Wordpress Hack – How to Run a Wordpress Blog on Lighttpd!

For the last couple months, I have been playing around with a lot of different web servers. Because my web servers kept going down, I had to find a new solution to help minimize my on-growing web server hosting costs.

About 2 years ago, one of the tech support guys at the dedicated server hosting company told me there’s a lighter web server called “Lighttpd”.

Well, I digged all the information I could on Lighttpd and found pieces of information that could let me run Zedomax.com on Lighttpd. (I also did find many other good web server alternatives like Nginx and Cherokee but I won’t go into that today, I will keep experimenting and reporting over at WebServerHacks.com, my new blog for that subject.)

Anyways, after 2 days of no sleep and digging the internet and trying on my test web servers, I finally mastered the art of running Lighttpd on my Wordpress blog.

Yes, this blog now runs Lighttpd, no more Apache. It runs waaay faster, handles waaay more web traffic, AND I saved a bunch of money on web server upgrades.

Anyways, I’ve detailed every step as best I can on how to run a Wordpress Blog on Lighttpd, step-by-step over at my new Web Server Hacks Blog, so check it out if you are running Wordpress blog and you need to save money/run sites faster.

In my recent conversions, my web servers are now able to handle about 2-3 times more web traffic than before using Lighttpd.

Wordpress DIY – How To Check For Spam Links After Being Attacked by Hackers!

About a month ago, some of my blogs got hacked BAD, they were FILLED with porn spam links. Of course, it took me awhile to realize that it was actually a Wordpress security hole. I complained to Wordpress people via Twitter but they told me Wordpress was secure.

Anyway, today I heard that Wordpress announced that Wordpress has security holes, meaning if you don’t use the latest versions, you are susceptible to worms that will take over your admin privileges and possibly do nasty things like put spam links all over your older blog posts.

I actually did a complete analysis on how hackers were doing it and indeed it’s all “automated” and they try to fill your older blog posts with spam links so they will go unnoticed if unless you check your last year’s blog posts.

You will need this simple code to see if they have injected any hidden spam links in your blog posts, just in case your blog got hacked.

Hackers will use “display:none” to “hide” their links from the browser so here’s the code you can download and save as “check.php”.

Change the DB name and password to yours. Then run it by opening the browser and pointing to check.php file or better, you can run it from linux command line if you are on dedicated servers like me.

The code here will simply to find any “display:none” and count how many there are. If you find zero, you should be okay but if you find like more than 10, you might want to dig into your database.

I also have the code for automatically getting rid of these spam links. One of my blogs had like 3,000 spam links so… If you want it, I will post it, just leave a comment.

My friend Josh over at Unconventional Marketing just pinged me via GoogleTalk on how to redirect your web site visitors based on IP address. Well, I figure this might be great information for others as well so I found a solution.

This method will work well because you can redirect single web pages using PHP instead of using .htaccess. I think php files are a lot more versatile and useful anyways.

You know, I haven’t had this much “hacking” fun since I first started this site. I just figured out how to install a Wordpress blog on my Palm Pre! It runs really well btw but I can’t tell you the domain name since Sprint might cancel my contract if too many people start accessing it.

Anyways, I’ve written a detailed DIY guide over at Palm Pre Hacks Blog, make sure to check it out if you plan on taking your website with you at all times.

P.S. I am sure there will be one day technology gets so good that my blog will run on a cellphone.

And yes, it’s 11:38PM saturday night, life doesn’t get better than this. hahaha.

Since the Palm Pre is based on Linux, I figured that you could probably run a Wordpress blog on the Palm Pre. Well, after about 3 hours of research, I found a way to run a wordpress blog using Optware Lighttpd and MySQL server. (Lighttpd is a “light” version of Apache pretty much and would be perfect candiate for the Palm Pre since its hardware isn’t made for full-fledged websites rather for a smartphone.)

The Best Grid, VPS, and Dedicated Server Web Hosting Review!

Over the last couple weeks, I have been doing a little “host” shopping, jumping from hosting company to another, thus Zedomax.com went down a lot. (Sorry about that, sometimes in life, you need to keep searching until you find the best deals.)

So, I’ve actually narrowed it down to 3 companies that provide the best “cloud/grid”, “VPS”, and dedicated servers.

This review is based on the 30+ blogs I manage, each of blogs getting anywhere from 100 to 20,000 pagesviews each.

In the end, I found that each hosting company had its strengths and weaknesses. Depending on what kind of web traffic you get and what kind of resources you need from a web server, you will have to choose your web hosting company “wisely”.

For the moment, I am using 3 hosting companies, MediaTemple, GoDaddy, and SingleHop, the ones I highly recommend to host your websites.

This web hosting review is for those of you who are serious about getting the best value/speed from your web server.

So, let me break it down by each company and what I’ve experienced.

Godaddy Grid Beta

This is the first time I have ever tried Godaddy’s web hosting services although I have used them in the past for all of my domain management. (Btw, GoDaddy is the best for Domain names, there’s no doubt about that.)

