Over the weekend, I took some leisure to play one of my favorite pastimes, golf! Well, I did a quick video showing you how to hit the pitch shot using your full swing, well mini-version of your full swing that is.

A pitch shot is nothing more than a short version of your full shot. This is the simplest way to hit it although there’s many more ways you can hit it too.

I’ve outlined exactly how to do this over on my golf blog, check it out.

The basic method of hitting this soft, floating chip/pitch shot is to open your clubface (this would depend on how high you want to hit it) and simply using a “mini version” of your full swing.

There’s couple of things you need to do and that is to take a square stance, just like a full shot, you DON”T NEED TO OPEN YOUR STANCE AT ALL.

I find that you can actually hit these little pitch shots more consistently if you setup square to the ball. Also, make sure to hit DOWN on the ball and THROUGH the ball. Don’t be afraid to hit this shot, you need to be confident.

Golf DIY – How to Make Kid’s Golf Clubs!

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of making couple kid’s clubs, all custom-fitted to fit one of my friend’s daughters. You see, the golfing world still doesn’t make enough different sizes for golfers under 5 years of age. Meaning the only way to get your kids to play golf early in life is to cut existing clubs or make them yourself.

Well, I’ve documented the process while I was making these super-short golf clubs detailing how to cut the golf shaft, put the ferrule on, install the clubhead, and also install the golf grip.

This is a great skill to learn and it doesn’t take long to make a golf club. Plus, you will save a bunch of money the next time you need a new club or your children need golf clubs.

I did the 7-iron for about $20 and the driver for about $30, still beats buying them off golf retail stores.

Whether your toddler is a 12 month year old who’s 1.5 feet tall or a 3 year old 2.5 feet tall, making custom-fit golf clubs can dramatically improve chances of your child playing better golf.

The problem is that most of toddler/junior golf clubs bought off the rack at the retail stores or online are too long for these young, aspiring golfers.

If you want your child to be as good as Tiger Woods or to simply enjoy golf at an early age, it’s vital that you either cut junior golf clubs to fit their height or make toddler golf clubs from scratch as I am showing you in this blog post.

One of the most important aspects of tournament/competitive golf is that you develop a sound and consistent pre-shot routine. Without this, you simply cannot perform under pressure. By developing a good pre-shot routine, not only will you play better golf, you will also be able to put most of your golf shots under “automatic pilot”.

If you look at the top golfers in this world, virtually every one of them have developed a pre-shot routine that’s consistent down to the amount of time. For example, you might notice that Tiger Woods takes 40 seconds to hit a golf tee shot from teeing up the ball to actually hitting the shot, it will never vary by more than couple seconds in the same round.

One of the best ways to learn how to swing a golf club is by actually swinging a big ball such as a basketball. A lot of beginners and amateurs don’t know really how to swing with their body because a golf club doesn’t tell you how to do that but a basketball does.

Simply hold a basketball and turn the basketball to the right using your body, meaning your belly, shoulders, arms, and hands. You should be able to turn the basketball using the large muscles in your body. Your hands actually do nothing in the process except hold the ball.

Golf Tips – How To Start the Downswing with your Lower Body!

Well, as a pro golfer who has studied golf for as long as I can remember, one of the worst flaws in golf is hitting the golf ball with your hands from the top. The best way to solve over-the-top slice/hooks is to start your downswing with your lower body.

I have outlined the details on how to start your downswing with the lower body plus a simple exercise you can do to ingrain this golf technique over at my golf blog.

Check it out as it can potentially turn you from a regular golfer to a scratch golfer.

Once you master this method of starting your downswing with your lower body, you should be able to hit the ball straighter, further, and also be able to control the ball better.

The greatest part about swinging like this is that once you master it, you can hit the ball as hard as you want AND your ball will go even straighter/longer.

Of course, this is something I learned from Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons. He doesn’t outline every step but I have added some exercises that can help you feel what he’s trying to teach in his book.

Golf DIY – How to Hit the Ball Straighter with Nike SQ Dymo STR8-FIT Driver!

As you well know if you’ve read my profile on our About page, my real skills in life lie with golf clubs.

Recently, I had the pleasure of doing a comparison of the new Nike SQ Dymo STR8-FIT driver and the TaylorMade R9 driver. Although I have been using a Titleist 983K driver for most of last 10 or so years, I am much surprised by the golf driver technology that allows people to hit straighter drives without changing their swings.

