Google Chrome Open Source Operating System!

Google has shed some new light on their Google Chrome operating system, which we have been hearing about for months now. Currently the Chrome OS supports netbooks, especifically an EEE PC. (you can download the source here)

According to TechCrunch:

We’re not going to go into too much detail about going to market today. We’re working on the software right now, but we are also working with manufacturers on the hardware level. For example, we only support solid-state drives and certain types of WiFi cards.

Well, there should be someone hacking it real soon and hopefully we can get hands on a how-to install article soon.

TV Remote Powered with Kinetic Energy!

NEC, the Japanese consumer electronics company, is having a blast developing TV remotes that work off kinetic energy, meaning it needs no batteries at all. The kinetic energy derived from the user picking up the remote itself and pushing buttons are apparently enough to power the remote itself. Well, why didn’t they make this earlier, think of how much energy could have been save in the last 20 years. I am sure the cost of making one of these remotes is still very high but good innovation, I can see the rest of the world following NEC’s steps now.

“Your credit balance is over the limit” – Vodafone & Verizon E-Mail Virus/Spyware!

Here’s a quick alert for those of you on Vodafone or Verizon getting e-mails such as “Your credit balance is over the limit”. I guess it’s an e-mail scam to download some malware to your computer so just mark it SPAM!

Anyone who does happen to download the so called Balance Checker will open up a backdoor in their computer where other malicious software can be downloaded from the Zbot botnet.

“There is a danger that unsuspecting mobile phone owners might fall for the trap, perhaps convinced by the use of Vodafone’s logo which is embedded in the email, and launch the file attachment, thus infecting their computers” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos,

The version of this Trojan is detected by Sophos’ products as Mal/Zbot-P.

The Zbot botnet is infamous for capturing online banking details and emptying bank accounts, which can be highly lucrative for the spammers.

Windows 7 Not Working Well for Netbooks?

In my recent testing of Windows 7 Ultimate with a Triple-Core AMD and 4GB of memory, it performed flawlessly for installing all my XP/Vista programs plus ran about 3-5X faster for rendering HD videos. Well, it seems like Windows 7 has been reported to not work well with netbooks.

This figure is somewhat surprising actually as Microsoft hasn’t tried to keep that fact hidden; indeed they have openly said that Windows 7 starter edition won’t be able to do everything.

The problem seems to lie in the fact that most of the new netbooks on sale are running with the starter edition and upgrading to the more sophisticated Windows 7 Home Premium version is going to cost somewhere in the region of $80, something than many are not happy to pay.

Plus, most of these netbooks are coming with starter editions, meaning the users have to pay for an upgrade.

I don’t think it’s a big hurdle for those of you who know how to downgrade to XP, I don’t really see any advantages of running Windows 7 on netbooks anyways. With limitations in hardware, netbooks weren’t designed for full computing but rather for simply web browsing and things you need to get done on the go.

Of course, for me, I will be getting a slightly beefed up version of ASUS EEE PC netbooks, which is the 13.3″ ASUS UL30A with 12 hours of battery life, 4GB of memory, and a Intel Dual-Core ULV processor.

The word on the street is that USB 3.0 flash drives are coming soon near December(that’s next month!). Thanks Greg for the tip!

Snow Leopard Updates will Kill Hackintosh Netbooks with Atom Processors!

I have no idea why Apple wants to have such a tight grip on their products, even controlling down to the processors you can use on their operating systems. A lot of people have been using Apple operating systems on x86 and non-Apple CPUs, which I see a big market for Apple. Well, I hope they realize their lesson someday, one of the main reasons Apple went sour in the 90s is because Apple had a tight grip on the software industry. I remember I bought a PC simply because there were so many more options such as different hardware/software, you name it.

Well, I still haven’t bought an Apple in my whole lifetime, guess that “adds” to their growing empire. :p

There are more than a few folk out there who believe that by releasing the new non Atom compatible updates, Apple is attempting to kill off the Hackintosh Netbook community.

This could well be something they might be keen to do, especially if the rumoured soon to make an appearance Apple Tablet is on its way.

Of course this is all speculation but the advice from StellaRolla, according to a report in Wired, is that if you have a Hackintosh don’t try and download the updates or your Hackintosh will break, at the moment anyway.

