HD Hack – How to Render Full 1080P or 720P in Sony Vegas Pro 9 Without Freezing or Large Filesize!

While trying to render some of my new videos for upload on YouTube with Sony Vegas Pro 9, I encountered a problem where the rendering process would crawl to a stop after 1% or simply freeze. Well, I found a quick solution around it, that is to render it in MP4 instead of AVI.

This works really well btw, now I can do a 20 minute 1080P video rendering in about 5 minutes.

Use the above screenshot settings and change the frame size to 1920×1024 pixels for 1080P. You can also try the above settings for 720P, which should be pretty good also.

Btw, my first short film with Canon 7D is almost done uploading!

I just found this cool netbook/nettop hack on how to make your HD videos play flawlessly on Amazon, this might work well for my Eee PC as my Youtube videos lag badly.

Can be frustrating, but there is a solution:

> Deactivate deblocking filter on all the codecs that support it (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC)

How ?

Install klite codec pack, and at the end of the setup, choose deactivate deblocking.

If you use build-in codecs player programs such GOMPlayer, there are options for quit deblocking filters.

This way you can play even 720p hardly encoded videos, you will see some blocks here and there, but no frame skipping or audio cuts.

Alternately, if you need more performance, you can choose 16bit of color depth.

You’ve probably noticed that YouTube has been putting 30-second ads randomly before videos start. Well, there’s a really simple hack that lets you skip the 30-second ad. Simply, reload the site. The 30-second ads only appear randomly, meaning if you open new YouTube videos or simply re-open them, you won’t see them.

Well, I hope that lets you watch YouTube videos faster. As for me, I need to skip the ads so I can find new “how to” videos I can blog about.

Well, I have been doing a lot of fiddling with my new smartphone Palm Pre.

Since I don’t like reading instructions when I do things and try to figure things out myself, I didn’t even realize the full potential of the Palm Pre on my first day.

I decided to swallow my DIY-ego and read the instructions today. Well, it turns out there’s more apps on the Palm Pre than I imagined after learning that apps also exists laterally, not just horizontally.

Anyways, here’s a quick video explaining how to use Palm Pre’s basic touch functions and gestures:

Here’s a quick roundup of how to use the Palm Pre:

Press the Launcher button (the arrow on the bottom right) to launch any apps you’d like. When you are browsing the apps, you can gesture up, down, right, or left to see additional apps. My first day I didn’t know apps existed on the right and didn’t use 75% of the apps so… don’t do that.
The power button on the upper-right hand corner of your Palm Pre can be used to put your phone in sleep mode or wake from it by pressing it once. You can also hold on to the power button and turn the Ringer button ON/OFF 3 times to reset your phone.
Press the center button to see “bird’s eye view” of the apps. For example, you want to switch to your GMail while browsing the Web, you can press the center button to switch to another app.
To close an app, simply press the center button, then drag your app up and out of the screen.
To go back to previous page/action, simply gesture from right-bottom to the center button. This one is really useful or the most useful touch gesture on the Palm Pre as you can use it for going back a page on the Web browser or anytime you want to go “back” one step. This is probably the function that is most useful over an iPhone as you don’t have to worry about the back button and whatnot.
Tap the top-right battery icon to check your Palm Pre’s battery level, connect to a WiFi hotspot, turn ON/OFF bluetooth, or put the phone on “Airplane Mode”.

Improvements are:
The rotation speed is 25/s instead of 7/s like in the earlier version, thanks to a cooling fan motor, which can give about 10W power and enough torque at 1800rpm. Also the power supplying is changed for the rotating part. It gets negative through the axe, positive through a sliding contact. The rotation speed is monitored, so the image does not collapse when it decreeses.

Best Earbud Review – Sony MDR-Ex75 Hands-On Review!

Honestly, I have to admit I don’t give hands-on review of every cool gadget since I physically can’t try EVERYTHING. (well, maybe in the future)

But for earbuds, I have tried many different brands and I know which one gives you bang for your dollar.

The perfect earbud that I am looking for and have found will not break easily and provide high quality treble and bass for my listening pleasures, even when I am going to sleep.

You might remember the post I did on Best Earbud Review couple months back, which features this very Sony MDR-EX75 earbuds.

I have been using these for the last 3 months or so (I upgraded myself from the MDR-EX55) and I have to say these earbuds are simply perfect.

Why?

