ASUS Eee PC 1201T Hands-on Review!

I am a huge fan of ASUS laptops ever since I bought an Eee PC 1000HE netbook and also my latest ASUS UL30Vt-X1, which I am actually using it to blog this very blog post about another ASUS laptop, the ASUS Eee PC 1201T.

The Eee PC 1201T is probably the best “value” 12-inch netbook from ASUS. There no word on the pricing of this new netbook but from the cheaper AMD CPU used (and I think the first AMD CPU on ASUS netbook btw), this 12-inch should be cheaper over its Intel brothers such as the 1201N. I doubt the final pricing will be over $350 for this one.

Of course, I would rather get a 13.3″ laptop such as the UL30Vt or even wait for the upcoming UL30Jt, for 1.3 inches more you can get a helluva better processor, graphic card, and most importantly 12 hours of battery life instead of 6.

I am not sure if 12-inches qualify for a “netbook” but hey, the 1201T is portable and light. Even for me, a 10-inch screen simply doesn’t cut it even if it’s super portable. I rather sacrifice my back for 2 more inches of screen.

The ASUS 1201T comes with an AMD Congo MV40 1.6Ghz CPU with embedded AMD HD3200 graphics card, 1 or 2GB of DDR2 memory, 250GB hard drive, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth, webcam, and a 6 hour 6-cell battery.

Chrome Hack – How to Install Google Chrome OS on Eee PC!

Here’s a rather fun Chrome hack that shows you how to install Google Chrome OS open source Chromium on Eee PC. I think this hack should work all across most Eee PCs as hardware is pretty much the same. Also note that this uses a 4GB USB flash drive as boot, which allows install practically on most netbooks.

It’s actually a Chromium OS build by Hexxeh and he has a list of compatible netbooks that you can run Chrome OS on. (You can also build your own version of Chrome OS by following Google’s instructions here.)

I am still debating whether to switch to Google Chrome OS or not but I might as soon as I get my new 13-in ASUS Ul30A laptop. The Windows XP on my EeePC works pretty great right now and I don’t see a reason for me to switch just yet, especially I have a need to run a Sprint broadband card on the Chrome OS, which I believe doesn’t support it yet.

Oh yeah, one more thing, I am blogging at the Starbucks across the Metreon, taking a break from the San Frnacisco Auto Show, going back to take more photos/videos soon.

Best Netbook Review – Eee PC 1000HE!

For the last 3 months, I have been enjoying the best netbook ever, the Eee PC 1000HE. It’s the very first netbook I’ve bought but I can say that there’s enough cool little features that it allows me to be practically everywhere. I am no longer stuck in my home to get my work done. A lot of times, you will find me near Ocean Beach in San Francisco, firing away more blog posts. (Yes, I do setup my tent too.)

Anyways, let me tell you “everything” you wanted to know about this little Eee PC beast.

First off, this Eee PC 1000HE has a battery life of over 5 hours. (The specs say 9 hours but I found more along 5 hours, which is still great over conventional laptops.)

Second, this Eee PC 1000HE’s touchpad is just like the iPhone, you can scroll with two fingers, zoom in and out, and more. Just this feature let’s me do things with a 1024×600 pixel screen, much faster than traditional touchpads or even an external mouse. I just love the fact that I don’t have to carry a separate mouse to get my work done fast.

Third, Eee PC 1000HE is cheap, only $383.94 on Amazon. I don’t have to worry if I drop it or lose it, I can always get another one as it’s about the price of an iPhone.

If you are a road warrior, I highly recommend you to get one of these for those short trips where you do not need a full-fledged laptop. I also carry a Sprint USB broadband modem, which lets me connect to the internet practically everywhere I go where there’s a cellular connection.

Every one of my friends I have showed my netbook to are amazed and more amazed when I tell them how much I bought it for.

I even took it to Disneyland last month, all blogging away while I waited to take pictures with Mickey Mouse. Yes, you can actually computer while walking too because it weighs only 3.2 pounds.

This IS the best netbook on the market right now. ASUS practically “invented” netbooks and I don’t see how you can go wrong with this one.

I plan on actually getting a couple more, 1 for my bedroom, 1 for my bathroom, and another one for couch-surfing.

Laptop News Roundup!

Here’s Laptop news Roundup for today:

Dell will be releasing their Studio 15 soon, the HD-equipped laptop will come with nice subwoofers which I am having a hard time believing there will be much bass if any.

Gateway has their new laptop line, the TC7306u and TC7307u series. I am not a fan of Gateway laptops but who knows, they might make a come-back soon.

Dell is tinkering with Arm processors for low power, Linux laptops. It’s a good thing but I am not sure if ARM processors are fast enough yet for laptops. They have been traditionally used for PDAs and bunch of embedded devices.

ASUS announces their newest Eee PC equipped with WiMAX, a smart move.

Freescale, the manufacturer of many CPU devices, is planning an Android-powered laptop, very similar to the Movit device we saw earlier.

Samsonite showcases their new laptop case L35 XL, check it out.

You can get the ghetto-laptop stand for just $10.

I have been covering a lot of netbooks over at our Laptop Blog, LaptopPimp.com so here’s a re-cap of what went around the laptop world last week or so:

Samsung NC10 Netbook is available now on Amazon, it’s probably been awhile last time Samsung sold any laptops in the U.S. but netbooks must be something they are really rooting for.