The GoDaddy Grid is actually in its beta phase and I was able to score a deal for $4.99/month for the first 3 months and $19.99 thereafter. I was sorta worried that the service seemed too cheap but in the end, the GoDaddy Grid is very reliable once you have your websites set up.

The GoDaddy Grid is probably the best option for anyone who wants to run a Wordpress blog for stability, price, and speed. I would highly recommend this over any other shared web hosting companies out there.

Btw, shared web hosting companies are the worst. You might pay like $100 for one year but trust me, shared web hosting companies are not reliable by any means if you are serious about getting your website up and running. I have tried BlueHost, DreamHost, you name it. The thing with shared hosts is that they are “shared”, you never know if you are going to be sharing your website with 10 other websites or 50.

Besides sharing the server, shared web hosting companies also share 1 dedicated IP address among those different websites. Meaning if that IP gets blacklisted for someone “spamming”, you will get affected too, even if they change the IP address.

Just stay away from shared hosting companies, they are the worst.

Pros

Grid offers “unlimited” resources. Grid is basically like a Cloud web hosting service, it can ramp up and provide your website with extra bandwidth up to 1000GB per month. That’s a lot of bandwith and the Godaddy offers great stability, especially if you are on a plane to Hawaii and your website gets digged or slashdotted.
SSH – Godaddy’s SSH is pretty functional for doing a lot downloading/uploading via wget or scp command. This comes in handy for busy webmasters like me who need to move 30+ websites in a matter of hours. Without SSH, it would take about 3 days to do the same thing. This is the number one reason I chose Godaddy over other cloud service providers like Rack Space Cloud.
I’ve loaded about 10K uniques/day on this grid server, it allows you to add about 20 websites. This is a really good sign, I am actually putting all my crappy sites with smaller traffic on Godaddy. You can check out DeClubz Blog, which gets about 3000 uniques/day, hosted on the GoDaddy Grid. (I was rather surprised the Grid didn’t crap out at all and runs flawlessly.)
You can load up to 20 websites/20 MySQL databases, this is the perfect server if you plan on making/running multiple websites in the future.

Cons

I’ve noticed that there’s some kind of automatic “throttling” by the Grid when you try to download/upload files over 100MB. This is normal on most cloud/grid/VPS servers as they need to protect the system against DoS attacks and whatnot. I still prefer fast downloads on pure dedicated as they waste less of my time, which is highly valuable to me. But again, this isn’t something that’s going to affect your website after you have set it up, it’s only going to be a little pain to restart your downloads.
Godaddy’s uses separate MySQL database, meaning you can use “localhost” as database domain. This can become quite a lot of pain for custom-coded sites but stuff like Wordpress shouldn’t be easy.
I found that some PHP coding didn’t go through as well with the Grid. There’s no ability for you to install/manipulate the core PHP files in the server. This is not a good thing for developers but if you are just running Wordpress, not a big deal at all.

For the regular price of $19.99, you can’t really get better than GoDaddy’s Grid service, especially since they provided a limited SSH, which is crucial for moving/setting up your sites in time.

Overall, I found that GoDaddy has the best bang for your buck for any sites getting between 100 to 10,000 pageviews/day, especially Wordpress blogs.

MediaTemple

MediaTemple isn’t a cloud nor grid web host, they run something very similar to it, a Virtual server utilized by Plesk, which is probably the most reliable virtual server system out there. I run Plesk on all my dedicated servers and it was easy for me to migrate all my websites to MediaTemple using Plesk, which has a native “import” tool so you can do a “1-click” migration when moving servers.

MediaTemple provides 3 different levels of service, the Grid(gv), the Dedicated Virtual(dv),and Dedicated Nitro(dpv).

The Grid(gv) I know have had some issues in the past so I didn’t even sign up for that, especially since you are also CPU-limited by the number of processing power you use. Although MediaTemple even gave money back to their customers in the past, I would highly avoid the grid, especially if you are serious about getting your website up and running 24/7. If there’s been problems with MediaTemple’s grid in the past, I am sure it will happen again. (Murphy’s Law) If your want to go grid, I would probably suggest GoDaddy’s Grid.

The Dedicated Virtual(dv) is the one I signed up for. It’s basically like a dedicated server except your server is virtualized within a number of servers.

