Halloween DIY - How to Make Halloween Bloodbath Fountain!

Posted in A+Featured DIYs, Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, HOWTO, Projects by max on the October 10th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Yey, here’s another really gory halloween bloodbath fountain you can make for Halloween.

I haven’t ever participated in an Instructables contest so I thought I’d make something for this one instead of just stalking other people’s projects. You can make this without breaking the bank, and the construction is pretty straight forward so anybody can make it.

Try CozyURL for shortening your Affiliate URL!

Posted in A+Featured Web, Blog, Consumer, Cool, Web, WebApp, Wordpress by max on the October 10th, 2008 at 6:13 pm

Well, I’ve always wanted to make this site that would shorten your affiliate links and finally did it today so check it out, it’s called CozyURL.com:

Well, here’s another site called CozyURL.com I made today in about 2 hours while chatting on G-mail with Josh.

I didn’t add any graphics so it’s fast and you can easily access it from mobile devices too.

It’s basically a site that will shorten URLs like http://sdfkcs.com/jdsf923jfdsaf to http://CozyURL/120.

It’s a free site and your link will permanently remain so please knock yourself out the next time you need to shorten that long GoogleMaps URL, or simply want to remember one number for viewing the site on your mobile phone.

I might open-source the code since some of you might like to make your own, so leave a comment if you want it.

Photo Hack - How to Batch-Crop Photos!

Posted in A+Featured Hacks, Consumer, Cool, Digital Cameras, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, HOWTO, Hack, photography by max on the October 10th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Here’s a cool free Windows program called JPEGCrops that will let you batch-crop your photos while maintaining the aspect ratio.  This sure beats editing each photo one by one with Photoshop.

JPEGCrops is a Windows program, created for preparation of a batch of images for printing. It provides lossless cropping with fixed aspects using jpegtran.

The program is freeware for private use and is localized to danish, english, finnish, german, polish, portuguese, galician and japanese. Partly localized to czech, dutch, french, hungarian and italian.

Here’s another really “spooky” Halloween DIY that shows you how to make glowing eyes that will look scary at night.

Halloween Eyes is the first project using my LMDriver platform (which I’ve been working on, on and off, for about 4 years (real life can be very inconvenient)). The concept is simple; a pair of TERRIFYING disembodied eyes rendered on a 4 5×7 dot matrix displays which look about and blink every so often. Even though I was going for “terrifying”, the most common reaction was “cute”. Yeah, cute like a GHOST.

Don’t have a disco ball at your Halloween party?  Well, don’t worry you can make a Disco Ball costume and wear it in the dancing platform to refelct all those party lights.

I might actually make one here, it’s so cool.

Want to be the Discobelle of the Ball? This mirrored creation will be a crowd favorite!

Create a mobile party that will keep people dancing around you all night!

GM - “Bankruptcy is not an option”

Posted in A+Featured Auto, Auto, Cars, Consumer, Cool, Educational, Government, Industrial, News by max on the October 10th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

While GM and Ford’s stocks are plummeting to the bottom(the worst since 1950), GM states that “bankruptcy is not an option” as they still have billions of cash in hand. (which is washing away rather quickly)

Here’s an excerpt from LA Times:

“We face unprecedented challenges related to uncertainty in the financial markets globally and weakening economic fundamentals in many key markets,” Renee Rashid-Merem, a GM spokeswoman, told Bloomberg News on Thursday. “But bankruptcy is not an option GM is considering.”

According to Clark, a bankruptcy filing would probably have terrible effects on the residual value of cars and their warranties, making it even harder to sell new cars as consumers gravitate to other, more stable carmakers. That, he said, means that carmakers would choose to stay out of bankruptcy far longer than companies that might normally see it as a way out of untenable financial straits.

I think it’s a good thing that GM is trying to outlast this economic disaster, but I wouldn’t want to see any of my tax dollars going to fix their problems. As a owner of a GM car, I am sure my replacement parts and warranties would really be gone into the thin air, but this shouldn’t be a reason why Uncle Sam should help the big car companies.

My thoughts are still clear that business financials should not be paid for my U.S. citizens. It’s an outrage when that happens as I too, should be getting my expenses paid by the government.

