DIY HACK - HOWTO build a “Fire Alarm” Alarm Clock

Fire Alarm Alarm Clock

Wow, this has to be the loudest and best solution for you doozers.

Ever sleep-in because your alarm clock wasn’t loud enough? With this design that is guaranteed not to happen! This hack takes a standard cheap alarm clock, some interface components and a fire alarm bell to get the job done right. Normally these small alarm clocks use a piezo buzzer to attempt to wake you up. The alarm signal is hijacked from the clock circuit board and used as an input to the interface board

DIY HACK - HOWTO make your GIANT Blue LED Alarm Clock!

DIY HACK - HOWTO make your GIANT Blue LED Alarm Clock!

Check out this cool GIANT Blue LED Alarm Clock you can make!

I started by buying the LEDs and the alarm clocks.
I cut the tops off of the LEDs and filed them so that they would be diffused. (pic)
Using a home made blade I cut out the segments after marking them out with a stencil. (pic 1, pic 2, pic 3)
A piece of copper pipe to cut out the circles. (pic)
Then marked out where to put the LEDs. (pic 1, pic 2)
I bent the leads and glued the LEDs down. (pic)
Soldered wires from the LEDs to the alarm clock circuit board. (pic 1, pic 2)
I had to spray paint the styrofoam black because the light was leaking from one segment to another. (pic 1, pic 2)
With my home made blade I cut out two layers of grocery bag and two layers of translucent film, the kind used for rapping easter baskets. (pic 1, pic 2)
Here you can see the wires going out to the buttons in the back, the alarm on/off switch, battery backup clip, piezo element, transformer and circuit board. (pic)

Try taking this on vacation

The Japanese have some funny ideas about what cool and what not, but maybe they have gone just a little too far with this one.

grenade clock

The grenade alarm clock is very exciting way to get started in the morning, and all you have to do is throw it at a hard surface; a wall would do, in order to switch it off.

No prices yet, although I do not expect it to be going on sale in the states anyhow.

Philips Smart Light Alarm Clock

Cool light, I need this since I cannot get up easily and can get very cranky in the mornings…

You may still be reeling from that jarring alarm that scared you out of bed this morning, so here’s a concept from Philips that could change all that, an alarm clock with a soft light that fades up over a half an hour. You can adjust its ultimate brightness, and we’re assuming there’s some kind of alarm at the end of that cycle, just to make sure you’re awake.

Philips says this simulates a natural wakeup with the sunrise, when sunlight gradually begins to peek through your closed eyelids. That sends signals to your brain to stop producing melatonin, that sleep-inducing hormone that sometimes seems to kick in at the most inopportune times. The clock will be available in France this month, and everywhere else in 2007.

Chumby Open Source Wi-Fi Touch Screen Device

Posted in Consumer, Hack, Linux, Microcontroller, Wireless by max on the August 29th, 2006 at 4:59 pm

Wow, check out these chumbies, wifi enabled touch screen. Hmmm. If they came out with a Chumby phone, I’d get one.

“chumby is a small, wifi enabled, touch screen information device. When you take it out of the box and plug it in it is essentially a glorified alarm clock. But when you take a moment and register your particular Chumby at their website, it can become just about anything you like. A number of widgets are available now and can be enabled on Chumby with a click. And Since Chumby is completely open source and has made a HDK and SDK available for developers, expect modifications to come quickly.”