There’s 3 different levels of the DV service:

Base – This is the most basic DV service you can get at $50/month. I have about 10 of my lower-end websites running on it. I could probably compared to a dedicated server with Dual-Core Xeon processor but you are going to be very limited by memory resources.
The most web traffic it can handle – around 3000 pageviews/day. I loaded couple sites but once I got over 3000 pagesviews/day, the server kept hitting its memory resource limits.
Rage – This is the second-tier DV service you can get at $100/month. I had most of my medium-end website running on it with about 10,000 pageviews/day. It ran fine but did experience some hiccups once I got over 10,000 pageviews/day. I think that is pretty much its limit. I did however upgrade to Extreme “instantly”. The best part about these DV servers is that you can upgrade your hardware instantly, I mean literally within seconds, no rebooting needed.
Extreme – This is the best DV service you can get at $150/month. You can also upgrade your RAM up to 512MB. I did find the Extreme server able to handle about 15,000 pageviews/day but again, my site (Zedomax.com) came to a crawling. I even tried hooking up Zedomax.com to 2 of these Extreme servers with 1 HTTPD and the other MySQLD. The major problem I faced was that there was no way to “locally” connect the 2 extreme servers. Without being locally connected, my ping times between the 2 servers averaged from 0.5ms to 10ms. This caused a havoc on the HTTPD server and load would go out of control. But don’t get me wrong, if you have less than 15,000 pageviews/day on your website, this is a really great server. I have most of my 3000 pageviews/day blogs running on the Extreme now.

Nitro – The Nitro is the next step up from the DV servers. I found that the price wasn’t worth the features as much as the DV servers. For $750/month, I could get 3 quad-core dedicated servers, which would probably be much better investment. I even talked to Tony at MediaTemple, who told me the same thing.

Room for Improvement?

MediaTemple needs to provide a medium point between its DV Extreme servers and the Nitro. For me, Nitro was an option but I wasn’t sure if that was even going to solve my problems since my blog has been always running on 2 quad-core dedicated servers. I wish there was something between the Extreme and Nitro.

You can clearly see that there’s an obvious gap between the price points of Extreme($150) and Nitro($750), that’s about $600!!!

If MediaTemple provides something in the mid-range so customers can pay like $300 and get somethine in-between, I am sure they would have more customers and also customers who need something in-between doesn’t have to overspend on a Nitro.

Another point is that even if a customer gets a separate DV Extreme server for database, MediaTemple does not provide a local switch between the 2 servers. This is a serious issue for sites like this as it’s a difference between me going out finding a job or keep running my blog and making a living from it.

Other than those 2 issues, MediaTemple is awesome virtual servers that perform.

Overall, I found that MediaTemple has the best bang for your buck for any sites getting between 3000 to 15,000 pageviews/day on the Dedicated Virtual servers. I am still using them on most of my medium-trafficked blogs, they are very reliable so long as your web traffic doesn’t get out of control.

SingleHop

If you are serious about getting your high-trafficked website up and running “FAST”, SingleHop is probably the best place to go as I have found their hardware, prices, and customer service excellent over all the other dedicated server hosting companies I have tried.

I have tried many other dedicated servers but SingleHop has the best prices for hardware.

If you get over 15,000 pageviews per day and you need multiple servers to run just one website (such as Zedomax.com), you will want to take advantage of SingleHop’s great deals on quad-core servers that come with default DDR2 8GB of memory. (Anything below 5000 pageviews/day, I do recommend MediaTemple for price.)

I actually got 2 of these servers to run this very site (Zedomax.com). It’s running and humming faster than ever and I have to say the best part about SingleHop is that they offer “gigabyte” switches between your servers as one of its basic add-ons. My site has been plagued before by slow MySQL server connections. I have talked to numerous people at hosting companies telling me that their “datacenters” are fast and I don’t need a local connection between servers. Yeah, well, anything above 1ms is NOT FAST for mission-critical blogs like this one. If my life depended on it (which it is), I would try using a gigabyte switch between servers.

I’ve experienced about 0.05 ms average of ping times between my servers at SingleHop using the gigabyte switch versus 5 ms average of ping times over at MediaTemple. (That’s about 100 times difference in MySQL speed!!!)

The end result?

My site loaded in about 5 to 30 seconds while on 2 MediaTemple DV servers while it took about 1 second while on 2 SingleHop dedicated servers. Well, it’s not a fair comparison since MediaTemple is much cheaper but I did learn my “expensive” lesson as Zedomax.com plummetted to like 9,000 pageviews instead of its normal 20,000 pageviews during the week of testing. (I could have paid for 2 dedicated servers for that loss…bummer.)

RackSpaceCloud

I did try RackSpaceCloud before trying GoDaddy and MediaTemple. In the end, I had to cancel my service because they did not provide SSH service plus FTP uploads took way too long. To move 30+ of my websites, that’s about 30 gigabytes of data, it would have took at least 24 hours on RackSpaceCloud while SSH would cut that down to about an hour. I simply don’t have much room for margin here, I am work against time, one man managing 30+ sites, I need it fast. Time is money, especially when it comes to moving servers. And the faster I can move my blogs, the more time I have for blogging and concentrating on my blogging business.

I have heard great things about RackSpaceCloud and if you don’t have much data and don’t mind uploading via FTP, go ahead and try RackSpaceCloud.

As for me, I decided to wait until RackSpaceCloud has SSH in the future. It simply doesn’t work for me if there’s no SSH. Everything should be fast as possible.

