Last August rock climber Dean Potter leapt off the Eiger in Switzerland wearing only a wingsuit. He flew nearly four miles in two minutes and 50 seconds, a record.

Golf DIY – How to Hit the Pitch Shot using your Full Swing!

Over the weekend, I took some leisure to play one of my favorite pastimes, golf! Well, I did a quick video showing you how to hit the pitch shot using your full swing, well mini-version of your full swing that is.

A pitch shot is nothing more than a short version of your full shot. This is the simplest way to hit it although there’s many more ways you can hit it too.

I’ve outlined exactly how to do this over on my golf blog, check it out.

The basic method of hitting this soft, floating chip/pitch shot is to open your clubface (this would depend on how high you want to hit it) and simply using a “mini version” of your full swing.

There’s couple of things you need to do and that is to take a square stance, just like a full shot, you DON”T NEED TO OPEN YOUR STANCE AT ALL.

I find that you can actually hit these little pitch shots more consistently if you setup square to the ball. Also, make sure to hit DOWN on the ball and THROUGH the ball. Don’t be afraid to hit this shot, you need to be confident.

Golf DIY – How to Make Kid’s Golf Clubs!

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of making couple kid’s clubs, all custom-fitted to fit one of my friend’s daughters. You see, the golfing world still doesn’t make enough different sizes for golfers under 5 years of age. Meaning the only way to get your kids to play golf early in life is to cut existing clubs or make them yourself.

Well, I’ve documented the process while I was making these super-short golf clubs detailing how to cut the golf shaft, put the ferrule on, install the clubhead, and also install the golf grip.

This is a great skill to learn and it doesn’t take long to make a golf club. Plus, you will save a bunch of money the next time you need a new club or your children need golf clubs.

I did the 7-iron for about $20 and the driver for about $30, still beats buying them off golf retail stores.

Whether your toddler is a 12 month year old who’s 1.5 feet tall or a 3 year old 2.5 feet tall, making custom-fit golf clubs can dramatically improve chances of your child playing better golf.

The problem is that most of toddler/junior golf clubs bought off the rack at the retail stores or online are too long for these young, aspiring golfers.

If you want your child to be as good as Tiger Woods or to simply enjoy golf at an early age, it’s vital that you either cut junior golf clubs to fit their height or make toddler golf clubs from scratch as I am showing you in this blog post.

Another Cool DIY Segway!

Here’s another really cool DIY Segway. Of course, if you want to build one yourself, don’t forget to check out this blog post on how to make your own segway here. (and custom segway mods here)

The frame was modeled in CAD and then welded together. For propulsion [Mark] has installed two 750 Watt motors which will use sprockets and chains to turn the wheels. The machine balances based on data from both a gyroscope and an accelerometer, with the entire packaged tied together using an Arduino.

Another Cool DIY Segway!

There have been a lot of variations on the Segway recently but this one goes that extra mile by the looks of it, the machine appears to be a sort of crossover between a hovercraft and a Segway.
Personally I cannot imagine too many of these being driven around the streets yet they do look like nice bit of fun.

Features – Speed and braking are controlled through two levers located on the steering bar. A kill switch automatically deactivates the Air Board in case you unexpectedly jump off, and steering is accomplished by simply shifting your body weight (like a surfboard or skateboard). This is a brilliant idea that has come all the way from New Zealand, it’s called the YikeBike and it works on a similar way as the Segway does, except this time it has a seat.
This means it is ideal for all sorts of people who would probably not go near a Segway, so maybe the YikeBike could pick up on those consumers who like to sit down on the job!

Check out this life-sized DIY Guitar Hero that can be controlled by soccer balls. (and probably any other kind of ball from what I can see)

This DIY Guitar Hero project was created using Arduino and projectors, certainly a really cool project they have done here.

An experiment to create a giant (three stories high!) guitar game controlled with footballs. Football Hero is played by a team of insanely gifted young freestyle footballers. The game is programmed with the Kasabian track Underdog.

Golf Tips – How To Start the Downswing with your Lower Body!

Well, as a pro golfer who has studied golf for as long as I can remember, one of the worst flaws in golf is hitting the golf ball with your hands from the top. The best way to solve over-the-top slice/hooks is to start your downswing with your lower body.

I have outlined the details on how to start your downswing with the lower body plus a simple exercise you can do to ingrain this golf technique over at my golf blog.

Check it out as it can potentially turn you from a regular golfer to a scratch golfer.

