Balding can be one of the most traumatizing experience for men and women, especially if they care for their hair. Of course, as for me, I think it’s perfectly okay to be bald, perhaps you would look more “mature”, not that I am bald anytime soon.

For those of you looking to stop balding, there are remedies such as rogaine or propecia, both of which are not natural but may stop/cure balding.

Most of balding is caused by your genes so if your parents are bald, you would probably go bald someday. My dad is balding slightly, he’s now slightly over 60 so it seems I have another 30 years to go before I reach his point or NOT?

Of course, you may want to seek natural remedies for balding. For that I’ve heard scalp massages (where you massage your head with your fingers and circulate more blood) might help. Also I have heard from my hair stylists while I was in Korea that simply washing your hair and drying it properly often helps too. Too often hair loss can be caused from dirty hair. Like your face, you might want to keep your head clean, isn’t that common sense? For one, don’t go to sleep without taking a shower if you’ve sweated profusely.

I also did some research and there’s even a way to stop hair loss by applying fresh coconut milk on your hair. This seems to make sense but I wouldn’t go further.

Would you put horse shit on your scalp if it proved to stop hair loss? I hope to God no, just be natural, if you are going to be bald, just accept it and perhaps girls would find your shaved head even more manly and attractive. Please don’t spend a dime on hair growth products, although I am sure someone is becoming a millionaire this second due to people who spend money on that. (Instead, donate that money to the homeless society please!)

Of course, last but not least, don’t stress yourself, relax!

Life is too short to worry about your hair (or scalp), if you think that much about your outside appearance, perhaps it’s time for you to work on your inner ones first.

Here’s an awesome hack involving a cellphone and a microscope! An engineer has made a DIY cellphone digital microscope that can actually be pretty darn useful. I think this hits the sweet spot that perhaps, many of our smartphones can be recycled as devices such as these. Kudos!

Now an engineer, using software that he developed and about $10 worth of off-the-shelf hardware, has adapted cellphones to substitute for microscopes.

“We convert cellphones into devices that diagnose diseases,” said Aydogan Ozcan, an assistant professor of electrical engineering and member of the California NanoSystems Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, who created the devices. He has formed a company, Microskia, to commercialize the technology.

In these days of high tech gadget, I have no idea why every bathroom scale doesn’t come with an SD card slot so it will automatically record your weight over time but here’s a great hack showing you how to make a smart bathroom scale that does all.

On this project I hacked a digital bathroom scale, for write (log) my weight variations over time, on a memory SD Card. I write the information (time date + weight) on a comma separated values (.CSV) file so I can quickly build a graph using OpenOffice, Gnuplot or some other capable program.

I think this gadget has a lot more possibilities going on forward, great DIY.

Tony Quan was diagnosed with ALS in 2003. The disease has left him almost completely physically paralyzed except for his eyes. With EyeWriter Tony can now draw with his eyes.

Well, Toyota has just announced a fully-capable brain-powered wheelchair that you can control with your favorite human body part, the brain! I too, wonder when we will be able to drive a car with our brains but the wheelchair is no small feat for sheezy.

According to Toyota, the company’s BMI technology has advanced to the point where it’s practically instantaneous (the delay is just 125 milliseconds), is 95-percent accurate and will adapt itself to any user’s thought patterns. I have to admit to being bitten by fleas for like a 6-month period while I was watching my friend’s flea-ridden dog, flea bites are nasty and they can make babies pretty quickly and take over your whole home in just matter of weeks.

Anyways, I am glad THAT is over but I found an interesting article that shows you different ways you can get rid of dog fleas, all using natural substances. My favorite is the garlic solution, I happened to smell really bad after eating a lot of Korean BBQ, that will definitely work even on fleas. I am sure all these methods work on cats too.

1. Household salt. Sprinkle it all over the house and let it sit for a week or more. Apparently fleas don?t seem to like salt. Your dog will lay on the carpet and the salt will get on his coat. A short time thereafter the fleas are gone.

2. Talcum powder to get rid of fleas. Cover your dog with baby powder or talcum powder. The powder will smother the fleas and kill them. This all-natural flea remedy is often recommended for puppies who are too young to be exposed to any flea chemical. You can also use baking soda.