First, the earbuds come with 2 pieces of cords, one short cord and the other extension. The extension cord makes the earbuds awesome because it’s a lot more pull-proof, especially when you are active like me and play sports while wearing your earbuds.

In essence, by having 2 cords, you will never run into your earbud internal lines breaking from pulling too much, the cords will simply separate before that can happen.

I don’t know why every earbud manufacturer is not doing this but I suspect the reason is that the manufacturers want you to break the earbuds and buy new ones.

Needless to say, I’ve spent easily $300 in the last year on earbuds alone, ALL of them broke because they were 1-corded, there was no point of breakage.

Compare it to a fuse box, if you don’t have a fuse box, your home electricity could just burn down and you might need thousands of dollars to fix that. But the fuse box protects from exactly that.

That’s what I am telling you, having the extension cord on an earbud protects it from those accidental tuggings on your earbud lines.

On top of this awesome protective feature which is the most common failure point in earbuds, the Sony MDR-EX75 earbuds are under $40 AND provides really good treble and bass.

Also read up on my Apple feedback of the Apple In-ear Headphones, which are crap and costs over $100!!!

Well, I don’t work for Sony, but these are simply the best earbuds I have ever tried. I even wear them when running on my manual treadmill.

Now, don’t get jealous, you can get your own for $34.99 on Amazon. (Get it on Amazon as they sell this model while BestBuy is still selling the older, outdated model MDR-55EX.

Golf DIY – How to Hit the Ball Straighter with Nike SQ Dymo STR8-FIT Driver!

As you well know if you’ve read my profile on our About page, my real skills in life lie with golf clubs.

Recently, I had the pleasure of doing a comparison of the new Nike SQ Dymo STR8-FIT driver and the TaylorMade R9 driver. Although I have been using a Titleist 983K driver for most of last 10 or so years, I am much surprised by the golf driver technology that allows people to hit straighter drives without changing their swings.

Anyways, the Nike SQ DYMO STR8-FIT was the better choice in the testing due to the fact that the new Nike SQ DYMO STR8-FIT driver can help you hit the ball straighter and farther.

One thing I look for in a new driver is its ability to square the clubface nearing impact. When your club can do this, it’s doing most of the work for you, helping you to hit the ball square in the sweet spot. Once you can do that consistently, your ball will ultimately go farther.

So, you see, there’s a direct correlation between how long you can hit the ball and how consistently you can hit the sweetspot.

As for distance, I have to say the Nike outperformed the TaylorMade as even my mishits with the Nike have gone 290 yards while the TaylorMade mishits were more in the range of 270 yards with wild hooks here and there.

One of things I want to actually emphasize here is not the club’s ability to adjust to different lies and trajectories but the clubhead itself is solid. Having a solid clubhead allows you to hit the ball straighter and with more “overspin”, allowing your ball to roll further and better control under windy conditions.

Let me tell you a story of how I started riding motorcycles.

The very first time was at my best friend’s house up in Humbolt, California where he had a dirt-bike. Well, to cap the story short, I didn’t know how to ride, didn’t have a helmet on, ultimately did a superman and sorta chipped a part of my leg bones after flipping over about 3 times on the ground.

As ugly as that experience sounds, I got the courage to actually BUY a motorcycle couple years later in South Korea, where I was staying. The traffic was so bad, the only way to get around the city fast was with a motorcycle.

Now as weird as that sounds, I sorta had the idea of how to ride a motorcycle but didn’t really know and I just BOUGHT a bike!!! So, after BUYING the bike, I ask the bike shop merchant on how to ride a motorcycle.

I did couple practice runs around the red-light district (it was red-light district where I bought the bike), then headed over a big bridge and drove home. That was the scariest part of my life, riding a brand new motorcycle on the road, not knowing how to ride one and knowing I have wrecked on a friend’s dirt-bike.

Gladly, I haven’t done any superman and I have actually “survived” the brutal traffic in Seoul, Korea for 1 year. Trust me, driving in city traffic really helps you to not kill yourself on a motorcycle.

When I got back to the States, I took the motorcycle course and passed. (also learned couple more tricks)

If you are thinking about getting a bike too, here’s a couple tips I can tell you that has save my life over and over:

1. No matter what, keep your eyes on the road. Once your eyes are not, that’s when you put your life in risk.

2. Learn to use the front and back brakes. I’ve had about a dozen times where my brakes have saved me from crashing big.

3. Look where you want to go. One time, I was going too fast in a corner and almost hit the guard rail. Luckily, I barely got through the corner by looking where I wanted to go.

