The results on this table are rather magnificent, I didn’t know you could do that with old wood.

There’s a lot of wood out in the world free for the taking — in dumpsters, back alleys, vacant lots, abandoned buildings, recycling yards, and architectural salvage centers. Most wood, if free from rot, is just as strong, durable, and good to use as new wood, once you sand off the weathering. This table was made from all salvaged wood — both dimensional lumber and plywood, mostly taken from decaying buildings in and around Hale County, Alabama

We all use some canned foods from time to time. And we all probably use empty cans for one purpose or another. This instructable shows how to decorate cans to be used as organizers for pencils, pens, paint brushes, etc. It’s a simple thing to do, and children would especially have fun making their creations.

Perhaps recycling has not been done often enough in our world, especially those who have to constantly fix their house and throw away broken things.

Well, if your house gate ever breaks and you can use it anymore, you might want to consider converting it into an outdoor table. As seen in the above pics, the steps don’t seem too complicated, simply get 4 legs on it.

The gates at the side of our house succumbed to a big wind storm recently. The cause was ground rot on the posts, but that meant that most of the wood was still in pretty good condition despite being over thirty years old. Instead of throwing it out my wife suggested recycling it to make an outdoor table.

This one’s for all those ladies out there who have been traveling often, learn how to make/recycle hotel magnetic key jewelry! I know most hotels throw away millions of these plastic magnetic keys on a daily basis, here’s a great way to help the environment while making you look more beautiful.

We cut the cards into various small shapes. I then used a leather punch (because it was handy and I didn’t feel like messing with the drill) to make holes in the top of the shapes. We then attached the jump rings and ear wires with needle nose pliers. Voila! Custom jewelry!

Few things on this earth become as cluttered, dirty and full of mysteries as the desks where we work all day. From shriveled lettuce fragments from a 2005 sandwich still stuck between the keys, to a curious 5” floppy disk full of unknown data that has been rolled over by the chair wheels a dozen times, there are all sorts of things buried within and around our workspaces. This is particularly true for most who work from home – as the desk constantly serves not only as a place for getting work done, but often as a table, shelf, pantry, and sometimes, a bed.

Every now and then, people bother to actually clean out their desks and get rid of all the miscellaneous bits of computer parts and office supplies for which they have absolutely no use. Massive trash bags, big enough for Dexter Morgan to fill with a dismembered 32 year-old man, get filled to the brim with random work-related bits of forgotten importance. But why junk all that stuff? There are a bunch of things you can do with all those pieces-parts – and this article aims to provide you with a few ideas. And no, I wouldn’t suggest re-shingling your roof with plastic jewel cases and gelatinous bottles of White Out. Come on, you at least have a little bit of class.

CDs

CDs may be the most common throw-away item. Everyone has a spindle worth of discs they forgot to label, discs that burned improperly, or a drawer full of leftover AOL free trials they got in the mail once a week from 1997-2001. Here are some technical, geeky, crafty, practical and stupid things to do with old CDs or DVDs:

Detach large Christmas lights (the old school fat ones like your grandpa still uses) from their string, put on the CD, and then reattach the light. It makes a neat glowing/reflecting effect.
Trace a guitar pick onto a CD and cut it out. Brand new guitar pick.
String a few together and hang it outside for a quality hillbilly prism ornament.
Stick them on fence posts to scare away birds from your garden – they hate the reflection.
There’s always the good old coaster and Frisbee options.
If they have printed labels on one side, cut them up and make a mosaic.
Smash your mosaic, and glue the pieces to a Styrofoam ball. Disco away.
Practice your ninja skills by throwing them like a shuriken at friends and family members.
They make pretty cool candle coasters.
Install a clock mechanism in the center hole, Sharpie on some numbers and you’ve got a sweet nerd clock.
Use your nerd clock to gauge when your frozen pizza is done baking, and then cut the pie with a disc edge.

