Yes it has finally happened, an entire design team has got together and redesigned the cardboard box, but not for the homeless people to have somewhere safe and secure to sleep, oh no! This design makes the humble cardboard box into a suite.

Each box, sorry I mean suite, comes with a fluffy pillow, LED’s and cardboard artwork on the walls! Unfortunately it appears that the designers have either made is mistake with their measurements or there is just a serious design flaw as only the upper body fits into the suite, no it is a box!

These are like something that you find on Mission Impossible or some other technical related film that uses solar power to run, in fact these little cars recently took five days to travel from New York to Texas, and it just took five days!

There are no batteries, just a tiny solar panel that powers up the motor and allows it to zoom along the road at deaf defying speeds.

This little car comes ready assembled and so it ready to go, so long as there is a little bit of sunshine to get the wheels going.

This is a very interesting model that shows anyone who is interested in science, exactly how hydrogen fuel cells work.

It may be a model but the idea is good as the small parts are easy to handle, the system uses either solar or wind power to convert water into hydrogen, this is then stored in specially designed cartridges and it is these that power the car, it’s no racing car but the power is enough to move the car.

What Kinds of Solar Power Incentives are Available in the U.S.?

Over the years, you have seen your power bills increase for a variety of reasons. Sources are inconsistent, and methods to generate power are becoming more expensive. Ultimately, many of the resources we use are
non-renewable.

Coal, gas and oil are finite commodities. To encourage people to reduce their dependency upon non-renewable types of power, the U.S. government initiated a number of tax incentives for using solar power when it introduced the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

This legislation helped to extend several “green power” incentives that were originally launched in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

Currently, the government offers a 30 percent tax credit to consumers for installing solar energy systems in their homes. This credit is available through December 31, 2016. The types of systems eligible for credit
include systems that power solar electricity as well as solar water heaters.

For example, if you choose to have solar panels installed on your roof or another location on your property this year, you will receive a credit representing 30 percent of the panels’ cost and installation fees when you
file federal income taxes for 2010.

If you plan to install a solar-powered water heater, the heater must be certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation, or a similar organization sanctioned by your home state. Also, at least 50 percent of the energy that will be used to heat your residence’s water must be solar energy.

In addition to tax credits available from the federal government, individual states offer many different types of enticements for the installation of solar power systems. The Database of State Incentives for
Renewables and Efficiency website, dsireusa.org, includes listings of renewable energy incentives on a state-by-state basis.

Depending upon the state in which you live, incentives for installing solar power may include income tax credits, as well as property tax credits and even rebates on approved items.

If you own a company and are considering adding solar power to your business property, there are many federal and state-based incentives. Many counties and cities offer their own rewards for companies that “go green” with solar energy.

DIY Hybrid Motorcycle Gets 214MPG going 55MPH! [Eco]

As an avid motorcyclist, I don’t really worry about my gas too much as it gets as much as or better than most hybrid cars at 55MPG+, but this inventor decided to make motorcycles even more efficient by focusing on aero-dynamics. Based on his studies, 90% of drag at 55MPH is caused by air, not your wheels. So the above design was born, which gets 214MPG going 55MPH!

Now, I don’t see how I could ride that thing and look cool but I guess the point is about going far here. That’s 214 miles per gallon! If I took a trip from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe (which is about 300 miles), that means I just need about 1.5 gallons. At current price of about $3/gallon, it will cost me $4.50 for a one-way trip. WOW!

Talk about efficiency, we need all the motor companies talking to this guy, ALREADY! Let’s begin the new age of more efficient cars/bikes with zero drag!

If you start tot think about it you will see much more potential to make aerodynamic improvements on a motor bike as on a car or a bicycle.

The cyclist lacks the power to reach a cruising speed where almost all resistance he meets is induced by aerodynamic drag.

The car has a much bigger frontal area but a much better streamline and its higher weight increases rolling resistance, therefore the rolling resistance is still a major factor at 55mph.

The average motorbike though is relatively light and has a very bad aerodynamic shape, at 55mph 90% of all resistance is due to aerodynamic drag and only 10% to rolling resistance. Reducing air resistance on a motorbike is very effective.

Not only does it convert water to hydrogen, it stores the hydrogen efficiently in solid matter. This means that we could possibly forego gas stations in the future, perhaps just dump some water into your hydrogen-powered car. Exciting!

Named HYDROFILL(TM) unveiled at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The small desktop
device simply plugs into the AC, a solar panel or a small wind turbine, automatically extracts hydrogen from its water tank and stores it in a solid form in small refillable cartridges. The cartridges contain metallic alloys that absorb hydrogen into their crystalline structure, and release it back at low pressures, removing concerns about storing hydrogen at high pressure. This storage method also creates the highest volumetric energy density of any form of hydrogen storage, even higher than liquid hydrogen. Unlike conventional batteries, these cartridges carry more energy capacity, are cheaper, and do not contain any environmentally-harmful heavy metals.

