The pet tornado

As a lot people know a tornado is a force to be reckoned with, it can destroy buildings and pull trees out of the ground, but it can also be tamed like this one here. The tube simply requires shaking for the power of the tornado to be seen there right in front of you, it’s cool but do not open the lid!

Modern cars are so bland these days, whatever happened to the fins and spoilers that they used have? Well there is not much that we can about that or is there! Skateboard DIY – How to Make a Propeller Powered Skateboard!

Well, you thought this wasn’t possible but it is! It’s a propeller powered skateboard that will propel you forward with the use of wind-power. Now, I’d like to see this concept applied to snowboards, that might kick start a new sport called “cross-country snowboarding”.

Skateboarding gets more exciting as I strap a model airplane engine to the end of a skateboard.

I had a great time with this project. It was rather easy to put together and a whole lot of fun to test. I look forward to playing with it more and may update the video with more antics in the future.

New Years 2009 Resolution – Use Greener Gadgets!

Well, for the year 2009, one of my new years resolution is to use greener gadgets or in other words, stuff that can make our earth better.

Here’s a list of greener gadgets you might want to consider for the next year:

For personal use:

Have an iPhone? Don’t forget to get one of these solar iPhone chargers that doubles as protection too.

I am sure you’ve probably seen this Solio solar charger before, it can power your PDA, iPod, MP3, and other small gadgets whereever you go and fits in your pocket.

Here’s a solar battery charger that I am sure “everyone” can take advantage of. Replace all your akaline batteries with earth-friendly solar Ni-Cd batteries. I will personally get this one myself and save some extra watts for mother nature next year.

Do you use a lot of public transportation to get to and from work? Well, you definitely need to think about upgrading your laptop bag for this solar backpack which will charge your gadgets while on the go. For high-class, check this solar backpack out too.

For once in your lifetime, buy an eco-friendly MP3/video player from eMotion, not iPod, it’s much cheaper too.

If you don’t really listen to MP3s but listen to radio AM/FM all day long, this solar radio might be just for your next year’s greener New Year’s resolution.

Are you one of those folks with who “still” talk on the cellphone while driving? Take my advice and stick this solar bluetooth hands-free kit for your car, you will save a bunch of money on tickets plus energy.

I highly recommend not driving too fast on the highway but if you own a sports car, you will get pulled over more often than you’d like. Get a solar radar detector and tell the officer that at least you are saving energy if you do get pulled over. (I am sure the judge will understand it too)

For Home Improvement:

Try Malibu Solar Powered Metal Tier Light Kit w/ Remote Panel from Amazon. These solar outdoor lights are great since the solar panel is separated from the lights themselves and won’t look awkward like some of those solar lights you see at Home Depot.

The Solar Vent is great for any RVs, cars, and any small storage rooms where there’s a lot of heat and humidity. Vent out some air free using couple of these nifty solar vents.

Do you have a floodlight that uses your PG&E electricity? Well, get rid of it (sell it on eBay) and replace it with this solar floodlight that will keep saving you money in the long run plus save the precious earth.

This awesome waterproof solar panel can provide a good amount of 12V DC power to any of your garden gadgets. Get one and stick it right outside your garage. Heck, it probably can re-charge your car battery too.

For emergencies:

If you live in an area where a god-struck emergency can happen (such as hurricanes and earthquakes), make sure you are equippred with green gadget such as this crank-powered radio/flashlight. You never know when that once-in-a-lifetime earthquake will hit you but better to be ready than sorry.

Well, you get the idea. Next year you buy a gadget, see if there’s an eco-friendly alternative before you enter your credit card information.

Check out this really cool DIY on how to make a vertical wind turbine. This thing can produce some good amount of electricity for under $300.

With this one I am hoping to get the 100 watts.

Here is how I did it.

First we need:
–5 pvc tube. size 3″X10′ (hardware store)$48

–3 bike wheels. size 12″ (junk yard or ask your kid to use their bikes for a minute) maybe $5

–Ametek38 volt (ebay or surplus store) $60 (a problem with ametek, it needs 700 rpm to reach 14.1volt.

–Or buy windblue alternator (ebay) $250 it will only need 200prm to reach 14.1 volt

–1 square foot 1″ plywood or anything 12″ diameter (laying around)

– 3 X 2×4 X 12′ studs (from lumber store)$11

I am not going to name the tools, but I used the usual tools.

Underwater Turbine for Water Power from Oxford University!

Engineers at Oxford University have come up with a new innovative concept for underwater turbines that use 60% less manufacturing and 40% less in maintenance costs.

This type of new underwater generator involves the THAWT device. I believe these types of underwater turbines and ocean wind turbines combined will soon be everywhere in the ocean to generate over 90% of our electricity.

The THAWT is considered to be a “second generation” turbine as opposed to the first generation models that resembled windmills. It consists of a cylindrical rotor that rolls around its long axis with the flow of water, instead of turning at right angles. Promising to be more efficient and powerful than other underwater turbines, each THAWT is predicted to produce 12 megawatts of energy – enough to power 12,000 family homes and significantly more than other underwater turbines of today.

I have always been fond of different windsurfing gadgets people bring to have fun over at Ocean Beach, here’s how to make your own skateboard-turned-windsurf thingee.

If this goes on sand, I might build one.

Here’s my contribution to the movement, a land windsurfer with a 3.6 meter lugsail.

It sails just exactly like a regular windsurfer. Sail tuning is a little different, due to having four corners to adjust rather than the old three. Study up on lugsail tuning.

Here’s a cool tent that can power your gadgets through its wind turbine and solar panels at the top of the tent.

Although this concept looks to be for commercial use right now, they should really make a mini-version for consumers like me who take their tent to the beach. Perhaps some bigger, lighter solar panels covering the whole 1/3 of the tent might be good for solar beach laptoping.

you’ll be able to power your phone at a dedicated renewable energy tent. Built by Orange, the ‘recharge Pod’ is a seven-metre high tent with 500 watt solar panels and a 500 watt wind turbine on the roof that’ll generate electricity for dead mobile phones.
