Blog DIY – How to Use GooseGrade to Fix Your Blog Post Grammer and Spelling!

GooseGrade one of those friendly companies I talk to at the Web 2.0 Expo this year. It’s a social networking site where people can submit their grammatical/spelling errors to be corrected by members of GooseGrade, who also earn status based on their previous corrections.

(You can read about exactly what the site is about by reading previous reviews from TechCrunch and ReadWriteWeb.)

At the Web 2.0 Expo, GooseGrade has launched a new Wordpress Plugin that will allow your readers and GooseGrade members to correct your blog posts. It’s a free service and if you are always running out of time like me, this Wordpress plugin can help you correct/edit/finalize your blog posts, mostly done by your readers while you approve of their correction if any are found.

I think this is a cool service and more bloggers should take advantage of it. Based on their market research, people tend to visit blogs more often when there are no grammatical/spelling errors. Probably true and I am guilty of not re-checking my blog posts too.

There’s been a lot of rumors that Web 2.0 Expo this year really sucked and I have to agree that there were less innovative companies than last year but it’s a good thing I took my crappy HD camera to take vids of the handfuls that are very, very innovative including this Znak It, launched just 1 day before Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco.

Znak It is a company that focuses on creating pay-as-you-go solution for your e-commerce, blog, or anything you are trying to sell such as “premium” content on your website.

It’s a really good idea since a lot of bloggers have “premium” content they could charge some money for. For example, maybe you have a DIY on how to make a POV golf club, and you wouldn’t be able to find this anywhere else in the world, I am sure people would pay for that content. (not that I would)

Here’s Znak It from their solution page:

Znak it! is quick, intuitive and smart. It does not require repeated log-in/log-out procedures and separate debit or credit card payments every time you want to access designated content. Importantly, Znak it! is also very private and secure. Individual transactions are anonymous to the content provider and other users; however, they are SSL encrypted and easily traceable, helping prevent unauthorized use or fraud.

To capture its simplicity and reliability, think of our virtual Znak as a postage stamp, The Znak it! process is another form of modern micro-payment – like marking a letter or document with a pre-paid stamp. In fact, in a couple of European languages, “znak” means a sign, mark or stamp. And just like the original paper-and-glue postage stamp, our virtual Znak can be used universally, by anyone on the Web, and almost instantly.

From what I’ve seen at their Web 2.0 expo booth, Znak It pretty much allows you to use a virtual currency that people can buy with real money to use on buying other stuff. It’s good because Znak It pretty much takes care of small transactions. (e.g. You can charge 20 cents for your premium content. You couldn’t do that with Paypal since Paypal charges at least 30 cents per transaction.)

If Znak-It gets big enough, it might become a viable alternative to Paypal. As for now, we will have to sit and wait, or even go try it out yourself here.

Well, I have a really long weekend as I worked through the weekend (as usual) but I still have plenty of interviews from Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco to blurt out.

Pringo is a new social networking platform that is compatible with many CMS including Wordpress. From what I can see, you can take your blog to another level by adding Pringo to your blog.

If you are running a blog on Wordpress, you will know that Wordpress lacks community features for social networking. Of course, you can always install Wordpress MU, which does exactly that but for those of us who don’t need a full-fledged blogging platform, Pringo might be the perfect way to engage your readers and bring a live community to your blog.

Pringo has been used on various famous platforms like eHarmony and Yokohama so I see a great value here.

Of course, I’d like to actually see a demo version you can download easily without filling out any forms but I am sure they will work on that for the future.

It’s been a long week as I was attending the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco and had to update a site for a client but here’s the first of many videos I took from the show.

This is actually at Microsoft’s booth, they were featuring their new multi-touch computer, the Microsoft Surface.

I am not usually a fan of Microsoft’s monopoly on operating systems but heck, I do really like this new Multi-Touch from Microsoft, especially this SurfaceDJ app that was being demoed here.

It’s basically a big, giant iPhone pretty much, but too bad it’s still only available for businesses.

The most interesting part that day wasn’t the Microsoft Surface itself but the DJ app on it, SurfaceDJ from VectorForm.

