Last August rock climber Dean Potter leapt off the Eiger in Switzerland wearing only a wingsuit. He flew nearly four miles in two minutes and 50 seconds, a record.

One of my best friends and my college freshmen roommate was a redneck guy from Northern California, he has repeatedly told me that duct tape can fix almost everything including relationships.

Well, I can’t believe it, but this guy’s plane got chewed up like a ball of paper by a Grizzly Bear in Alaska then he flew off back up with some duct tape as temporary fix. WOW, duct tape can save lives, make sure you note this if you own a plane.

The fishy aroma attracted a passing grizzly bear who, clearly frustrated at not being able to see the lovely “noms” it could smell, took the plane apart in an effort to find it. Aircraft fabric is no match for bear claws. The bear also chomped both tyres for good measure, then departed the scene.

Alaskans are a hardy bunch, however – as tough as the aircraft they fly. The pilot radioed for two new tyres, three cases of duct tape and a couple of rolls of cellophane to be flown in so he could repair his craft and get home.

Here’s a cool DIY tool for para-gliders and alike, learn how to make an Alti-Variometer. I’ve actually seen a para-glider who crashed into a tree by the highway the other week. If he had landed on the highway, I am sure he could have easily crashed onto on-coming cars. Perhaps this Alti-variometer could have prevented him going awry in the first place.

[Vlad-Andre] used some of his free time to build an alti-variometer. He does some para-gliding near restricted air space and wanted a backup altitude warning that would help keep him below the mandated altitude. His solution uses the SparkFun Weather Board in conjunction with their BlueSMiRF dongle to measure altitude and transmit it via Bluetooth. From there, he wrote a program to grab the transmitted data with his cell phone and display the information. His application also has the ability to set altitude warnings and log changes over time.

Therefore, as he is a busy man he simply cannot drop everything, so he paid for men’s barber Ken Modestu to be flown out from London to Brunei. However, no in any old plane, the hairdresser had his own compartment on the plane so that he was kept away from all of the other passengers just in case any of them were infected with swine flu. Just imagine what $20,000 could buy!

Now if the characters on “Lost” see this before they crashed then they would have had no problems getting off the island. This is a cool DIY helicopter that has been made from bit of wood, steel pipe and an old motor bike engine. The builder is twenty year old farmer who claims that the machine could reach a height of 2,600 feet.

However, of course, this is China and you just cannot build your own helicopter and fly around the countryside, no matter how rural you are. To his credit he estimates that the total cost for this machine is around $1,600, which is considerably cheaper that a real helicopter.

There was a time when owning a small bodied private jet was a sign of real wealth, but it seems that it not good enough for these days bigger is most definitely better. This the design for a privately owned Airbus A380, bought for $500,000,000.00, which is obviously a bargain!

However, not content with just that, the plane had to fitted out and made into a three floor flying palace. It has three floors because unlike normal aircraft this one does not need the luggage hold. Bedaise how else would they have been able to create a room with a transparent floor, oh yes that is what I said!

Today, I was just surfing around the web and found “Sonic Boom”!

What is it?

It’s when the aircraft goes faster than the speed of sound and creates water vapors basically or according to Wikipedia:

When an object passes through the air, it creates a series of pressure waves in front of it and behind it, similar to the bow and stern waves created by a boat. These waves travel at the speed of sound, and as the speed of the object increases, the waves are forced together, or compressed, because they cannot “get out of the way” of each other, eventually merging into a single shock wave at the speed of sound. This critical speed is known as Mach 1 and is approximately 1,225 kilometers per hour (761 mph) at sea level at room temperature.

There has been never a better time for people to create new eco-friendly planes that use pure electricity and here’s such DIY electric airplane that can go fly for about 1 hour on a single charge. Way too cool, now please make me an electric helicopter.