3. Olive oil solution. For the fleas on adult dogs, you might want to try an olive oil solution. Start from the dog?s head and work your way to his tail so the fleas don’t move to the face. People say that the fleas just drown in the olive oil and fall out. Then just shampoo the dog fleas down the drain. This can be a pricey solution and your dog will smell like a salad..

4. The Garlic solution. Some people swear that garlic is the best all-natural dog fleas remedy. Some people use a garlic pill supplement while others use freshly chopped garlic and mix it into the dog food. The fleas don?t like the scent emitted through the skin of the dog after he ingests garlic.

Believe it or not, people in South Korea have been going kinda crazy with gold-plated toothbrush. I recently saw one at my local Korean supermarket in San Francisco, then my mom gave me an authentic gold-plated toothbrush she brought over from Korea. (Thanks mom!)

Well, I do already have an automatic Oral-B toothbrush (which seems to be the craze of America these days) but decided to give the gold-plated toothbrush a try and it worked like a charm.

In fact, the gold-plated toothbrush works so well, I feel it does outperform the Oral-B toothbrush.

Anyways, don’t get jealous, you can probably get one over at you local Korean market or maybe you can get one of your Korean friends to get one for you the next time they go overseas.

It’s hard to believe such a good toothbrush is still only available in South Korea. Well, I hope this blog post will help bring it over to America soon, far behind in tooth technology. :p

Btw, I am blogging live from my rented condo in Lake Tahoe, California. I did snowboard a bit today but probably will go hardcore all day long tomorrow and hopefully hit the half-pipe and big jumps too. Keep your fingers crossed that I am alive at the end of tomorrow, I tend to challenge myself a little too much.

My connection is a little slow but I got my Sprint Blackberry hooked up as a broadband modem. If I can blog, it’s a good thing.

When I first came to America at the age of 9, I (didn’t) experienced sleep walking due to fatigue and culture shock for about 3 hours. Good thing my mom was around to protect me but if you want to know more, read up on sleep walking here.

Unemployment may be causing more sleeplessness for most people, that’s just fact of life.

Better than ear plugs, these new Pop Pillows might do the trick for giving you noiseless nights in your bed.

If you’ve recently birthed a new baby, make sure your baby sleeps in correct positions, there’s been a lot of infant deaths due to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), which basically means your baby can suffocate.

Also is interesting to note that Zolpidem may cause sleep walking and other paranormal behaviors while you sleep.

Here’s great news for helping out the needy in 3rd world countries, it’s the fact that egg beaters with handles as shown above can be used as centrifuge for seperating plasma from blood. Now, try using one of those Black and Decker automatic egg beaters and you got a perfect centrifuge without spending thousands of dollars on centrifuge machines! Sometimes, hard problems can be solved with simple solutions.

The low-cost centrifuge replacement can separate plasma from blood in minutes, which is used in tests to detect lethal infectious diseases responsible for half of all deaths in developing countries.

George Whitesides and colleagues at Harvard University, US, say the plasma obtained is easily good enough to use in tests to detect diseases such as Hepatitis B and cysticercosis.

“The object was to separate serum [plasma] from blood using readily-obtained materials in a resource-constrained environment,” explains Whitesides.

The equipment can be bought from shops for around two dollars. It needs no special training to use, no electricity or maintenance, and can be sterilised with boiling water and reused.

The user can even prepare several samples at once – just by taping more lengths of tubing to the beater.

After the amputation, that same part of his left brain would have been sensory-deprived and thus ready to adopt duties of adjacent sensory areas, such as those for the right arm and possibly his face.

Here’s a really neat idea, a solar powered fridge for camels so you can keep all your drinks while traveling with the Camel. This was actually primarily for transporting vaccines in the hot desert areas but heck, I’d use it to cool my beer too.

In transit, the lightweight, foldable solar panel powers the camel-pack refrigeration system. Once the camel convoy arrives at the remote health clinic site, the panel can be used in combination with larger solar panels to provide power for the health clinic. A foot-powered system provides backup and provides light in the clinic during extended operational hours when solar power is not available.

