Fonera 2.0N router maybe making some innovations far above traditional routers like ones from Linksys. The Fonera router has bunch of cool features like ability to download bitorrent files by itself using its web GUI or even turn any USB device into a WiFi device by hooking up to its USB port.

Owners who share their connections thusly get to use other Fonero’s networks when they travel. The new Fonera 2 does the same, and a whole lot more, and I have been testing it over the last few weeks. It also has one big, big problem, which makes it almost useless, for me at least.

Not bad at all for the price of $99 its being offered through the site.

I might get one to test it out real soon, although I wish the unit was a bit smaller and portable.

On the side note, I would like to know if there’s a way to hack it like my current Linksys unit that runs DD-WRT FAST.

I’ve noticed that Starbucks is actually offering 2 hours of free WiFi for becoming a Starbucks Rewards member. This is a pretty good deal if you like going to Starbucks on a daily basis. I don’t really need it because I have broadband cards plus I can tether my Palm Pre as an instant WiFi hotspot anywhere I go but for those of you on limited budget, this might be a great way to get your free internet connection.

You can also get the rewards card at the spot at your local Starbucks. Most of you probably know this but for those of you who don’t know, NOW YOU KNOW!

Okay, this blog post’s subject is on how to make a WiFi jammer.

Why in the hell would you want to do that?

Perhaps you are a professor who is holding a Final test for the quarter, the test room is filled with over 300+ people. With the invent of so many WiFi devices, you can never be sure how many students might actually be cheating using a WiFi device to look on Google for test questions and answers. Now, if you had a WiFi jammer to prevent WiFi connections during the test, you have solved at least one of the problems. (And yes, broadband connection is a whole another issue.)

The point is, a WiFi jammer may be useful especially if you can block a specified area, you can also use it as a wifi security perimeter. (This might be good for government locations where they need to jam WiFi in certain areas they don’t want they WiFi leaked.) I know for a fact large organizations/companies don’t even use WiFi because of security but if there was a way to control where WiFi existed using a wifi jammer, this wifi jammer could be very, very useful.

Anyways, I don’t know how to do it but I have found a video that shows you that it can be done.

Office DIY Ideas – How to Turn Office Junk into Useful Gadgets!

Few things on this earth become as cluttered, dirty and full of mysteries as the desks where we work all day. From shriveled lettuce fragments from a 2005 sandwich still stuck between the keys, to a curious 5” floppy disk full of unknown data that has been rolled over by the chair wheels a dozen times, there are all sorts of things buried within and around our workspaces. This is particularly true for most who work from home – as the desk constantly serves not only as a place for getting work done, but often as a table, shelf, pantry, and sometimes, a bed.

Every now and then, people bother to actually clean out their desks and get rid of all the miscellaneous bits of computer parts and office supplies for which they have absolutely no use. Massive trash bags, big enough for Dexter Morgan to fill with a dismembered 32 year-old man, get filled to the brim with random work-related bits of forgotten importance. But why junk all that stuff? There are a bunch of things you can do with all those pieces-parts – and this article aims to provide you with a few ideas. And no, I wouldn’t suggest re-shingling your roof with plastic jewel cases and gelatinous bottles of White Out. Come on, you at least have a little bit of class.

CDs

CDs may be the most common throw-away item. Everyone has a spindle worth of discs they forgot to label, discs that burned improperly, or a drawer full of leftover AOL free trials they got in the mail once a week from 1997-2001. Here are some technical, geeky, crafty, practical and stupid things to do with old CDs or DVDs:

Detach large Christmas lights (the old school fat ones like your grandpa still uses) from their string, put on the CD, and then reattach the light. It makes a neat glowing/reflecting effect.
Trace a guitar pick onto a CD and cut it out. Brand new guitar pick.
String a few together and hang it outside for a quality hillbilly prism ornament.
Stick them on fence posts to scare away birds from your garden – they hate the reflection.
There’s always the good old coaster and Frisbee options.
If they have printed labels on one side, cut them up and make a mosaic.
Smash your mosaic, and glue the pieces to a Styrofoam ball. Disco away.
Practice your ninja skills by throwing them like a shuriken at friends and family members.
They make pretty cool candle coasters.
Install a clock mechanism in the center hole, Sharpie on some numbers and you’ve got a sweet nerd clock.
Use your nerd clock to gauge when your frozen pizza is done baking, and then cut the pie with a disc edge.

