The Best way to blog

(Above is a screenshot of typical night at my apartment me blogging. Yes if you park at the Lincoln Park golf course, make sure to wave at me and yell out “Zedomax”)

Here’s some guidelines on best ways to blogging:

  1. Wear comfortable clothes. My choice is the HULK Boxers from Wal-mart. (only $2.99) I usually don’t wear any shirts. If you must, make sure to wear a top that’s very open. (this will help your blogging creativity)
  2. Get a comfortable desk and chair. I bought everything from IKEA. They got the best cheap stuff.
  3. Beer is a must if you are serious about blogging. MGD is my favorite but I will go with a Mickey’s 40 occasionally. Try to drink about 2 to 3 beers a day. Too much or too little will kill your heart or kidney. Studies proven that little beer is good for you!
  4. Marlboro lights too if you smoke. (not that i encourage it in any way. Just say NO kids. Do as I say, don’t do as I do)
  5. Get a mouse you can get to know easily. My choice is the simple explorer from Microsoft. It clicks fast and never breaks.
  6. Yes, a plant can help you.
  7. Yes, a muscle-building book used as a mouse pad can really give you that extra umph you need for late night blogging.
  8. Yes, make sure to use Wordpress for your blog. We recommend it.

The most important part is the clothes. If you are a guy, make sure you are in your boxers. Otherwise you are inhibiting your creativity from flowing all the way.
If you are a girl, wear a bikini and make sure you get that feel for being completely free from everything.

Now if this post helped you, make sure to pingback, trackback, and all that yada yada good stuff. If you are offended, please leave your comments as we will try to rethink our blogging strategy for the future.

DIY Wordpress HACK - How to decrease the load on your Wordpress blog by 5 factors!

Posted in Blog, Cool, DoItYourself!, Hack, Web, Wordpress by max on the April 17th, 2007 at 12:00 am

Decrease Server Load

Here’s how to decrease the load on your Wordpress blog by 5 factors! (if you are running a dedicated server)I was digging today for some stuff on digg and noticed this post about Wordpress performance.

Since Zedomax runs Wordpress, I decided to take a look.

Elliott was running only one server yet he claims that he can handle 1,000,000 hits a day on one server!

FYI, Zedomax is running 3 servers now and the load was at about 0.80 to 1.0 on an average day for the HTTP server and 0.60 to 0.80 for the MYSQL server. (The other HTTP server is for the other blogs)

So through Elliott’s suggestions at changing httpd.conf, my.cnf, php.ini, and installing eAccelerator, my load on the server dropped at least 5 times!

The load for the HTTP server is now at about 0.20 for the HTTP server and 0.15 for the MYSQL server.

Bottom Line

If you run Wordpress blogs, make sure to do the suggested changes and you will definitely notice the increased speed of your website loads.

Here’s some additions to the Elliott’s HOWTO for installing eAccelerator.

When I’m trying to execute phpize, I got this:

/usr/local/php/bin/phpize: line 57: aclocal: command not found

This means you don’t have phpize installed on your Fedora. You can install the php-devel which has the phpize in it like this:

“yum install php-devel”

I got this error when I was trying to install the above:

“Check that the correct key URLs are configured for this repository”

So you gotta do this:

Edit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and replace the line

gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora

with:

gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

Then when you do “./configure”, if you get an error, you need to install some more tools. (which wasn’t documented)

So I installed Autoconf and Automake by using:

“yum install autoconf”

and

“yum install automake”

This might be basic for an experience linux-er but it took me couple hours to get it so hopefully it will help ya.

Then you can follow the rest of the directions.

Hey thanks Elliott for sharing the information with the world. I really appreciate this, you made my websites run faster! :)

Wha, wha, what about Google Pagerank Patent?

Posted in Blog, Business, Consumer, Cool, Educational, Web, Wordpress by max on the April 9th, 2007 at 3:18 am

Google Pagerank Patent

I was reading up on some new books over the weekend and came up googling some Google Pagerank Patent stuff.

There’s some interesting stuff including the Google Pagerank Algorithm on Wikipedia. Check out the Method for scoring documents in a linked database by Lawrence Page if you haven’t yet. I think this is the original document. This is got to be the sum of Computer Algorithm class at Stanford. It’s very interesting.