I don’t think helping the car companies will do a great deal other than keeping them alive little bit longer (in case we happen to see Depression-era here in the U.S.).  Better way would be to let them go bankrupt, let’s focus our attention on the other 90% of U.S. economy and all the people who have lost jobs as of lately.

GM should help others before they ask the government for help, otherwise, it’s a bad business anyways.

Do you want to pay $20 billion to auto-makers out of your tax dollars?  Heck no, I worked too hard for the last couple years paying those ridiculous taxes that went into wars because of Bush.  Yes, I do deserve money before those big corporations, don’t you?

Halloween DIY - How to Make Solar Pumpkin Jack O Lantern!

Posted in A+Featured Earth, Consumer, Cool, Design, DoItYourself!, Earth, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, HOWTO, LED, Projects, Solar, lights by max on the October 10th, 2008 at 10:53 am

With everyone going solar crazy, here’s 2 cool DIYs that show you how to make solar pumpkin Jack-o-Lanterns.

The first one is pictured above and uses a solar torch (the ones used for garden lights).

The second one uses a smaller Solar LED unit.

I think both are great ideas for using existing solar gadgets into the pumpkin.

Well, knock yourself out with these two for the halloween and save some candles!

Amazon Netbook Review Roundup!

Posted in A+Featured Gadgets, Computer, Consumer, Cool, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, Laptop by max on the October 10th, 2008 at 9:50 am

Here’s a round of of best netbooks you can get from Amazon today from our Laptop Blog:

Eee PC 1000H is probably the top-of-the-line netbook to get right now as it offers a 10″ screen,160GB hard drive, Windows XP, and Atom 1.6Ghz processor.  I like the fact that Eee PCs have been leading the netbook industry and you won’t be disappointed carrying this 3.1 pound beast in your bag. The battery life is estimated at 7 hours but I think as long as you get about 4-5 hours on this, that’s good enough.

There’s other models of Eee PCs, but this one is the that will give you bang for you buck as it has the largest harddrive.

Eee PC 1000H - $479 at Amazon

MSI Wind 10″ netbook is probably the 2nd best choice right now as far as performance and speed goes.  This MSI netbook comes with 10″ screen, 80GB harddrive, 1.6 Ghz Atom processor, Windows XP, and weighs just 2.1 pounds.  I do like it but I’d rather get the Eee PC 1000H which comes with larger harddrive and longer battery life.

MSI Wind 10″ - $549.99 at Amazon

Acer Aspire One 8.9″ netbook is next with 160GB harddrive, Atom N270 processor, Windows XP, and 1GB memory.   I think 8.9″ is too small for any netbook but if you must get an 8.9″ screen, get this one as it comes loaded with features you won’t see on the other 8.9″ netbooks.  The 5.5 hour battery life should last you at least 3-4 hours.

Acer Aspire One 8.9″ Sapphire Blue $429.99 at Amazon

Acer Aspire One 8.9″ White $429.99 at Amazon

HP 2133 Mini-note is also a good alternative if you need a slightly bigger resolution than all the other 3 above netbooks.  The HP 2133 netbook comes with 120GB harddrive, 1.6Ghz VIA processor, and 2GB of memory.  The worst thing about this laptop is that it comes with Windows Vista, power-hogging operating system that’s not a good fit for mini-laptops.  I do like is the 8.9-inch screen with WXGA (1280 x 768) resolution, webcam, and 92% full-size keyboard, which beats all the other netbooks.

But yes, this would still be my last choice as it costs as much as your 15.4″ laptops.

HP 2133 Mini-note - $640.98 via Amazon

Well, there you have the best netbooks Latop Pimp thinks.  If you really must get a netbook, get the Eee PC1000H, it’s the best value and performance for your money.

Now, if you think all these netbooks don’t live up to your standards, get a regular laptop or better yet, wait about 6 months and you should see 5 times better netbooks.

Netbooks are still in the early stages and you need to consider the fact that they are “beta” products that manufacturers are still testing.  After 6-12months, we should expect more netbooks that are faster and better.