Floppy & Zip Disks

No doubt you’ve got a few floppies still lying around, too. If you don’t, I have plenty, and you can have them. You could back up your hard drive or something, 1.4MB at a time, if you wanted to. The Zip disk could still be mildly useful, if only any computer on earth actually had a Zip drive…

Tile the floor in a small room with them, you nerd.
Go to this site and learn how to make a bag/purse/man sack out of floppies (http://www.instructables.com/id/Floppy-Disk-Bag/) – Just don’t give it to your mom for mother’s day.
Pop out the little metal circle part from the middle of a bunch of disks, string some cord through it (or some SATA cable if you want to be super geeky) and make a belt. Or a necklace. Or a noose.
Zip disks make great props for under the leg of that wobbly chair or table.
Fashion a bunch of them together to make a square box – you can put pencils in it! Hey, it’ll help with the clutter. We’re cleaning here, after all.
Same concept as above – but make a photo cube.
Use them to scratch food out of a casserole dish. It works. I swear.
If you have a 5” floppy, use it as a mount for some sort of art project.
Make a bracelet out of the insides of a 5” disk. Then, down a bottle of Hello Kitty pills and head to a rave in the most dilapidated building you can find.

Laptops

Aside from taking old laptops to sit on and keep the chilly bleacher metal off your bum at your son’s tee ball game, there are a handful of things you can do with them that are less ridiculous.

Make a DIY digital photo frame. Start by taking the LCD off of the rest of the laptop (which usually only requires removing one ribbon cable). Remove the plastic around the LCD, assemble a mounting board and mat around it, then glue it on. Reattach the cable to the rest of the laptop. Attach something to make a stand. If you have a screensaver program that links to Flickr or some other photo source, it’s all that much easier because you never really have to touch the thing. It’s boss.
Screw with it. Replace the case with a wooden one. Do something silly.
If it’s not a total pile, turn it into a file server. It costs less to power all day than a desktop.
Turn it into a hotspot and boost your router signal. The method depends on your OS, so look it up yourself.
Put some wheels on it and use it as a skateboard. Wear pads, you’ll get hurt.
Create a DIY hobo digital projector. Get the screen, a cooling fan, and an old style overhead projector. Check the bottom corner of the supply closet for one of those, behind the mop and Janet from accounting’s underwear. Strip down the LCD until you’re left with just the screen itself (just the black sheet and its attached VGA/DVI components). Lay it on the glass top of the overhead projector. Attach it however you need to along with the cooling fan. Connect the inputs to a video source, and you’ll have a big, digital-ish projection.
Use it as a second monitor.
Put it on your stove top and use it as a skillet to fry an egg. Only if it has a metal shell, though. I mean, you can melt it everywhere if you want…

Printers

Okay fine, there is only one suggestion for printers…

Hollow it out and plant flowers in it. They become excellent planters, especially the all-in-ones.

Pencils

Make a little fence for your plants in your printer planter box. Or in an actual planter box.
Glue a bunch together side-by-side and make a placemat or trivet.
Apparently moths hate pencil shavings. Grind them all up and put them in your closet. They will work like moth balls – but with a different, less offensive, but still unappealing odor.
Support a small plant.
The graphite in a pencil is a dry lubricant, so if you have a small motor, lock, latch, or other mechanical object that is stuck, rub the graphite all over it to loosen it up.

Other Crap

Clean out the junk in your keyboard cracks with the sticky end of a Post-It.
Use Post-Its as cable wraps for all the cords under the desk.
Be one of those creepy old people in a dark room full of decaying Asian home furnishings and antique radios that hordes every piece of garbage they’ve ever possessed.
Repeatedly stick and remove any form of tape to a laptop keyboard that has hand soil marks. It will slowly lift them without you scratching away at your hardware. (That’s what she said!)
Insulate something with mouse pads.
You can tie up just about anything with a computer cable.

