I just got pinged from @SpaceAstro on my Twitter feed, NASA’s Expedition 21 is like launching launched as I write this blog post, take a look on NASA TV if you care for big launches!

I took some quick screenshots of the Expedition 21 taking off for those of you who missed it.

(This is right after it launched, looks cool, doesn’t it?)

(After awhile, I think most of the rocket fuel dropped off, it looks like a fireball.)

(I think this is the stage entering into space…)

Good thing the astronauts on the Expedition 21 are okay, so far so good.

The first plant on the Moon could be this one, it is the work of two organisations, Odyssey Moon and the Paragon Space Development Corporation, their combined goal is to go after the Google Lunar X Prize worth $30 million!

The plan is to get this self contained capsule to the Moon where it will grow, sow seeds etc, in fact complete the entire plant life cycle proving that a self contained unit could survive up there with no human interference. Could this be the future of space travel, where whole families and communities are launched into space in self contained capsules?

NASA’s new Spacesuits look more like a Body-Builder!

Check out the new spacesuits (on the right) that NASA has been working on. It definitely looks more like a body builder now when you wear one.

NASA just awarded its future spacesuit contract to Oceaneering International. The US firm must now design, test, and produce two suits — the default suit (pictured after the break) worn on-board for launch and landing and a second, more versatile, cheese-proof suit worn during space walks and upon the surface of the moon.

Yey, let’s see if Sergey can take himself to space soon with his $5 Million investment.

A new investor is likely to occupy one of the two available seats on Space Adventures’ 2011 flight: Sergey Brin, a co-founder of Google. He made a $5 million investment in the company that will serve as a deposit on a future flight.

Space Adventures plans to announce the flight and Mr. Brin’s participation in a news conference Wednesday morning at the Explorers Club in New York.

Virgin Galatic, 3 Hour Space Travel, ready for reservations, can you afford it?

I first saw an article about Virgin’s Richard Branson on Wired magazine couple months ago. Virgin announced that it was launching a public service where people can experience zero-gravity.

Basically, Virgin is taking space travel into reality for normal people like you and me.

Anyways, I was SiteHoppin’ along for some random Entrecard tech blogs and found a blog post that now you can go make your reservations.

How much does it cost?

Flights require three days of training and cost 200k with a 20k deposit.

Wow, it sounds like a lot of fun, especially if you get to be weightless.

What do you get?

The Mother Ship known as Space Ship Two ( 2nd version of spaceship ) flies to an altitude of about 50,000 feet and disconnects a separate space ship. This rocket ship fires up and shoots into outer space at about 360,000 feet, for the ride of your life. Passengers will experience 3 to 4 g’s during the initial launch into space. The zero gravity environment is said to last about 5 minutes before its decent back to earth. The whole trip takes about 2 1/2 hours.

Although the whole trip only lasts about two and half hours, if you got money to burn, this might be better than most “earthy” experiences such as skydiving, snowboarding, etc…etc… If you are interested, go get a spot for your first space travel here.

NASA creates flying telescope

This is an attempt to get some great images from space, but without the costs involved by maintaining the Hubble telescope in space, which is great but hugely expensive.

This forms part of the NASA Origins program and by working with the DLR who are the German Aerospace Centre they have developed a flying telescope inside a Boeing 747SP. This will fly at 47,000 feet and should some really cool images from space.

This could be a viable alternative to the Hubble and the space used to maintain it, however we will need to wait for until around 2009to see if it works as good as hope, when it is fully operational.

High altitude ballooning is an emerging hobby, since price of GPS and communications equipment has gotten quite low. It is an excellent hobby for people fascinated by space flight and telerobotics and has many learning aspects — from systems design to electronics design to software engineering. There is also an exciting risk factor, namely, that you could lose your precious electronics if something malfunctions. In this project, many of my interest and knowledge areas came together. Also, I have verified that the Earth is indeed round and that space is black.

Bre Pettis of MAKE also built and launched a near-space balloon, but never found it. See his videos (part 1 and 2).

Check out these Cool ALAVs (Autonomous Light Vessels) by Jed Berk! Tight! It uses Sun Microsystems SunSpot microcontroller, which can be programmed in Java. I like this idea since there’s a lot of Java embedded processors out there but this ones from the creators. Jed tells me that all the pieces were 3D designed on the computer and laser-cut, kinda cool~

Jed says, Make Store will have these cool DIY ALAV kits soon!

Internet is kinda slow here at the Maker Faire. (That’s why our posts are slow too.) We even switched to a Sprint Broadband but with live video streaming, it’s still too slow but we will keep postin’~

It’s a chair but not as we know it

At first glance this contraption looks slightly rude, in what way I am not completely sure, but having read about the Solar System Chair it appears to be the cutting edge design for furniture, even though it does look somewhat uncomfortable.

