We are going to make DIY RJ45 Cable tester for incredible cheap.As you know cable testers are really expensive insturments and for people who always works with network it is an essential part.

I have to admit, my Comcast cable DSL is pretty darn fast, fast enough for me to get things done but it’s never fast enough as the fiber-optic networked 300Mbps that virtually every household in South Korea is getting.

Every year, I talk to one of my friends in South Korea. 3 years ago, I asked my friend, “so, how fast is your internet now?” He replies, “I get 100Mbps at my apartment, they’ve got fiber-optics connected to the central network in Seoul.”

Couple days ago, I asked my friend again the same question, he replies, “I get somewhere around 300Mbps in my apartment, South Korea has upgraded their network every year.”

Of course, you have to think about how much easier it is to setup fiber-optic cables all across South Korea while the States would take at least 50-100 times more wires.

Besides, that their mobile broadband is also 50 times faster with WiMax.

So what?

I am just complaining that the U.S. is falling behind the world broadband race. I am surprised that the U.S. has interstate highways all over America (which something no other country in the world can copy), yet the internet infrastructure is no where in comparison.

What is HDMI and What is DHCP?

LOL, I got these 2 questions from one of my Laptop Blog readers:

“What is HDMI”

“What is DHCP?”

Well, since I am a nice guy, I figured I’d helping in my simple language but here’s my definition of them for all of you readers who don’t know:

“What is HDMI”

HDMI is the adaptor that lets you connect your laptop/computer to an HD LCD TV digitally, about 100 times better quality than something like SVIDEO. Plus, you can also transfer audio through the same cable so you don’t need 3 cables like back in the day.

Here’s my tip on HDMI. If you are going to connect your laptop to your new 50-inch HD LCD TV, make sure to buy a laptop with support for HDMI. Then you can surf the web in crystal, clear picture via HDMI. (Read my HDMI tips here Also you can get a cheap, long 25-feet HDMI cable here.) HDMI is basically da shi+!

According to Wikipedia:

High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a compact audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed digital data.[1] It represents a digital alternative to consumer analog standards, such as Radio Frequency (RF) coaxial cable, composite video, S-Video, SCART, component video, D-Terminal, and VGA. HDMI connects digital audio/video sources—such as set-top boxes, Blu-ray Disc players, personal computers (PCs), video game consoles (such as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360), and AV receivers—to compatible digital audio devices, computer monitors, and digital televisions.[1]

“What is DHCP?”

DHCP is how you can generate shared IP addresses from a single IP address. This is needed for example, to connect multiple computers/laptops on your DSL. Without DHCP, it’d be impossible.

DHCP allows you to create a network of computers from a single IP address, or make private addresses such as 192.168.1.X or 10.0.0.X where X can be anywhere from 1 to 255. Of course, usually the router itself needs an address so you will have to reserve one of private IPs for that.

With DHCP, most of you computers are safely behind a firewall but you can specify one of those IP address to represent public.

According to WIkipedia:

In computer networking, the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network application protocol used by devices (DHCP clients) to obtain configuration information for operation in an Internet Protocol network. This protocol reduces system administration workload, allowing networks to add devices with little or no manual intervention.

I tried to make it as simple as possible for non-computer geeks to understand here but please feel free to add in the comments line if you think you can explain HDMI and DHCP in simpler terms.

Are you one of those people who forget to close your garage door before leaving on a vacation to another country?

Well, do not worry as there’s a cool hack that shows you how to make a remote garage monitor so you can check it anywhere including your iPhone or Palm Pre.

Also, you can probably add a simple relay and open/close the garage door remotely.

Problem: My garage is detached from my house, difficult to see if the doors are open from the house. Or maybe I am in a hurry to ride to work and forgot to close the door.

Solution: Parallax BS2 based monitor. I can check the status of my garage doors form the web, and with a plugin to Nagios I get paged if it open more than 15 minutes.

Today, I find a great spot near the SF Bay where the winds blog and I can enjoy the outdoors while working on my netbook inside my car. Well, one of the problems I encountered was that the spot didn’t get great cellular signals for my Sprint broadband card. It was one of those remote locations where I got 1xRT instead of EDVO Rev A signals.

There’s actually a lot of ways you can boost your voice/data cellular signals such as a mobile cellular repeaters but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.

For those situations, I found a cheaper solution which might work well called Cell Ranger, a 12V in-car device that will boost any kind of 3G device on 800Mhz/850Mhz/1900Mhz signals. (This includes most carriers like Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon but not Nextel. Nextel is part of Sprint that does chirp btw but it won’t affect your broadband card or phones like the Palm Pre.)

I will be ordering this to test it out at my “spot” so in the meanwhile, you can get one too and boost your cellphone signal.

PCWorld has recently conducted an unbiased data test for the 3 big cellular providers Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T.