Once you master this method of starting your downswing with your lower body, you should be able to hit the ball straighter, further, and also be able to control the ball better.

The greatest part about swinging like this is that once you master it, you can hit the ball as hard as you want AND your ball will go even straighter/longer.

Of course, this is something I learned from Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons. He doesn’t outline every step but I have added some exercises that can help you feel what he’s trying to teach in his book.

This time the medals have been designed by Corrine Hunt and Omer Arbel, they have used recycled materials to make the gold, silver and bronze medals. These materials were at one time inside an electrical device such as a cell phone or computer.

In the olden days when it snowed we used to get anything flat to use a makeshift sledge, this could be wood, boxes or even just go full out and do a belly flop, but that one is not recommended I can tell you that from personal experience.

Swimming 101 – How to Do a Flip Turn!

When I was about 13, my mom used to take me to YMCA in South San Francisco where I learned how to do various swimming basics such as the flip turn. Btw, YMCA has the god-awful smell of urine, I try to avoid them nowdays.

My advice for a quick flip turn on a freestyle stroke: Simply start flipping before you reach the end of the pool and make sure your legs are ready to jump back out.

For backward strokes(or strokes where you are seeing the ceiling): Try to mark a point in the ceiling where you know you have reached the end of the pool lane and start flippin.

A) Cock shoulders back while raising ball two to three inches.
B) Drop non-throwing hand from ball to chest level.
C) Release throwing arm into forward motion.
D) While throwing arm is In forward motion, raise ball above head.
E) While completing step two, three, and four, step forward with leg opposite of throwing hand toward target.

In my recent trip to Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas couple months ago, I became of Texans and people there. One of my best friends is a true southerner from Texas, he “loves” the Cowboys, will die to just watch them on TV. Anyways, I’ve been to Texas often but I found that people there are very nice, indeed more nicer than people here in San Francisco where everyone too busy trying to cut each other off.

Anyways, Dallas Cowboys will be setting a world record with their new HD video screen which has total viewing area of 11,393 square-feet, equal to 3,268 TVs!

CYPRESS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Mitsubishi Electric gained yet another entry in the Guinness World Records book with the recognition of its revolutionary Diamond Vision video boards at Cowboys Stadium as the World’s Largest High-Definition Video Display. The official certificate presentation will take place during a pre-game ceremony on September 28, just prior to the Cowboys vs. Carolina Panthers Monday Night Football game, which will be aired nationally on ESPN.

The world’s first four-sided, center-hung, high-definition video display in a stadium consists of four Diamond Vision(R) LED video screens, with the two main sideline displays measuring 72 feet high by 160 feet wide, and two Diamond Vision(R) end-zone displays measuring 29 feet high by 51 feet wide. Yes, I have been very, very, guilty of making experimental hoverboards in the past but here’s one you can buy and it’s only about 17 grand, still much cheaper than a new hybrid Prius. Seriously, I think the NFL executives (or whatever they call the decision makers there) have no brains at all. NFL has officially “banned” use of Twitter by players or their representatives before, during, and after the game. (I would tell the NFL players to start a Twitter revolution. It’s time the players make decisions! After all, NFL isn’t NFL without the players.)

Say it aint so, Ochocinco! One of the NFL’s biggest personalities and one of Twitter’s most engaging celebrities indicated (via tweet) this afternoon that he’ll be deleting his account on the microblogging service “due to the many rules the NFL has made.”

WHY THE HELL WOULD THEY DO THAT?!?

So they can get LESS exposure for NFL? Geez, Twitter has to be the best tool for promoting sports.

I hope they learn their lesson and stop being ridiculous. Boo NFL executives, Boo~ You guys need to grow up and stop squawking and focus on what makes NFL better.

My advice to you NFL executives:

Do you like swimming? Do you have no space for a 50-feet lap pool in your backyard? Does it snow where you live?

If you answered yes to any of those questions above, you might be happy to learn that there IS a way to install a 50-feet lap pool in your backyard or even garage!

Blackberry saves a Skiers from Falling 700 Feet!

Here’s a rather interesting story where a skier got wedged between two rocks. The blackberry in his pocket made his body just wide enough to fall 700 feet and saved his life.

At first I thought the Blackberry saved the skier by letting him call 911 but I guess there’s more uses with Blackberries than just calling the emergency department.

Very interesting, I am sure someone is already using a Blackberry to put butter on their bread already. (Congrats to David Fitzherbert for making it alive!)

“After 70 feet it narrowed and I became stuck like a cork in a bottle between the walls.

