XM’s New Portable Satellite Radio Device – codename Phoenix!

Well, as soon as this new portable satellite radio device is out, we’d probably no longer need to get a separate one for our cars, homes, etc…etc… We should be able to take it wherever we want to go, just like an iPod.

According to sources, the XM Phoenix is slightly smaller than the existing Inno with a much slicker interface and a rotating wheel that functions similar to the beloved SkyFi2. It features a MicroSD slot for external music (not for transfer of XM recordings, of course) and the internal storage space might have been increased (not sure exactly how much, if any).

The screen size is larger than the current Inno, but the antenna looks similar/identical to the Inno’s. Details on whether or not the device has WiFi are still fuzzy.

The Phoenix is supposed to hit the streets in Fall. As more details come in, such as the final name of the device, I’ll be sure to post them here.

- press up button twice on ur keyboard

- press down button twice

-press “b” now

- and now press “b”

-hit Enter

- hit right click of your mouse..

DIY iPhone Controlled R2D2!

Here’s the cool R2D2 robot of the day, one that can be controlled via an iPhone! I have to say this is becoming more realistic than all that other junk they sell online, awesome!

I found a way to remote control my R2D2 with an iPhone. I’ve got minimal control working now. Once I perfect it, I will share more details, but for now this will wet your appetite. In the videos I demonstrate controlling a servo and the dome motor using an iPhone using the accelerometer (tilting the iPhone controls it) and using a slider control on the touch screen. Other touch screen controls are possible too such as rotary controls, buttons, XY controls, and multitouch as well as gestures. I should be able to interface with my J.E.D.I display as well and type in text messages in the iPhone that will scroll across the front or rear logic displays.

Here’s a fun little project that shows you how to make an web-based robot that can be controlled remotely via the internet. THe main computer is used as web-control system while Make Controller is used to interface the computer to the servo motors attached.

Of course, I do feel that a real PC and the big screen is overkill, but kudos for making such a simple assembly using easy to find software like Skype.

Sparky uses Skype as the foundation for the video chat, as well as some custom software (and source code) we provide for basic wheel-driving servo controls. You can customize this code to add functionality to your robot – including more servos, gripper arms and sensors& You are limited only by your imagination and ingenuity.

Wow, this IS mind-numbing and also way too cool to watch…

Holy shit, now he’s showing a video of a guy using the arm using only his MIND. He learned this technique in two days, but Dean says it was more like the system learned how to interface with the human.

Looking at what he’s doing, the guy drinks and people applaud. It’s been two days. But the amazing thing is that he’s put the cup down so it’s become a lower brain stem function in two hours of doing cup functions.

Samsung has just announced their new FlashSSD drives.

With a read speed of 200MB/s and write speed of 160MB/s, The 256GB SSD is supposedly 2.4 times faster than you regular ol’ hard drive.

SEOUL, Korea (AVING) — Samsung Electronics announced today that it has developed its 2.5-inch, 256 GB multi-level cell(MLC) based SSD using a SATA II interface at the fifth annual Samsung Mobile Solution Forum held at the Westin Taipei Hotel.

With a sequential read speed of 200MB/s and sequential write speed of 160MB/s, Samsung’s MLC-based 2.5-inch 256GB SSD is about 2.4 times faster than a typical HDD. Furthermore, it is only 9.5millimeters (mm) thick, and measures 100.3×69.85 mm.

Samsung is expected to begin mass producing the 2.5-inch, 256GB SSD by year end, with customer samples available in September. A 1.8-inch version of the 256GB SSD is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2008.

My favorite programming editor is Vi since I do a lot of server programming.

Here’s a fun little Javascript web-version of the Vi editor.

Now you can try out Vi and all its shortcut/macro goodness online with jsvi, a JavaScript-written clone of the basic Vi interface. It’s obviously focused on code, carrying substitutions and spell checking for the most common languages, but it’s a fun place to try out coding for newcomers, or for programmers to do a little quick hacking when they’re away from their systems.

Anyways, here’s a video of T-online’s multi-touch interface at CeBIT 2008. There’s no other details other than people are playing with it and I am really jealous. (or joulous is it?)

Haha, this one is cool one to have.

The curtain control system is an existing system from Goelst and is called “G-Rail 6200″. Normally it is controlled by infrared or wallswitches. However, it can also be controlled with a CAN bus. I used this CAN bus to interface with an old PC.

I personally prefer Wordpress for making a website but you can use GooglePages to create some fun HTML-free webpages using their gadgets modules and click and drag interface. I stumbled upon this while checking out some of the users on Zedomax buddymap. Dr. Proctor had his home page on Googlepages, so I got curious and made my own Googlepage. Kinda cool thing if it gets bigger.

Server Status Board using Triklits

Here’s a cool server status board you can make using Triklits, which are color changing LED strings.

In September, I read a post on one of my favorite blogs about these Triklits programmable LED light strings and I instantly fell in love with them. I ordered two strands as well as the USB interface card and had a ball making these things come to life. After fiddling with them for a couple of weeks, I began to build this automated statusboard to help me monitor systems for me and my clients. The board updates every 60 seconds and displays information from several different sources including my Nagios installation, my source code repository, a bug tracking database, and a soon-to-be-implemented build server. I’m still working on the Perl scripts that I use to query the different sources, but when I’m done, I’ll post the source code here. This was a fun one to hack at last weekend!
