The currently unnamed device–which is being called an “ultra-wide screen multitouch table exhibit exploring the electromagnetic spectrum”–is based around the company’s MT-50 multi-touch, multi-user table. Clearly this one is designed to be used by businesses more so than actual consumers (unless you’ve got a 20,000 square foot home just dying for a few new accessories), with a 16×5 aspect ratio and a display resolution of 2304×800. All told, it’s a 100″ surface with an 86″ viewable area, making it one of the largest contiguous multi-touch tables ever made.

Here’s a quick and dirty iPhone/iPod Touch hack for making your own iPhone/iPod Touch stylus using snap fasteners and dental floss as ingredients.

Most standard stylus pens won’t work with Apple’s capacitive screens, but this model seems to use the conductivity and flexibility of a snap fastener bound with dental floss to get the right feel and connection. Feel free to correct our thumbnail circuit punditry, but first check out the simple, cheap building of an iPhone stylus:

Multi-Touch DIY – How to Build a Multi-Touch Surface Computer!

Microsoft Surface may be an easy option for businesses to get a multi-touch surface computer but they did not invent it nor is it the only viable option to having one yourself.

The guys over at MaximumPC has done a fantastic job of documenting how to build a multi-touch surface computer all from scratch using open-source multi-touch software Touchlib. I find it facinating that the multi-touch is basically composed of IR LEDs, camera, and IR filter; it’s not much of a science at all nor new technology but it does, however, look tight in the eyes of a modder/hacker.

There are several different ways to make a multi-touch surface, but we’ll focus on the one that we employed: the FTIR screen. An FTIR (short for Frustrated Total Internal Reflection) setup involves three vital components: a sheet of transparent acrylic, a chain of infrared LEDs, and a camera with an IR filter. The LEDs are arranged around the outside of the sheet of acrylic so that they shine directly into the thin side surfaces.

SurfaceDJ for Microsoft’s Surface Multi-Touch Computer at Web 2.0 Expo 2009!

It’s been a long week as I was attending the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco and had to update a site for a client but here’s the first of many videos I took from the show.

This is actually at Microsoft’s booth, they were featuring their new multi-touch computer, the Microsoft Surface.

I am not usually a fan of Microsoft’s monopoly on operating systems but heck, I do really like this new Multi-Touch from Microsoft, especially this SurfaceDJ app that was being demoed here.

It’s basically a big, giant iPhone pretty much, but too bad it’s still only available for businesses.

The most interesting part that day wasn’t the Microsoft Surface itself but the DJ app on it, SurfaceDJ from VectorForm.

My HD camera was having some Mic problems but you can see this video illustrating the SurfaceDJ app in detail:

The SurfaceDJ lets you basically mix your own music, all without the traditional DJ equipment. A lot of my friends are DJs and this could come in handy for future DJs who could take advantage of the technology.

I dug a little further and found that they have this app for iPhone too already, the SurfaceDJ Lite (free version), and the SurfaceDJ pay version here.

G1 Hack – How to Turn your T-Mobile G1 Phone into a Multi-Touch Device!

Wow, here’s a cool little G1 hack that turns your T-Mobile G1 Android device into a multi-touch device.

You might void warranty but heck, it’s a G1 phone. I will be ashamed not to break warranty at cool hacks like this.

I moved my original multi-touch code back into the kernel, because it turns out that currently it’s a lot easier to patch the kernel and get a working Android system than it is to patch the Android java stack and get a working system. (The Android java stack that made it into the G1 was branched and polished long before the source code was released publicly, and the source code in git usually doesn’t run without problems due to being in a state of flux.) You can find the kernel patch to the synaptics touchpad driver here. Many thanks to zinx for helping to polish the kernel patch and figure out the best way to get mutitouch info into userspace.

Interactive Multi-Touch Mirror!

Here’s a really cool concept for a mirror, an interactive multi-touch mirror that lets you draw things, check photos, well, it’s basically a computer in the mirror.

The only downfall about this product I see is that people would rather sit than stand while using a multi-touch system but a great concept.

The cognitive machine that is your brain automatically deals with things like size and distance and perspective, a job it hopefully does fairly well, you don’t have to give a mirror’s reflection much thought. However, interacting with buttons and animation layered on your reflection and the world behind you is unlike any other touchscreen experience. This unexpectedness, to me, is precisely the allure of HCI and all things touch-capable.

Here’s a cool multitouch table for the Cityscape Abu Dhabi. It seems clear that more and more people are implementing the Multi-touch system to have the “innovative” tech look.

“NUI successfully conceptualized, designed, built and delivered a customized interactive multi-touch solution, which was demonstrated at Citscape Abu Dhabi 2008, the International Property Investment and Development event, in the United Arabic Emirates. Here’s a really cool interactive multi-touch LED floor. I wonder if they can turn this into an interactive game sorta like Nintendo Wii.

Sensacell’s latest contraption still manages to stand out by bringing back memories of when mouse trails really were the coolest thing about an operating system. Flashbacks aside, the installation — which is currently at the entrance to the Comunitat Valenciana in Spain — possesses over 1,000 interactive modules, each of which include capacitive sensors and a LED lighting system. The integrated tech enables it to recognize when someone is walking over it and consequently light up as if to leave an eye-catching LED trail of their path.

Microsoft Sphere for the Educational Market

Here’s a cool Multi-Touch Sphere thingee in development by Microsoft.

REDMOND, Wash.– A group of academics will be among the first people outside Microsoft to see Sphere, a spherical surface computer developed by Microsoft Research.

The sphere-shaped, multitouch computer is similar to the tabletop Surface computer that Microsoft announced last year after years in development. This incarnation, however, remains a project within Microsoft Research and the company has no current plans to bring it to market.

The university researchers are at Microsoft as part of its yearly Faculty Summit. Also at the event, Microsoft announced a series of tools for researchers, including a plug-in for Office that lets people embed a Creative Commons license directly into their Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.