Wifi HAVA HDTV unit can let you watch your HDTV from anywhere via WiFi and broadband connection. That means no more paying for hotel TV!

ASUS Eee PC 1000HA is available on Amazon, this is probably the best netbook for the price out there today. There’s also Eee PC 1000HD which comes with Linux instead of Windows XP but I still would go with the 1000HA because of its 160GB storage.

Windows 7 can obviously run pretty well on laptops. Of course, don’t miss out on our Windows 7 review.

Read Dell Mini 12 rumors and reviews to find out what Dell has been working on behind the scenes lately.

HP is also working on their new HP Mini 1000 behind the scenes so watch out for that.

Amazon Netbook Review Roundup!

Here’s a round of of best netbooks you can get from Amazon today from our Laptop Blog:

Eee PC 1000H is probably the top-of-the-line netbook to get right now as it offers a 10″ screen,160GB hard drive, Windows XP, and Atom 1.6Ghz processor. I like the fact that Eee PCs have been leading the netbook industry and you won’t be disappointed carrying this 3.1 pound beast in your bag. The battery life is estimated at 7 hours but I think as long as you get about 4-5 hours on this, that’s good enough.

There’s other models of Eee PCs, but this one is the that will give you bang for you buck as it has the largest harddrive.

Eee PC 1000H – $479 at Amazon

MSI Wind 10″ netbook is probably the 2nd best choice right now as far as performance and speed goes. This MSI netbook comes with 10″ screen, 80GB harddrive, 1.6 Ghz Atom processor, Windows XP, and weighs just 2.1 pounds. I do like it but I’d rather get the Eee PC 1000H which comes with larger harddrive and longer battery life.

MSI Wind 10″ – $549.99 at Amazon

Acer Aspire One 8.9″ netbook is next with 160GB harddrive, Atom N270 processor, Windows XP, and 1GB memory. I think 8.9″ is too small for any netbook but if you must get an 8.9″ screen, get this one as it comes loaded with features you won’t see on the other 8.9″ netbooks. The 5.5 hour battery life should last you at least 3-4 hours.

HP 2133 Mini-note is also a good alternative if you need a slightly bigger resolution than all the other 3 above netbooks. The HP 2133 netbook comes with 120GB harddrive, 1.6Ghz VIA processor, and 2GB of memory. The worst thing about this laptop is that it comes with Windows Vista, power-hogging operating system that’s not a good fit for mini-laptops. I do like is the 8.9-inch screen with WXGA (1280 x 768) resolution, webcam, and 92% full-size keyboard, which beats all the other netbooks.

But yes, this would still be my last choice as it costs as much as your 15.4″ laptops.

HP 2133 Mini-note – $640.98 via Amazon

Well, there you have the best netbooks Latop Pimp thinks. If you really must get a netbook, get the Eee PC1000H, it’s the best value and performance for your money.

Now, if you think all these netbooks don’t live up to your standards, get a regular laptop or better yet, wait about 6 months and you should see 5 times better netbooks.

Netbooks are still in the early stages and you need to consider the fact that they are “beta” products that manufacturers are still testing. After 6-12months, we should expect more netbooks that are faster and better.

Eee PC Hack – How to Make your Eee PC Boot in just 5 seconds!

Here’s a cool Eee PC Hack that uses a modified Fedora Linux to speed up the boot time of Eee PCs. I think this shows how great linux operating systems are modification by uses. I am sure you can do something similar with Windows, but not to the extent this hack does.

How did they do it? Arjan said it starts with the right attitude. “It’s not about booting faster, it’s about booting in 5 seconds.” Instead of saving a second here and there, set a time budget for the whole system, and make each step of the boot finish in its allotted time. And no cheating. “Done booting means CPU and disk idle,” Arjan said. No fair putting up the desktop while still starting services behind the scenes. (An audience member pointed out that Microsoft does this.) The “done booting” time did not include bringing up the network, but did include starting NetworkManager. A system with a conventional hard disk will have to take longer to start up: Arjan said he has run the same load on a ThinkPad and achieved a 10-second boot time.

Wow, someone has figured out a way to run Mac OS X on an Eee PC! Of course, you cannot use your sound, WiFi, LAN, and pretty much anything of necessity but it’s cool simply due to the fact that you are running Mac OS X on a PC.

While many would question why you’d want to go to the trouble of installing OS X when there are many Windows and Linux distributions available out of the box? Maybe you’re looking for a challenge. Installing OS X on non-Apple hardware provides plenty of chances to flex those (very metaphorical) geek muscles.

Asus Eee Sticks like Wii Nunchucks?

Looks like Asus Eec Sticks will be available for PC games.

My only concern is that they might be violating some copyright or patents of Nintendo…let’s wait till they sue. In the meanwhile, grab one of these as quickly as you can.

These Eec nunchuks will definitely go well with the new Eec Linux boxes.

Nintendo Wii-like wireless gaming is coming to PCs, with Asus launching the Eee Stick, a package including two controllers that use motion sensors so people can bowl, slash swords and play other games on a PC.

The Eee Stick controllers are designed for PC gamers, not game console users, and will initially be bundled with Asus’ Eee PC low-cost laptops and the company’s new desktop Eee Box.