There’s also a “cloud server” which is bare-bones system for people like me but I don’t like paying my server by the hour, it doesn’t seem like a smart choice if I get “digged” suddenly one day and my bandwidth bill skyrockets above my profits.

Final Thoughts on Web Hosting

If you run multiple websites/blogs, you should NEVER to rely on one web host. My advice is to use at least 2 or 3 different web hosting companies so you don’t put all your eggs in one basket. It’s inevitable that every hosting company will have its “downtime”, whether that happens once every 100 years or 3 months, it’s something you cannot control.

If that “disaster” happens to your web hosting company, at least you will have other hosting companies to resort to while that “disaster” get resolved.

One time, all my websites were hosted with Aplus.net, I lost couple thousand dollar easy as Aplus.net was down for almost a WEEK! I did however move after Aplus.net was slow for couple days. Aplus.net did not offer me any kind of credit after that incident nor did they say they were sorry. I later found out that Aplus.net executive management team did that INTENTIONALLY so they can save themselves some money but not their customers. All they had to do was tell their customers that their servers are going to be down for another week and they would give money back for that month. I am not bitter though, they did take a nose-dive after that anyways and got bought by another company.

I am much more experienced now and smarter. Whatever web hosting companies you use, make sure they are reliable, fast, and priced competitively.

Some Tips on Using wget with SSH

The main reason I use hosting companies with SSH access is because I can transfer files between web servers, which is about 100 times faster than trying to upload files from your own computer. If you are a webmaster and you still don’t have a clue about SSH and using FTP for all your file transfers, I highly suggest you to dig into SSH more as it can ultimately save you enough time to go play golf instead of waiting for files to transfer.

One such command I use often is “wget” linux/unix command, you can easily download any files on any website via the HTTP protocol.

Simple usage:

wget http://mysite.com/myfile.zip

You can actually “resume” a download file if you happend to “stall” while using linux command wget. Just make sure to add “-c” at the end like this:

wget http://mysite.com/myfile.tar -c

This comes handy for those cloud/grid/VPS servers where you might stall often due to its throttling mechanism.

Web Server Hack – How to Use DDoS Deflate to Protect Against DoS Flooding!

I have been using DDoS Deflate, which is a simple script that will automatically help you against DoS attacks on your server. Basically it works by killing any HTTPD processes/banning IPs that reach more than set number of TCP connections.

It’s a great script since it’s free, simple, and works well against DoS attacks. Yes, forget paying that extra hundred dollars to your server company, who’s going to probably install this script anyways.

The real gem of the DDoS Deflate script lies in configuration. Depending on how you configure the DDoS script, you can protect yourself in number of different ways.

To install, simply follow these directions on your SSH command prompt in the linux server:

wget http://www.inetbase.com/scripts/ddos/install.sh
chmod 0700 install.sh
./install.sh

After installing, go to the directory /usr/local/ddos, where the configuration files are.

If you open up ddos.conf file using your favorite editor, you can edit the following settings for getting the most out of the script:

NO_OF_CONNECTIONS=150

This is the number of connections before your server kills/bans that IP address for a set amount of time. I think 150 works well but if you are suddenly getting attacked from smart hackers with many, many IPs, you could probably adjust this to a very low number.

BAN_PERIOD=600

You can adjust the BAN_PERIOD setting to set amount of time to ban that IP since you don’t want to ban the IP permanently, there could be other innocent visitors sharing the same IP.

You can first use the default settings in the beginning and play around a bit.

The script will also e-mail you under the default domain name root@mysite.com whenever an IP reaches beyond the maximum number of allowed connections. Make sure you set the e-mail correctly so you receive those alerts if you want them by editing the EMAIL_TO variable in the ddos.conf.

Using More than 1 server?

For example, you can also “whitelist” IP addresses that might be connected to your server such as your MySQL server by editing the file ignore.ip.list file under the same directory. By the way, I’ve accidently forgot to whitelist my MySQL server before and my website started showing “Database Connection Error”, don’t let that happen to you.

Well, that’s about it, this script is pretty good against DoS flooding so you don’t have to be manually messing with your iptables or whatnot. I install this script on everyone of my VPS/dedicated servers and you should too just in case some hacker decided to flood you with garbage.

Web Programming DIY – How to Protect Yourself Against Image Hotlinking!

For those of you who run small websites on shared servers, you might sometimes run into problems where your images are “hotlinked” and your bandwidth stolen. Here at Zedomax.com, we run a server farm so we don’t have bandwith problems so far but here’s 2 really great resources on how to protect yourself against image hotlinking:

AltLab.com has some simple instructions on how to stop hotlinking via .htaccess file in your web server.
AlistApart.com has a slightly more complex PHP method that can help you protect against unwanted hotlinking.