Use paper clips as Christmas ornament hooks, or as a zipper pull. Then go out to dinner at a fancy restaurant. Pop your collar while you’re at it.
Large pencil erasers are great door stops.
An old mouse or crappy computer speaker makes a good key hider.
An old iPod makes a swell cigarette case.
The circuit sheet from a keyboard can make a very snazzy wallet.
You can melt old crayons and make nice art that will look much like oil painting. Touch to flame, dab on paper. Touch to flame, dab on paper. Touch to flame, dab on paper. Touch to flame, dab on paper. Touch to flame…

Clearly you can find a use for anything if you try to. It’s certainly easier to throw everything away, but when you can have mildly tacky things all over the place that you created with would-be trash, people just may think you are the most clever Jenny on the block. You may even be able to fashion yourself something useful, which is the true spirit of DIY. Though most of the ideas on this list were small, they are all feasible. Try some out, put your innovative mind to work and see if you can’t transform some of that desk clutter into a more creative form of clutter.

Palm Pre has been literally “awesome” in the last couple days that I’ve had it.

I love this new touchscreen phone so much that I even registered a domain name for it called PalmPre-Hacks.com on the night I bought the Palm Pre.

Well, it turns out that my $199 investment on the Palm Pre has paid off already as I have figured out how to make it into a wireless router already.

It wasn’t easy because a lot of the instructions were not easy to find but I did find a good Palm Pre app called My Tether that can turn your phone into a WiFi router. (Yes, you can connect your laptop, iPod, or any other wireless device simultaneously!)

The greatest part about the Palm Pre is that it’s linux-based, it’s a linux computer in essence. There’s literally millions of linux experts out there who are developing apps with ease and I think there’s way more potential for the Palm Pre down the road.

Okay, call me crazy but it’s a Sunday and 4AM right now, I am just so excited that I got my Palm Pre to be a WiFi router!!!

Being too excited, I decided to launch the PalmPre-Hacks.com blog early as possible so the very first blog post is a detailed step-by-step guide to making your Palm Pre into a WiFi router.

Hahaha, here’s an interesting blog post I started to write and forgot about it for couple weeks: (It’s a wonder what a difference a week makes you feel about things. Just take it slow.)

LMAO Oscar Saved My Ass From AT&T Call Centers!

The most interesting thing came about today, I called AT&T THREE TIMES and navigated through their menus to reach call center in India once, then another woman over in the States, then to Oscar solved my problems of not being able to recover my registration info for the new router.

Seriously, I called AT&T 3 TIMES before someone helped me solved my problems of not being able to connect to the internet. Can you believe it? Me without internet? Okay, maybe I am streching here but every human being in the world deserves a good internet connection whether satellite, internet, or cellular.

If Oscar didn’t help me, I would have had to wait 3 MORE DAYS! The other 2 people were telling me some bs like I need to fax them my driver’s license card to verify that it’s real me….go figure. Oscar simply asked me couple security questions and we skipped THREE WHOLE DAYS! Okay, call me crazy but I like to get things done in 5 minutes.

Well, at least I get the last laugh on AT&T, they really need to hire smarter people like Oscar so I don’t have to call 3 times to get my wifi up and running. Think about how much money they are actually “wasting” by having the customer call 3 times for the same problem.

Actually, I realized that there’s a way around those call centers. You just gotta keep calling again until you get someone friendly on the phone who’s willing to help you.

As soon as that person is not being friendly or simply taking too long, just hang up and dial again as those call centers have thousands of other people who can help you.

Just think of it this way, depending on you luck, you could be talking to the worst customer service person or best, just hang up the phone and call again if you happen to talk to the worst.

Anyways, that’s my 2 cents on how to deal with call centers, JUST KEEP CALLING THEM until you find someone you can solve your problems and don’t whine to people who don’t care about you anyways.

Wireless DIY – How to Set Up WPA2 Network!