The solar system part of this chair has nothing to do with technology of gadgetry but in fact if you study it closer, the red balls represent the planets rotating around the sun, I think!

Whatever the design purpose it is certainly eye catchingly brilliant, made from bright stainless steel tubing, and the red balls, which act as cushioning, it is defiantly a cool design, but somehow I don’t think that I would like to be sitting on that all day long.

At a price of only £99 ($200) it does appear to be good value.

Holy cow, check these guys out, they made cool homemade rockets that almost resemble powerful bottle rockets!

This is the first static test with our homemade tar/oxygen hybrid rocket motor. James Turner and myself (Eric Stackpole), and two of our friends, Jeff Bernard and Caleb Lesher did this project last summer because we wanted to learn more about how rocket engines work. We built the rocket in James’ garage in Humboldt County, CA completely out of parts we got at the local hardware store. We had previously done a little over 20 tests with polyethylene, but none of them came close to this having much power (note the shaking of the camera when the rocket fires.)

Tight, SpaceX Falcon 1 launched and made it into space!

It looks like there’s a good chance today’s SpaceX launch will be successful – Founder Elon Musk just wrote that they made it into space. The maiden launch attempt one year ago didn’t go so well, and today’s launch was almost aborted.

We’re using weather balloons to go up to approximately 100k feet armed with 4 cameras… 20 megapixels of camera! We’ll be taking shots every 7 seconds for two hours and measuring the temperature with the Make: controller and thermistors!

PhysOrg.com says “thanks to clever use of space-saving technology the S4E19863 series is the world’s smallest GPS module (7 mm x 6 mm x 1.28 mm), making it ideal for applications with limited component space, such as mobile phones. ”

Epson’s new GPS is already being massed produced and is already integrated into NTT DoCoMo’s FOMA 903i series mobile phone. It does look extra tiny on that finger there.

Cool nice little hack for google earth!

If air drumming or imaginary light sabers aren’t your thing, then perhaps the familiar territory of Google Earth will be enough to get you to pull your Wiimote away from Zelda long enough to run a few scripts on your PC. There’s nothing too complicated going on here, with just the requisite GlovePIE software (the Wiimote’s new best friend) and the Google Earth script written by the star of today’s video, J. Coulston, needed to take the world in your hands. Once you’ve got that up and running, you’ll be able to impress your friends and navigate the globe with the flip of your wrist. Just don’t get too excited when you spot your neighborhood. You know what can happen.

We’ve received word that a respected member of our tech community, James Kim (whom many of you may know as CNET’s senior editor of digital audio), and his family have gone missing. As we understand it, last weekend James, his wife Kati (above right), and his very young girls Penelope (left) and Sabine (baby), drove from their home in the SF Bay Area to Seattle. They were expected back some time Sunday, but were last seen by a hotel clerk at 5:45 PM on Saturday in or between Gold Beach or Portland, Oregon. We sincerely do hope they are all safe, and our hearts go out to the Kim family.

We’ll have more information as we get it. If you have any information as to the Kim family’s whereabouts, please contact the SFPD at 415-558-5508 during normal business hours, and 415-553-1071 after hours.

Right now it’s in beta testing period, so if you need a place for your information organization, this might be a good place to start.

I thought about how restricted wikipedia was becoming, it’s like a free place that’s not free anymore, but here’s a wiki that is free, at least for now.

Here’s an interesting project that could be used for many applications including “airmouse”…

…use four screens, and sometimes lose my cursor. No more! I have Obi-WanQui-Gon to point the way for me. Using the Makezine Controller, a small X program, OSC, and a pair of servo motors, I have a real-life cursor. The X program tracks the cursor, and ten times a second, sends an OSC (Open Sound Control) command using sendOSC to the controller…

DC from SpaceElevator came by the other day at my work to pick up some XPORT and XPORT Dongles. Well, he told me about some cool sites that build space elevators! The competition will be held at the X-PRIZE Cup in Las Cruces, NM on October 20-21. Thanks DC for the info!

Elevator:2010 is designed to address the “social engineering” of the Space Elevator. Taking our cue from the X-prize, solar car races, and various other competitive ventures, we use engineering competitions as a tool to capture mindshare in academia, space enthusiast community, and the general public.In the days of airships, the advocates of planes devised a new way to promote their (obviously impractical…) inventions. It was called an “air show”, and it had a dual purpose: First, these pioneers knew that they could explain airplanes all they wanted using equations and diagrams – it was not until they showed them flying that they really got their message across. Second, they recognized the power of competition – by bringing together airplane enthusiasts in a competitive environment, they were able to accelerate the rate of development beyond what was likely in the isolated confines of their shops.

Our goal is to infect the engineering and science community with our passion for building the Space Elevator, thus making them ambassadors to our cause. As the fruits of their efforts take to the air every year, we will have demonstrated the feasibility and sheer simplicity of the Space Elevator concept, and will have brought it closer to reality.