My mom has a rather large collection of Classic vinyl records, she practically owns the whole Classic genre. In the 80s, my mom used to run a Record store, think of it as a mini-version of Tower Records. (I am just glad she profited off that and got out before CDs became popular.)

Anyways, if you are like my mom who loves these vinyl records and still swear by them, you probably want to stop reading here. For anyone else who wants to re-use your vinyl records into something more useful, how about turning it into classy room dividers for your roommate’s open room and you are tired of watching him get naked.(*sick joke*) (Or perhaps you are not tired of watching her! I heard in some European cultures such as France, women are more free when it comes to undressing.)

Old vinyl LPs! Initially they tried painting the records but weren’t satisfied with the results so they resorted to contact paper. We’ve seen the divider close-up and the contact paper does NOT look like contact paper – it looks really finished and polished. We like that this room divider allows you to peek through the two spaces it divides – living room and tv space. Perfect repurposing!

Recycle DIY – How To Make a Room Divider Using Old Vinyl Records!

The scientists at Sandia National Laboratories have found a way to recycle CO2 (carbon dioxide) into energy using the sun. Of course, it’s true that plants and trees have been doing this for thousands of years, turning carbon dioxide into our breathable oxygen. I think could be definitely worthwhile to keep a watch on. Who knows, we might have cars in the future that literally run off human breath. By then, we should also have cars that run purely on solar power so, more the merrier!

The machine is designed with a chamber on each side. One side is hot, the other cool. Running through the center is a set of 14 Frisbee-like rings rotating at one revolution per minute. The outer edge of each ring is made up of an iron oxide composite supported by a zirconium matrix. Scientists use a solar concentrator to heat the inside of one chamber to 1,500 º C, causing the iron oxide on one side of the ring to give up oxygen molecules. As the affected side of the ring rotates to the opposite chamber, it begins to cool down and carbon dioxide is pumped in. This cooling allows the iron oxide to steal back oxygen molecules from the CO₂, leaving behind carbon monoxide. The process is continually repeated, turning an incoming supply of CO2 into an outgoing stream of carbon monoxide.

Energy is expensive here in Brazil so I decided to save some money by making a Solar Water Heater. In Brazil water is usually heated instantly with 5000 watts of electricity in the shower head. This is the same amount of electricity as running your microwave for 1 hour to water for you 15 minute shower, or turning on 50 one hundred watt light bulbs at the same time. Needless to say, it really adds up on your electric bill (and is also a little scary).

I wanted to do it cheaply. In Brazil copper is very expensive so I made it with PVC. I was able to come up with a cheap back up heater for cold days – a $30 ‘bucket heater’ with a built in thermostat.

PVC is not the best conductor and it does have temperature limitations. So I did come with some ideas as how to make it work.

With so many things happening to our world right now including global warming (it’s REAL now…) and our current consumption of earth’s limited resources, it makes complete sense to build yourself DIY solar panels so you can power your consumer electronics or even add to the energy mass.

This setup has advantages and disadvantages.

Brian Campbell has indeed perfected the art of making a bike trailer home as seen here his DIY Bike Trailer Home for sale with fabricated insulation for the most awesome rest virtually anywhere his bike goes.

Brian has perfected the fabrication of an all-weather enclosure that is light, insulated, very stable, and road worthy. This model is 8′ x 4′ and weighs only 80 pounds. It has a spacious interior that fits a sleeping adult (or two?), has many interior shelves, and is priced to sell (he’s asking $1,950 but says he’ll take offers). He can modify the hitch custom for any bicycle.

Certainly this will inspire others to create some more all-weather bike trailer home for those long trips without breaking your bank on hotel stays.

Here’s a great way to make completely natural and organic hair gel out of Aloe Vera and Agar Agar, a substance from seaweed. I have to really try this, it looks pretty good. Well, if you do try it, let me know how you like it and if the hair gel stays on bright and long.

Here is something that should be useful for bathrooms in our homes. The toilet is known to be one of the causes for wasted water and the one which escalates our water bill. This could be due to leaks or some defect. But now, all you have to do is attach this device called the H2Orb from AquaOne Technologies.

Simply attach it directly to the water valve behind the toilet and when it spots a leak, it shuts off the water and alerts the user of the leak with an alarm and icon via the featured LCD screen. The whole system operates on a single 3V lithium coin cell battery.

Here’s a great way to make a table using recycled wood. When I get a big house, I will certainly make one myself. (and upload me doing so on YouTube)

The results on this table are rather magnificent, I didn’t know you could do that with old wood.