Well, I am one of those people who will literally take all the candy from the mall stores on Halloween. This year, Apple Store (ran out of candy I though) gave me an Apple bookmark. I actually confirmed that it wasn’t just me, I guess they were doing this all over the States. I think it’s a good bookmark, perhaps they were also (*evil*) trying to promote their Nano iPods. Well, I am not complaining, I didn’t have to treat them this year.

Here’s some positive news regarding the recession economy we have been facing for the last couple years, seems like it’s picking up a bit. Well, we won’t know for sure until next year but still a great sign of recovery.

Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) — The U.S. economy returned to growth in the third quarter after a yearlong contraction as government incentives spurred consumers to spend more on homes and cars.

The world’s largest economy expanded at a 3.5 percent pace from July through September, figures from the Commerce Department showed today in Washington. Household purchases climbed 3.4 percent, the most in two years.

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala is introduced today, I might have to try it out soon. I don’t think there’s too many upgrades from the last version but according to Engadget, the Ubuntu features:

featuring a faster graphical boot sequence (no more scary text scrolls), a revamped audio framework that improves sound control across multiple applications, and a new Software Center that visually simplifies the Add/Remove Applications tool. These are just a few of the user-centric improvements meant to have a “transformative effect” on the OS experience and help bring “the world of open source closer to the user.”

Not bad I think, probably a much better option than Windows 7, that’s for sure.

Google has just announced that every UK resident can now read their electricity and other energy usage in real-time using Google’s Powermeter.

Since yesterday, every resident in the United Kingdom can now watch how much energy they use on a daily basis using Google’s PowerMeter.

Google (GOOG) has announced the launch of PowerMeter with UK’s only energy supplier first-utility.

For one, this allows every UK resident to be aware of exactly how much energy they are using provided in real-time via PowerMeter and hopefully, save energy over months to come.

According to Mark Daeche, first:utility’s CEO, “At the end of the day, if you can’t measure and view your energy use, it’s very difficult to make savings.”

Google has just announced GoogleMaps Navigation for Android platform smartphones like the G1 Phone and more. I think this is going to be big in the next few years and definitely take a big chunk out of the current on-board GPS market.

I think this is actually good for the GPS navigation business since more competition means lower prices and better GPS systems. Even now, I see all these outdated GPS systems on new cars, they simply can’t compete against even my Palm Pre’s (or Blackberry’s) GoogleMaps.

Xerox has developed a new ink that lets you “print” your circuit boards on paper. Not only will this make DIY PCBs obsolete, you can now make circuit boards that are flexible as paper. WOW!

Xerox researchers have invented a kind of ink that can conduct electricity and be used to put electronic circuits on top of plastics, film, and textiles. That means in the coming years we’ll be able to wear or bend our electronics. You could even print out your electronic gadget on plastic sheets, as if you were printing a document.

Solar Car Racing Taking Off in Australia!

Solar car racing is happening in Australia, I think this would be a great movement towards future commercial solar cars. I don’t think we are that far away especially with the number of hybrid cars out there already with Prius already applying some solar panels. I would love to own a solar race car one day.

SYDNEY — A 3,000-kilometre (1,860-mile) solar car race across Australia’s desert heartland began in the northern city of Darwin Sunday, organisers said.

The cars left Darwin in hot and humid weather at about 8:30 am (2300 GMT Saturday) on the journey that is expected to end mid-week in the South Australian city of Adelaide.

“We had 32 vehicles start this morning,” Mike Drewer, a spokesman for the World Solar Challenge, told AFP, adding that weather conditions were good for solar cars.

Windows 7 Upgrades Available Now

For those of you who have read the Top 10 reasons why XP will be around longer and still want to fiddle with Windows 7, you can as Windows 7 upgrades are now officially available:

Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade – $119.99
Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade – $219.99
Windows 7 Professional Upgrade – $199.99

For the record, you will need to get the Windows 7 Ultimate if you want language support for international languages. For myself, I need Korean support since I do often and on write to some of my old friends in Korea. XP supported this natively on the Home and Pro versions so that means you will shell out more for that.

I think if you are an early adaptor, get it now but if you are happy with your current setup, don’t waste your time upgrading, just wait until at least Windows 7 SP2 comes out.