If you have a website with no hotlinking image problems, it’s probably wiser and more beneficial to let people hotlink your images. But of course, if your website starts going down for no reason, look at your web logs and see if someone has hotlinked your images. For one, social networking services like StumbleUpon is built on hotlinking images. If you use StumbleUpon a lot, you might want to check that your images are not being “stumbled” out of control. If it is, simply put the code and you won’t have to worry about your website going down. *Side Note – StumbleUpon really needs to “cache” those images instead of hotlinking.

Web Programming DIY – How to Protect Yourself Against Image Hotlinking!

Wordpress 2.8.2 Download!

As you might know, I have been fighting hackers all this weekend and last weekend, there seems to be many “loopholes” that the hackers are able to take advantage of, especially if you are even running version 2.8.1.

Well, looks like the WordPress Team has version 2.8.2 available for download, download Wordpress 2.8.2 here.

WordPress 2.8.2 fixes an XSS vulnerability. Comment author URLs were not fully sanitized when displayed in the admin. This could be exploited to redirect you away from the admin to another site. Download 2.8.2 or automatically upgrade from the Tools->Upgrade page of your blog’s admin.

This is precisely the problem with older Wordpress versions, hackers can easily exploit your admin area by inserting iframe injections. At least that’s what I’ve noticed.

Also, if you have been running Wordpress 2.5 and below before and upgraded, make sure you update your wp-config.php with secret keys. These secret keys will basically protect you from hackers hijacking your admin cookies.

You need to add the following lines if you haven’t:

These keys probably cause 99% of latest hackers exploits so update them as upgrading Wordpress won’t update your wp-config.php automatically. (Read more about them here)

Optimize Your Site. Use your keywords and phrases on your site. Put them in the title of your page, in the H1 tags, metatags and throughout your site. Use them in the text of links that point to your page. Shoot for having keyword density of about 6%.

FFFFOUND.com is a very interesting image bookmarking site that has been growing steadily. Here’s a neat DIY on how to make your own image bookmarking site like FFFFOUND:

I’ve been a daily visitor of ffffound for some time now, but I have never been lucky enough to receive an invite to actually use it. It’s a GREAT source of inspiration for all types of design, and I constantly refer to it and the QBN pic of the day thread for some good laughs and beautiful pictures. After realizing that I had a spare domain name I decided it was time to try and hack together a Wordpress theme with a few plugins that would emulate ffffound, and its related images feature.

Well, I’ve been messing with Twitter today, I even made a new URL shortening called U2S.Me in 2 hours, here’s how to make ReTweet This! button for your Wordpress blog froms scratch:

For those of you who want to create your own “ReTweet This!” button using your favorite URL shortener, (mine is U2S.Me, which I made from scratch) you can easily implement a CURL into your single.php to make this happen on the fly.

Here’s how to do it, add the following code in your single.php (This example uses U2S.Me to shorten URLs, you can easily change the 1st line of the PHP to fit TinyURL API or any other URL shortener you like but yes, do feel free to use mine, as it’s free!)

*Place the code where you want your ReTweet This! button to appear, I’ve placed before my content so Twitters can see it if they come to my site.

Now, this will basically execute CURL command to get the shortened URL back from U2S.Me, a URL shortening I made couple hours earlier in about couple hours.

You’ve probably noticed other codes that do something like http://myblog.com/p?=112 and this isn’t really great for SEO, shortening your URL first through a URL shortening service lets you preserve your SEO-friendly URL such as http://myblog.com/mycategory/myblogpost.

Here’s a sample Tweet created from the code:

GooseGrade one of those friendly companies I talk to at the Web 2.0 Expo this year. It’s a social networking site where people can submit their grammatical/spelling errors to be corrected by members of GooseGrade, who also earn status based on their previous corrections.

(You can read about exactly what the site is about by reading previous reviews from TechCrunch and ReadWriteWeb.)

At the Web 2.0 Expo, GooseGrade has launched a new Wordpress Plugin that will allow your readers and GooseGrade members to correct your blog posts. It’s a free service and if you are always running out of time like me, this Wordpress plugin can help you correct/edit/finalize your blog posts, mostly done by your readers while you approve of their correction if any are found.

I think this is a cool service and more bloggers should take advantage of it. Based on their market research, people tend to visit blogs more often when there are no grammatical/spelling errors. Probably true and I am guilty of not re-checking my blog posts too.

There’s been a lot of rumors that Web 2.0 Expo this year really sucked and I have to agree that there were less innovative companies than last year but it’s a good thing I took my crappy HD camera to take vids of the handfuls that are very, very innovative including this Znak It, launched just 1 day before Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco.

Znak It is a company that focuses on creating pay-as-you-go solution for your e-commerce, blog, or anything you are trying to sell such as “premium” content on your website.

It’s a really good idea since a lot of bloggers have “premium” content they could charge some money for. For example, maybe you have a DIY on how to make a POV golf club, and you wouldn’t be able to find this anywhere else in the world, I am sure people would pay for that content. (not that I would)

Here’s Znak It from their solution page:

Znak it! is quick, intuitive and smart. It does not require repeated log-in/log-out procedures and separate debit or credit card payments every time you want to access designated content. Importantly, Znak it! is also very private and secure. Individual transactions are anonymous to the content provider and other users; however, they are SSL encrypted and easily traceable, helping prevent unauthorized use or fraud.

