EarthRace Boat completes 1 round trip around the World with 100% Biodiesel!

Check out this EarthRace Boat which runs on 100% biodiesel and is 100% carbon neutral, meaning this cool boat doesn’t excrete any CO2 or poisonous fumes to the atmosphere.

It’s been an exciting month as we’ve seen green transportation records set on the ground and in the sky, so naturally we are taking the next step and bringing you to the sea with the Earthrace, a 78 ft tri-hull “wavepiercer”. The biodiesel boat recently completed a carbon-neutral tour of the globe in an incredible 60 days and 23 hours, besting the previous world record by 14 days!

Here’s a cool DIY Arduino and Wiimote Controlled Boat all by flick of the wrist.  Now, just don’t drop that Wiimote and you will have some serious trouble getting out of the water.  (I am sure there’s a backup plan for that)

Last winter I decided version one was successful enough that I would dare to improve it. My design constraints were to extend the boats range to about 20 miles and add a second motor to balance the thrust and push the extra battery weight. In my nerdiness, I also figured it would be prudent to drive the boat with some sort of joystick, opening up the option for autopilot in the future. Lastly, I need to walk the boat to the water (0.3 miles) on a portage cart and launch and retrieve it by hand.

DIY Canoe Made out of PVC Pipe & Duct Tape!

Posted in Boats, Consumer, Cool, Design, Educational, Entertainment, Funny, Gadgets, Travel by max on the July 18th, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Canoe Made out of PVC Pipe & Duct Tape!

One of my best friends from college is a fully-redneck dude who will use duct tape for anthing that leaks.

He also told me if you duct tape anything, it’s probably redneck.

Here’s a canoe made out of PVC pipe and duct tape that’d definitely qualify as redneck boat.

I wanted a boat that would allow me to cast into the shore instead of from the shore. Being a mechanical engineer, one thing led to another and as the years passed I decided I would build a skin-on-frame kayak. The final kayak would be wood framed and fabric skinned. I searched for additional ideas and eventually made a balsa and tissue paper model of an 18 footer. Not wanting to invest more money and time than necessary in a prototype, I began thinking of a simple and quick way to test a design.

Solar Powered Boats!

Solar Powered Boats!

My dream has been always to own a medium-sized boat where I can travel the world or simply hang out with friends.  Here’s a couple solar powered boats that might be in your tight budget to help you accomplish that goal without spending millions.

Strange constructions with unwieldy glass panels are things of the past. The user can now enjoy plenty of space nor with a very modern design.
We even feature new, accessible solar cells.

World Record - 4,000 miles on a Juice Carton Boat!

Rhys Jones, a 22 year old, plans to travel 4,000 miles of water on his juice carton boat.  If he succeeds, we may see more youngsters building their boats with… plastic bottles…

The adventurer, who is the youngest person to climb the seven highest summits on each of the seven continents, plans to travel 4,000miles (6,400km) down a river on a boat made out of juice cartons.

Rhys decide to join his father and the pair, from Bartley, Hampshire, now plan to battle whirlpools, white water and alligators in their 4m (12ft) craft – a wooden cabin encased in a hull made of cartons.

They plan to set sail next weekend and may recycle the boat at the end of the trip. ‘It’s a challenge to see if it can be done,’ said Rhys. ‘It’s different and also environmentally friendly.’

1370 Horsepower Turbine Jet Boat!

Damn, this thing IS a beast! Crammed with a sizzling turbine jet, this jet boat will pollute the air like crazy yet it’s so cool!

This Turbine Jet-Boat is one fast ride. Looks like 1370 horse power is just enough for a wild water ski ride that you won’t forget.

“The T58-GE-8F turbine that is going in Squirt 2. It weighs 350 lbs and produces 1,370 hp @ 6000 rpm. That’s about 1,200lbs-ft of torque! The hull shown in the photos below is a 21ft aluminum white water race boat built by Eagle Power Boats. We have ordered a 23ft step V version of this boat for our project.