For those of you wireless tinkers who need the best in wifi security, ComputerWorld has a great guide on how to set up WPA2 network. I think this is a great way to “secure” your wifi network, especially since it’s already been proven even WPA can be cracked easily. – link

Step 1: Windows OS: First make sure your operating system is up to date. If you are running Windows XP, you’ll need service pack 2 and you’ll need to download the WPA2 patch that’s located here.

If you’re using a Mac, you need to be running OS X 10.4.2 or better. Apple calls its version WPA2 Personal. While Linux is outside the scope of this article, you can get more information here.

Step 2: Wireless Adapter: While you are updating your Windows OS, you might want to make sure that the wireless adapter in your laptop is also up to the task of supporting WPA2. The Wi-Fi Alliance maintains an online database of products that is somewhat difficult to use. Go to their Web site, check the WPA2 box and then select which vendor you are interested in.

If you have a built-in Intel wireless adapter, it needs to be running Intel’s ProSet version 7.1.4 or better, excluding versions 8.x. You can get more information on this page on Intel’s Web site.

Step 3: Wireless access point/router: Next, make sure your router/gateway can support WPA2. If you have purchased it in the last year, chances are good that it does, but you might need to update your firmware as well. For the Belkin Pre-N router model 2000, I needed to update the firmware to version 2.01. An older model 1000 didn’t support WPA2 and couldn’t be upgraded. How can you tell the difference when you are buying one? You can’t, other than opening the box and looking at the label on the bottom of the unit.

Bixi is the bike sharing scheme that uses technology to keep track of the bikes, they have a computer chip on board, are solar powered and of course are Wi-Fi enabled, although they are an average looking bike the shape and colour means that it would hard to steal one of these bikes and get away with it.

The bikes are fitted with LED lights to the front and rear, these save power but have been found to be brighter than a conventional bike light. Montreal is the first city to get this scheme where will it pop up next?

Sprint will be rolling out their new EV-DO router where you can make any location a Wi-Fi hotspot. Now, this still will be very slow since EV-DO is barely fast enough for one computer.

However, there is advantage where the router can be “placed” on your roof to ensure EV-DO coverage even in remote locations like in the mountain. I am sure you’ve had similar experiences where your broadband USB simply doesn’t cut it.

My recommendation is hold onto your money for right now in this hard economy and keep waiting for Wi-MAX, which will be at least 10 times faster than EV-DO.

WiMax/WiBro Routers Available in South Korea!

While Sprint is still trying to get WiMax up and running in America by year 2010, (that’s the year it should be available in every city in the US, according to a Sprint rep I talked to last week) South Koreans have been enjoying it for the last couple years and now they have a WiBro router that instantly turns any location into a WiFi hotspot with fast upload/download speeds than you can imagine.

Of course, you can pick one up in South Korea (and use it in South Korea only) but I can’t wait till Sprint gets their act together so I can get one here too.

WiBro, a local variant of mobile WiMAX, provides faster data rates than third-generation (3G) services, with download speeds of around 37 megabytes per second and upload speeds of 8 megabytes per second.

However, in one of the world’s most wired nations, WiBro has struggled to gain traction. KT has spent more than 730 billion won on its WiBro business since its commercial launch in 2006, but has little to show for it. SK Telecom, the mobile telephony king and the country’s other WiBro operator, has it even worse.

Verizon Hub Review, Is It Really Necessary?

Verizon is trying to market the new “home” communication center unit, the Verizon Hub. Basically it’s a netbook, sorta, packed with broadband modem and ability to surf online plus many other features.

I think this is a really GREAT idea except it’s too far ahead of its time. You have to be at the RIGHT TIME at the RIGHT PLACE and Verizon might be doing well in 2010 but I simply don’t see this taking off anytime this year, especially since this is the first version. Of course, Apple-like marketing could deceptively please people but don’t go there Verizon, we will be there to put the stake through your heart.

Should you get one? Yes, if you have money to throw down the toilet, it’s an exaggerated digital photo frame at the very best, even the PC Magazine editors rated 2.5 out of 5, which means it’s simply not there yet.