As for me, I will be getting a new netbook anyways, I will get it along with that.

Lately I have been sorta addicted with the latest Canon EOS DSLR news as I am planning to get one myself soon. Engadget reports that the Canon EOS 1D Mark V might be available soon, like tomorrow!

we’re now hearing that Canon just might be readying a new pro-level DSLR for a Tuesday launch. The long-awaited successor to the EOS 1D Mark III is reportedly on the way, and considering that the Japanese do everything they possibly can to avoid the number four (it’s pronounced the same as the word for death, if you must know), the EOS 1D Mark V is the only plausible candidate.

Broadband Still Lacking in the U.S.!

I have to admit, my Comcast cable DSL is pretty darn fast, fast enough for me to get things done but it’s never fast enough as the fiber-optic networked 300Mbps that virtually every household in South Korea is getting.

Every year, I talk to one of my friends in South Korea. 3 years ago, I asked my friend, “so, how fast is your internet now?” He replies, “I get 100Mbps at my apartment, they’ve got fiber-optics connected to the central network in Seoul.”

Couple days ago, I asked my friend again the same question, he replies, “I get somewhere around 300Mbps in my apartment, South Korea has upgraded their network every year.”

Of course, you have to think about how much easier it is to setup fiber-optic cables all across South Korea while the States would take at least 50-100 times more wires.

Besides, that their mobile broadband is also 50 times faster with WiMax.

So what?

I am just complaining that the U.S. is falling behind the world broadband race. I am surprised that the U.S. has interstate highways all over America (which something no other country in the world can copy), yet the internet infrastructure is no where in comparison.

Google Trike, I want one!

Google Trike may be one of the first signs that Google may indeed planning to take photographs of virtually everything that exists on earth today. (well, maybe they will eventually go into space someday, we will never know)

Google is actually offering visitors to submit places that you want the Google Trike to go such as amusement parks, zoos, or anywhere a Google Trike can go. (and Google Van can’t. I’ve actually submitted one myself, the SF Zoo. I just don’t see why a zoo in Japan is already on GoogleMaps in ultra high-res while my local SF Zoo (which is one of the best zoos in California) isn’t discoverable on GoogleMaps. Well, so goes my wishes to Googlers. (And yes, I LOVE ANIMALS! I feel like I am one too!)

Google Trike may be also be a great idea for building one yourself to take continuous photos of where you travel to. (on the trike that is…)

I think Google also may offer some jobs to people to for riding the Google Trike around, that maybe one of the best jobs out there, look for it at your local job posting. (or craiglist)

Wow, I am impressed, the South Koreans are really creating a new standard for smartphones. Clearly, the new LG Chocolate phone going by model numbers LG-SU630, LG-KU6300, and LU6300 are right on the mark for the next revolution of iPhone killers.

Like the new line of Samsung W8500, this new LG Chocolate features a whopping 800×345 pixel WVGA AMOLED LCD, plays DivX movies, a whopping 8 megapixel camera, and a 3D GUI. (Launched 9/29/09)

It looks like this phone has been launched since only about a week ago so, we should expect it here in the States about next year.

While Apple has been fighting over Google for VOIP in the US over its over-marketed iPhones, South Koreans have been enjoying the future of smartphones, AMOLED-based phones with NVIDIA chip that can play DivX videos like this flawlessly: (and also stream very fast using WiMax) Also, the phone comes with GPS navigation, 5 megapixel camera w/ cropping software, SRS surround sound, and more it looks like.

*Note – Compare WVGA AMOLED 800×480 pixel LCD on the Samsung versus 480×320 pixel LCD on an iPhone 3GS. Sorry, I am definitely not an Apple fan boy.

Samsung AMOLED SPH-W8500 – Looking at the Future!

This particular model is the SPH-W8500. According to Reuters, Sprint will be rolling out phones similar to this NEXT YEAR. Well, there goes the fun. South Korea is always about 1-2 years ahead of all the new Samsung phones we actually see in the States. Perhaps, I will have to bring one back next time I go to Korea.