There’s a lot of wood out in the world free for the taking — in dumpsters, back alleys, vacant lots, abandoned buildings, recycling yards, and architectural salvage centers. Most wood, if free from rot, is just as strong, durable, and good to use as new wood, once you sand off the weathering. This table was made from all salvaged wood — both dimensional lumber and plywood, mostly taken from decaying buildings in and around Hale County, Alabama

I really love it when people make things like this out of stuff that would go into your recycling bin, a pencil holder made using old tin cans and grout! Brilliant! Keep up the great work and reduce our carbon footprint!

We all use some canned foods from time to time. And we all probably use empty cans for one purpose or another. This instructable shows how to decorate cans to be used as organizers for pencils, pens, paint brushes, etc. It’s a simple thing to do, and children would especially have fun making their creations.

I remember when I lived in South Korea for a year couple years back, there used to be a bunch of bars where the walls were pasted with DIY newspaper wallpapers. Of course, they looks sorta nicer, it wasn’t just pasted randomly but looks “clean”.

I think this is a great way to make any room in your home “vintage”. Even better, you might be able to make a wallpaper out of all your old photos somehow, that would be more awesome than your digital frame that’s pushing out only 1 image per second.

you can make wallpaper out of anything from newspapers and magazines to color copies by applying them to the wall with polyurethane (one coat underneath and one on top to seal the paper).

Perhaps recycling has not been done often enough in our world, especially those who have to constantly fix their house and throw away broken things.

Well, if your house gate ever breaks and you can use it anymore, you might want to consider converting it into an outdoor table. As seen in the above pics, the steps don’t seem too complicated, simply get 4 legs on it.

The gates at the side of our house succumbed to a big wind storm recently. The cause was ground rot on the posts, but that meant that most of the wood was still in pretty good condition despite being over thirty years old. Instead of throwing it out my wife suggested recycling it to make an outdoor table.

Bamboo has been always one of my favorite sustainable materials for goods. My love for bamboo started when I used to catch dragonflies in Korea with a dragonfly catching net (which basically looks like a fishing rod with a net at the end) that was made from bamboo.

Anyways, here’s a Chinese company that’s making some great bamboo keyboards and mice. Perhaps whoever starts importing these into the States would make some big dollars.

UK Residents now can read their Electricity Usage in Real Time using Google PowerMeter!

Google has just announced that every UK resident can now read their electricity and other energy usage in real-time using Google’s Powermeter.

Since yesterday, every resident in the United Kingdom can now watch how much energy they use on a daily basis using Google’s PowerMeter.

Google (GOOG) has announced the launch of PowerMeter with UK’s only energy supplier first-utility.

For one, this allows every UK resident to be aware of exactly how much energy they are using provided in real-time via PowerMeter and hopefully, save energy over months to come.

According to Mark Daeche, first:utility’s CEO, “At the end of the day, if you can’t measure and view your energy use, it’s very difficult to make savings.”

Solar car racing is happening in Australia, I think this would be a great movement towards future commercial solar cars. I don’t think we are that far away especially with the number of hybrid cars out there already with Prius already applying some solar panels. I would love to own a solar race car one day.

SYDNEY — A 3,000-kilometre (1,860-mile) solar car race across Australia’s desert heartland began in the northern city of Darwin Sunday, organisers said.

The cars left Darwin in hot and humid weather at about 8:30 am (2300 GMT Saturday) on the journey that is expected to end mid-week in the South Australian city of Adelaide.

“We had 32 vehicles start this morning,” Mike Drewer, a spokesman for the World Solar Challenge, told AFP, adding that weather conditions were good for solar cars.

Call me a gambler but I think the world would have much more incentive to recycle if we had more of these recycling arcade games in every block of every city in the world.

Even better, I’d say legalize gambling legal just for these recycling arcade games except that you can only use recyclable bottles and cans as money. (but win money if you hit jackpot)

I think it’s a safe bet since most casinos do take the money, I don’t see how the government could lose.

Of course, with the amount of politics involved, this might not be possible but indeed would make recycling a whole lot more efficient and fun.

Even those who are broke from gambling in real casinos can collect cans/bottles to try again, perhaps win jackpot and another life.

It is amazing really, when you think about the Olympics, top athletes and champions spring to mind, but to win a medal means that they are at the top of form and the best in the world. Therefore, at every Olympics the medals are designed to represent the games and the city where they are held.

This time the medals have been designed by Corrine Hunt and Omer Arbel, they have used recycled materials to make the gold, silver and bronze medals. These materials were at one time inside an electrical device such as a cell phone or computer.

Check out this awesome DIY by Giannina Lezcano who shows you how to make old light bulbs into flower vase, this is the most innovative DIY I have seen so far using old light bulbs.

She uses wires to connect the old light bulbs together and hangs the bulbs upside down so she can fill it with water and put flower to grow in.

We need more people like Giannina in our world. Brilliant!