Floppy & Zip Disks

No doubt you’ve got a few floppies still lying around, too. If you don’t, I have plenty, and you can have them. You could back up your hard drive or something, 1.4MB at a time, if you wanted to. The Zip disk could still be mildly useful, if only any computer on earth actually had a Zip drive…

Tile the floor in a small room with them, you nerd.
Go to this site and learn how to make a bag/purse/man sack out of floppies (http://www.instructables.com/id/Floppy-Disk-Bag/) – Just don’t give it to your mom for mother’s day.
Pop out the little metal circle part from the middle of a bunch of disks, string some cord through it (or some SATA cable if you want to be super geeky) and make a belt. Or a necklace. Or a noose.
Zip disks make great props for under the leg of that wobbly chair or table.
Fashion a bunch of them together to make a square box – you can put pencils in it! Hey, it’ll help with the clutter. We’re cleaning here, after all.
Same concept as above – but make a photo cube.
Use them to scratch food out of a casserole dish. It works. I swear.
If you have a 5” floppy, use it as a mount for some sort of art project.
Make a bracelet out of the insides of a 5” disk. Then, down a bottle of Hello Kitty pills and head to a rave in the most dilapidated building you can find.

Laptops

Aside from taking old laptops to sit on and keep the chilly bleacher metal off your bum at your son’s tee ball game, there are a handful of things you can do with them that are less ridiculous.

Make a DIY digital photo frame. Start by taking the LCD off of the rest of the laptop (which usually only requires removing one ribbon cable). Remove the plastic around the LCD, assemble a mounting board and mat around it, then glue it on. Reattach the cable to the rest of the laptop. Attach something to make a stand. If you have a screensaver program that links to Flickr or some other photo source, it’s all that much easier because you never really have to touch the thing. It’s boss.
Screw with it. Replace the case with a wooden one. Do something silly.
If it’s not a total pile, turn it into a file server. It costs less to power all day than a desktop.
Turn it into a hotspot and boost your router signal. The method depends on your OS, so look it up yourself.
Put some wheels on it and use it as a skateboard. Wear pads, you’ll get hurt.
Create a DIY hobo digital projector. Get the screen, a cooling fan, and an old style overhead projector. Check the bottom corner of the supply closet for one of those, behind the mop and Janet from accounting’s underwear. Strip down the LCD until you’re left with just the screen itself (just the black sheet and its attached VGA/DVI components). Lay it on the glass top of the overhead projector. Attach it however you need to along with the cooling fan. Connect the inputs to a video source, and you’ll have a big, digital-ish projection.
Use it as a second monitor.
Put it on your stove top and use it as a skillet to fry an egg. Only if it has a metal shell, though. I mean, you can melt it everywhere if you want…

Printers

Okay fine, there is only one suggestion for printers…

Hollow it out and plant flowers in it. They become excellent planters, especially the all-in-ones.

Pencils

Make a little fence for your plants in your printer planter box. Or in an actual planter box.
Glue a bunch together side-by-side and make a placemat or trivet.
Apparently moths hate pencil shavings. Grind them all up and put them in your closet. They will work like moth balls – but with a different, less offensive, but still unappealing odor.
Support a small plant.
The graphite in a pencil is a dry lubricant, so if you have a small motor, lock, latch, or other mechanical object that is stuck, rub the graphite all over it to loosen it up.

Other Crap

Clean out the junk in your keyboard cracks with the sticky end of a Post-It.
Use Post-Its as cable wraps for all the cords under the desk.
Be one of those creepy old people in a dark room full of decaying Asian home furnishings and antique radios that hordes every piece of garbage they’ve ever possessed.
Repeatedly stick and remove any form of tape to a laptop keyboard that has hand soil marks. It will slowly lift them without you scratching away at your hardware. (That’s what she said!)
Insulate something with mouse pads.
You can tie up just about anything with a computer cable.

