Food Hack - How to Make Refried Beans!

Posted in A+Featured Hacks, Consumer, Cooking, Cool, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Food, HOWTO, Hack by max on the October 15th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Well, my favorite Mexican food is authentic Super Burritos with spinach tortilla, refried beans, lots of jalapenos, and everything on it.  If you wanted to make some refried beans homemade style, here’s a cool DIY that shows you how to do that.

This would be also great way to feed your kids some “healthy” refried beans instead of the stuff that’s been sitting on grocery stands for weeks.

Refried Beans! The Man will sell it to you for generally $1.00 or more for maybe 12 oz of cooked beans, and the other 3 ounces some oils, salts, and other flavorings. I can get 1 lb of dried pinto beans for $0.49, and then after soaking and cooking, its really around 2 lbs of refried goodness. All bean, all pure, vegetarian, fat free, and no Hydrogenated fats in it.

GoogleDocs Hack - How to Bring Stock Feeds to GoogleDocs Spreadsheets!

Posted in A+Featured Hacks, Business, Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Documents, Educational, HOWTO, Hack, Stocks by max on the October 14th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

It’s been months since I dumped Microsoft Outlook for GoogleDocs and I have to say, it’s rather nice to have all your important data online, retrievable by any computer with internet access rather than having to carry or send/receive any data.

Getting back to the point of this story is the fact that you can actually feed GoogleDocs spreadsheets stock market data simply using a syntax of code shown here:

Retrieving Current Stock Information

=GoogleFinance("symbol", "attribute")

Pulling Historical Stock Data

=GoogleFinance("symbol", "attribute", "start_date", "end_date", "interval")

Yes, this is yet another example how Google is far superior to Microsoft, especially the fact that you can link up stuff from websites.

Ad Hack - Barack Obama Ads show up in an Xbox360 Game!

Posted in A+Featured Auto, Advertising, Auto, Business, Cars, Consumer, Cool, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, Games, News, Xbox 360, smart by max on the October 14th, 2008 at 11:57 am

It’s funny but I really think this Obama’s campaign managers are a LOT smarter than McCain’s people.  It’s probably due to the fact that Obama’s employees are “younger” (although I can’t prove it), or at least he must have hired smart Web 2.0 guys who play a lot of Xbox360.  Add to the fact that Obama’s website gets more web traffic than McCain here.

Anyways, it looks like Obama’s team did some good work with Xbox360 marketing months before the game came out. Check out VoteForChange.com.

Well, I will probably piss some of you off who are McCain voters or non-U.S. citizens but heck, isn’t it time for change?

Photo Hack - How to Batch-Crop Photos!

Posted in A+Featured Hacks, Consumer, Cool, Digital Cameras, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, HOWTO, Hack, photography by max on the October 10th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Here’s a cool free Windows program called JPEGCrops that will let you batch-crop your photos while maintaining the aspect ratio.  This sure beats editing each photo one by one with Photoshop.

JPEGCrops is a Windows program, created for preparation of a batch of images for printing. It provides lossless cropping with fixed aspects using jpegtran.

The program is freeware for private use and is localized to danish, english, finnish, german, polish, portuguese, galician and japanese. Partly localized to czech, dutch, french, hungarian and italian.

Online Shop Hack - How to Get 20% off pretty much Anything you buy Online!

Posted in A+Featured Hacks, Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, HOWTO, Hack by max on the October 7th, 2008 at 10:23 am

You can easily get 20% off pretty much anything you buy if it’s part of Microsoft’s buyback program.

Here’s how you do it.  Goto Live.com and search for anything you want to buy.  Sometimes, you will have to enter the competitors product to get the discount.  (As you can see above, you get 20% off for HP laptops by searching for Dell Laptops)

  1. I started my search at Live.com and searched for “cheap” along with some product name; I tried a few variations such as “cheap wii” and “cheap laptop” and both worked. (Nick pointed out in the comments that you should sign into Live before you search; I’d forgotten that I was signed into Live when I started. Thanks, Nick!)
  2. Looked for the link titled “Buy A Cheap Laptop. You may get XX% off with PayPal if eligible.” (This morning, it was 30%. As I type this, it’s 20%)
  3. Searched for the MSI Wind (Buy it Now items only), and purchased it using Paypal.
  4. Made sure that at every step of the way, I saw the icon for “Microsoft cashback” at the top of the screen.

Kid’s Hack - How to Make a Children’s Flintstone Car!

Posted in A+Featured DIYs, Auto, Cars, Consumer, Cool, Design, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, Gifts, HOWTO, Hack, Projects, kids by max on the October 6th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

I used to grow up watching Flintstones (while I didn’t know English back then) and although I didn’t understand a damn word, I did enjoy it thoroughly.

Here’s how to hack a toddler’s Flintstones Car for your young children.

I have a 20 month old grandaughter and a 14 month old grandson who are dressing up as Pebbles and Bambam for Halloween. I decided they needed a Flintstone Car to complete the look. This is how I made it…

Inspiron DIY Hack - How to Run OS-X on a Dell Mini Inspiron 9!

Looks like someone was able to install OS-X on a Dell Mini, nice…

The steps to Leopard-ize the mini are actually quite simple and easy to follow. After you download the slipstreamed ISO and burn the 3.2GB ISO to a DVD you boot up the Dell mini off a external DVD drive (Press 0 (Zero) at the BIOS screen) and installed Leopard as usual.