To capture its simplicity and reliability, think of our virtual Znak as a postage stamp, The Znak it! process is another form of modern micro-payment – like marking a letter or document with a pre-paid stamp. In fact, in a couple of European languages, “znak” means a sign, mark or stamp. And just like the original paper-and-glue postage stamp, our virtual Znak can be used universally, by anyone on the Web, and almost instantly.

From what I’ve seen at their Web 2.0 expo booth, Znak It pretty much allows you to use a virtual currency that people can buy with real money to use on buying other stuff. It’s good because Znak It pretty much takes care of small transactions. (e.g. You can charge 20 cents for your premium content. You couldn’t do that with Paypal since Paypal charges at least 30 cents per transaction.)

If Znak-It gets big enough, it might become a viable alternative to Paypal. As for now, we will have to sit and wait, or even go try it out yourself here.

Well, I have a really long weekend as I worked through the weekend (as usual) but I still have plenty of interviews from Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco to blurt out.

Pringo is a new social networking platform that is compatible with many CMS including Wordpress. From what I can see, you can take your blog to another level by adding Pringo to your blog.

If you are running a blog on Wordpress, you will know that Wordpress lacks community features for social networking. Of course, you can always install Wordpress MU, which does exactly that but for those of us who don’t need a full-fledged blogging platform, Pringo might be the perfect way to engage your readers and bring a live community to your blog.

Pringo has been used on various famous platforms like eHarmony and Yokohama so I see a great value here.

Of course, I’d like to actually see a demo version you can download easily without filling out any forms but I am sure they will work on that for the future.

For large websites with large MySQL databases, you might need to setup a load-balanced MySQL Cluster. Here’s some great info on how to do that:

This tutorial shows how to configure a MySQL 5 cluster with three nodes: two storage nodes and one management node. This cluster is load-balanced by a high-availability load balancer that in fact has two nodes that use the Ultra Monkey package which provides heartbeat (for checking if the other node is still alive) and ldirectord (to split up the requests to the nodes of the MySQL cluster).

Well, here’s another way to setup a load balanced, high-availability apache cluster, this will be very informative if you are a webmaster working on high-trafficking sites.

This tutorial shows how to set up a two-node Apache web server cluster that provides high-availability. In front of the Apache cluster we create a load balancer that splits up incoming requests between the two Apache nodes. Because we do not want the load balancer to become another “Single Point Of Failure”, we must provide high-availability for the load balancer, too. Therefore our load balancer will in fact consist out of two load balancer nodes that monitor each other using heartbeat, and if one load balancer fails, the other takes over silently.

Here’s a good DIY for webmasters looking to expand their websites to handle more traffic with load balancing linux web servers. I have been looking into load-balancing even this site as it’s getting too big to manage with a single server.

All the software required to implement a LAMP cluster ships with most Linux distributions, so it’s easy to implement. We’ll construct a cluster using seven computers for a fictitious company, foo.com. Two servers will run DNS, primary and backup, to distribute Web requests among three Web servers that read and write data from two MySQL database servers. You could build any number of different designs, with more or fewer of each kind of server, but this model will serve as a good illustration of what can be done.

PHP DIY – How to Add RSS Feeds to Any Website/Blog using Magpie RSS Parser!

One of the most common things we do in today’s Web2.0 programming are RSS feeds. Now there’s a bunch of ways you can add RSS feeds to your website but let me tell you the BEST way using PHP.

1) Download and unzip Magpie RSS in your website root directory somewhere.

2) Anywhere in your PHP code, add the following line, while making sure the full directory path is specified. (I usually like to put it in directory such as “magpie”)

This will output the latest 10 RSS items. You can of course, change values and also do much more with more configuration. Refer to Magpie RSS Documents here.

There, you can probably do this in 5 minutes. I find it better to use this over any other Wordpress RSS plugin because it’s simple and it works. I used to use a plugin that kept dying on me or was simply too slow.

Using straight Magpie RSS is really fast and great for making some custom RSS sites.

Of course, couple it with PHP caching and you already got a website that can handle a LOT of traffic.

In my recent ventures, I have resorted to finding great PHP code to cache my website.

Even if you are not using Wordpress, you can still make a simple PHP caching mechanism without the use of Wordpress Super Cache. (Well, all Wordpress Super Cache is a PHP cache with user-friendly menus.)

Here’s how to add caching to your website:

Copy and paste the following code and save as “cache.php” in your website root directory:

Now, make sure your cache directory is CHMODded to 777 and you should start caching your website.

Also, you can schedule a CRON job for the clear.php to clear cache once a day or how often you’d like to.

This caching worked like a charm for Stattt.com, a stats website coded from scratch.