What is AMOLED? See here on Wikipedia:

AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) is an emerging display technology for use in mobile devices like mobile phones. OLED describes a specific type of ultra thin, ultra bright display technology which doesn’t require a backlight and Active-Matrix refers to the technology behind the addressing of pixels. AMOLED technology continues to make progress towards low-power and low-cost large size (e.g. 40-inch) for applications such as TV.

iPhone users, don’t fret that your phone is really actually way behind the world. I don’t think iPhone will get anywhere near there for another 2 years at least.

Montblanc’s Gandhi Pen Sells for $23,000!

Today’s subject, “Montblanc’s Gandhi Pen”. Oh Gawd, they are using one of history’s honorable figures as part of their marketing scheme, a pen that sells for $23,000.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Montblanc pens too but not for this pen, it’s simply *disgusting* marketing ploy as far as I can tell.

You know what I think, I think Gandhi would be very very proud. (*sarcastic*)

Perhaps aware of the potential for a backlash, Montblanc made a $145,666 donation to the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation even before selling a single pen, said Tushar Gandhi, Gandhi’s great-grandson, from Amsterdam, where he visited a Mont Blanc boutique that had already sold three pens. The funds are to be used to build a school and home for rescued child workers. The foundation also gets as much as $1,000 for each pen sold.

Can you believe it? The foundation only gets $1000 for every $23K pen sold, that’s only 4.3%. If they donated at least 50%, I would understand but that’s not it.

I am not Indian, but I think this is disgraceful to Gandhi and his reputation. It simply doesn’t make sense to me that you can sell Gandhi’s reputation away like that, just my 2 cents on the matter.

Wow, take a look at this video of these 5 “professional” burglars who stole 23 MacBook Pros in just 31 seconds! That is impressive regardless of what they did. These thieves must have done speed lap training beforehand.

Now, I am not saying you should ever steal anything but if you are going to be a burglar, you gotta be as fast as these guys and be smart. (I feel like I am watching a mini-version of ocean’s eleven…)

I’ve seen so many dumb criminals on COPS, it’s a relief that the media finally lets some truth through, that there are a lot of smart criminals out there. I truly wish there’s a live national show called THIEVES that also show how many criminals get away with things. (not that I promote that kind of stuff but I just don’t want to see dumb people on TV!!! I rather see the ALL OF IT! Wouldn’t you? That is why I don’t watch COPS.) I think the more people know about the truth, the better they will be prepared for it instead of lying in the dark. (and freaking out when stuff like this happens.)

As for Apple, I think they need to tighten up the security, I am sure they can easily install some software on the MacBooks so they can “trace” those laptops. I can’t believe that Apple store didn’t even have laptop locks at the least, that’s a shame on Apple, shame indeed.

It’s also the fancy glass doors that don’t do anything but leave the store vulnerable to thieves. (And I am sure we will start seeing some metal doors at Apple Stores soon.)

FYI, glass can easily be broken by throwing the ceramic from spark plugs. (something I learned from one of my old pals who used to be a real gangster in LA. I wouldn’t use it for stealing but would be a great idea for getting yourself out of your car if you drive your car into the water somehow.)

In a sense, it’s like you don’t have a virus protection on your computer and you complain when you get a virus.

In a sense, if you have vulnerability, it’s going to be exploited of course! Glass doors are probably the dumbest things to have at a store that sells gadget items ranging couple thousand bucks each.

For comparison, I hate shopping for gadgets at Wal-mart. All of their laptops on display are non-working plastic models, not even REAL laptops! Now I see why they do it.

Again, I think these criminals are probably a lot smarter than Steve Jobs, they probably won’t catch them.

Even, Engadget calls these thieves, “impressive”.

The ABC reporter, Dan Cuellar in the video below calls it, “spectacular”.

I am getting a sense that people are supporting this, am I right?

What do you think, impressive or should they be punished?

As for me, Apple deserves at least this for “forcing” iPods into proprietary audio files i.nstead of worldwide accepted MP3s.

After all the millions of dollars they racked in from iPods and iPhones, this isn’t really big news, maybe just a pimple on their face.

Face it. This all could easily have been avoided if you locked all the display laptops in a secure storage area before you close the store. (and it can obviously be done pretty quickly, less than a minute it seems.) Hmmm… I wonder why jewelry stores do that, does anyone have any ideas? (Sarcastic)

iPhone Killer IS HERE!!! – Palm Pre WAAAAAAY better than iPhone!