Anyways, the Nike SQ DYMO STR8-FIT was the better choice in the testing due to the fact that the new Nike SQ DYMO STR8-FIT driver can help you hit the ball straighter and farther.

One thing I look for in a new driver is its ability to square the clubface nearing impact. When your club can do this, it’s doing most of the work for you, helping you to hit the ball square in the sweet spot. Once you can do that consistently, your ball will ultimately go farther.

So, you see, there’s a direct correlation between how long you can hit the ball and how consistently you can hit the sweetspot.

As for distance, I have to say the Nike outperformed the TaylorMade as even my mishits with the Nike have gone 290 yards while the TaylorMade mishits were more in the range of 270 yards with wild hooks here and there.

One of things I want to actually emphasize here is not the club’s ability to adjust to different lies and trajectories but the clubhead itself is solid. Having a solid clubhead allows you to hit the ball straighter and with more “overspin”, allowing your ball to roll further and better control under windy conditions.

Golf DIY – How to Play Better Golf Under Pressure!

Many of you probably know me as a “serial blogger” or problogger but my skills in my life isn’t writing, English is my 2nd language and I got world-record Cs in 99% of all my English classes in elementary/middle/high school and in college.

Of course, blogging has made my writing better (it ain’t stellar still) and reading other blogs on a daily basis has helped me better articulate myself online.

My real skills lie in hitting that flop-shot over a high-lip bunker or hitting a 350 yard drive on a par 5. That’s right, I was always good with computers and electronics since I was little but my dream has always been to make it on the PGA Tour. (and boy I have played with the likes of Nick Watney as a junior golf, nice guy btw. Too bad it’s taking me forever to make it to the PGA Tour.)

Of course, that part of my life is still in hibernation, I’ve been putting it all off on my golf blog but I figure it’d be great if I can share with my readers what I’ve learned through intense competition golf.

So, without delay, here’s some “real” tips you can use on the golf course to deal with tournament pressure. Whether you are playing for dollar skins or simply want to become a pro golfer, these tips can help you achieve that and you won’t learn this from any golf books because I read all of them. (Yes, my vast collection of golf books will surprise you but you can check out some of the golf book reviews I did here.)

These are the tips tailored to the mistakes that Tiger, Phil, Chad, and Kenny made at the yesterday’s final round of Masters:

How to achieve the mental state required to play under pressure?

As a player, I have played good at various times too, those times I usually felt like I was “home” or simply “relaxed”.

Here’s some tips on how to feel “relaxed” during your round:

To feel relaxed, you need to make sure to “visualize” your outcome during the round and don’t be too “aggressive” on holes that you don’t have to.

Develop and hit your “bread-and-butter” shots. Sometimes, I even hit a low-screaming knock-down shot with my 3-iron on short par 4s and my playing partners are like, “did you miss that?”. No, i can hit that low screamer at my target 9 out of 10 times, even under pressure.

If you start playing bad on the course, take at least couple days off golf. Those mental pictures you keep putting in your head will end up in vicious cycle of bad rounds thereafter. You need to get those out of your system. If I were Phil, Tiger, Kenny, or Chad, I would take at least a week off golf before I even “touch” a club. Trust me, your golf memories are EVERYTHING in golf.

When you practice, make sure you hit perfect shots, meaning take every step of your pre-shot routine to ensure 100% quality in your shot. Don’t just bang balls one after another, that’s worse than just sitting on your couch. It’s ALL about your mental memories of your previous “good” shots.

Especially for shorter shots like short game and putting, practice with 5 to 10 balls. Don’t dump your golf balls and bang away. Treat each shot like it’s REAL. If you hit a bad chip shot and it comes up 20 feet short of the pin, CLEAR your balls and start over so you don’t SEE or REMEMBER your bad shots.

Keep tricking your brain on a consistent daily-basis that you only hit “perfect” shots.

And yes, congrats to Angel Cabrera, a native Argentinian who has won numerous European tournaments, and now a Masters winner!

Golf DIY – How to Play Better Golf Under Pressure!

Go Tiger at the Masters!

I dunno why but I have always been excited to watch Tiger come back from 7 or 8 strokes back, today is such a day, I hope he shoots like 6 or 7 under although he hasn’t really playing lights out.

Anyways, I am off to watch the Masters all day, sorry for no tech posts today. Every year, I tend to get lazy near Masters but I am still online, you can join in “live” twittering conversation at my golf twitter @progolferdigest.

In the end, it does not matter who win because every player that finishes the Masters will be taking a lot of money home.