We have converted my single place, all metal Moni motor glider into a small, efficient electric airplane. We used our ElectraFlyer propulsion parts kit and our large battery pack, custom built to fit the available space in the airplane. The plane was raised for more ground clearance and a larger, slower-turning, much more efficient prop was installed. Static thrust has increased 60%. The plane received its airworthiness certificate in April. The ElectraFlyer-C is flying now and the climb rate has increased dramatically. The flying character of the plane has changed from a very loud, vibrating experience to a smooth quiet ride.

I used to have a TREX back when they first came out a few years ago. It was decent, I could do some tricks but nothing too special. The reason I stopped flying was I just could not afford the time and money it took to maintain the thing! The heli did not come put together so it took me about 2 weeks to get that done. Every week I was driving all around L.A. and O.C. trying to find a shop would take my $80 for my latest batch of parts I needed!

Stuff like this really interest me as I find it amazing how you can fit an Arduino in an UAV such as this one.

As you can see; when the Blade CX2 bounces on the ground, the power wire for the compass comes unplugged, then the rudder is out of control, which allows the Blade CX2 to spin, then the proximity cyclic no longer have a fix on the two walls. Once the Wash UAV’s cyclic is pointing at the couch rather than the wall, the Blade CX2 backs up into the wall behind it, knocking out the battery. once the battery is dangling, the Wash UAV is no longer balanced in a way that the software can handle, it crashes full on forward into the wall. SPECTACULAR!

Check out this cool DIY replica fighter jet that can actually run at 5MPH. Of course, that’s on the ground only but I wouldn’t mind having one of these in my garage, great for weekend neighborhood showoffs.

Measuring seven metres in length and four metres in width the £4,000 F-35 Lightning II Fighter Jet has been built at a scale of 1:2.

Resembling Tom Cruise’s jet out of Top Gun, it took 3,500 hours to construct the model.

The plane is constructed from iron, wood, hard foam, fibreglass and lots of epoxy filler, comes complete with cameras and monitors inside the cockpit, and is capable of achieving speeds of 5mph on the road.

The plane’s designer, Arthur van Poppel, 49, from Tilburg, Holland, said: “I finished the plane at the beginning of last year.

“I had no drawings to work from, just some pictures and a small plastic Revell model to use as an example.

Airplane Hack – How to Land a 747!

Here’s a cool airplane hack on how to land a 747 just in case.

Main Checklist

Get on the radio, and tell whoever’s listening that you are landing a 747.
Engage a single channel of the autopilot — light one of the buttons labeled “CMD.” Point the heading indicator in the direction indicated to keep the plane straight and level.
Find the checklists in the side pocket of the pilot’s and copilot’s seat. If the plane is a 747-400, engage the Automatic Landing System (ALS). If it is not a 747-400, see below under “Landing Without ALS.”
If you can’t find the checklists, use these:
1. Before Descent
  1. EO’s system check completed.
  2. Pressurization set.
  3. All a/c packs on. Set the airfield altitude so the plane is depressurized on landing.
  4. Humidifier off.
  5. HSIs: Radio. Switch horizontal situation indicators to radio navigation mode.
  6. Auto brakes: set.
2. Approach Checklist
  1. P.A. cabin call: “Cabin crew 15 minutes to landing.”
  2. Cabin signs and exit lights: on.
  3. Ignition: on. This sets the engine igniters for landing.
  4. Fuel system: set for landing.
  5. Fuel heat: check/off
  6. QNH: Set. So the altimeters read the airfield altitude on touchdown.
3. Landing Checklist
  1. Gear check: handle down, handle in, light green.
  2. Speedbrake: armed.
  3. Hydraulics: checked.
  4. Landing flap: set at 25 degrees.
  5. SCCM’s report: received. The cabins are secure for landing.
  6. Find the Jeppeson charts. Locate the radio frequency.
  7. Find the flight management system’s buttons on the glareshield marked LNAV and VNAV.
  8. Put the Jeppeson map on a 100 mile scale using the EFIS control panel on the front panel. You’ll get a yellow FMC message on the middle screen when it’s time to land.
  9. On the control display unit between the pilots’ seats, twist the knob until the little numbers go down to 100 ft. above field elevation in the Jeppeson notebook.
  10. Get the aircraft set to land: press the LOC and G/S buttons on the glareshield. All three CMD lights will go on, and the system will automatically tune to the right ILS frequency.
  11. 1Turn on the autobrakes when the plane starts descending.

