Check out this cool little DIY robot that can ski downhill, amazing ain’t it?

This could be the tip of the iceberg for future generation of ski robots. Of course, these can possibly save lives in the future under harsh snow conditions.

I’d also love to see if they can make a robot that can snowboard, as I rather snowboard than ski. (Well, there’s this snowboard robot for testing snowboards…)

In the olden days when it snowed we used to get anything flat to use a makeshift sledge, this could be wood, boxes or even just go full out and do a belly flop, but that one is not recommended I can tell you that from personal experience.

However, kids have it so easy these days and these suits just prove that point. These have a built plastic tray that means they do not even have to carry it to the top of the hill. Life is so unfair!

Snowboard Tricks DIY – How to Jump or Nollie Is it?

Well, I had the pleasure of jumping off some of the bigger jumps and did awfully well due to the fact that I have been snowboarding over 20 years, even some little kids were cheering me on.

Anyways, there’s couple lessons I learned over the years on how to jump (or nollie is it?) on a snowboard:

1. Learn to go very fast, if you can learn to balance your body while going fast, this will help you get a lot of speed into your jump without any problems.

To do this, you will want to practice on black diamond downhills a lot and going through lots of moguls can help too.

While you are going fast downhill, try turning by bunny-hopping (or mini jumps). Because you are going downhill so fast, it will be easier for you to turn by jumping off the ground (or feels almost like flying) slightly right before your turn.

2. Once you master going downhill fast (about 45mph+) and you can control your board, it’s time to head to the snowboard park.

At the snowboard park, you will find a bunch of different jumps varying from small to some huge ones.

Start with the small jumps at first. Once you get the hang of the small jumps, start challenging yourself to larger ones.

Eventually, you will get more and more comfortable.

3. One of the most common mistakes I see among beginners is the fact that people go too slow before the jump. You actually need to go about 25% faster than you think.

The faster you are going before the jump, the higher and longer you will jump, all the while your balance gets easier because you are going faster through the air.

That’s right. Use your balls here and make sure you are going really, really fast.

If you keep falling down on your landing, that means you need to either work on your balance at high speeds or you need to go faster.

If you go too slow, you will lose momentum and it’s harder to balance yourself in the air.

So in all, just go fast enough so you feel “scared”. Once you get through the fear of going fast, that’s when you start landing jumps flawlessly.

(My digital camera frame rate is slow, so the jumps look kinda crap but I did get some good air in real life. You can see someone broke their back at the end of the video right after my jump…)

Well, I did go down the mountain run at Squaw Valley after they closed all the lifts at 9PM, here’s a long video of me going downhill. (again, it looks waaaay slower than it is in real life due to my crappy Canon)

Well, it’s that time of the year and if you haven’t learned to snowboard, here’s some tips I’ve learned over the years that can help you snowboard better.

1. If it’s your first time, try going down the slopes at 90 degree angle to the slope slowly while balancing your body.

2. Once you master balancing, try turning with the slope and braking by turning back to 90 degree angle to the slope.

3. Once you have mastered balancing and turning, challenge yourself to go down steeper slopes. If you never challenge yourself, you won’t get any better.

Repeat and Rinse steps 3 until you can go down advanced slopes w/o any problems.

Now, this is just a simply guide for you to learn how to snowboard. There’s a ton more to do such as jumping off big jumps, grinding, and etc…etc…

Snowboarding isn’t hard but the very first day you snowboard for the first time, you should expect to fall more than gazillion times. I recommend buying snowboard pants with buttock support, these won’t hurt your butt at all if you fall on your butt. Most beginners who don’t get these special pants will almost feel like their butt bones have cracked after the first day. (given you did try your best to learn)

My first day on the slopes on a snowboard was about 21 years ago. My first day was the probably hardest but starting on the second day, I was able to go down advanced slopes with no problems.

Now, if you have skateboarded or surfed, snowboard will be a lot easier to learn than if you haven’t.

We like the new design except they might have to change their slogan unless they want a lawsuit from the car maker Lamborghini.

Cheetah Ultra Sports has apparently developed the Whip F-117 after four solid years of research, development and taking oodles of time off to hit the slopes. In short, it’s dubbed the Lamborghini of snowboards, promising to make riders go faster, feel lighter, turn quicker, edge harder, carve sharper and be broker. Yeah, we’re just kidding on that last one, though the $1,899 price tag may just disagree

Tight, here’s SnoDeck, a motorized snow skateboard! Although you can do nollie or take it to your nearest swimming pool for some crazy ghetto half pipes, at least you can go out in the snow and enjoy ridin’ around before the snow melts. If you go to health clubs, sometimes you will see these cool balancing boards and a lot of skateboarders use these to actually practice balancing and doing nollies.
Well, I am really inclined to build this one myself, it really works out your lower body and increases your ability to balance yourself.
This can also be very good for snowboarders during the off-season, to keep their balancing abilities to top shape. (OR just skateboard like me…)

Build an indoor board (balance board) that can be used for
indoor surfing, skating, etc… or for general balance
training. These are sold as “indoboards” on the market, but I more…
will show you how to make your own at a fraction of the cost.
Watch out for th carpet burns though!

We’ve received word that a respected member of our tech community, James Kim (whom many of you may know as CNET’s senior editor of digital audio), and his family have gone missing. As we understand it, last weekend James, his wife Kati (above right), and his very young girls Penelope (left) and Sabine (baby), drove from their home in the SF Bay Area to Seattle. They were expected back some time Sunday, but were last seen by a hotel clerk at 5:45 PM on Saturday in or between Gold Beach or Portland, Oregon. We sincerely do hope they are all safe, and our hearts go out to the Kim family.

We’ll have more information as we get it. If you have any information as to the Kim family’s whereabouts, please contact the SFPD at 415-558-5508 during normal business hours, and 415-553-1071 after hours.