My predictions today for winner of Masters 2009 is actually not Kenny Perry or Angel Cabrera. I honestly do not think Kenny Perry nor Angel Cabrera have the guts during intense competition to win.

Most likely, I am predicting that either Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods, or Anthony Kim will come through. (except Anthony made a bogey on his first hole already)

I might be wrong though, in golf, you never know until the very last putt is dropped.

Go Tiger! If Tiger wins, that’s also more TV viewers and more money spewed into future golf and more inspiration for youngsters out there. There’s probably no one who can replace Tiger, just the way he is.

Likewise, tomorrow will be exciting day for the golfing world as we will get to either watch Kenny Perry or Angel Cabrera MELT DOWN! (Am I being evil? Yes, I am free to my own predictions but don’t mind me, winning isn’t EVERYTHING. Whoever finishes tomorrow at the Masters will be still racking up a lot of cash home.)

Here’s my biased predictions (from a pro golfer) for tomorrow:

Based on history of Masters, I don’t think either Kenny Perry nor Angel Cabrera will win. Of course, I could be wrong but my favorites this year are Tiger Woods, Anthony Kim, or Jim Furyk.

It has to be must for all of those golfing fans out there, although they are bound to use it inside to improve their putting practice.

Gyro Swing for Perfect On-Plane Swings?

Now, as an expert golfer with 20+ years of playing and professional golf, I can tell you most golf gadgets don’t work well and most of the time, your golf swing can be fixed without them.

But here’s a really innovative gyro swing that uses a gyroscope (basically) to keep your swing on-plane.

Of course, I have not tried this one so I won’t go further into it but it might work…

My advice, just hit the ball solid and you won’t need this. (and I got bunch of tips on my golf blog.)

Feel the correct plane and release. For the first time, you can “feel” the perfect swing instead of worrying about positions and mechanics. The gyroscope in the clubhead forces your swing to stay on plane and grooves a perfectly timed release.

Now, this will work really well on the golf course as the flagstick in golf is always the same. (of course, there’s a different stand for USGA and the UK so…)

This site will show you how you can convert your webcam into a modern range estimation tool without any hardware. The math is very simple, so this new technique works very well for vision applications that need to run quickly.

With a simple height estimation, the program will easily calculate the range to a distant object with high precision. The software will be next upgraded with motion detection.

Rather, you need a sturdy bag that will live up to rainfall and daily grind.

I know Louis Vuitton makes great handbags but golf bags? Come on guys, you need to do better than this.

This golf bag might be able to fit just half of my clubs but probably too small by tour standards anyways.

Form and function must come together for a good golf bag and if you want to waste some money on brand, go right ahead but I am telling you, this bag really sucks even looking at it.

I wonder why golf cart manufacturers never thought of a sustainable solar powered golf cart like this in the first place. The great thing about these solar carts is that they will re-charge themselves most likely during the round of golf so you never really have to re-charge them via a wall-plug.

The Solar Powered Golf Cart.
This is the electric golf cart that has an array of 72 photovoltaic cells built into the roof that collect solar energy, providing up to 33% more range between recharges than non-solar electric golf carts. The carts 160-watt array produces up to three amps per hour for its 48-volt rechargeable battery system, providing a range of up to 49 milesapproximately 10 rounds of golfbefore requiring a full recharge (overnight via its 6′ long AC adapter; 15 hours via its solar array). The array also extends the life of the battery system by 60% more than other electric golf carts. Its 5 1/2-hp electric motor and 19-spline rear axle provides a maximum speed of 24 MPH and is powerful enough to enable the cart to climb a 28° incline when fully l oaded with two passengers and golf bags, supporting up to 755 lbs.

Well, sometimes I do get very burned out from blogging 24/7, here’s my swing analysis of my own golf swing and a video of a 3 wood shot I hit perfect! today at the Harding Park GC driving range.

The greatest feeling in the world comes when you hit the ball great. I think so… maybe I am a golf geek…haha

Well, I am a scratch golfer and do not like to use any golf carts since I am old-school, but here’s an autonomous golf cart that’s better than the existing electric carts on the market.

Yet another job for pimply 16-year-olds has been rendered obsolete with technology, now that golfers can use the Shadow Caddy—a fully autonomous golf club carrying cart that trails behind you automatically. The three-wheeled cart works by following a signal from a transmitter worn on the golfer’s body. Switching the caddy’s setting from “Follow-Me” to “Park” makes sure it never accidentally follows you into a bunker or onto the green.