Use paper clips as Christmas ornament hooks, or as a zipper pull. Then go out to dinner at a fancy restaurant. Pop your collar while you’re at it.
Large pencil erasers are great door stops.
An old mouse or crappy computer speaker makes a good key hider.
An old iPod makes a swell cigarette case.
The circuit sheet from a keyboard can make a very snazzy wallet.
You can melt old crayons and make nice art that will look much like oil painting. Touch to flame, dab on paper. Touch to flame, dab on paper. Touch to flame, dab on paper. Touch to flame, dab on paper. Touch to flame…

Clearly you can find a use for anything if you try to. It’s certainly easier to throw everything away, but when you can have mildly tacky things all over the place that you created with would-be trash, people just may think you are the most clever Jenny on the block. You may even be able to fashion yourself something useful, which is the true spirit of DIY. Though most of the ideas on this list were small, they are all feasible. Try some out, put your innovative mind to work and see if you can’t transform some of that desk clutter into a more creative form of clutter.

I personally own bunch of small jar-like candle holders that I’ve bought from IKEA at a dollar each. After seeing this eco DIY, I am having some regrets as I have many old jars laying around that I could have used to make this candle lantern that looks awfully awesome. Now, I wouldn’t hang it from anything but I can just let the candle jars sit on my dining table. It’d still look classy and nice.

During the summer I love to linger outside with friends as the day makes its slow fade into night. A bottle of wine, a few good nibbles, and flickering candlelight sets the mood for lots of gabbing and laughing. I have a big collection of votive holders leftover from our wedding, but I’ve been wanting to hang candle lanterns around our deck.

It seems that more and more people these days have decided to re-use, recycle, and re-make cool artistic objects. Today’s subject is on how to make a wine bottle moss garden using your empty wine bottles and moss collected from your nearest forest. I think this is a great idea as you can keep most of that moss contained in the wine bottle while the moss will keep growing nicely.

So I did my best to replicate her art using my own medium: wine. My five-year-old son and I went into the woods last fall and collected two kinds of moss. He made his own terrarium in a glass cookie jar; I made mine in a bottle of Domaine Tempier rose 2007, my favorite rose from last summer. Unlike most wine bottles, rose bottles are clear to show off the eye-popping color of the wine. This also makes them better terrariums!

One thing I don’t like about inkjet printer companies such as HP (although I love their products) is that ink itself can be more costly than the printer itself. No matter what, HP isn’t going to make a self-filling inkjet system as it’s going to take a big bite out of their ink sales.

Don’t worry though, there’s a step-by-step guide you can follow to accomplish this so you never have to buy new ink ever!

It beats me why CIS systems are so expensive, the ozi exchange doesn’t help but even so…. I was quoted AU$875.00 INC GST for a CIS kit (this includes some ink that I don’t want anyway). I could probably have imported a kit myself for half this amount but even this is expensive.
It took me a week and 5 versions of the prototype to figure it out but I’ve now printed a dozen perfect prints using a CIS which costs under $20 in parts and under 2 hours to build. The proof of concept prototype is not pretty but it works. My house now looks even more like a war zone, I look like I’ve been finger painting and people keep laughing at my creation – but it is all worth it.

Did I mention it’s super easy to make? I originally found this idea at Thingiverse.com, where Erik Skiff whipped up a pretty cool acrylic stand. I didn’t have any acrylic and more importantly I didn’t have a lazer cutter make the cuts, so I did it on cardboard. I modified the design a little so the pattern would fit on a regular letter sized sheet of paper.

here’s an awesome DIY that shows you how to make a concrete lightbulb wall hook that you can make from used lightbulbs and make your home looks even more stylish with greyed-out lightbulbs that can hold a lot of pounds.

I’ve been playing around, trying to make a concrete lightbulb. Why? Because I find the contrast of blending a new material like concrete in an everyday shape like a lightbulb to be a great design element. So while messing around with these guys, I realized this would be a great excuse to drive lag bolts into my wall for hooks. By embedding a lag bolt into the concrete lightbulb, I could make a wall hook that was useful enough to handle anything I wanted to hang off it. Thus this project was born.

DIY Beer R2D2 Serves Beer!

Looks like someone overly zealous about Star Wars have made a cool DIY Beer R2D2. Now, this one uses a Heineken can but I am sure you can use the bigger version, like a real keg, to make a functional Beer R2D2. Anyone up for the challenge?

What is Beer2-D3 made from?

