Here’s a cool ethernet-enabled mechanical hit counter. It seems kind of over-powered using a relay but this can be a great source of information for similar applications.

So, when you ping salem, you’re actually hitting my firewall, which redirects ICMP type 8 (Echo Request) so the board, whose internal address is 192.168.0.2.The BX decodes the ping request and asserts a TTL output high for 50ms. This turns on the transistor, which fires the relay, which cycles the power, which increments the counter. Then, the webcam takes a picture of it every 5 seconds and stores the image in the www directory. Voila!

Okay, it seems like there’s a lot of people making money just blogging including this guy, John Chow.

Check out John Chow who made $7000 already in February. Actually some of his articles are very helpful such as the ReviewMe ad you see we put up today on the sidebar.

I like how he uses terms like affiliate whores and google whores. Just seemed very new down-to-earth terms for me to understand the whole blog marketing crap.

Check out this list of google whores. Well they really are the successful googlers but the term just sounds really funny.

I wonder if John has posted an article about yahoo whores…well there’s probably not many who made enough money using Yahoo Publisher’s Network yet…

We have been messing around with Pligg, a digg-like social CMS (content management system).
First we made wagthis.com hosted on Dreamhost but after running for a month the shared server seems to go down a lot.
Since then, we made a new one with better hardware on wagg.it.
(It took us like a month to register the domain name through a european registry but we were finally able to get it working…)

It’s a blog voting community where you can submit your blog posts and other bloggers can vote on posts. It’s still experimental at this point but check it out and if your blog post in on there, make sure to wagg it!

Each level has a couple of PC boards slammed in there, partially overlapping. This approach reflects a presumption of rapid obsolescence of cheap hardware, which would not need to be repaired. Several of the PCs never worked, and the system design optimized around multiple computer failures.

According to Larry and Sergey, the beta system used Duplo blocks for the chassis because generic brand plastic blocks were not rigid enough.

ROMI, South Koreas New House Cleaning Robot

The news that by the year 2020 that every South Korean will have a robot is probably going to
happen earlier. But the real good news is that ROMI is a voice-recognizing robot that cleans
your robot. I want one, will you guys send us samples?

The Korean Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has recently revealed a new house-cleaning robot called ROMI. This bot is expected to make its official debut at the CES 2007 trade show later this month where more information will be available.

ROMI is a floor-cleaning robot capable of understanding voice-activated commands. It has a video camera mounted in its head and can transmit video via a Wireless/CDMA connection to cell phones or PCs.

This is one of several household robots being introduced to South Korean homes this year in the preliminary stages of South Koreas larger goal to have a robot in every South Korean home by 2020.

Well, here’s a cool story, user zedomax might be the world’s fastest digger!

Hehe, too bad my account got erased, they thought I was doing some “unusual” hacking,
even though all I was doing was digging all the stories from the past. I think digg
has some issues with people digging too fast…oh well… :p

Anyways, we will just have to create some new accounts on digg for now.

Cool, now you can use some regular PC camera to scan 3D objects!

DAVID is a freeware software for laser range scanning. All you need is a PC, a camera (e.g. a webcam), a background corner, and a laser which projects a line onto the object you want to scan. So everyone can use it to scan objects without high costs; this is the big advantage over commercial solutions which are rather expensive.

DAVID has been developed by the computer scientists Dr. Simon Winkelbach and Sven Molkenstruck from the Institute for Robotics and Process Control, Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. The concept has been published as a paper at the German Association for Pattern Recognition (DAGM, Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Mustererkennung) and can be downloaded here.

The object you want to scan has to be put into the corner of a room or in front of two planes with an exact angle of 90°. The camera of course has to be pointed towards the object. The special thing about our solution is that you freely hold the laser in your hand, “brushing” the laser line over the object. Meanwhile the computer automatically calculates 3D coordinates of the scanned object surface. See the screenshots to get an impression of the software.

Nice Nintendo Wii hack for people who need this hack…bookmark it!

The Nintendo Wii ships with a composite video cable that is capable of 480i resolution. Currently first party component cables, which allow for 480p resolution, are available through retailers and directly from Nintendo. However, when attaching the component cables, one loses the ability to output composite video. Why is this an issue? Well, it may be that you take your Wii over to friends houses frequently and would like to only have to take a single cable. Or, you may be like me, and use an LCD computer monitor for your Wii’s display. My monitor has composite but no component in. To support high definition signals, I use a small transcoder box, the Mayflash YPbPr to RGB transcoder, that only supports progressive scan modes. However, many older games, such as GameCube games, and even some of the new Wii games, like Rayman Raving Rabbids, don’t support progressive scan. In these cases I end up with a black screen and need to switch cables to play the game. What a pain.

It’s a nice alternative If you don’t want one that runs off TTL logic, This one runs on a PIC 16F628 (Microchip is great for samples) and displays hours in 5 bits and minutes in 6. We’ve received word that a respected member of our tech community, James Kim (whom many of you may know as CNET’s senior editor of digital audio), and his family have gone missing. As we understand it, last weekend James, his wife Kati (above right), and his very young girls Penelope (left) and Sabine (baby), drove from their home in the SF Bay Area to Seattle. They were expected back some time Sunday, but were last seen by a hotel clerk at 5:45 PM on Saturday in or between Gold Beach or Portland, Oregon. We sincerely do hope they are all safe, and our hearts go out to the Kim family.

We’ll have more information as we get it. If you have any information as to the Kim family’s whereabouts, please contact the SFPD at 415-558-5508 during normal business hours, and 415-553-1071 after hours.
