Blue Screen of Death used as Fuzz Prop at NIN concert!

Posted in A+Featured Entertainment, Computer, Consumer, Cool, Entertainment, Funny, Operating System by max on the September 11th, 2008 at 11:00 am

I know, this is the famous blue screen of death that has been haunting Windows users for the last decade and now it’s being used as part of a background prop for NIN concert.

Yes, Windows is officially crap…watch the video to see the blue screen of death in action although it’s really hard to see. (Jump to 1:04)

DIY - How to Make a Box Kite!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Design, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, HOWTO, Projects, Toys, Wind, kids by max on the July 22nd, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Thinking of making your own box kite?  Here’s a cool set of photos you can refer to making your own box kites!

I’ve been making these [box kites] for few years, and tomorrow I’m getting a bunch of people to make them at gas works park in Seattle. So I figured I would spice up my usual instruction set and put it on flickr.

Samsung Launching a Dual Monitor with Webcam!

Posted in Computer, Consumer, Cool, Gadgets, LCD by max on the May 29th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Samsung Launching a Dual Monitor with Webcam!

Samsung will be launching their new dual monitor setup which includes a 22-inch monitor and a mini detachable 7-inch monitor you can attach on any side of the bigger monitor.

This seems like a really good idea and I think other LCD manufacturers will quickly start copying it.

It makes sense since sometimes you just need  about 7 inches of extra screen for IMs, video messaging, or a slideshow of your flickr while you work.

SEOUL, Korea (AVING) — <Visual News> Samsung Electronics announced the launch of its 22-inch all-in-one LCD monitor ‘SyncMaster 2263DX’ in Korea market, which features an additional 7-inch monitor connected to the display through USB.

Facilitating a multi-screen environment, the 2263DX monitor is ideal for users who require multiple screens to run programs and applications simultaneously. Leveraging Samsung’s proprietary UbiSync technology, the 2263DX delivers simple plug-and-play USB 2.0 connectivity, allowing for effortless dual screen configuration.

With a wide 170/160 viewing angle and a high 1680 x 1050 resolution on the 22-inch screen and a resolution of 800×480 on the tandem screen, the SyncMaster 2263DX supports Samsung’s MagicBrite3 technology, 8,000:1 contrast ratio, 5 ms response time, a built-in 3M high-resolution webcam, dual-array microphone and speakers.

Speaker Dolls!

Cute speaker dolls!

Flickr pool member Fungus Amungus made these chic speakers using Munny figures as enclosures. Not sure what level of hifi those little guys can deliver, but considering the cuteness factor - I might not even care much. - Munny speakers on Flickr

Wow, Maker Faire was a lot bigger this year over at San Mateo Fairgrounds near where I used to work.

Anyways, it was a lot of fun watching some cool gizmos, DIYs, and makers but it’s really crowded this year.

Flickr 3D Tiltviewer!

Posted in Computer, Consumer, Cool, Design, Graphics, photography by max on the January 21st, 2008 at 9:37 pm

Flickr 3D Tiltviewer!

Wow, these guys know how to make use of Flickr API. Here’s a 3D Tiltviewer that let’s you hop different Flickr pictures in 3D!

TiltViewer allows you to browse Flickr’s most interesting images in a 3D space. Images are pulled from Flickr’s Interestingness list.

TiltViewer was built using Away3D, a branch of Papervision. Currently Away3D provides better handling of mouse events for nested 3D Objects. One limitation of Away3D is that there is no access to a 3D object’s sprite, so you can’t apply filter or alpha effects. I’m guessing that soon these features will be added to both engines.

Does a 3D UI give more functionality than the equivalent 2D interface? No, but its certainly a lot cooler! Part of the motivation to build this was to explore ways to make 3D interfaces simple and intuitive.

Being able to load Flickr images into a 3D engine was recently made possible when Flickr added crossdomain XMLs to it’s image servers. Thanks Flickr!

DIY HACK - Sparkfun playing around with Touch Tetris

Posted in Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Funny, Gadgets, Games, Graphics, Hack, Projects, Video, magic by max on the August 30th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

I need one of these touch Tetris where you can actually move your whole arm to guide your boxes. (If I can only do this in the warehouse where everything fits, we’d save a lot of space…) (thinking of our warehouse pictures, i forgot to updated with ALL our Mattress-in-a-box(es)…visit our mattress store within 26 hours and you can save 20% OFF our retail prices…) (By the way, the only tightest and best stuff get marked as “Magic” under our category section…)

SparkFun just moved into some bigger and better offices; they are still in Boulder and cranking out orders for various kits, components, and more. We dropped by the new space last week to check it out and congratulate them on their expansion - [Flickr Photoset]
