DIY Wordpress HACK – How to decrease the load on your Wordpress blog by 5 factors!

Here’s how to decrease the load on your Wordpress blog by 5 factors! (if you are running a dedicated server)I was digging today for some stuff on digg and noticed this post about Wordpress performance.

Since Zedomax runs Wordpress, I decided to take a look.

Elliott was running only one server yet he claims that he can handle 1,000,000 hits a day on one server!

FYI, Zedomax is running 3 servers now and the load was at about 0.80 to 1.0 on an average day for the HTTP server and 0.60 to 0.80 for the MYSQL server. (The other HTTP server is for the other blogs)

So through Elliott’s suggestions at changing httpd.conf, my.cnf, php.ini, and installing eAccelerator, my load on the server dropped at least 5 times!

The load for the HTTP server is now at about 0.20 for the HTTP server and 0.15 for the MYSQL server.

Bottom Line

If you run Wordpress blogs, make sure to do the suggested changes and you will definitely notice the increased speed of your website loads.

Here’s some additions to the Elliott’s HOWTO for installing eAccelerator.

When I’m trying to execute phpize, I got this:

/usr/local/php/bin/phpize: line 57: aclocal: command not found

This means you don’t have phpize installed on your Fedora. You can install the php-devel which has the phpize in it like this:

“yum install php-devel”

I got this error when I was trying to install the above:

“Check that the correct key URLs are configured for this repository”

So you gotta do this:

Edit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and replace the line

gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora

with:

gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

Then when you do “./configure”, if you get an error, you need to install some more tools. (which wasn’t documented)

So I installed Autoconf and Automake by using:

“yum install autoconf”

and

“yum install automake”

This might be basic for an experience linux-er but it took me couple hours to get it so hopefully it will help ya.

Then you can follow the rest of the directions.

Here’s a cool ethernet-enabled mechanical hit counter. It seems kind of over-powered using a relay but this can be a great source of information for similar applications.

So, when you ping salem, you’re actually hitting my firewall, which redirects ICMP type 8 (Echo Request) so the board, whose internal address is 192.168.0.2.The BX decodes the ping request and asserts a TTL output high for 50ms. This turns on the transistor, which fires the relay, which cycles the power, which increments the counter. Then, the webcam takes a picture of it every 5 seconds and stores the image in the www directory. Voila!

Okay, it seems like there’s a lot of people making money just blogging including this guy, John Chow.

Check out John Chow who made $7000 already in February. Actually some of his articles are very helpful such as the ReviewMe ad you see we put up today on the sidebar.

I like how he uses terms like affiliate whores and google whores. Just seemed very new down-to-earth terms for me to understand the whole blog marketing crap.

We have been messing around with Pligg, a digg-like social CMS (content management system).
First we made wagthis.com hosted on Dreamhost but after running for a month the shared server seems to go down a lot.
Since then, we made a new one with better hardware on wagg.it.
(It took us like a month to register the domain name through a european registry but we were finally able to get it working…)

It’s a blog voting community where you can submit your blog posts and other bloggers can vote on posts. It’s still experimental at this point but check it out and if your blog post in on there, make sure to wagg it!

Hehe, too bad my account got erased, they thought I was doing some “unusual” hacking,

Cool, now you can use some regular PC camera to scan 3D objects!

DAVID is a freeware software for laser range scanning. All you need is a PC, a camera (e.g. a webcam), a background corner, and a laser which projects a line onto the object you want to scan. So everyone can use it to scan objects without high costs; this is the big advantage over commercial solutions which are rather expensive.

DAVID has been developed by the computer scientists Dr. Simon Winkelbach and Sven Molkenstruck from the Institute for Robotics and Process Control, Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. The concept has been published as a paper at the German Association for Pattern Recognition (DAGM, Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Mustererkennung) and can be downloaded here.

The object you want to scan has to be put into the corner of a room or in front of two planes with an exact angle of 90°. The camera of course has to be pointed towards the object. The special thing about our solution is that you freely hold the laser in your hand, “brushing” the laser line over the object. Meanwhile the computer automatically calculates 3D coordinates of the scanned object surface. See the screenshots to get an impression of the software.

Zedomax DIY121 – How to make your own “PS3 SIXAXIS controller” style BASIC-programmable USB device!

USB devices are easy for users to install and set up (as long as everything is working correctly). Often, you just plug in a USB device and it works immediately. This is especially true for input devices, such as mice and keyboards.

Those devices conform to a specification layered on top of the USB protocol: Human Interface Device. Almost any possible type of input is defined; an entire “report descriptor” language is used to tell the computer how to process the input. This is not very simple to implement; dozens of specific requests must be handled properly. There are many steps between plugging in a USB device and being able to use it; these all take place in a few milliseconds and failure of any step means the device will not work.