Beer2’s technical specs:
Head – 1945 chrome BLC utility light shell.
Eye - vintage movie camera lens w/adjustable spring-loaded aluminum casing.
Body – 4.7 liter “adult soda” mini-keg.
Legs – propane tank valve handles, brass spacers, drilled-out washers, pair of aluminum Lady Josephine shoe butler (wall-mounted shoe shine holders).
Feet/base – 3 mini bread loaf pans, lamp hardware and a 1/2″ precision drilled aluminum base plate.
+assorted nuts, bolts, screws and, of course – lockwashers!

Dirt-Powered Alarm Clock!

We did see the dirt-powered soil lamp earlier, here’s another dirt-powered device, it’s an alarm clock that can be powered via dirt and you can even grow some nice fairway grass in it.

This the called the timeless garden and it runs mud or rather the chemical reaction between the mud and the metal casing inside the clock, how good is that it just doesn’t get any better than that for alarm clocks anyway. The actual body is made from two recycled plastic bottles.

I own a bunch of old dress shoes that I want to throw away but I do have a lot of attached memories such as my first boots at my first job after college. Well, the answer is clear and you don’t have to throw them away!

Cut the back and use them as in-home “luxury” slippers. What a great idea, I am gonna do this today, you should too and send me pics of your new slippers to zedomax [at] gmail dot com.

step 1 materials
1.Old boots 2.Strong scissors or sharp knife 3.Glue

step 2 cutting the top of
Remove the laces.(on the photo i didn’t because i made this instructable after the shoes,on the pic are my newest boots.) I didn’t , but you could mark where you wanne cut.…

step 3 glue it together
Put the laces in and try to get a nice fit and tie the laces. They should fit perfect if you’ve worn them to work. Glue the watershield together so it won’t com loose anymo…

I’ve seen a rise of homes made with used shipping containers and I have to say, this “was” a redneck practice that has turned into a great way for architects to develop new self-sustaining, green homes. Now, you will have to just buy a lot of acres of land and move your home (containers) to where ever you want to be.

The best examples that explain his creativity are the Bunny Lane, his own home built with a 19th century clapboard cottage inside an industrial hanger, and the Push Button House, which takes just 90 seconds to expand to reveal a five-room home.

Here’s an awesome idea for re-using your old wine corks into placecard holders. I can even see this being used for something else such as your business cards.

Simply cut a slit in your wine cork and cut the bottom off so it won’t move.

If you like, you can hot glue a magnet strip to the bottom of the cork placecard holder. If your table happens to be metal, this will keep it in place and weighted down. If not, you can slip an adhesive magnet under your table cloth to make sure it stays in place.

Have a geeky girlfriend who enjoys more time tinkering with the solder and circuits than makeup? Well, even if your gf doesn’t, here’s some really stylish jewelry you can buy for her, all made from recycled computer parts. It reminds me of a movie with RFID tags that go on your neck… well, looks great though.

My art comes from tedious work. I do not purchase these pieces!!!! I rip apart used electronic devises in order to make my jewelry. Then cut different shapes from them. I spend many hours sanding and polishing them to the finished product you see below.

How would you like to sit on your old jeans that have been rejuvenated back into your livingroom as a sofa?

A Japanese company is doing exactly this, you should note it costs about $400 for them to make you one, but I don’t see why not you can’t do this yourself on your spare time either.

This concept may seem to be a rather strange idea, after denim is not usually associated with furnishings, but in Japan the re-using of materials is a big thing and denim is coming through a good hard wearing and stylish covering for furniture. It takes three pairs of jeans to make a denim stool, but don’t worry you have to provide your own jeans for the purpose!

If you are into growing plants (not that kind hopefully unless you have a license for it in CA), you might want to learn how to make seedling pots using newspaper.

I tried the drinking glass newspaper pots (too big), the origami newspaper pots (too big and had to think too hard), and the toilet roll paper pots (good but didn’t start collecting soon enough). So, duh, I just made tiny versions of the drinking glass pots with (don’t tell anyone) a little piece of tape per pot.