This engine might not run but I am sure the guy who made it knows almost every detail of what went into making the Concorde engine.

Design firm PostlerFerguson has created Olympus, a 1:1 model of one of Concorde’s engines, which will be on display in the window of Selfridges until October 22.

Moller has been building flying cars for decades now based in Davis, California, the same town that I went to college. I remember hearing about my friends who “saw” a flying car in the field at least couple times a month before I found out about it blogging.

Anyways, Moller has a new type of flying car called the Autovolantor which can “fly” over traffic occasionally but it’s not designed for full flights.

I like this new hybrid model as I found it useful to “fly” over a bad traffic area sorta like that Shell commercial back in the day.

Stanford computer scientists have figured how to teach autonomous helicopters how to do stunt maneuvers.

It sounds like a great idea to me if they can apply this to general robotics.

Stanford’s artificial intelligence system learned how to fly by “watching” the four-foot-long helicopters flown by expert radio control pilot Garett Oku. “Garett can pick up any helicopter, even ones he’s never seen, and go fly amazing aerobatics. So the question for us is always, why can’t computers do things like this?” Coates said.

Computers can, it turns out. On a recent morning in an empty field at the edge of campus, Abbeel and Coates sent up one of their helicopters to demonstrate autonomous flight. The aircraft, brightly painted Stanford red, is an off-the-shelf radio control helicopter, with instrumentation added by the researchers.

For five minutes, the chopper, on its own, ran through a dizzying series of stunts beyond the capabilities of a full-scale piloted helicopter and other autonomous remote control helicopters. The artificial-intelligence helicopter performed a smorgasbord of difficult maneuvers: traveling flips, rolls, loops with pirouettes, stall-turns with pirouettes, a knife-edge, an Immelmann, a slapper, an inverted tail slide and a hurricane, described as a “fast backward funnel.”

Perhaps, this MotoPod will let more people with personal airplanes to get around town easier by letting them stash their favorite dirt bike/motorcycle under the plane.

…basically a cargo pod that allows you to carry a street-legal motorcycle underneath your plane.
The motorcycle is a Yamaha XT225 which was selected because it was both economical and lightweight, and overall the pod and bike add about 500 pounds to an aircraft’s total weight. (Resulting in an airspeed cut of about 9 knots.) The bike does require a bit of assembly before it can be ridden, but the pod is easily lowered with a built-in powered winch and you can apparently be on the road just minutes after landing. The MotoPOD is expected to go on sale later this year with a price tag below $10,000 (including the motorcycle) but you can reserve one now for a fully-refundable $1,000.

I can’t wait to get a seat in one of these airplanes.

The cam feed can be shown on the seat-back displays and gives you an almost Superman-like view of the aircraft from 79-feet up at the top of the tail. It’s pretty amazing watching the behemoth aircraft surge slowly down the runway and into the air… and there’s another vid, showing it landing in to SFO as part of the recent Emirates tour.

Yey, the Martin Jetpack is out. It looks like a lot of fun, maybe even more so than hang gliding.

Little is known about the capabilities of this flying machine, though sources familiar with its design say it can fly 100 times longer than previous jetpacks. Historically, 26 seconds has been the endurance of previous technology. This being the case, the Martin Jetpack could potentially be able to fly for as much as 40 minutes at a time on a single tank of gas.

Yey, at last a hydrongen fuel-cell powered electric plane that can do top speeds of 62mph!

Not your jet plane but still, you are flying very efficiently.