I remember reading somethin’ like this back in college while taking a Computer Algorithms course. Of course, that was one of my favorite computer textbooks called, “Computer Algorithms“. I highly recommended it. I bet this patent will be in future college textbooks soon…

If you check out the citations from the Method for scoring documents in a linked database patent, you will see a lot of citations to actual Computer Algorithms stuff such as Graphs employing clusters, Technique for drawing directed graphs, and Method and system of routing messages in a distributed search network to name a few. Well, I am sure this is way more complicated than just an algorithm, but then, it still breaks down to a simple algorithm in the end. (Did i say simple? Well, all algorithms should break down to 1s and 0s…)

Think about how many stuff are actually involved in making this PageRank, what a masterpiece…(wasn’t that a Master’s Project? Oh wait, it’s a Ph.D Project…too bad Tiger lost the Masters…)
Anyways, this is freakin’ great… the best part, check out this quote:

Larry Page never finished his Ph.D because of the great success of his Google search engine. It was started in 1998 and grew rapidly every year since its beginnings. Page and Brin started with their own funds, and that of their friends and family but the site quickly outgrew their own available resources. They eventually received private investments through Stanford to fund the rapid growth of up to 20% per month.

Yey, this rocks!

Spam-bot protection - Bad Behavior Plugin for Bloggers and Wikis

Posted in Blog, Web, Wordpress by max on the March 19th, 2007 at 4:48 pm

Bad Behavior Plugin for Bloggers

Here’s a cool plugin that seeks out malicious spam-bots before they even get to put a comment on your blog…  Our load on over servers were getting hectic so we had to use some type of plugin that will hopefully eliminate some of the 1000 spam comments we get everyday.

Right now it supports:

  • DotClear
  • Drupal
  • Geeklog
  • MediaWiki
  • WordPress

OnEarthTravel.com and our “other” blogs and social networking sites.

Posted in Blog, Consumer, Cool, Travel, Web, Wordpress by max on the March 17th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

OnEarthTravel

We have a new website called OnEarthTravel.com. It’s a website or a blog about travel. My girlfriend’s brother,Bodin, is running this site because he is so into travel.

It seems like we are making a new site every week. Our lives are getting busier and busier and I can’t remember last time hitting a golf ball anymore. Regardless,
we will just have to keep diggin’ along.

Make sure to check out all our other sites when you are bored:

  • Wagg.It - Blog Social Networking site
  • StinkyWorld.com -Social Networking site about collecting the stinkiest news in the world
  • BEDzine.com -Blog about beds
  • SLEEPzine.com - Blog about sleep
  • MATTRESSzine.com - Blog about mattress
  • DaBomb.tv -Blog that collects “da bomb” videos from Youtube, Google Video, Metacafe, Dailymotion, Break, you name it
  • SF Blogg - Blog about things to do in San Francisco (I’ve had no sleep so I am not really doing this blog right now, but maybe in the future when I can rest…)
  • Zedomax Korea - We just opened a new Zedomax just for the Korean audience that my friends over there are going to run.
  • Wagthis.com - An experimental social networking site we made before Wagg.It. We just gave up running it now because it’s so slow but who knows…

Well, hopefully we don’t make any more sites, otherwise we will blog 24/7.

What do we tell each other when not blogging?

Answer is simple.

“Why are you not blogging? You should be blogging!”

That’s right, we’ve gone crazy blogging our minds out we even bought some cheap tables and some nice chairs from IKEA to keep blogging.

So if you are not blogging, you should be.

Our new sweet setup at our apartment is going to be a great blogging platform. We can see Golden Gate bridge from our window here. (Well, we see some “parts” of the Golden gate bridge due to the big ass trees hanging by Lincoln Park Golf course. We will have to take some pictures and update our About page soon. (The worst thing is to live in front of a public golf course and never go play…but we do have a good reason…we are blogging.)

We are starting a Zedomax Blog Network.  If you want to join us, let us know.  The only requirement is that you have to put all of our sites on our blogroll.
We will put you on our blogrolls too on all our sites.  Oh, also your blog needs to be about a different topic than what we have.

For example, we don’t have a food blog or celebrity blog…
