This Wireless Flash Trigger is a radio remote system for firing hotshoe or PC-connected flash units wirelessly. It consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter fits into a camera’s hotshoe and the receiver clips onto the hotshoe base of a battery-powered flash unit. Just turn the receiver on by sliding over the power switch, and then take a photo. That’s it. A radio signal is transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver that instructs the flash to fire.

The wireless flash trigger costs only $23.69, which is a much cheaper than investing on a high-end camera that comes with wireless flash controller.

Samsung releases their new HD camcorder SMX-C14 and SMX-C10, both HD camcorders come with 16GB of internal memory plus SD card slots for expansion. I’ve seen a big array of great HD cameras lately, but I don’t think none of them are as great as far as price and function are concerned. These HD cams are only available in South Korea right now, I might have to fly over there to pick one up next week.

The SMX-C14 and SMX-C10 also incorporate Samsung’s play-edit-sharing program called intelli studio. The built-in intelli-studio program allows consumers to connect the camcorder to any computer via USB and edit and play their video without having to install supporting software. intelli-studio also facilitates the process of uploading users’ content to popular video sharing Web sites. HD Camera/Camcorder Review Under $200!

Well, I am about to buy an HD camera/camcorder so I figured I’d do a market analysis (or review) of all the HD camera/camcorders out there that are under $200.

For one, I am looking for following qualities in an HD camera:

HD quality (at least 720P) videos – I want to be able to record high-res videos that I can also upload to high-res video websites.
Ability to use SD cards for extra memory or a hard disk – I don’t want a fixed internal memory, that’d make the camcorder completely useless if I am on a boat and I run out of memory. (No, I don’t want to bring my laptop with me everywhere I go.)
Price – I want to bang for my dollar, I am sure you would want that too. I don’t really feel like spending over $200 on an HD camera.
Size – At least I want the HD camera to fit in my hands easily and it’s portable. I don’t want something too big that I can’t take along on a world travel.

That said, let me review couple of HD cameras that might be candidates or not:

Flip Mino HD

First, I looked into the Flip Mino HD, which is probably the smallest-sized HD camera out there but the downfall is that you cannot use an external memory card. After recording 60 minutes of HD video, your Flip basically becomes “useless” until videos have been transferred to your PC. I can’t believe the guys making Flip didn’t think of this, 8GB internal memory is great but still a joke for recording 1+ hours of video.

Pros

Small-size, you can practically carry it and capture while you snowboard, ski, or whatever.
720P HD

Cons

No external memory
No contrast/lighting controls
Crude Camcorder functions – Mini isn’t supposed to be a full-out camcorder, that’s why it’s a “Minooo”.

Aiptek A-HD+ 1080P

UPDATE: Aiptek really sucks, please don’t get it, get the Mino HD instead.

I have never heard of Aiptek before but this new 1080P digital camcorder is affordable, accepts SD cards, and price is actually cheaper than the Flip MinoHD. Aiptek also has a 720P version for about $130 but I’d probably spend $20 more on the 1080P version.

Pros

1080P HD resolution, this will be perfect for playing your home videos on your HDTV or even uploading great resolution videos to YouTube and other video sites.
Priced at just over $150, I don’t see how you can go wrong with this one. You can always buy a new one if you lose it or break it so you feel okay to throw this around normal duties.
Size is pretty small too, not bulky and will be slightly bigger than your average digital camera
You can fit up to a 32GB SDHC card, that’s a lot of recording time and you can get bunch of them for even longer recording times.

Cons

Aiptek isn’t a proven brand for camcorders

DXG 720P HD Camera

The DXG HD 720P digital camcorder might be the cheaper, better clone of the Flip Mino series. I tend to like the fact that you can actually use external memory on this one and price is a real bargain at just over $100.

If you are too serious about videos you are taking and you want to spend the least, this might just do the job perfect as you won’t have to break your arm or legs to get one.

Pros

Size is really small, portable.
720P HD with external memory slot, you don’t need to be stuck with 60 minutes unlike the Flip series.

Cons

Again, like the Flip, these’s no advanced controls for advanced video control. (Did I say that right? You get the idea.)

Kodak Zi6 Pink Camcorder

If you are a pink-color-lover, you might want to consider the Kodak Zi6. Aside from being pink, this little beast can do 720P and has external memory slot for SD cards.

Pros

Pink, a favorite color among females, could be good gift
720P HD
External memory accepted
Small, portable size

Cons

Maybe pink isn’t your color.

Sony Webbie HD Camcorder

Sony has been always on top of their digital goods and the Sony Webbie HD camcorder is a good one with 1080P resolution and external memory slots for Sony memory cards. If you already own bunch of Sony cameras with Sony memory, this might be a great way to use your extra memory.

As for me, I can’t stand Sony’s proprietary memory cards that are not really standardized by the industry, I will stick with SD cards.

Pros

Size is kinda big, won’t fit in your pocket.
1080P HD videos are no problem
External memory
3 colors to choose from: Purple, Metal, and Orange.

Cons

External memory must be Sony. Boo. That’s the only turnoff for me.

Well, Amazon has always been a good source for low prices and they are constantly changing so if you want to check out the latest and best digital camcorders, check this out too.

As for me, I think I might just go with the Aiptek. For $150 and all the camcorder features I need, this might just do the job. 1080P, 43 reviews on Amazon mostly positive, SD card external memory upto 32GB, and will fit in my pocket.

I am just glad I didn’t spend $299 at Wal-mart yesterday on an oversized Samsung that was really “outdated”.