The results are not shocking as AT&T had the most unreliable service, meaning you could get fast download speeds in your bathroom while you might even struggle to get connection while you drive.

On the bright side, Verizon and Sprint came out on top for reliability, which is probably the most important factor in choosing the fastest data network for your smartphone, iPhone, or Palm Pre. Oops, iPhone is not available on Verizon or Sprint, I would simply wait until it is available if you really want the iPhone or just get a iPod Touch like I did.

These test verify my recent speed test of iPhone 3G versus the Palm Pre. Of course, I have been complaining about AT&T’s slow service ever since it came out or even the days before AT&T’s cellular network used to be called Cingular.

Don’t forget that Sprint is the only data network rolling out 4G right now. If you are on any other network, you will eventually have to switch to be up to speed.

As all things, I hate anything that’s slow but I heart anything that can be done as fast as humanly possible.

Make a wise choice when you choose your network for your cellphone. If you happened to live in good AT&T coverage/speed area, well you must be one of the few. But otherwise, Sprint is probably the better choice, common sense, not biased opinion.

Linux DIY – How to Create an SSH Tunnel and Share Internet Through Another Computer!

Well, I am in the process of creating a local tunnel connection between two of my web servers from MediaTemple (thanks Eric for the help btw), I stumbled across this cool Linux DIY that shows you how to create an SSH Tunnel between two linux computers and share the internet via proxy port number 2020.

This might be very useful if you happen to run a bunch of linux machines and run out of ethernet lines. (and you are not using WiFi)

To create a tunnel you need to check that ssh service is running on the computer that you want to connect.
For Ubuntu or Debian based distribution: sudo /etc/init.d/sshd start

For fedora or other RedHat based distribution: /etc/init.d/ssh start

On the machine or the computer that you will use to browse the internet. Open a terminal window and type the following:
ssh -fND 2020 username@192.168.xxx.xxx

To start the proxy, SSH will ask you for the authenticity of your host, just type “yes” and enter your password. It will look as nothing has happened but SSH tunneling is already working.

Download Ethereal – I have used Ethereal for a long time before when I used to work as an embedded network engineer. It’s a great tool and shows pretty much every packet your network passes around. (great for wifi)

Download Wireshark – Similar to Ethereal, I believe this tool is based on the same core as the Ethereal.

Well that is what you would be saying if you owned a web cam like this one. Behind the mirror is the web cam so you can stare into it and at the same time see yourself how others on the other end of the connection can see you, nice!

Now some people would say that this is perfect for women, but I am not totally sure about that, because I have seen some men carry on worse than any woman over their appearance. Especially with the ring of lights around the mirror.

Mind you it is a good idea to know that you do look ok, when making a conference call or something for your business etc. It is connected via the USB port, which would that there is no software to download. Unfortunately there are no prices and much other information on this device as of yet.

These images were taken of an ATM machine in Russia, not quite sure exactly where, but this does throw some suspicion on how safe your money is when there are machines like this one blatantly out there just waiting for the next customer to come along and give it your card and PIN number.

Is this a scam? We do not really know, but the whole thing looks seriously suspicious, after all would you put your card in there and then give it your PIN number?

Cingular vs. Sprint – HSDPA vs. EDVO

I’ve been doing a lot of research lately after my HTC 8125 broke, but it came back to life about a week later.

Since my HTC 8125 is so slow, I had to find a new phone that was FAST. I went to all the stores with demo phones including Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, and didn’t really bother going to T-mobile. Anyways, some of the Cingular stores had these HTC 8525 demos hooked up on Wi-fi so I thought it was really fast until I turned the Wifi off.

After going to all these stores, I found Sprint and Verizon had the fastest internet. (As far as simply bringing up a big site like Make on the phone)

What’s HSDPA and EDVO?

HSDPA is basically the data internet network for GSM phones (Cingular, T-Mobile) and EDVO is the one for CDMA phones. (Sprint, Verizon)

I am really looking forward to WiMAX, which is a network running on CDMA and supposedly is faster than your DSL or cable.

Browsing Tests

My current HTC 8125 on Cingular takes about 2 minutes.

Verizon took about 30 seconds and Sprint was slightly faster at about 20 seconds.

Then I went to the Cingular store and tested their HSDPA enabled HTC 8525 phone which took about 1 minute and a half to load up Makezine.

Well, this is all great, but where is the proof?

So, I found a cool site that tests your cellphone speed. I checked out the Cingular store and the Sprint store again.

Although I wanted to switch to Sprint, I wanted to do a last check for the fastest phone.

