Today, I had the pleasure of talking to Joseph Scott, CEO of PhantomAlert.com over at CJ University Event in Santa Barbara. What impressed me the most wasn’t his products but his friendliness, I really like friendly people. I think when you pitch a product to bloggers, all you gotta do really is “be a nice guy”, Joseph is a perfect example. (Thanks again for your friendship, I highly appreciated.)

Anyways, Joseph’s PhantomAlert isn’t just all about friendliness, his software can run on all major GPS devices such as Garmin, TomTom, and Megellan.

What PhantomAlert will do is basically “notify” you of all major “police” hazards on the road including cop cars, motorcycle cops, red light speed cameras and lights, DUI checkpoints, and other hazardous road situations that are actually reported by regular people like you and me.

Anyways, Joseph is also going to have his PhantomAlert “Cop tracking system” available soon on cellphones like iPhones, Blackberries, and tons more. I really like this idea as this concept isn’t all that new to me anyways.

South Koreans have had this same technology for detecting red light speed cameras and cop cars for the last 4-5 years, I think this is the very first one in the U.S worth mentioning.

The service is completely free if you want to check the status online but you will have to pay about $100 for lifetime membership, still not too bad if you can avoid another ticket.

Of course, the best way is to simply avoid driving too fast and just drive slow like me. The only thing I am worried about is getting a ticket for driving like a grampa, oh well, this service might help me afterall. I will have to talk to Joseph about getting me a free lifetime membership for giving him some free online exposure.

In all, today was a great day, I met a lot of new people that could help catapult my business to a new level. Besides, I met Joseph Scott, what a great guy! Definitely recommend trying out his GPS “cop-tracking” services if you tend to be on the edge and get at least 1 traffic ticket per year. This could potentially save you from getting a ‘DUI’ too, not that I recommend you driving drunk unless you are good at it like me. :p

These days, there’s no reason to ever “lose” your child, especially with the number of GPS tracking devices out there today.

I was doing more research for my Palm Pre’s GPS tracking system on Twitter and found out that AmberAlert has just launched its hand-sized GPS tracking system GPS 2G, specifically for tracking your kids.

It’s rather pricey at $379.99 for one of these devices and $9.99/month for the most basic tracking but I think this could be the best investment for your kids, especially if you are always working and have no time to look over your child.

Let me put it bluntly, if your child goes on missing or gets kidnapped, you will have lost someone very valuable in your life.

If you can afford it, I highly suggest you to get one of these as insurance for your kids.

On top of tracking, you can also set “safe” zones so you will be alerted if your kids go out of the safe zone. Another great feature is that you can also monitor how fast your teenager is driving their car right after they get their license.

I know this might cause some privacy issues with your growing kids but until they are legal age of 18, you are still the one in charge.

Well, I digged a bit further with my Palm Pre GoogleMaps GPS tracking app and made a new app that will track your Palm Pre’s GPS location via Twitter.

This is a better way to keeping a record of where you have been traveling in the past with your Palm Pre.

Life Hack – How to Save Time using Mobile Internet and GoogleMaps!

Last night, I was cooking some great sirloin beef that I bought at Costco the other day. And of course, the sourdough bread I bought 2 weeks ago was too hard to eat. (I could have wacked someone in the head with the hard sourdough bread and killed him/her.)

Anyways, in order to search for a solution for my too-hard, outdated San Francisco’s genuine sourdough bread, I immediately launched my Opera Mini browser on my Blackberry in my kitchen.

Upon enter “How to revive bread” on Google, I immediately found couple articles and one told me to soak bread in water and put it in the oven at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes.

Well, it turns out I did “revive” my sourdough bread and was able to cook a full meal.

The point of story?

Mobile internet is helping each and every individual who use it. Of course, I could have simply went into my livingroom and search on Google but the point is that I didn’t need to and all that “information” I needed was right there in the palm of my hands, my Internet-enabled Blackberry.

If that doesn’t convince you, I can give you another story from the other day when I was helping my friend move stuff.

I was supposed to follow his car to his house but I got lost while on the Bay Bridge. Well, I was lucky that I had saved his home location as Favorites on my GoogleMaps (on my Blackberry).

I simply asked GoogleMaps to find the best direction from Bay Bridge (Current location using GPS) to his house and that did save me the headache of getting lost.

The day before, I was in Pier 39 in San Francisco, I needed to get some water but I didn’t want to get ripped off by buying water from one of the tourist shops. I simply looked up “liquor store” and walked to the liquor store about 3 blocks away. I saved about a dollar and also noted the liquor store for future visits to Pier 39.

That’s just 3 examples of how mobile internet could save you time and money while on the go. If I hadn’t had those tools on my Blackberry, it would have probably cost me a lot more time.

Here’s a cool hack that shows you how to install a GPS seamlessly into your Dell Mini Inspiron 9 netbook.

