DROID Hack – How to Make USB Host-Mode Dongle!

For those of you trying to use your USB peripherals on the Droid, you might want to take a look at this hack that involves making a USB dongle that will allow you to connect your devices to the Droid. Of course, you will have to hack the Android further to make any of them work but still, it’s a good start. Most USB devices should work without much modification though, it looks like.

The USB hardware on the Droid is actually capable of USB-OTG (meaning that it can act as both host and peripheral), however it only possesses a standard USB Micro-B port instead of the Micro-AB port that you would normally get from an OTG device (such as the N810). With a minimal amount of effort (and tolerance of a few bugs) it’s possible to enable the B port as a host interface (as OTG says you should be able to do), meaning it supplies power and acts as the bus controller. It’s actually pretty easy; I can easily think of about a hundred million ways to make this useful on the Droid (think: plug any USB hardware you like into your Droid, as long as it works in Linux it should work in Android).

Okay, the guys over at Engadget are always receiving “free” stuff and also complaining but heck, I am jealous. :p

Anyways, they have some “pictures” you can see before they do a full review of this new HP Firebird gaming PC.

The Firebird itself looks just as nice in our living room as it did at CES, but there are some sad surprises here — the super-heavy external power brick has a troublesomely lame connector, and the included wireless keyboard is pretty simply crap — the slightest downward pressure basically bends it in half. Plus, we’re not at all sure why the mouse and keyboard require a plug-in USB dongle — why not just build the receiver into the gigantic chassis?

Lol, I wonder if HP likes to be criticized.

Well, Sony PSP GPS dongle does look pretty impressive, now you have more reasons to mount it on your car besides the fact that in the US, laws were passed so you can mount your GPS.

Today Sony’s PSP guys gave us a heads-up on what’s next for the portable. Two years after launching in Japan, we’re finally going to get GPS action for the PSP on this side of the pond. Happily, it looks like we’ll be getting a much better package than Japan for a change.

Here’s a cute green wireless mouse from Google (GOOG) that’s made out of recycled plastic. Great job Googlers!

The recycled mini wireless mouse is in fact made from recycled plastic, as is the packaging that it comes with.

But the in general the mouse is a typical wireless mouse with the dongle hidden inside the red or blue mouse body. It also has included in the $19.20 price tag are the two AAA batteries.