Well, after 2 years of 24/7 use on my Sprint Blackberry 8830, my Blackberry kept flickering and resetting, causing me to get a new phone.

Well, it turns out that Sprint had the Palm Pre out for over a month now and I was sorta skeptical on how well the Palm Pre would perform.

I actually wanted to wait for the new Blackberry and they HAD the new Blackberry Tour, but I couldn’t let go of the fact that Palm Pre was linux-based and also can be hacked as a Wifi router.

Of course, I didn’t really believe all the hype about Palm Pre because there were so many ads online before they launched it.

My end goal was to find a next-generation phone that had a physical QWERTY keyboard so I can browse the web while I drive. Yes, it is dangerous act to do that but I am a blogger and I MUST browser the web while I drive my car on the highway at 85MPH.

Anyways, I headed to the nearest Sprint Store after reading about the Palm Pre on Engadget and also watching this video on the Palm Pre Wifi Router. I was actually going to get the new iPhone if Palm Pre didn’t live up to my high standards but it blew the doors off the iPhone!

At the store, first thing I did was to load up my blog, of course. It loaded up blazingly fast and very impressive.

Second thing I noticed is that the Palm Pre’s size, it’s waaay smaller than an iPhone and my old Blackberry 8830, plus you get a physical QWERTY keyboard that pops out. For busy people who constantly use the phone to e-mail, this is definitely a feature you need. I am not going to be happy trying to use a touchscreen keyboard and that is another reason why I did not get the Blackberry Storm when it came out.

Well, after doing some testing at the Sprint Store, I just grabbed one and was out of there in about 10 minutes. Talk about fast service, the guy Christopher at the Sprint Store near San Leandro got me out of there in just 10 minutes, that was the fastest time ever that I had my phone activated. The best part is that I didn’t even pay for the phone, they simply “billed” me for the next month.

Anyways, the Palm Pre is ALL that. I know a lot of iPhone users might get jealous but I think Sprint and Palm did a fantastic job of coming out with the “new iPhone” that I can certainly call the new iPhone.

Is it an iPhone Killer?

Yes, this surely is the next step up for people who despise AT&T’s slow 3G connection. I do hear that AT&T is faster in the mid-west or the east but I know for a fact that AT&T is really, really slow in the SF Bay Area.

Aside from speed, the Palm Pre is smaller than an iPhone.

For business people, iPhone is not such a great choice but the Palm Pre is. The Palm Pre comes loaded with awesome apps such as its default email app that can automatically synchronize GMAIL, Yahoo, MSN, and many other e-mail services just by entering your e-mail and password.

Seriously, for me, I need a cellphone that allows me to more efficient. iPhone doesn’t make me efficient because it’s slow and the touchscreen keyboard simply doesn’t make sense when I am trying to close a big deal with my client.

From entertainment point of view, the Palm Pre rocks as it can load YouTube videos flawlessly with crisp and clear sound/display. I have used many of my friend’s iPhones but they don’t load as fast as the Palm Pre. I even have a iPod Touch but Palm Pre beats it hands down even with its EDVO/3G service. (not even WiFi!!!) P.S. My video review doesn’t show the real crisp/clearness of my Palm Pre but I will have an updated video with my other camcorder.

There’s probably a gazillion more features I have to mention but let me end with the fact that the Palm Pre comes with 7 gigabytes of storage, which is plenty for people like me who use the phone to browse the web and run online business.

The most important factor going with the Palm Pre would be its Linux-based operating system. You can actually SSH into the terminal and install a whole lotta open source software. Palm made a smart choice by going with Linux as the app developers won’t have to rebuild the wheel, there’s already billions of free linux open source software that developers can build on. I, too, will be developing some cool Palm Pre apps real soon over at my new blog that I just registered at PalmPre-Hacks.com. (Should be open tomorrow…)

As someone who constantly messes with Linux apps, Palm Pre proved to be a really great choice. The T-mobile Gphone is great too for open source but T-mobile is still a pretty small company and their mobile internet is much slower than Sprint. (which is why I kept waiting….)

My patience for a new iPhone-killer phone has paid off, I have to say iPhone is already old. The Palm Pre practically does everything that an iPhone can do and WAAAY more potential.

