One of these days when I own my own house, I will surely build my own backyard deck. (and document every step on this blog) But for those of you lucky enough to own your house and don’t have a deck (rather just cement), see this great article on how to build a backyard deck.

Pretty nice, eh? Two hard winters and one backyard wedding later, it still looks great. Even though the dogs have worn a path down the middle of it while charging daily from the kitchen to the back of the garden to have some stern words with the neighbour’s cat. Oh well, nothing a liberal application of decking oil won’t fix.

I guess using liquid draino isn’t the safest nor environmentally sound choice and for bathroom sinks, you might just be able to unclog your drains/pipes simply by cleaning the U-pipe attachment. Not a bad solution plus it will save you some money buying that toxic, chemical stuff or calling your local plumber.

The steps of this instructable show you how to remove biological mysteries from your sink’s drainage without using caustic chemicals that cost money, are bad to breathe, less fun and whose success as an unclogging strategy has a lot of uncertainty.

My bathroom sink is simple enough that the pipes and pop-up assembly do not require any special tools to take apart and put together. The only tool I employed besides my hands was an old tooth brush.

I remember when I lived in South Korea for a year couple years back, there used to be a bunch of bars where the walls were pasted with DIY newspaper wallpapers. Of course, they looks sorta nicer, it wasn’t just pasted randomly but looks “clean”.

I think this is a great way to make any room in your home “vintage”. Even better, you might be able to make a wallpaper out of all your old photos somehow, that would be more awesome than your digital frame that’s pushing out only 1 image per second.

you can make wallpaper out of anything from newspapers and magazines to color copies by applying them to the wall with polyurethane (one coat underneath and one on top to seal the paper).

Here’s a rather interesting hack that involves a regular lawnmower converted into an RC lawnmower. Brilliant!

This should make lawnmowing much more fun. Better yet, your kids will have a blast cutting the lawn.

This instructable will show you how to make your Arduino into an R/C interface that you can use for just about anything requiring remote control. I will also show you how I built an R/C lawnmower using my Arduino, a cheap R/C transmitter and receiver pair, and a couple of electric-wheelchair motors from Ebay. I have used this interface to control anything from basic LED’s to Bipolar stepper motors, mini-robots, lifeless R/C cars from the thrift store, and even a 100lb lawnmower (all with appropriate motor controllers). It is very flexible and easy to change and very simple to set up.

Bug DIY – How to Make a Fruit Fly Trap!

Fruit flies are common all over the world. Of course, you will need to learn how to deal with them so you can get rid of them.

One of the best ways is actually to leave your unfinished wine glass (with wine) where the fruit flies are. I find this method the most effective but my girlfriend told me that the fruit flies will suffer while “drowning” in the wine. Which is true and perhaps inhumane so I stopped doing that.

Another way to make an easy fruit fly trap is to leave an unfinished beer can (with some beer) where the fruit flies are. Again, this method will “drown” the fruit flies although you can’t see them drowning since beer cans are not see through.

Of course, there’s also this fruit fly trap you can make over at instructables.

No matter what, any fruit fly trap will cause at least some kind of pain while the fruit flies die. Perhaps this is going very far but “life” is considered important in buddhism. I am not a buddhist but I have started killing less insects. I used to kill a whole lotta spiders, but now I grab them in plastic bags and let them free outside, something my girlfriend taught me. Before, I wouldn’t think twice before killing an insect. Now, I think twice because if the insect isn’t really harming you in any way, certainly there’s no reason to kill it. But yes, I will still kill Black Widow spiders on sight, I have no regrets about them and surely God will understand.

Remember, think of it in the insects’ shoes. What if you were an insect, you didn’t harm any humans but they squatted you simply because you were annoying?

Something to think about in life, just my 2 cents.

For those of you who want to build a Dyson vac-like vacuum with cyclonic vacuum feature, you might want to check out this DIY that shows you how to make a cyclonic vacuum. It ain’t anywhere like a Dyson but it may serve as a good alternative if you don’t need all the bells and whistles for paying couple hundred dollar on a high quality vacuum.

A cyclonic separator is used in workshops to keep larger cruft out of the dust collection system. The airflow inside a separator creates a vortex that flings heavier bits and particles to the periphery of the chamber, where they settle out the bottom, while relatively clean air escapes the vacuum port at the top. This makes for fewer filter changes and a more consistent pull from the vacuum.

Well, do not worry as there’s a cool hack that shows you how to make a remote garage monitor so you can check it anywhere including your iPhone or Palm Pre.

Also, you can probably add a simple relay and open/close the garage door remotely.

Problem: My garage is detached from my house, difficult to see if the doors are open from the house. Or maybe I am in a hurry to ride to work and forgot to close the door.

Solution: Parallax BS2 based monitor. I can check the status of my garage doors form the web, and with a plugin to Nagios I get paged if it open more than 15 minutes.