The plane is based on a two-seat Dimona motor-glider frame with a 16.3 metre (53.5 feet) wingspan. It was modified by BR&TE to incorporate a hybrid low emission engine, containing Intelligent Energy’s power dense Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell power system and lithium-ion batteries, to power an electric motor coupled to a conventional propeller.

Three test flights took place in February and March at an airfield near Madrid. Each time, the pilot climbed to an altitude of 1,000 metres(3,300 feet) above sea level using a combination of battery power and power generated by the hydrogen fuel cells, and continued in a straight path at the cruising altitude for 20 minutes at a speed of 100 km per hour (62 miles per hour) on power solely generated by the fuel cells.

Researchers at the Oklahoma State University and DARPA have developed something that can only described as a mini jet engine, it can vary in from being smaller than a cigarette to longer than a foot, but can provide power to a UVA or other un-manned craft, which can take video or other images of the enemy.

This is a great time for this type of technology as there are many other items coming out such as the un-manned UVA that can stay in the air for up five years!

As from tomorrow there is no point trying to get on a plane when in possession of lithium battery in a plastic casing.

If the batteries are new as if they are in the original packaging then they can be taken, but other than that, no lithium batteries will be allowed on a plane.

This is a jet powered school bus which will burn up the road and reach take off speed, or rather you would have thought so but there is no data available on the performance, or in fact if there is any room left for seats anyway!

The long awaited return of Knightrider will soon be upon us, but the star of the show has always been the car named KITT rather than the star named “The Hoff”.

Some of the features of the new KITT are the following:

Laser weapons system,
Nanotech cloaking,
Laser-guided missile defence,
3D heads-up display,
Military-grade GPS,
Holographic projection
And even a Mini-KITT reconnaissance drone (whatever that may be?)

Which is ok, but what about the jet thrusters?

Knightrider has some cool gadgets

NASA creates flying telescope

This is an attempt to get some great images from space, but without the costs involved by maintaining the Hubble telescope in space, which is great but hugely expensive.

This forms part of the NASA Origins program and by working with the DLR who are the German Aerospace Centre they have developed a flying telescope inside a Boeing 747SP. This will fly at 47,000 feet and should some really cool images from space.

This could be a viable alternative to the Hubble and the space used to maintain it, however we will need to wait for until around 2009to see if it works as good as hope, when it is fully operational.

NASA creates flying telescope

For those who don’t know an OPAV is an Optionally Piloted Air Vehicle, this version can be flown unmanned or with a pilot hovering around 15 feet above the ground on a cushion of air similar to that of a hovercraft.

The company behind the VeriPod are called Air Buoyant they believe that this could be the Segway of the sky, although15 feet in the air is not technically right, but its close enough. These will be sold in kit form and state that it can be assembled over the weekend, all for around £10,000.

Build your own helicopter

It’s true that with enough determination that a person can do almost anything, in the case of Mubarak Muhammad Abdullahi, a 24 years old physics undergraduate from Nigeria, he did just that.

He always wanted his own helicopter, but did not want to spend the couple of million dollars on buying one, so he went down to the local scrap yard and built his own.

This one is made out of scarp metal, the seats out of an old Toyota car and the power comes from a trusty old 133 bhp Honda Civic engine. The dimensions are 12 m (39 ft) long, 5 m wide and 7 m high and believe it or not it does fly, but he has only flown it around seven feet off the ground!

Build your own helicopter

At last the flying car!

This is the dream of every school child the thought of hoping into the family car and flying off to some great vacation and back in no time at all.

This flying car only has seats though, but it is early days and there is plenty of time for the designers to make a larger one! At the moment the this car is nineteen long, has folding wings for easy parking and even has an auto pilot feature.

Naturally there is a need for training of drivers/pilots who may have to wait as there are already 100 advance orders for the flying machine!

There is no actual fixed price list at the moment but it is estimated that the final price will be around the $150,000 mark, so I’ll have two of those please!