Apple has been true innovator of technology but their sleezy tactics of making MP3s into proprietary files has turned me off. Even then, the Palm Pre can sync with your iTunes just as well as an iPhone.

Boy I am loving this phone, it can do almost 27 simultaneous windows!!!

Little bit more before I head away, the Palm Pre’s GoogleMaps is FLAWLESS and super fast compared to an iPhone or even my Blackberry 8830.

I also have to point out that the Palm Pre can be re-charged via a USB cable, that’s something I really need so I can charge my phone everywhere without having to spend on extra chargers like the iPhone.

Seriously, if you have been looking for a new phone that is better than the iPhone, you gotta go check it out at your nearest Sprint Store. I don’t work for Sprint nor do they pay me for blogging about them but I have been highly impressed with what kind of products and services Sprint has been delivering for the last couple years. Palm Pre has been an exceptionally well designed phone that will probably take a big bite out of Apple’s iPhone market in the next 1-2 years.

Once Sprint rolls out WiMAX all over the country by end of next year, I don’t think AT&T will be around anymore.

YES! I GOT THE PALM PRE!!! DO YOU HAVE ONE?

My favorite cellphone has never been and probably will never be a Sony Ericsson, simply due to the fact that I have never seen a good Sony cellphone yet in my lifetime. But Sony is however working on a Android phone that might change all that, the Sony Ericsson “Rachael”.

The XPERIA-based Sony Ericsson device codenamed “Rachael” will feature a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, HSDPA and an 8 megapixel camera, and from what we can tell from the images a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Hackers Attack South Korea and the White House!

I know for a fact that millions of hackers live in South Korea, where even FBI can’t even get to. Here’s a bunch of interesting news that hackers have attacked the South Korean government websites and also the White House.

Well, my best tip is that you need to really strengthen the firewall but whatever.

Also there’s speculation that North Korea might be behind this hacker attack. I just think hackers are hackers, they do this for fun.

Researchers who are following the attacks said that they began July 4 and focused on the small group of United States government Web sites, but that the list later expanded to include commercial sites in the United States and then commercial and government sites in South Korea. Files stored on computers that are part of the attacking system show that 27 Web sites are now targets.

In South Korea, at least 11 major sites have slowed or crashed since Tuesday, including those of the presidential Blue House, the Defense Ministry, the National Assembly, Shinhan Bank, the mass-circulation newspaper Chosun Ilbo and the top Internet portal Naver.com, according to the government’s Korea Information Security Agency.

On Wednesday, some of the South Korean sites regained service, but others remained unstable or inaccessible.

DIY Robot Ramen Replaces Chef in Japan!

Here’s an interesting story of a ramen-making DIY robot that can make up to 40 million different flavors of ramen. As an avid eater of Korean and Japanese ramen, this is the most perfect idea for making ramen as robots can do them flawlessly, there’s no reason why anyone ever needs chefs for ramen anymore.

The ramen-making robot was built by 60-year-old shop owner Yoshihira Uchida, who spent about 20 million yen on its construction. Customers can place their orders on a computer in the shop, customizing various aspects such as the levels of soy sauce, salt, and richness of the soup. Uchida says there are 40 million different flavor permutations.

The noodles themselves are cooked by a human, with the robot creating a perfectly blended soup which is then delivered to the human chef via a conveyor belt, who adds the noodles and toppings. The whole process takes only about two minutes, a minute shorter than instant cup noodles. Prices of ramen per bowl are 500 yen for regular size and 300 yen for small size.

Francesco Fondi, of the Italian site Hobby Media, sent us a link to a story about Giulio B, an Italian narc jailed in Spain, who attempted a prison break using this small dirigible. The site’s in Italian, but I gather the R/C craft was supposed to fly into the prison, with the payload of tools seen in the last image. A narc in prison? I bet he’s anxious to float out of there.

I actually know someone who does insurance fraud stuff on consistent basis. Just remember, “what you do will come back to you ten fold whether that’s good or bad.”

Green Blog Post Update!

XM’s New Portable Satellite Radio Device – codename Phoenix!

Well, as soon as this new portable satellite radio device is out, we’d probably no longer need to get a separate one for our cars, homes, etc…etc… We should be able to take it wherever we want to go, just like an iPod.