My HD camera was having some Mic problems but you can see this video illustrating the SurfaceDJ app in detail:

The SurfaceDJ lets you basically mix your own music, all without the traditional DJ equipment. A lot of my friends are DJs and this could come in handy for future DJs who could take advantage of the technology.

I dug a little further and found that they have this app for iPhone too already, the SurfaceDJ Lite (free version), and the SurfaceDJ pay version here.

I ran into this nice gentleman, Chris, a co-founder of ThoughtFarmer.com. They provide IntraNet solutions to your company using easy to use web interfaces where your employees and employers can interact within the company w/o using traditional methods of communication such as e-mail and documents.

It’s sorta like a those Enterprise Wikis but the first thing I noticed about their Intranet platform is the quality graphics and simple design as shown here:

The funny thing that happened during the meeting was not the company itself but how they were marketing using some guerilla tactics. Chris showed me how they made this “fake company” all with employee badges and a welcome letter, sent to about 50 well known bloggers. I guess a lot of bloggers founded very creative and funny so they posted it about it such as ReadWriteWeb.

Anyways, you can check out how they did it all at their blog post over here. Next time you use this type of pyro marketing, you can thank me and Chris for it. They actually even paid $5,500 bucks to a marketing firm so get some free marketing tips over at their blog!

Well, I ran into this nice lady who explained how VisualCV works at the Web 2.0 Expo.

I think it’s a really good idea that they’ve actually made resume into a Web2.0ish interactive media.

It’s basically a free service that let’s you build resumes for yourself or even companies.

Instead of sending attachments, now you can simply point to your online resume as mine here:

(I made it in about 5 minutes)

The greatest part about this VisualCV is that it comes loaded with widgets and AJAX drag and drop technology, so you can easily build a cool looking resume in just 5 minutes. (provided you already have an offline resume to copy and paste like me)

Anyways, check it out as these guys also even let you embed YouTube videos into your resume, how cool is that? Another great feature is that there’s a PDF converter so your new employers can download the resume as PDF in a snap.

Of course, some of you guys are good enough to create all this from scratch but you do also get good online visibility of your resume on the site itself as VisualCV grows.

Here’s a recap of great stuff I learned through attending the Web 2.0 Expo 2008 in San Francisco this week.

All these companies are building new mass collaboration “online” web apps that are basically easy to use and built on wiki platforms.

Semantic Web is an idea that’s often talked by Web 2.0 junkies. It’s basically the idea of mass collaboration and “human” powered technologies. A lot of companies have already built this type of technology using wikis. (Basically it’s wikis becoming as easy to use as blogs. Don’t get too confused, it’s a simple idea.)

FYI, SpringNote.com is a subsidiary of NcSoft.com, the creators of legendary online game, Lineage.

Well, I tried out SpringNote, here’s a screenshot:

It’s very simple to use, just like a real notebook except you have unlimited number of pages plus you get bunch of already-made templates like Bookshelf, Monthly Plan, Recipe, and etc…etc…

What I found most interesting was that it is a “wiki” site but you don’t need to know any wiki markup language and start editing your online notes right away. You also have the option to share your notes or keep them private.

As far as technology goes, I love the fact that SpringNote has incorporated a LOT of AJAX. (probably mostly AJAX)

I might start using it more real soon. The only downside I saw was that SpringNote’s servers are hosted in Korea. Although the site does fairly fast, I measured, 168ms ping times from my PC in San Francisco.

FYI, Zedomax.com get 41ms ping times, 4 times faster as servers are hosted in San Diego, California.

Although they could keep running servers from Korea, I think they can grab much larger audience in the U.S. by simply serving their pages from servers in the U.S. (Besides, it’s probably much cheaper to host it here.)

Other than that, I find SpringNote as the next generation online note web app. I will have to dump my MS Outlook all together and start using SpringNotes, way simpler and easier for mass collaboration.

Web2.0 Expo 2008 – Adobe Flex, will it be the next Web3.0?