When not in use for communication, the Hub becomes a digital photo frame, capable of cycling through images as a slideshow, or as a screen saver after 5, 10, or 30 minutes of inactivity. You can send images to the frame from a Verizon Wireless phone as a picture message, or upload up to 200 at a time through the Hub Web site. Images are rescaled and compressed, but are not resized to fill the display.

When I first booted my Hub, there were already over a dozen updates ready to be installed, with the Internet radio widget included in the batch. Verizon says future updates may bring a Web browser and improved integration among mobile devices and Web-based services, as well as additional Internet radio stations. The device includes a pair of USB 2.0 ports, but currently, they can be used only for charging compatible devices such as cell phones or MP3 players. Additional functionality may be included in a future update.

If you want to automate image uploading or simply want to hack it, refer to this guy’s hack where he shows you how to hack the Eye-Fi wireless SD card.

Jeff Tchang did all the hard work and put together a handy python script that acts as a server for using an EyeFiCard on anything that’ll run python.
I added some sloppy code to make it upload the files it acquires to Gallery2 via a python based G2 client called gup.
I also moved the config line needed for the uploadkey towards the top of the file.

For those of you looking to hack your wireless digital frames, here’s a great guide on how to build your own custom web interface. The hack uses PHP and MySQL so it shouldn’t be a surprise for most of you web developers out there. This is a great way to make more usage out of the wireless digital frame than showing pictures and videos.

As soon as you enter the needed data like ssid and password (yes, he can do wep and wpa/2 !), the frame connects to your wifi and gets his IP via dhcp.
With the web-interface (http://IP_OF_FRAME:5050) you can control the i-net-functions of the frame:
Either it gets his images from windows-live-space (whatever this is), or it parses feeds and regular html-pages and gehts the images for you. Alas, it refuses to parse php-pages.

Cheap Wireless Printers Review!

Okay, today we will review some of the cheapest wireless printers you can buy. Since we most people have Wi-Fi these days, I don’t see why not you should go with a wired printer when most wireless printers are under $150.

Anyways, without delay, I will be featuring some of the cheap, (or low-cost) wireless printers you can buy. (online of course, it’s cheaper than retail)

First up is a Brother MFC-490CW, it features Wireless G or ethernet connection with ability to fax/scan 15 pages at a time. One of the most important things I look for when buying an office equipment is that it’s multi-purpose, able to scan/fax multiple documents automatically.

Frankly, I have used Brother multi-function printer/scanners before and they are pretty good and don’t break down too easily over the years.

At $74.95 from Amazon, I don’t see how you can go wrong with this wireless printer, definitely recommended.

Other than that, it features a wireless-G connection plus ability to scan and copy while faxing capabilities are not there. If you don’t need a fax but you need to print out high-resolution photos once in awhile, this might be a better fit for you than the Brother MFC-490CW.

Priced at $102 at Amazon (at the time of this blog post), it’s still a steal over retail.

At $219.95, I find the Canon a little more pricey over the Brother and HP so if you need the ultimate photo prints for your money, this is the choice.

Brother is great too if it’s for your small business.

I am still a little hesistant about the Canon because they have not been in the printer business for as long as the others so…

Obama’s new ride may be one of the better-equipped White House has ever made.

In short, it features basically armor-grade parts that will pretty much protect the car even if you bazookaed it or shot machine guns at it.

What I like most about it are the in-car Wifi and Satellite phone, something I would find very useful if I had my own chauffeur.

The only thing that sucks about it is the fact that its top speed is 60mph(must be an error) and the 15 second from 0 to 60mph. (If I were the President, I’d make sure the vehicles goes at least 150mph and under 7 seconds from 0 to 60mph.

Well, I am pretty sure this isn’t everything that’s on the car, they must have at least put some missiles that can shoot at the behind and automated machine guns that pop out from the roof. I hope we don’t have to find out.

60Ghz Wireless Chip In the Works for Gigabit Speeds!

If you thought your 50Mbps Wi-Fi at home or office was fast, think again as researchers from Georgia Tech have developed a teeny, bitty wireless chip that operates in the 60Ghz range while providing speeds up to 15Gbps at close range. Now, that’s about 15000/50 = 300 times faster than 50Mbps at full blast.