Here’s the results:

Cingular HTC 8125:

400 K bits/sec

Cingular Samsung Blackjack:

830K bits/sec

Sprint PPC-6700

1100K bits/sec

I wanted to test the Motorola-Q too at the Sprint store but maybe next time…

Actually, the Sprint PPC-6700 flutuated between 500K bits/sec to 1600K bits/sec

Overall, when browsing sites, the Sprint PPC-6700 loaded faster whereas the Cingular phones loaded very slowly regardless of the speed test.

If you are going to go with Cingular, make sure to get the HTC8525, which is the only phone that supports HSDPA. Actually maybe Blackjack does too…

I will update you on some results after my new Sprint phone purchases. (We are gettin’ the Moto Q and the Samsung IP-830W for some rugged testing…)

Also expect EDVO Rev B to boost some EDVO enabled phones… (Sprint, Verizon) Up to 9Mbps downloads!

Localhost 127.0.0.1 Doormat

If you are a network manager or likes to mess with network stuff, you know what this localhost 127.0.0.1 Doormat is for. ( For your home, of course!)

For those of you non-network IT managers, 127.0.0.1 is the IP address of Localhost on a computer or server. You can do a test in DOS command line, “ping 127.0.0.1″, and see if your network card is workin’

Wikipedia has a good definition of Localhost and Answers has a good technical info on Localhost too.

DIY HACK – How to rewiring an existing phone system to be used as an Ethernet network!

Here’s a cool DIY on how to convert your home phone lines into an ethernet network. I’ve tried this before with some success but here’s a great how to you can follow.

Coarch says,

This is a guide to hacking the wiring of your home. Changing it from a phone line based system to a flexible and extensible home network. I upgraded the wiring in my condo since we didn’t use a analog phone service. I changed all my phone ports to network ports. This allows me to easily transition back to a phone system in the event we decide to use a local phone service instead of cell phones. Now that all of my phone jacks are network jacks I can add a gigabit hub for fast network access. When I don’t need to transfer large files, 2gb and bellow, I can use my wireless network.

IP in Your Email, get your external IP and send it to any email

Here’s a cool blog I came across on our new wagg.it site.
It’s a custom application that will send email containing current external IP address to a specified email address automatically at set intervals.

Why do you need this?

I used to work as a network administrator at a company and had issues with DDNS (dynamic DNS) addresses where the domain name can change.
We used to use free DDNS services such as no-ip.com but this tool will allow you to bypass that and simply check your email to access your server. (Therefore keeping it even more secure…)

This can be great tool for embedded TCP/IP applications too.

What was that IP address again? How many times did you wish you had the IP of your crashing router on your home network to do a quick reset. I used to have a Linksys that would crash at least once a month at the most inopportune times and I designed this application to send me my network’s external IP address everyday or what ever intervals I wanted. Many ISPs with broadband give you a dynamic IP address and this helps you know that you are up and running and what the IP address is. It also is a nice monitor sending hourly emails for testing flaky connections. I have grown used to being able to view my external IP from my system tray and at the request of others with the same problems I created IP in Your Email application (don’t send me emails on the name).

We have been messing around with Pligg, a digg-like social CMS (content management system).
First we made wagthis.com hosted on Dreamhost but after running for a month the shared server seems to go down a lot.
Since then, we made a new one with better hardware on wagg.it.
(It took us like a month to register the domain name through a european registry but we were finally able to get it working…)

It’s a blog voting community where you can submit your blog posts and other bloggers can vote on posts. It’s still experimental at this point but check it out and if your blog post in on there, make sure to wagg it!

Noticed we haven’t been posting as much lately? We got a server upgrade (now we got more servers) over the last couple days to handle more traffic and make the website load faster.

Finally, we are ready to go at full speed again without being slowed down by mysql and web server. We now have different servers to handle the mysql and the web server.

DIY – Simple LCD Control with Ethernet

Here’s a cool project that you can control your LCD with ethernet.

The simple “switch on/off a relay” circuit which was the only function provided by the avr web server until now did not require HTML-forms. I used simply 2 URLs http://baseurl/password/1 for switching on and http://baseurl/password/0 for switching off. This does not work anymore for the display as we want to type a text into a web page which should then be shown on the display. What is needed is a needed is a proper decoding of HTML form data.

Wow, here’s a cool internet controlled security robot using CUBLOC
CB280, CuBASE 32M, CLCD420B, and a MAXPORT. Thanks Shelato!

There are two components to the interface. One a Visual basic program that sends and receives commands to the cubloc. Two, the cubloc program that receives the commands, controls the cubloc and turns the outputs on and off.

The fully load version on the test stand. It runs wireless!!!!!!!! However, I’m tethered to the power supplies for the Linksys router and Cubloc power supply. Next weekend we go to full battery power.

The Maxport is sticking out the backend of truck connected to the Linksys router through the blue ethernet cable. 2 Green lights can been seen on the Cubloc. The LCD display is in the passanger window.
