endure lots of porn, which what the thief was watching mostly.

Of course, the laptop won’t ever be the same anymore, I’d at least dismantle that keyboard and painted over with clearcoat.

It was kind of frustrating because he was mostly using it to watch porn. I couldn’t get any information on him.