Navevo has released their new GPS capable of helping disabled citizens more than your iPhone GoogleMaps. I guess the bad news is that this GPS is really custom-made for U.K. as of now and we probably won’t see them in the states. (but I might be wrong, please feel free to correct me as always)

This GPS’s distinguishing feature is that it displays many special parking spots, and 20,000 Blue Badge POIs as well as 60,000 other POIs. Navevo teamed up with PIE (Public Information Exchange) to help discover and add disabled parking lots to their GPS maps. These NAVTEQ maps cover all 150 major cities and towns in the UK, as well as the Republic of Ireland. While it might not seem like a big deal that Nascar is implementing random drug testing, we can see that heroin-addicated Nascar drivers will definitely benefit from the cause.

In a similar incident, PGA Tour players have been rumored to use steroids to hit the ball longer. Whether that’s true or not, PGA Tour officials did not wait to find out and also did implement a random drug testing not too long ago.

What I am afraid is if someone takes a strain of steroids as medication such as asthma and get “punked”. But I am sure that would work out if the Nascar driver explained it beforehand.

Well, more random drug testing means more money for drug testing equipment manufacturers!

May we suggest that you start a such company now?

Okay, here’s a fun question, how many Nascar drivers you think will show positive for dank? (lol…i bet at least a couple but then don’t they have that body cleanser???)

Check out this awesome prototype Robotic Wheelchair that the MIT researchers have been working on and it might just change the way physically-challenged people get around town.

The Robotic Wheelchair uses voice commands to navigate the wheelchair itself (which is nothing new) but what is interesting is the fact that the Robotic Wheelchair will remember the places you go such as your living room, the bathroom, etc…etc…

In other words, it has enough intellect to “remember” the places you go.

Unlike other attempts to program wheelchairs or other mobile devices, which rely on an intensive process of manually capturing a detailed map of a building, the MIT system can learn about its environment in much the same way as a person would: By being taken around once on a guided tour, with important places identified along the way. For example, as the wheelchair is pushed around a nursing home for the first time, the patient or a caregiver would say: “this is my room” or “here we are in the foyer” or “nurse’s station.”

Personally, I have a very bad eye sight which means basically I can’t see anything more than 12 inches away from my eyes. And, as a swimming fanatic, I used to have bunch of prescription swimming goggles.

Although I stick to contact lenses and swimming goggle combo these days, here’s a great way to make prescription swimming goggles from your old glasses.

Cindy came up with this simple and great idea to make her own prescription goggles for only $12, saving hundreds of dollars compared to buying a pair from the optometrist or dive shop. If you have an old pair of prescription glasses, you can probably make a pair of these for cheap, and in only a few minutes.

I have once played golf with one of the executives at AMD and he was telling me that future of computer chips are in organic chips sorta similar to human brain.

Well, here’s one of the first signs of that, a robot controlled by rat brain!

The robot’s biological brain is made up of cultured neurons which are placed onto a multi electrode array (MEA). The MEA is a dish with approximately 60 electrodes which pick up the electrical signals generated by the cells. This is then used to drive the movement of the robot. Every time the robot nears an object, signals are directed to stimulate the brain by means of the electrodes. In response, the brain’s output is used to drive the wheels of the robot, left and right, so that it moves around in an attempt to avoid hitting objects. The robot has no additional control from a human or a computer, its sole means of control is from its own brain.

Chocolate, Is it Bad for Dogs?

If you are a dog owner, you might have heard that chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Well, according to sources, it is toxic, but not unless the dog eats a certain amount. In other words, chocolate may have to be treated sorta like alcohol for dogs and do in moderation.

We’ve all heard it, “Don’t give your dog chocolate it will kill him”. We’ll how true is it you’re probably wondering. Do I have to rush him to an emergency vet if he ate one of my M&M’s?

The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.

The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.

The Nokia Loopset simply plugs into your hearing aid to allow wireless bluetooth connection to your PDA or cellphone.

Its “Wireless Loopset” is a device designed to hang around the neck that basically turns a t-coil-equipped hearing aid into a Bluetooth headset. In addition to providing the wireless connection, the Loopset includes such features as vibrating alerts and single-button dialing, according to Gearlog, and willl also work with cochlear implants.

Yey, cure for cancer has been found! It will simply be matter of time before this procedure gets properly documented and used worldwide to cure people with cancer.

Scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle concentrated on a type of immune system cell called a CD4+ T cell.