According to sources, the XM Phoenix is slightly smaller than the existing Inno with a much slicker interface and a rotating wheel that functions similar to the beloved SkyFi2. It features a MicroSD slot for external music (not for transfer of XM recordings, of course) and the internal storage space might have been increased (not sure exactly how much, if any).

The screen size is larger than the current Inno, but the antenna looks similar/identical to the Inno’s. Details on whether or not the device has WiFi are still fuzzy.

The Phoenix is supposed to hit the streets in Fall. As more details come in, such as the final name of the device, I’ll be sure to post them here.

Wow, I have been hearing news about Neda, this 27 year old girl who got shot and killed in Iran for protesting. I think there’s got to be someone who’s going to have to step up and end this merciless bs by the Iranian government.

This isn’t a political war any more, it’s about human rights. You don’t kill a girl for protesting peacefully, no matter what she’s protesting about, especially if she has no weapons to fight back.

I know this is a tech blog but at times like this I wish I can grab a bazooka and blow the face of whoever is the cause behind this.

My take on this whole voting bs? I think the President of Iran who cheated should step down if he’s going to be anywhere near honorable, otherwise he will go down in history as the most notorious killer of Iran. What a peace of dirt, I just wish politicians would actually care for even one person’s life let alone a whole country. I am pretty sure someone will assassinate him soon or later for being the lowest piece of crap in the world. When that day comes, Neda will be happy even if she’s not here with us.

I guess “Neda” means “voice”, perhaps this was meant to be, perhaps people of Iran will keep fighting until they win. Heck, I am not Iranian but at these moments, I do feel for such cause. Rest in peace Neda.

In the last year or so, 20% of all damaged iPhones in the world have FAILED due to the cracking of its screens. Even Nintendo has added a protective silicon cover for their Wiimotes since they have been crackin’ up HDTVs like it’s no big thang. Well, Apple better do something and put some protective iPhone covers as default otherwise they may be cheating the consumers. (to buy new iPhones!)

Even my Blackberry has been dropped about 50 times in the last 2 years and no screen has broken. Perhaps, iPhone design is great for touch but not so much for insurance against crackin’.

Oh boy, I see a class action suit coming to Apple by angry iPhone owners who’s iPhone screen cracks after 3 months of use… at least it should pay for new iPhones.

A new report from SquareTrade details the accident-prone nature of Apple’s line of smartphones, reporting that over 20% of iPhones have been damaged in the last 22 months. Cracked screens abound.

The new iPhone 3G S will probably be torn apart and posted all over the internet with its true specs but looks like T-mobile has released some of the specs which Apple has not:

The relevant numbers are 256MB RAM for the OS, double that of the 128MB in the original iPhone, and a 600MHz processor, up from the pedestrian 412MHz of the first two models. The added RAM alone probably makes a huge difference — if you have ever added memory to a Mac you’ll know how much OS X loves it some extra gigs to play around in. And that processor neatly leapfrogs the second-gen iPod Touch’s 532MHz. It also shuts up anyone comparing the iPhone to the Palm Pre, which has the exact same number of megahertz: 600.

Microsoft’s New Ads Imply Macs are Too Expensive!

Lol, Microsoft is implying that Apple Macs are too expensive on their new ads, as seen in this vid. It’s true though, I “still” have bought 1 Mac in my whole entire life, that was for one of the graphic designers I hired, not for me. Of course, I will always need the extra features that PC give me, (ironic huh saying this and coming from a person who doesn’t like Windows) there’s so much more you can do on a PC.

Of course, I will never be satisfied with Windows, the operating system, but yes, PCs will always rule and that doesn’t mean Windows is good though, but Intel/AMD CPUs and the hardware that runs it is very good…

I just don’t want to spend over $2000-3000 on a Mac, when I can get like 3-4 PC laptops worth $600 each. Besides, it’s wiser to buy a $600 every year rather than shelling out your wallet at one-time, which you will regret when your $3000 laptop is worth less than half of its original price the year after. Btw, I did buy a $2000 HP laptop every year. Not because the HP laptops were slow, they all DIED. No more HP laptops for next 10 years I think… (for me.)