Don’t ever buy stuff retail, especially electronic goods at mass-retailers, without first doing your homework online. You will be glad you read this blog post, now you know what features are important to a hacker, maker, and DIYer such as me.

Check out this cool DIY replica fighter jet that can actually run at 5MPH. Of course, that’s on the ground only but I wouldn’t mind having one of these in my garage, great for weekend neighborhood showoffs.

Measuring seven metres in length and four metres in width the £4,000 F-35 Lightning II Fighter Jet has been built at a scale of 1:2.

Resembling Tom Cruise’s jet out of Top Gun, it took 3,500 hours to construct the model.

The plane is constructed from iron, wood, hard foam, fibreglass and lots of epoxy filler, comes complete with cameras and monitors inside the cockpit, and is capable of achieving speeds of 5mph on the road.

The plane’s designer, Arthur van Poppel, 49, from Tilburg, Holland, said: “I finished the plane at the beginning of last year.

“I had no drawings to work from, just some pictures and a small plastic Revell model to use as an example.

Talk about eco-friendly, this submarine probably is the most green submarine ever made.

Way cool huh?

I am gonna go make mine too now and start a new business.

Tao Xiangli made the 1.6 tonnes submarine mostly from metal barrels and improvised parts by hand, reports Zhong’an Online.

“Metal barrels are possibly the best material for me because of their low cost,” said Tao, a migrant worker in Beijing.

The 20ft submarine is cramped inside with room for only one person but it features pressure metres, monitoring cameras, a TV set, oxygen supply and headlights.

This VW can do 235MPG! It’s really small and cramped but hey, the VeeDub gets almost 5 times better mileage than my motorcycle.

The 1L is a lightweight two person vehicle made out of a magnesium frame covered by an unpainted carbon fiber skin. Every component of the vehicle is intended to reduce the vehicles weight. Aluminum brakes, carbon fiber wheels, titanium hubs, and ceramic bearings all contribute to the vehicle’s light weight of a mere 290 kg. To reduce the weight even further, and to increase the aerodynamics of the vehicle, there are no rear view mirrors. Instead, the car is equipped with cameras that display visual information to the driver via the internal LCD screen.

Wow, now you can use njection.com to find out where the speed camera traps are. Since I live in San Francisco and there are so many speed traps everywhere, I did a search for my zip code and that’s what you see in the above screenshot. Pretty accurate too as I can verify some of the speed traps from back of my head.

Shannon Atkinson launched Njection.com as a place for gearheads to shoot the breeze about anything and everything auto-related. It wasn’t long before he sensed a theme in the posts. “One of the biggest topics on the site became speed traps and cameras,” Atkinson told us. “People want to know about those whether they’re a truck driver, a road warrior or just someone who wants to drive without worrying about it.”

So Atkinson added Speedtrap, a feature that combines drivers’ tips with Microsoft Virtual Earth to identify speed traps – either a real, live cop with a radar gun or one of those damned cameras – throughout the U.S. There’s even a few foreign cities, such as London, Toronto and Rome.

Now, the information can be downloaded directly to portable navigation devices from Garmin, Mio, TomTom and others via Njection.com so that drivers can pinpoint speed traps on a given route. Atkinson says the identity of Njection’s many speed-trap tipsters is kept confidential, and they include more than a few police officers who like the site because what “they’re mostly interested in is getting people to drive safely.”

Now this may be considered good by some people and really bad by others, but whatever the general consensus of opinion this thing is out and no doubt somebody somewhere is using this to spy on someone else.

This device uses the lobster vision, which is exactly what they say it is. It uses the same principle of vision as a lobster would to find its way through the murky waters.

But there are issues here too, the devices uses a type of x ray, which I believe could be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands or even the right hands, so should this device be available to just anyone? I hope not!

Device that can see through walls

NASA creates flying telescope

This is an attempt to get some great images from space, but without the costs involved by maintaining the Hubble telescope in space, which is great but hugely expensive.

This forms part of the NASA Origins program and by working with the DLR who are the German Aerospace Centre they have developed a flying telescope inside a Boeing 747SP. This will fly at 47,000 feet and should some really cool images from space.

This could be a viable alternative to the Hubble and the space used to maintain it, however we will need to wait for until around 2009to see if it works as good as hope, when it is fully operational.

Now you can take your cellphone underwater with you with this underwater cellphone cover. How clever is that! Someone should have thought of this earlier.

It even allows you to take clear pictures! (goggles for your cell?)

I know the first picture is difficult to see as it is a translucent case on a white background…as we say in Japan, shouganai. Cell phone cameras are getting better so you can use them for taking photos once reserved for your pocket camera. For underwater shots, Corega gives us a waterproof case, the CG-WP-C10 and CG-WP-C20. The two cases are different sizes so one of them should fit your portable.

This neat little camera and printer from Zink will print off Polaroid type prints, which are around two inch by three inch in size. It will come in very handy for people who like to take quick photos and see the results straight away.

This is a nice little way of being able to shoot an image and instantly print it off, the only real problem with any of these types of cameras and printers is the fact that the film actually costs quite a lot, so we will need to wait and see what the actual costs are going to be.

Tripods for cameras are great unfortunately even though they three legs, hence the tri, they can sometimes be a bit unstable and either topple over or in some cases it may just move slightly because of the uneven surface that it is placed on.

But never fear there is always help at hand, and this time it comes in the form of the All Terrain Tripod from red envelope, this unique design means that the legs of the tripod can be twisted around the anything suitable to give you’re camera the right height and a secure footing, no more watching your expensive camera falling to the ground as it takes photos of you running towards it.

Prices for the stand start at around $25 rising to $45 depending on the size.