4. Learn to use your gears to slow down. You can easily brake without even using your brakes on a motorcycle by downshifting rapidly. This will help you avoid accidents by being able to stop quickly coupled with the front and rear brakes.

5. For first timers, I would highly suggest to buy a used bike with less horsepower. The chances are you are going to drop your bike the first time you ride, that better be a used bike, not your new $10,000 bike.

And here’s some more basic tips on mechanics of riding a bike:

1. Hold down your clutch (which is the lever on the left) then hit the start button to start the motorcycle.

2. Slowly engage your throttle (which is the handle on the right) while slowing releasing your clutch. This is something you need to practice a lot to get the feel for. If you drive a manual-transmission equipped car, you can get the idea.

3. You can always brake by pulling on your clutch, then hitting the front brakes (which is lever on the right) and also hitting the back brakes. (your right foot)

4. Learn to slowly accelerate into the corner. You always “accelerate” into a corner, that’s how the motorcycle stays balanced. Master this and you can go really fast around the corners.

P.S. Lastly, riding a motorcycle can be safe only if you take pre-cautions. I know a lot of people who hurt themselves by trying too many things starting out. Just take it slow, it’s your life on the line when you ride a motorcycle, it’s LIFE and DEATH!!!

After having months of using my Aiptek 1080P HD camera, I’ve decided that I finally had enough of the bad microphone, bad zoom, MOV files only, and bad night filming so I bought the Flip Mino HD. (Btw, Aiptek and MinoHD are about the same prices, highly recommend MinoHD over Aiptek, don’t waste your money on Aiptek, it sucks!)

This Flip Mino HD camcorder is probably the best portable HD camcorder for your money. Not only is Flip Mino HD about the size of your cellphone, it practically does everything it needs to, including recording crisp 720P HD videos.

Here’s some of the highlights of the Flip Mino HD camcorder:

The internal microphone Flip Mino HD is really exceptional, it will record everything in crisp and clear sound.
Flip Mino HD will perform under very dark conditions, even in complete darkness as evidenced by the video I took with it below.
Smooth zoom in and out allows you to make very good transitions in your video.

Here’s an awesome DIY RGB LED Color Table that will knock the socks off your shoes. Check out the videos at the bottom where you can watch the RGB table go nuts with equalizers. Hmmm… I wonder if he can turn it into a Tetris game, “that” would be awesome.

My name is Edo, I am a 23 years old from Hamburg Germany and I’m studying computer science at the Hamburg university of applied science. I used one Arduino Duemilinove to control 12 TLC5940 Chips. There is is one 5mm RGB LED in each of the 64 sections. The dimensions of the Table are 50×50×12 centimeters The cladding is made of self brushed aluminum. In the future I’d like to take an Arduino BT to program the table wirelessly.

For those of you circuit hackers and servo-addicts, you might be happy to learn that there’s a way to make your own servo plotter.

For this project, we wanted to build a lower cost, lower precision XY table for an installation at TeleToyland. The goal is to allow web users to draw shapes in a sand box, so we wanted a simple XY table that is easy to control from a web application. Since we already have the Web to Hobby Servo connection working well for other installations, using a hobby servo was the desired approach. Most homebrew CNC XY tables use motors like steppers and acme screw drives, but we don’t need that much precision, and they are a bit slower than we’d like.

If you were pyro-inclined like me back in middle school, you might have read “Poor Man’s James Bond” and tried making bunch of smoke bombs and whatnot. Of course, nowdays you might want to be careful as people might mistaken you for a terrorist but heck, smoke bombs have always been pretty harmless, I don’t see why you shouldn’t make some.

About.com has a good detailed DIY on how to make a smoke bomb with the following ingredients:

Smoke Bomb Materials

sugar (sucrose or table sugar)

potassium nitrate, KNO₃, also known as saltpeter (buy it online or you can find this at some garden supply stores in the fertilizer section, some pharmacies carry it too)

skillet or pan

aluminum foil

I remember buying whole bunch of this stuff and made so much smoke bombs. I felt like I was batman, able to fire off smoke bombs whenever I wanted to disappear in a hurry.

Here’s a good video on how to make your own simple hydrogen generator. This might be a great auto project for you to tinker with.

Green Power Science has made a simple DIY Hydrogen Generator. The thought was that it would be run from the alternator in your car and the Hydrogen would be pumped into the engine for combustion. I am no expert but I think the energy used to create the gas would be much greater than the energy that would be produced when burning the gas. What would be interesting though is to have a large scale hydrogen generator in your garage running from solar energy and a means of using it in your car.