That’s right, it’s a not-Mac! I mean, it’s an HP! It’s hard to keep track, since the only complaint the commercial brings up is that Giampaolo (henceforth referred to as “John”) wants to pay for the components, and not the brand. And that’s a fairly reasonable point of view, according to our study of the infamous “Apple Tax.” It’s true, John simply cannot buy a new MacBook with, say, 4GB of memory for under $1,500. But as any Apple fanboy knows, with Apple, your premium pays for the software, and for Microsoft (primarily a software company!) to take the position that software has no impact on value is an odd choice.

New Samsung HD Camcorder SMX-C14!

Samsung releases their new HD camcorder SMX-C14 and SMX-C10, both HD camcorders come with 16GB of internal memory plus SD card slots for expansion. I’ve seen a big array of great HD cameras lately, but I don’t think none of them are as great as far as price and function are concerned. These HD cams are only available in South Korea right now, I might have to fly over there to pick one up next week.

The SMX-C14 and SMX-C10 also incorporate Samsung’s play-edit-sharing program called intelli studio. The built-in intelli-studio program allows consumers to connect the camcorder to any computer via USB and edit and play their video without having to install supporting software. intelli-studio also facilitates the process of uploading users’ content to popular video sharing Web sites. For added convenience, a one-touch upload button, available directly on the SMX-C14 and SMX-C10, provides a direct connection to YouTube, further reducing the number of steps needed to upload footage. In addition, the camcorders also allow basic on-camera editing, including the ability to merge and split video files.

Sprint Novatel’s MiFi 2200 Portable EV-DO Router Coming Soon!

Sprint will be rolling out their new EV-DO router where you can make any location a Wi-Fi hotspot. Now, this still will be very slow since EV-DO is barely fast enough for one computer.

However, there is advantage where the router can be “placed” on your roof to ensure EV-DO coverage even in remote locations like in the mountain. I am sure you’ve had similar experiences where your broadband USB simply doesn’t cut it.

My recommendation is hold onto your money for right now in this hard economy and keep waiting for Wi-MAX, which will be at least 10 times faster than EV-DO.

MiFi creates a personal cloud of high-speed Internet connectivity that can be easily shared among up to five users and a variety of WiFi-enabled devices through its connection to America’s most dependable 3G network,* the EVDO Rev A Sprint Mobile Broadband Network. For example:

College student: a college student tucks her MiFi 2200 in her backpack to study with friends at the park and uses it to listen to streaming radio on her MP3 player while she connects to the school’s Intranet on her laptop to get details on a class assignment. She takes a break to take pictures of her pals with her Wi-Fi enabled digital camera, and the camera uses the MiFi’s signal to upload the photos to Facebook while she emails her completed report to her professor, then uses the device’s GPS capability to find a nearby pizza place for lunch.

Business travelers: Two business travelers share a cab to the airport, then wait for their flight. Sharing the signal of one MiFi 2200 device that is safely tucked away in a briefcase, they download emails and surf the Internet on their notebooks and stream music to their MP3 players.

Blog DIY – How to Use GooseGrade to Fix Your Blog Post Grammer and Spelling!

GooseGrade one of those friendly companies I talk to at the Web 2.0 Expo this year. It’s a social networking site where people can submit their grammatical/spelling errors to be corrected by members of GooseGrade, who also earn status based on their previous corrections.

(You can read about exactly what the site is about by reading previous reviews from TechCrunch and ReadWriteWeb.)

At the Web 2.0 Expo, GooseGrade has launched a new Wordpress Plugin that will allow your readers and GooseGrade members to correct your blog posts. It’s a free service and if you are always running out of time like me, this Wordpress plugin can help you correct/edit/finalize your blog posts, mostly done by your readers while you approve of their correction if any are found.

I think this is a cool service and more bloggers should take advantage of it. Based on their market research, people tend to visit blogs more often when there are no grammatical/spelling errors. Probably true and I am guilty of not re-checking my blog posts too.

GM and Segway’s P.U.M.A!

Looks like against all the liability issues, GM and Segway has allowed the Gizmodo team to take a ride in their new P.U.M.A.

My first thoughts? I would NEVER ride in that thang, it’s too small. (That’s my first honest reaction.) I doubt that people over 200 pounds can even fit in that thing nevermind getting stuck. But a great idea, sorta the next-level version of Segway. To me it seems more like a miniature version of a golf cart or one with just two wheels.