Adobe Flex, will it be the next generation technology for Web 3.0? It’s hard to tell at this point as SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for flash or flex has not proven to be great. Although you could make an opinion that flash or flex can be embedded in an HTML page, that’s still no where close to RSS and tags that blogs offer.

Today, I met when Steven (Stephen) Harris from WebSpiders.com, a Global IT Outsourcing company that specializes in development of Adobe Flex and AJAX web applications.

Steven was nice enough to show me a demo of how Flex will change how people shop online:

P.S. Excel Man was also spotted over at Expressocorp.com’s booth. (Now I think of it, there’s a guy inside it. Tomorrow, I will punch the Excel Man and see if I can get a reaction.)

I was taking a smoke break in front of Web2.0 Expo and saw these people marching with funky white wigs on. Well, at first I thought they were protesting but one of the protestors did reach out and speak to me about what’s behind their “guerilla campaign” as seen in the video below.

So, I decided to try out what this “protest” was all about by logging into their website with my “private beta” invitation that you can only get from Web2.0 Expo.

First I logged in and got a blank screen with bunch of tools such as “File”, “Node”, etc…etc…

I started clicking on “Node” and making bunch of “Nodes” like this:

If you double-click on any of the nodes, you can edit the node, enter information, hyperlinks, just like a Word editor.

Now, they had a export to PDF feature, so I figured what the heck, might as well find out what my “Nodes” look like in a PDF file.

As you can see below, SpinScape is something so new, I can’t even tell you what it is except that it allows you to write documents in a completely a new way. They even have options to add Google widgets and all sorts of other stuff you can do like “import” Excel files as “Nodes”, so you can see how all that data connects to each other. Not only that, this new type of “digital collaboration” tool allows multi-users to edit the “Nodes”, sorta like a Wiki morphed with some fancy Adobe Flex technology. It seems like a lot of companies are starting to use the Flex technology. Now, if you can incorporate a good way to get SEO with Flex, that’d be the killer Web 3.0 app we will be talking about over the next decade. (Mind you, Flex IS faster than AJAX. AJAX is better in terms of SEO though…)

Well, as far as I can tell, SpinScape.com’s guerilla marketing/protesting outside the Web 2.0 Expo is certainly working well. You should try it as the site has just launched. (Use the invite code shown in the video above!)

I might go back tomorrow to capture some more of what’s coming up in “Web 2.0″ companies. The greatest part about Web 2.0 Expo is that a lot of companies are using the event to launch their new products, such as SpinScape.com or TellMe launching their new Blackberry service.

Heck, we might even turn this blog into a big review site for what’s up and coming with Web2.0 and beyond. (Yeah, let me do that now…)

Web 2.0 Expo 2008 – TellMe Voice-Activated Yellow Pages just launched for Blackberry!

Hi All,

It’s Web 2.0 Expo 2008 this week so I headed over to Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco. Luckily, I was able to grab a free Press pass from Natalia Wodeck from TechWeb.com. (Thank you Natalia, very appreciated!)

First company we will be covering at Web 2.0 Expo 2008 is TellMe.com, a subsidiary of Microsoft that develops voice-activated mobile apps for cellphones.

TellMe has just launched their voice activated service for Blackberries, including Blackberry 8830, which I use personally.

Anyways, TellMe has basically extended the basic “voice-activated” functionality of the Blackberry to connect to Live search and also use the GPS service to pinpoint directions to your desired location whether that’s a mexican restaurant, club, or a bar.

I’d say kudos for this type of technology as it’s much better than calling an 800 number. (I am referring to Google’s 411 service.)

Although not a too big fan of the parent company, Microsoft, I am surprised that TellMe is available first on Blackberries and they are “still” working on TellMe service for Microsoft’s Mobile powered cellphones. (Kudos for that! They actually care about users more than monopolizing mobile OSes.)

If you are on your mobile phone, go to http://m.tellme.com on your phone’s browser and download TellMe.

It looks like Microsoft is trying to kill two birds with one stone, targeting Google’s 411 service and GoogleMaps with this TellMe aquisition. Well, I am not biased at all so let the best be the winner here!