From a sample of the man’s white blood cells, they were able to select CD4+ T cells which had been specifically primed to attack a chemical found on the surface of melanoma cells.

These were then multiplied in the laboratory, and put back in their billions to see if they could mount an effective attack on the tumours.

Two months later, scans showed the tumours had disappeared, and after two years, the man remained disease-free. The new cells persisted in the body for months after the treatment.

Here’s a guy in Germany who gets his hips sawed off then a remotely controlled rod implanted in his legs as shown above to lengthen his legs.

I remember my mom telling me about these new hormones that could help kids grow taller about 20 years ago now you can do it with a simple (or should I say risky) surgery.

Only 4,000 people in the world have done this so far so there is no telling what kinds of side effects there are. If any, you should expect some pain when you age past 50.

Now, if this thing is successful for the next decade, we could even have NBA players who might get this surgery done to add couple more inches and edge to their game. Heck, there’d be thousands of other sports professionals who might take “advantage” of this.

He spent seven days in the hospital and the next 10 weeks, the lengthening phase, at a nearby residence. After the surgery, a sticky blood mass called a callus—the beginning of new bone—formed on each of his broken femurs. Jeff’s job was to click a remote control that signaled the rod to telescope out one millimeter a day, stretching the bone callus with it. He describes the feeling in pubescent terms, as “an intense growth spurt.” Then, during his last six to eight weeks in Germany, he waited for the bone to knit together and harden in its new, longer form.

Here’s a great concept CPR resuscitation pad that might work if the pad itself was adjustable for people with different sizes. But yes, having one of these handy might be real useful for any heart attacks.

Proper application of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can increase the chances of a victim surviving by up to 50%. Designer Ryan Helps (yup, really his name) has addressed this issue with his “CPR-PAD” design. When applied to the chest, this monitor/aid shows the optimal way to push the chest correctly, clicks when proper pressure is achieved and flashes the power light for proper rhythm.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 5 (UPI) — Alcohol cuts the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis by up to 50 percent, but smoking increases risk, Swedish researchers said.

Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, assessed environmental and genetic risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis among 2,750 people taking part in two separate studies.

Holy shit, now he’s showing a video of a guy using the arm using only his MIND. He learned this technique in two days, but Dean says it was more like the system learned how to interface with the human.

Looking at what he’s doing, the guy drinks and people applaud. It’s been two days. But the amazing thing is that he’s put the cup down so it’s become a lower brain stem function in two hours of doing cup functions.

Imagine not being able to do something as simple as hold a cup or a newspaper, or shake someone’s hand. These are all daily activities which are now possible for a local vet, for the first time in four decades, CBS station WBZ-TV in Boston reports.

Karl Chapin, 59, demonstrated his new state-of-the-art bionic arm at Hanger Prosthetics in Leominster.

Unlike his previous electronic hand, this new “I-limb” actually has tiny sensors which allow Karl to move each finger independently. “The fingers wrap around it like a regular hand.”

Here’s a new underwear that senses blood pressure. Maybe there’s some nice uses for this in the medical field.

However, researchers have recently found that a person’s “pulse wave velocity” is closely linked to blood pressure. This is the rate at which the pulse pressure wave passes through the blood circulatory system.

Sensors sewn into the waistband of a person’s underpants can measure the rate of this wave, consumer electronics company Philips has discovered, and could be used to calculate blood pressure for as long as the garment is worn.

There’s a new generation of bandages coming that accelerates healing using electric fields. One of those concepts is called HealFast which is specifically design for diabetic patients. Diabetics often experience chronic ulcers and pressure sores so a new bandage had to be designed to address those issues. HealFast can be applied with just one hand. Place the pad on the wound, press down and peel off the surrounding paper guard. This activates an electric charge that generates a very weak energy field. This field prevents infection in the surrounding tissues so the body can concentrate on sealing it.

This is great news for myself since I wear contacts and have a very bad -10.5. (I can’t even get Lasik because my eyes are so bad!)

Well, just in case my cornea goes bad….that’s what I meant….

Working with other colleagues in the EU-funded CORNEA project, research scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP in Potsdam and the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Regensburg have found a solution. “Our artificial corneas are based on a commercially available polymer which absorbs no water and allows no cells to grow on it,” says IAP project manager Dr. Joachim Storsberg.
