Dell Mini Hack - How to install a GPS!

Here’s a cool hack that shows you how to install a GPS seamlessly into your Dell Mini Inspiron 9 netbook.

I started by tearing the Mini down and seeing if it was even possible. Luckily, there’s a bit of space around where the Bluetooth adapter is located. It wasn’t much, but it looked like enough, so I ordered the smallest USB GPS receiver I could find. It’s a nice unit with a SkyTraQ chipset and support for AGPS. Once I used the included utility to download an AGPS update into the unit, it gets a location fix in about five seconds after a reset.

Inspiron DIY Hack - How to Run OS-X on a Dell Mini Inspiron 9!

Looks like someone was able to install OS-X on a Dell Mini, nice…

The steps to Leopard-ize the mini are actually quite simple and easy to follow. After you download the slipstreamed ISO and burn the 3.2GB ISO to a DVD you boot up the Dell mini off a external DVD drive (Press 0 (Zero) at the BIOS screen) and installed Leopard as usual.

HP shifting focus to Linux in order to get over Vista Unpopularity!

HP shifting focus to Linux in order to get over Vista Unpopularity!

HP shifting focus to Linux in order to get over Vista Unpopularity!

Well, I am not a big fan of Vista, maybe XP at the least, but here’s another great news that HP might be using Linux to increase sales while not having to deal with Vista’s unpopularity.

If you have noticed, many computer manufacturers including HP, Dell, and others who have been putting the sign, “This company recommends Vista”.

Now, that’s what I don’t get.  How could companies expect to increase computer sales while recommending Vista, an operating system touted to be more incompatible than their previous sibling, Windows XP.

With all that out there, HP is finally shifting its focus to provide fully-installed Linux systems which will save the consumers about $100-200 over Vista.  (That’s right, you no longer have to pay for what you don’t use)

Since Linux OS is free, consumers can pretty much get the Linux version and simply install Windows XP to get going instead of having to deal with Vista’s horrible uninstallation process.

Already, Google has proved the value of Linux operating system through its Android developement.

Mind you, Linux operating system has been developed nicely by the open source crowd for the last 10 years to one day beat out Windows out of the market. Yey!

According to Businesweek, HP has been quietly working on two projects aimed at bypassing unpopular features in Vista and possibly competing with Apple down the line. The first involves developing software that modifies Vista to make it easier to use. That much has been confirmed. However, rumor has it that a second “Skunk Works” operation has been going on behind closed doors that has a much loftier goal—building a customized replacement OS based on the Linux platform.

Okay, I do bash Microsoft a lot but here’s a really cool multi-touch demo from Microsoft!

The thing is running Dell’s Latitude XT Tablet, one of Microsoft’s core monolpoly gang banger members.

Posted in Consumer, Suppliers by david on the June 7th, 2007 at 5:00 am

Who would have though that we would ever see this, but they have gone ahead and made a lot of people very happy, for now they can go down to their local Wal-Mart and touch a Dell machine before having to pay for it.

The adverts show just the beginning of what has got to be something big.

So what do they have?

The Dell Dimension E521, dual-core Athlon, 1GB RAM, 320GB hard drive, Vista Home Premium, and a 19-inch monitor for $698!

As this is just beginning we should be seeing some special deals coming into the stores, hopefully we may even get to see the rumored $500 model in due course.

Dell Ubuntu

Posted in Business, Consumer, Cool, Earth, Educational, Entertainment, Linux, Ubuntu, Web by max on the May 2nd, 2007 at 6:50 pm

Dell Ubuntu

Cool, Dell is going to be supporting Ubuntu! This is a sign that Linux and open source movement are taking over the world soon not to mention the cool open source CMS softwares like Wordpress, Joomla, Pligg, etc…etc…  This is a surprise from the company that announced to not ship their products with Linux in the past.

Ever since we heard that Dell would ship computers with Linux pre-installed, we wondered which flavor it would be. It doesn’t really come as a surprise that it will be Ubuntu, which Michael Dell uses it on his home laptop.

The official announcement is expected anytime now, but we got the heads up from Ubuntu contributor Fabián Rodríguez. His post is down (thanks, Digg) but can be seen on Dugg Mirror.