The technology should be an ISO standard by end of this year and that means it will probably take another 2-3 years before we see it as a consumer product but heck, this is a lot better than our current Wi-Fi, I am not complaining.

The single-chip component integrates a low-power radio with an embedded antenna, while drawing only 100 milliwatts of power. GEDC researchers have experimented with a variety of configurations, reaching speeds up to 15 Gbps at one meter, 10 Gbps at two meters, and 5 Gbps at five meters. Tests also successfully streamed uncompressed 720p or 1080i video.

Ecma International recently announced a global standard for the 60 GHz RF technology, with the full specifications expected to be published as an ISO standard sometime this year.

Uh oh, can we impeach Bush before Obama officially becomes President?

In another nod to his alleged “free-market” principles, President Bush has expressed disapproval of the free nationwide Wi-Fi proposal being considered by the FCC and Congress.

It’s an inauspicious time to decry helpful, even vital democratic initiatives in favor of ideology — after all, many of our most outspoken critics of federal mandate and regulation have ended up looking dogmatic, shortsighted or downright ignorant of late.

But that hasn’t stopped the Bush team from making its anti-populist agenda known. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez issued an open letter to the FCC this week, stating the administration’s argument against legislation that could lead to nationwide no-fee wireless Internet. The administration hopes to influence FCC Chairman Kevin Martin to overturn the proposal during the FCC’s next scheduled meeting on December 18th.

Delta is finalizing their decision on offering full in-flight wi-fi for everyone on dometic flights by middle of next year. Go Delta! Now, I can travel and get some blogging done while flying. THAT is cool.

ATLANTA — Delta Air Lines Inc. said Tuesday that it would offer broadband wireless Internet access on its entire domestic mainline fleet by the middle of next year.

The airline said Wi-Fi service would be offered for a fee to customers traveling throughout the continental United States.

Delta is partnering with Aircell, an airborne communications provider, to install the network on Delta’s domestic fleet of more than 330 aircraft.

The system will allow Delta customers traveling with Wi-Fi enabled devices — like laptops, smartphones and hand-held devices — to access the Internet while in flight.

A flat fee of $9.95 will be charged on flights of three hours or less, and $12.95 on flights of more than three hours.

DIY – How to Make a Conetenna WiFi Antenna that goes 18Mb at 300 yards!

Well, here’s a wifi antenna you can make that can do 18MB at 300 yards.

Now here’s a way to get some free wifi from your neighborhood, that is if you live in a metropolitan area AND you have a window to high-rise apartments.

This antenna performs better than the dish antenna I had built, so I’m happy with it. And maybe the world is a better place now that I’m not weilding a truly Buck Rodgers death-ray of an antenna!

From 50 yards, I’m almost getting a full strength signal. And at the shooting range I’m getting an 18 Mb connection from 300 yards. But the side-lobes are huge! The signal strength meter starts to drop at around 30 degrees to either side of the antenna. Good to find a signal quickly, but I want more focus.

Now that this is what I built, I’m thinking about building a 5-gallon bucket antenna. If I can put the wave-guide inside of the cone, make the cone bigger, who knows?

Here’s a cool little hack that let’s you get free wifi from Starbucks or AT&T Hotspots!

Basically, you change the “User-Agent” to iPhone User Agent, which is the header part of HTTP transmission.

Then you put in the phone number of any of your friends’ iPhone. I personally know about 3 people in my cellphone address book, so this should be piece of cake.

For Firefox, you can download User Agent Switcher Plugin to change the User Agent.

Definitely, this is the easiest hack I’ve seen so far for cracking Wifi hotspots.

Here’s how to do it on a MAC:

1. Open Safari while connected to a AT&T wifi
2. Enter the Preferences, select the Advanced tab, and then select Show the Develop menu in the menu bar
3. From the Develop menu select User Agent
4. Select the iPhone User-Agent
5. The page will reload and ask for a geniune iPhone number. Everybody has a friend with an iPhone, right?