Well, if you are a Wii fanatic, you will want to hear this, you can now use DriveKey to hack any stubborn Wii that couldn’t be hacked previously:

we are proud to introduce you to the world first mod chip for the Wii D3 DVD drives the Wii DriveKey mod chip, this device will allow you to play your backups and games from other regions the same as you would with a chipped machine but uses no wires at all and is 100% solderless solution which is compatible with all Wii DVD drives including the latest D3 drive which so far there are no other solutions on the market. For those who don’t know yet the latest drive revision which was found in the AU market in Dec called the GC2-D3 also nick named d2nothing is a totally new design and they have removed the little controller chip found on all previous drives, this controller chip was how the old chips were able to work. So with no controller chip there is no way to use traditional chips such as the WiiKey with these D3 drives, this is where the DriveKey comes in and offers people with the D3 drive a valid option for them to be able to play their legitimate backups or games from other regions.

Positives:

DriveKey acts as a simple passthrough for the DVD connector cable, tweaking certain functions to allow for a bit more freedom in your Wii experience.

Negatives:

Unfortunately, DriveKey limits the DVD drive to 2x read speeds, which might make certain games unplayable, and it also can’t be flash upgraded,…

I have to admit that I have been guilty of watching my dad play the drums on occasions (he bought a whole REAL drum set and takes lessons too) and I myself bought (not drum set) but drum sticks so I can practice in my kitchen while I cook.

Anyways, there’s a bunch of great free sources on how to play the drums, one site I found very helpful was Jared Falk’s FreeDrumLessons.com. (You can check out his YouTube channel here.)

In the spirit of the Holiday season, GE showcases its OLED technology in a relevant fashion. The engineers and scientists in GE’s OLED research team built a Christmas tree out of OLED panels. I can’t think of a better way to showcase the technology in a rather unorthodox and tongue-in-cheek method at this point in time than this. “We haven’t quite achieved Rockefeller or National Christmas tree lighting status yet, but we’re well on our way,” says the leader of GE’s OLED program, Anil Duggal. OLEDs are, of course, a new type of lighting more efficient than current types of lighting available.

Simply add &fmt=18 to the end of your video link, here’s an example:

Saving high quality YouTube videos:
When you’re viewing a high quality video on YouTube, you can use the KeepVid bookmarklet to download the mp4 file for later viewing on your computer, iPod, or iPhone. I tested this with the Burn-E video and the resulting mp4 was in letterbox format (480×198, or roughly the standard 2.40:1 aspect ratio).

Here’s a really cool NES Hack that involves installing an alarm clock inside the SNES. Of course, you can even use the joystick to set the time, which gets double-whammy thumbs up.

Our story begins with the gutting of the SNES and the desoldering of the cartridge connector and reset switch from the mainboard. To my great surprise and greater fortune, the cartridge connector’s pins were precisely the same pitch as the through-holes for the display ribbon on the alarm clock, and on top of that, the display required 23 connections, which is exactly the size of one side of the middle part of the connector. Display out, cartridge connector in, very smooth. A little dremel work, and a nice shrouded polarized 2-prong AC connector, which I happened to have a cable for, went nicely into what was the “multi out” port.

Here’s a great example of how you can make a simulated LED flame using Arduino and some LEDs. If you are looking for that special flame effect for this Halloween without all the really hazardous fire, this might be a great alternative to real fire.

The code accepts an arbitrary number of LED outputs, with a minimum brightness for the general glow. A peak brightness and traversal time are generated randomly, and the timed traversal smoothly walks across the outputs. The peak falls off, so the effect is of a smooth motion of the peak across the LEDs, to an arbitrary position along the line of outputs (as a float, rather than always peaking at a specific light). When arranged in a circle, it feels like the light is moving around the group, which casts moving shadows, and gives a flickering effect that’s much more convincing that a single light variably changing brightness.

Here’s another video of T-Mobile G1. I do like the phone but I still have some doubts about the slow T-mobile network. If I can recall right, the last time I test T-Mobile, it was as slow as AT&T.

I’d wait until a similar phone is available on Sprint or Verizon, I am not sure if I can handle this, iPhone and G1 on the most crappiest networks in America, darn. There’s goes another couple hundred bucks in my piggy bank, instead of to greedy telecommunication companies.