Well, I have been messing around with more web software (as usual). Last year, I made SiteHoppin, which is a complete hack job of open source MediaWiki, the same software that powers Wikipedia.

This year, (actually just last night) I am messing with Wordpress MU and BuddyPress, both which combined gives you some sort of blogging social network.

Anyways, I need some beta testers to work out kinks and feedback on what users want.

E-store DIY – How to Make an AJAX 1-Click Shopping Cart using Shopify E-Commerce!

Okay, today I will show you how to make an AJAX a-Click shopping cart using Shopify.com, an e-commerce hosting company I have used over and over for last couple years.

First, let me tell you I have done my research on various different shopping carts as I have made shopping carts for different companies.

So far, the best and simplest shopping cart/hosting is Shopify. I’ve tried X-cart and OScommerce but they need WAY too much customization.

Shopify has a default theme called, “Showroom”, which already has the capabilities of Lightbox (Lightbox is in-screen view of your product or image using AJAX) and 1-click checkout system.

Now the greatest part about this default theme Shopify provides is that users can head directly to checkout without leaving the homepage. This results in allowing visitors to browse the e-store 5-10 times faster while minimizing clicks, which is what you want when building a successful e-store.

Without delay, let me show you what I mean.

I have made a demo site on Shopify over here, try clicking on the T-shirt and you will see the Lightbox in-screen feature like this:

Now, try clicking on “Add to cart” and you will see that your shopping cart will “magically” appear at the bottom of the e-store like this:

Of course, this isn’t really magic but smart application of AJAX.

The most important thing to note here is that this isn’t just for looks, it allows your visitors to browse your entire e-store faster, without leaving your homepage.

I’ve also looked into SEO factors/usability regarding this AJAX method, and it’s fine as there’s also optional product page links for those of people with older browsers (IE5 and less) or javascripts disabled.

The first time I saw this type of shopping cart was here.

Of course, Shopify theme doesn’t get “drag and drop” but still, it’s Web 2.0 at it’s best.

Now, let me show you how to make an AJAX 1-click shopping cart on any custom theme you make:

1) First, you will need to design your own custom theme using Liquid, which is basically Ruby-on-Rails. (Or best way is to modify the default Shopify theme to your custom theme.)

2) After you are finished making your own custom theme, you simply need to port over some code from Shopify’s Showroom theme.

Here’s how to port over that code:

1) First, you need to copy over all the scripts, lightbox code, and shopping cart code from the file theme.liquid of Showroom theme to your showroom theme.

The script code is necessary for all the AJAX to work.

The lightbox code is necessary for in-screen product views.

The shopping cart code is necessary for in-screen shopping-cart at the bottom of your e-store.

(All this code is in theme.liquid file of Shopify’s Showroom theme.)

Last but not least, you will need to add the following code for any “Add to Cart” buttons you might use in index.liquid or product.liquid:

You can also specify th product-{{product.id}} by exact product name like this:

This will enable the in-screen product preview when people click on your Add to Cart button or you can also use it for tags like this:

Now, that’s about it. Sometimes you might have some crash with the shopping cart on IE6 if you have dropdown javascript menus.

For that occasion, you can disable the AJAX feature by adding before any code you added:

at the end of any code you added.

I’ve just implemented this over at my client’s Keetsa E-store over here in just 2.5 hours yesterday and wanted to share it with anyone who’s using Shopify.

Plus, there was no how-to guide on how to port Shopify’s Showroom theme but here it is.

This is simply the greatest way to implement a new e-store that will allow your visitors to shop in real “Web 2.0″ method while increasing your sales conversion rates.

Well, today I am going to do a quick blog DIY on how to increase your revenue by 25% by adding Chitika Premium ads to your blog/website.

Of course, this increase is in comparison to how much you might already be making with Google Adsense ads.

One of the most important things bloggers forget is that making money with Adsense or Chitika, is all about ad placement. Where you place your ads on your site could make a difference of making $100/month or $500 to $1000/month. That’s right, when you optimize your ad placements, you can make 5-10 times more.

Anyways, I will tell you right off the bat that if you are going to increase your Adsense revenue by 25% or more, you need to do the following:

1. Use 550×120 size, if it doesn’t fit in your website, try to use the next biggest, widest size available.

2. Place 1 ad before your content and 1 ad after your content. For correct placement along with AdSense, please refer to the Adsense/Chitika HeatMap I made here.

That’s it. The best part about the Chitika Premium ads is that they only show up on your “search” traffic so they are practically invisible to your regular readers. (Talk about really invisible ads… Of course, you can also do this with Adsense too by adding some PHP code, if anyone wants it, I can do another blog post on it, just let me know.)

Now, do you want to make even more money with Chitika Premium?

Well, Chitika has been testing these “tabless” ads, all you have to do is add the following code within your Chitika Javascript code:

Now, you will also have to contact Chitika to activate this tabless feature as it’s invitation-only but I found this simple trick will increase your Chitika revenue by an additional 10-25%. (You can find more information on this hack here.)

