For RFID modders, here’s a great DIY to refer to, an RFID application that involves selecting your favorite music using RFID modules! I know some of you are working on RFID projects, this one should be very helpful indeed.

The RFiDJ project is my first attempt at an application in Imperceptible Computing. After work I like to listen to music/radio for a bit to unwind. This usually involves logging into my HTPC and selecting a playlist. For this project I attempted to change how I interact with my music and HTPC. Using RFID tags and photo frame coasters I am attempting to simplify the interface to my music.

Study Shows that Illegal Music Downloaders are the Ones Who Buy Most Legal Music Too!

Here’s an interesting study done in the UK showing that illegal music downloaders are the ones who buy the most legal music. I think this is probably true as people who are that good on computers to download illegal music would be more likely to use computers to buy music too. For me, I NEVER buy music online simply because I am not a bass head and rather listen to free internet radio. For others who don’t buy music, it might be mostly because they don’t know “how” and I know about a hundred people already who don’t know how to buy music online at least, they will still head to TowerRecords for that.

What’s your take on this? (Leave in the comments line)

A new British independent poll conducted by Ipsos Mori concluded that the people who do the most illegal downloading also buy the most music. This is in line with many other studies elsewhere and is easy to understand: people who are music superfans do more of everything to do with music: they see more live shows, listen to more radio, buy more CDs, buy more botlegs of live shows, buy more t-shirts, talk about music more, do more downloading — all of it.

Thinking about building yourself one of these cool Vacuum Tube Lamps? I think these are more artistic than anything. Who cares how it works, it “looks” great. I WANT ONE!

The basic circuits are rather similar, but the new project has a number of differences. Most notably it is easier and less costly to build. The rather large output transformers used in the original project have been replaced by ones that are considerably less weighty and less costly. This alone makes for a $40 to $50 savings. A number of circuit refinements have been included as well. One area of particular note is the higher gain of this new tube amp.

Obviously, this is a portable speaker, but surprisingly this is a Chinese item and is very cheap at just $15! However, that does not mean that this device is no good, in fact according to reports quite the opposite. We are finding that Chinese make gadgets are coming to the market cheaper than comparable products, but at a similar quality these days.