I started by tearing the Mini down and seeing if it was even possible. Luckily, there’s a bit of space around where the Bluetooth adapter is located. It wasn’t much, but it looked like enough, so I ordered the smallest USB GPS receiver I could find. It’s a nice unit with a SkyTraQ chipset and support for AGPS. Once I used the included utility to download an AGPS update into the unit, it gets a location fix in about five seconds after a reset.

Navevo has released their new GPS capable of helping disabled citizens more than your iPhone GoogleMaps. I guess the bad news is that this GPS is really custom-made for U.K. as of now and we probably won’t see them in the states. (but I might be wrong, please feel free to correct me as always)

This GPS’s distinguishing feature is that it displays many special parking spots, and 20,000 Blue Badge POIs as well as 60,000 other POIs. Navevo teamed up with PIE (Public Information Exchange) to help discover and add disabled parking lots to their GPS maps. These NAVTEQ maps cover all 150 major cities and towns in the UK, as well as the Republic of Ireland. Furthermore, the BBNav will come with a 6-month free trial of safety camera alerts and will retail in October for 200 Euros.

The only feature I think it’s kinda useless (or would be useless in America) is the disabled parking lots function as most public and private parking lots in America are mandated to have a handicap parking lot right in the front.

But I think it does have potential to blow up if they hook up with a insurance company and spread it like wildfires to disabled people all over the world.

GPS equipped Turtle Tracks Marijuana Fields!

Isiah Johnson of Chevy Chase, Maryland, was busted by a GPS equipped turtle, who is obviously good at finding his own stash to eat. (or do turtles smoke too?)

Too bad he isn’t a medical marijuana card holder living in San Francisco (he’d have been legally allowed to grow like 5-10 plants), he is stuck with Maryland’s gay laws and probably head to jail or probation at the least.

A Chevy Chase resident was arrested last week in connection with a marijuana field growing in Rock Creek Park south of the Maryland line.

Isiah Johnson, 19, a resident of the 2300 block of Washington Avenue, was charged July 30 with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute after United States Park Police discovered 10 marijuana plants growing in a remote part of the park.

iPhone Nike+ Interface Leaked!

Here’s some leaked pics of what the Nike+ would look like working with the iPhone. You do have to admit iPhone is useless for fast internet browsing on the go but it may proved to be a very good tool for running around like crazy and graphing out how you ran.

the biggest improvement over the old Nike system may be Google Maps support:

We don’t know just how robust the Nike+ maps support will be, but mapping routes directly on the iPhone could make for more organized training sessions. If only we had the coordination to use the iPhone’s touch interface while running.

Eee PC Hack – How to Hack your Internal Devices on an ASUS Eee PC!

Here’s a great wiki site showing you good information on how to hack the ASUS Eee PC including how to add a GPS unit without breaking your arm off.

There are several points on the motherboard where power can be draw, for devices requiring 3.3v or 5v. Ground is universal and allows for short wire runs. A diagram over the points can be found on the research page.

The signal wires thickness is 30 AWG and 24 AWG for the power and ground wires. The wire type is called wire wrap and used for prototyping and repair work. Mine is Tefzel insulated and made by Habia Cable. Some of the devices are held in place by double-sided 1 mm thick foam tape. To cover up and prevent shorts I used 3M Kapton 10 mm wide tape.

Although the dog tracking GPS system from Garmin looks to be unnecessary for tracking dogs, (maybe its main purpose is for hunting dogs) I can recall countless times when I lost my dog in my neighborhood, only to find him 20 minutes, happy after his little lone-trip.

Now, this dog tracking system can be great if you tend to lose your dog a lot.

The Astro GPS Dog Tracking System requires very little configuration straight out of the box, and is extremely simple to use. Once the transmitter and receiver acquire a GPS signal, the receiver automatically lets users know the location of their dog. Unlike old radio telemetry collars, the Astro features a dog page that shows the precise direction and distance to a dog – even indicating if it is running, on point, or treeing quarry – and does it all without the annoyance of beeper collars. With Seero, I guess you can even geo-map your movies. It’s interesting as this movie is based on San Francisco streets and I know where they shot it.

It’d be way cool if all new movies came out with a PiP screen of Google Maps showing the location. (maybe one day when Google starts buying theaters…)

I’m a huge fan of ‘the king of cool’ and of all movie car-chase scenes. I thought it would be great to mashup famous chases with their GPS tracks. Keep in mind some of the chases cut from one place to another…so I tried to be as accurate as possible. Enjoy!

Garmin, a popular GPS manufacturer, has just introduced Garmin Edge 705 GPS for bikes. The GPS system features the ability to monitor where you’ve gone by downloading data to your computer after your long cycle ride.

Looks great for people who are serious tracking their cycle data but if you just need a GPS, you could probably just stick a Blackberry with GPS and GoogleMaps to your bike using some clamps.

The Edge 705 combines (take a deep breath) GPS maps and navigation, heart rate, cadence and power output into a palm of your hand wireless unit. It can display up to 16 separate metrics during the ride and combined with the included software and web-based apps it becomes an incredible tool for social networking, exploration and serious training analysis.