Well, I started writing a DIY on how to make a Wordpress Blog over at my Ad Optimization blog and it got rather long. But I do tell you how to make a Wordpress blog with all the bells and whistles in just 2 hours and also what “skills” you’d need to do it that fast.

If you are thinking about designing blogs for a living, this will definitely of great help in getting things done faster.

Here’s an excerpt:

1. I go to GoDaddy.com and register domain. As soon as I register, I point the DNS to one of my dedicated servers. As long as you set the IP within 5 minute time frame, your domain will be live in less than 5 minutes. I find that GoDaddy is the best domain company out there today and part of the reason I can do this fast is that their systems run fast too. (Don’t use Network Solutions btw, they are one of the worst I’ve used)

Time to do this for me: 10 minutes

2. I SSH2 into my dedicated server, download the latest Wordpress software, load all the plugins, activate the blog, do various setup for the blog.

Time to do this for me: 15 minutes

3. I load one of my blog themes and customize the CSS layout and colors.

Time to do this for me: 15 minutes

4. Design a logo, favicons on Photoshop, load it onto the blog as quickly as I can.

Time to do this for me: 30 minutes

5. Do 5 blog posts.

Time to do this for me: 30 minutes

Well, that’s total of 1 hour and 40 minutes to setup a brand new blog with a brand new design.

Well, I am proud to announce that I have updated some stuff and Zedomax Search Wordpress Theme v.0.3 has been released for free downloads.

I haved fixed some weird IE6 CSS bugs plus added capability for you to add Digg-style voting plugin and Page Number plugin.
(Basically, the coding has been done transparently so all you have to do is activate the plugins. If you don’t use the plugins, they won’t mess up the theme either)

Here’s the supported plugins:

WP Page numbers – This plugin allows you to use page numbers instead of Wordpress default “Newer/Older Posts”

WP Post ratings – This plugin allows your blog posts to be voted, similar to Digg.

I will be adding more support for more plugins later down the road so hope you enjoy the free Wordpress theme and I am also writing a book called “Search” so watch out for that too.

MySQL Optimization Hack – How to Increase Load without Failing your MySQL Server!

As you well know, I have actually not been blogging for the last few weeks, it’s all done by our network blogger, Andrew. (Thank you Andrew btw, you saved my as* during a horribly busy month) – I have updated the author links too so you know who’s writing which blog posts.

I have been busy with legalization of my company lately, sorry if I haven’t been posting for our regular readers.

Anyways, today I got an update on the Wordpress Translator Plugin from Angsuman over at Simple Thoughts blog. I’ve always been facinated by his programming and his plugin, even though it’s not free, he has been giving me free updates for last 2 years, that’s called “excellent” customer service.

The thing that interests me the most is not the translator update (I do highly recommend it if you have a blog), but his blog post on how to increase load without failing your server.

(For those of you not familiar with MySQL or website programming, please head over to another blog post as this will be boring for you. )

It’s so simple, it’s one line added to your my.cnf file under /etc directory.

max_write_lock_count = 1

I’ve actually tested this configuration on my SiteHoppin server where there’s many, many SELECT and UPDATE MySQL commands as people submit new URLs constantly to the ever-growing database.

After using this configuration, I’ve experienced that my server actually can handle 5-10 times more traffic, which is awesome since I was about to spend another $500 on a quad-core, 16GB dedicated server.

I cannot really prove how it works other than I trust Angsuman and I know he’s much better programmer than I am so head over to his blog post over here if you want to know the technical stuff behind it.

Here’s an excerpt:

MySQL executes INSERT & UPDATE statements with higher priority. Also INSERT & UPDATE statements require table lock (for MYISAM engines) which requires even table reads (SELECT statements) to be completed before INSERT & UPDATES are executed. This can cause long delays for SELECT statements waiting behind an INSERT or UPDATE statement, which may itself take minimal time to execute, which is waiting for existing long running SQL Select statements to be completed. So even a single INSERT or UPDATE can slow-down a heavily loaded database at unpredictable times.

One solution is to use INSERT DELAYED statement to cause INSERT statements to be run at lower priority in a queue. However similar statement for UPDATE isn’t available. Also in our experiments it proved to be significantly inferior to the solution I will describe next. So are you ready?

I recommend that you add the following line in /etc/my.cnf (MYSQL configuration file in Linux; search for my.cnf in Windows) to drastically reduce the possibility of such bottlenecks, as described above, and improve the performance of heavily loaded servers:

max_write_lock_count = 1

By starting mysqld with a low value for the max_write_lock_count system variable you are forcing MySQL to temporarily elevate the priority of all SELECT statements that are waiting for a table after a specific number of inserts to the table occur. This allows READ locks after a certain number of WRITE locks. Is that clear?

The bottomline is that this simple configuration can drastically improve your MySQL performance especially if your server is heavily loaded. You should try this for optimizing any heavily loaded MySQL server including but not limited to WordPress site databases for example.