“Fortunately the extra inches of the Blackberry were enough to block the fall.”

Golf DIY – How to Hit the Ball Straighter with Nike SQ Dymo STR8-FIT Driver!

As you well know if you’ve read my profile on our About page, my real skills in life lie with golf clubs.

Recently, I had the pleasure of doing a comparison of the new Nike SQ Dymo STR8-FIT driver and the TaylorMade R9 driver. Although I have been using a Titleist 983K driver for most of last 10 or so years, I am much surprised by the golf driver technology that allows people to hit straighter drives without changing their swings.

Anyways, the Nike SQ DYMO STR8-FIT was the better choice in the testing due to the fact that the new Nike SQ DYMO STR8-FIT driver can help you hit the ball straighter and farther.

One thing I look for in a new driver is its ability to square the clubface nearing impact. When your club can do this, it’s doing most of the work for you, helping you to hit the ball square in the sweet spot. Once you can do that consistently, your ball will ultimately go farther.

So, you see, there’s a direct correlation between how long you can hit the ball and how consistently you can hit the sweetspot.

As for distance, I have to say the Nike outperformed the TaylorMade as even my mishits with the Nike have gone 290 yards while the TaylorMade mishits were more in the range of 270 yards with wild hooks here and there.

One of things I want to actually emphasize here is not the club’s ability to adjust to different lies and trajectories but the clubhead itself is solid. Having a solid clubhead allows you to hit the ball straighter and with more “overspin”, allowing your ball to roll further and better control under windy conditions.

Motorcycle DIY Video – How to Ride a Motorcycle!

Let me tell you a story of how I started riding motorcycles.

The very first time was at my best friend’s house up in Humbolt, California where he had a dirt-bike. Well, to cap the story short, I didn’t know how to ride, didn’t have a helmet on, ultimately did a superman and sorta chipped a part of my leg bones after flipping over about 3 times on the ground.

As ugly as that experience sounds, I got the courage to actually BUY a motorcycle couple years later in South Korea, where I was staying. The traffic was so bad, the only way to get around the city fast was with a motorcycle.

Now as weird as that sounds, I sorta had the idea of how to ride a motorcycle but didn’t really know and I just BOUGHT a bike!!! So, after BUYING the bike, I ask the bike shop merchant on how to ride a motorcycle.

I did couple practice runs around the red-light district (it was red-light district where I bought the bike), then headed over a big bridge and drove home. That was the scariest part of my life, riding a brand new motorcycle on the road, not knowing how to ride one and knowing I have wrecked on a friend’s dirt-bike.

Gladly, I haven’t done any superman and I have actually “survived” the brutal traffic in Seoul, Korea for 1 year. Trust me, driving in city traffic really helps you to not kill yourself on a motorcycle.

When I got back to the States, I took the motorcycle course and passed. (also learned couple more tricks)

If you are thinking about getting a bike too, here’s a couple tips I can tell you that has save my life over and over:

1. No matter what, keep your eyes on the road. Once your eyes are not, that’s when you put your life in risk.

2. Learn to use the front and back brakes. I’ve had about a dozen times where my brakes have saved me from crashing big.

3. Look where you want to go. One time, I was going too fast in a corner and almost hit the guard rail. Luckily, I barely got through the corner by looking where I wanted to go.

4. Learn to use your gears to slow down. You can easily brake without even using your brakes on a motorcycle by downshifting rapidly. This will help you avoid accidents by being able to stop quickly coupled with the front and rear brakes.

5. For first timers, I would highly suggest to buy a used bike with less horsepower. The chances are you are going to drop your bike the first time you ride, that better be a used bike, not your new $10,000 bike.

And here’s some more basic tips on mechanics of riding a bike:

1. Hold down your clutch (which is the lever on the left) then hit the start button to start the motorcycle.

2. Slowly engage your throttle (which is the handle on the right) while slowing releasing your clutch. This is something you need to practice a lot to get the feel for. If you drive a manual-transmission equipped car, you can get the idea.

3. You can always brake by pulling on your clutch, then hitting the front brakes (which is lever on the right) and also hitting the back brakes. (your right foot)

4. Learn to slowly accelerate into the corner. You always “accelerate” into a corner, that’s how the motorcycle stays balanced. Master this and you can go really fast around the corners.

P.S. Lastly, riding a motorcycle can be safe only if you take pre-cautions. I know a lot of people who hurt themselves by trying too many things starting out. Just take it slow, it’s your life on the line when you ride a motorcycle, it’s LIFE and DEATH!!!