Lol, this must be the most creative drawing idea I’ve seen in a while. Basically, you can read the excerpt, “I sent away a briefcase containing a GPS device with DHL. I gave them exact travel instructions, where to go and in what order. 55 days later the briefcase returned to Stockholm. Ths GPS automatically recorded the briefcase’s journey around the world. The information was downloaded to computer and gave me my drawing…”

Well, Sony PSP GPS dongle does look pretty impressive, now you have more reasons to mount it on your car besides the fact that in the US, laws were passed so you can mount your GPS.

Today Sony’s PSP guys gave us a heads-up on what’s next for the portable. Two years after launching in Japan, we’re finally going to get GPS action for the PSP on this side of the pond. Happily, it looks like we’ll be getting a much better package than Japan for a change.

Here’s Dash, a company that makes in-car navigation opening their API for developers to develop apps for their navigation system.

Sounds like a great idea, it will work a lot better if they offered some prizes like Google (GOOG) has been doing with their Android and Apple (APPLE) with their iPhone.

Maybe I will apply for an API so I can integrate SiteHoppin into their Dash navigation systems and people will be site hopping on the go.

Tomorrow morning at O’Reilly’s Where 2.0 conference we’ll be announcing another first for the GPS category. We’re opening up our service to enable other companies and developers to provide timely and relevant Internet content to the car. Our goal is to get drivers the answers they need every day. We call these new partner-created applications, DashApps.

Wow, now you can use njection.com to find out where the speed camera traps are. Since I live in San Francisco and there are so many speed traps everywhere, I did a search for my zip code and that’s what you see in the above screenshot. Pretty accurate too as I can verify some of the speed traps from back of my head.

You can also download this information to your GPS device, how cool is that?

Shannon Atkinson launched Njection.com as a place for gearheads to shoot the breeze about anything and everything auto-related. It wasn’t long before he sensed a theme in the posts. “One of the biggest topics on the site became speed traps and cameras,” Atkinson told us. “People want to know about those whether they’re a truck driver, a road warrior or just someone who wants to drive without worrying about it.”

So Atkinson added Speedtrap, a feature that combines drivers’ tips with Microsoft Virtual Earth to identify speed traps – either a real, live cop with a radar gun or one of those damned cameras – throughout the U.S. There’s even a few foreign cities, such as London, Toronto and Rome.

Now, the information can be downloaded directly to portable navigation devices from Garmin, Mio, TomTom and others via Njection.com so that drivers can pinpoint speed traps on a given route. Atkinson says the identity of Njection’s many speed-trap tipsters is kept confidential, and they include more than a few police officers who like the site because what “they’re mostly interested in is getting people to drive safely.”

BMW Adds Full Internet Access to Its iDrive

BMW adds full internet access to their iDrive. This is something I have been thinking about, putting a web browser into the car navigation. If everything goes as planned, we should have some people “Site Hopping” while they are stuck at the light and make us couple million bucks.

I think this is a smart move by BMW as some car manufacturer is going to put that web browser on the car navigation. Why not? The screen’s there, the computer is there, all you need to do is stick a broadband modem.

Watch as every other car manufacturer starts putting internet available on the navigation LCDs.

BMW will introduce full onboard Internet access that will allow drivers to copy maps and other information directly to their navigation systems.

The service will operate via an EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) mobile connection, currently the fastest universal mobile connection available.

DIY iPhone HACK – How to make an iPhone LoJack and chart your location using Google Maps!

Here’s a great hack on how to make an iPhone LoJack and also be able to chart your location using GoogleMaps.

Basically the hack connects a Twitter account so your iPhone “twitts” your iPhone’s location at set intervals. The “twitts” are basically GoogleMaps URLs that locates the GPS location of the iPhone.

How cool it that? Pretty awesome I’d say.

If you’re traveling across the country, change your start interval to 15 minutes or a half hour and use a public Twitter account. (Remember to reboot after making changes to the Launch Daemon). Your friends will be able to track your progress using the Google Maps URL that’s tinyURL’ed into each tweet.

Here’s a good instructable on how to build a cheap bluetooth audio for your GPS. If your GPS doesn’t already support bluetooth (I believe most don’t), this is a great cheap way to get all those audible directions into just the driver’s ears, not everyone in the car.

I needed a way to hear my cheap a$$ GPS under the helmet on my motorcycle and didn’t wanna fork over 2x the price for a “motorcycle ready” GPS device so I made it myself.
This may be interesting to bikers a well!

Well, here’s a cool little hack for anyone who’s interested in building a GPS tracker for fun. Although I’d rather stick to my GoogleMaps on my Blackberry, this is good info for anyone who wants to build a custom app.

The Open GPS Tracker is a small device which plugs into a $20 prepaid mobile phone to make a GPS tracker. The Tracker responds to text message commands, detects motion, and sends you its exact position, ready for Google Maps or your mapping software.