What if you didn’t have to worry about any of that? What if you could use your favorite microcontroller, do “something” and the input appears on the computer in the correct format? You wouldn’t have to worry about complex USB code, HID specifications, or breaking your USB code when adding the other functions you need. You wouldn’t have to worry much about writing optimized code, or always getting in the way of USB interrupts.

HID Portal

That’s exactly what I decided to do. A couple of years ago, I developed a USB device and went through all the headaches of getting a USB HID up and running. Since I already had the hard work done, I decided to add a method of receiving data from another microcontroller and using that data as the input stream for the HID code. I wanted to use a Cubloc BASIC-programmable controller to process my input data and send it to the HID Portal. My test application would be an accelerometer-based HID joystick; simply plug the device into the computer and it will work.

It doesn’t have to be a joystick; it could be a keyboard, a mouse, or many other controls defined by the HID standard. It’s possible to add volume control buttons to a device…maybe have a circuit mute your computer when the phone rings? Turn any voltage input into a joystick axis, any switch into a button? Anything is possible!

Update:I decided to shrink the CUBLOC hardware down to a CB220, and fit everything into an airplane model. The model was chosen to match an airplane available in the Heroes of the Pacific game we used to test the joystick interface.

Hardware Explanation

The HID Portal is based on an old project of mine, based on an MC68HC908JB8 microcontroller and programmed in assembly language. For certain reasons I can’t actually release the code right now, but there are plenty of other USB projects out there which could be adapted for this purpose. There’s an open-sourced soft USB implementation for the ATtiny microcontroller, for example.

My microcontroller doesn’t have built-in I2C or SPI, so I needed to implement one of my own. I also didn’t have interrupt pins available, meaning my solution needed to be based on polling. When all was said and done and optimized, I couldn’t detect edges faster than 16Khz. This is about ten times slower than the shift output available from the CUBLOC controller, so I couldn’t use that. I ended up writing my own shift-out routine in BASIC to get the data to the HID Portal. This could be avoided by using a microcontroller that has SPI or I2C built in already, but the JB8 is what I had on hand.

I use three signals to communicate with the CUBLOC controller. First, there is a CLK signal. The HID Portal detects a rising edge. At that point, it reads the value present on the DATA line. This is shifted into a register until a byte has been received, and the code moves to the next byte. The /RST line is a way to synchronize the start of each data packet in case there was any spurious input; when LOW it sets the packet and bit indexes to zero.

The HID Portal is currently programmed to act as a joystick with three axes and eight buttons. I’ve also tested it as a keyboard. In future development, I’d like to make the HID Portal more flexible; let the external controller select the device type and how many of each input are required. It would be the most flexible if it directly accepted HID report descriptors, but that opens up the possibility to make more mistakes and end up with a non-working device.

The accelerometer is a DE-ACCM3D from Dimension Engineering. The CUBLOC simply reads the voltage on its ADIN ports and converts to a value between -127 and 127.

We’ve received word that a respected member of our tech community, James Kim (whom many of you may know as CNET’s senior editor of digital audio), and his family have gone missing. As we understand it, last weekend James, his wife Kati (above right), and his very young girls Penelope (left) and Sabine (baby), drove from their home in the SF Bay Area to Seattle. They were expected back some time Sunday, but were last seen by a hotel clerk at 5:45 PM on Saturday in or between Gold Beach or Portland, Oregon. We sincerely do hope they are all safe, and our hearts go out to the Kim family.

We’ll have more information as we get it. If you have any information as to the Kim family’s whereabouts, please contact the SFPD at 415-558-5508 during normal business hours, and 415-553-1071 after hours.

Social Networking can be fun and useful

Above is the fortune cookie thing I got today at my favorite Chinese restaurant, well I guess the Social scene can be fun today.

Wikipedia has good stuff about it, but personally, the bookmarking feature is really cool since you can save your favorite sites on the web instead of your computer. If you happen to be somewhere else and not in front of your P, you can still access your favorite sites.

A social network is a map of the relationships between individuals, indicating the ways in which they are connected through various social familiarities ranging from casual acquaintance to close familial bonds. The term was first coined in 1954 by J. A. Barnes (in: Class and Committees in a Norwegian Island Parish, “Human Relations”).

cool way to get you started in PSP porting…

Windows 95 actually runs quite well but don’t expect it to be a speed demon. It takes about 10 minutes to boot but afterwards it’s pretty usable. I was able to do things like: open “My computer” and browse the virtual hard drive, complete a whole game of Minesweeper and run various other applications. Now you too can get your Minesweeper fix on the go I’ve also tested DLX Linux which comes pre-packaged with Bochs and it works just fine. However, I couldn’t do much with it because there’s no keyboard support. If you want to do your word processing on it then wait until keyboard support is implemented (though I doubt it will be any fun using the joystick).
