DIY Robot Ramen Replaces Chef in Japan!

Here’s an interesting story of a ramen-making DIY robot that can make up to 40 million different flavors of ramen. As an avid eater of Korean and Japanese ramen, this is the most perfect idea for making ramen as robots can do them flawlessly, there’s no reason why anyone ever needs chefs for ramen anymore.

The ramen-making robot was built by 60-year-old shop owner Yoshihira Uchida, who spent about 20 million yen on its construction. Customers can place their orders on a computer in the shop, customizing various aspects such as the levels of soy sauce, salt, and richness of the soup. Uchida says there are 40 million different flavor permutations.

The noodles themselves are cooked by a human, with the robot creating a perfectly blended soup which is then delivered to the human chef via a conveyor belt, who adds the noodles and toppings. The whole process takes only about two minutes, a minute shorter than instant cup noodles. Prices of ramen per bowl are 500 yen for regular size and 300 yen for small size.

Iron Skillet DIY – How to Season your Cast Iron Skillet!

If you happened to own a cast-iron skillet like me, you will want to “season” the iron skillet every once in awhile to get the iron skillet perfect and ready for your next delicious meal. Apartment Therapy has some great pics and instructions on how to do that which isn’t too hard considering all you really do is put some vegetable oil on the skillet and “bake” it in your oven.

1. Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees.
2. Wash skillet with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly.
3. Apply a thin coat of vegetable oil, or vegetable shortening with a paper towel on all surfaces, inside and out.
4. Place in oven on center rack, upside down. Place a baking sheet or a sheet of foil on the rack beneath to catch drippings.
5. Bake for an hour, then turn off heat, open door, and allow to cool inside oven before removing.
6. Skillet is now ready to use.

I’ve actually done this a million times, make french fries from scratch using real potatoes. It’s actually a great way to make french fries as your fries will end up tasting very fresh and homemade.

Of course, I have to point out that after you cut the french fries, make sure to store them in the freezer right away if you are not going to fry them as they will turn brown and not taste as good.

Easy fast french fries made from scratch! These are the best fries you will ever have.
Season them to your taste – salt & pepper? Curry? Cayenne and chili powder. Fresh garlic. Grated parmesan. Spicy mustard. No matter how you trick out these chips, they’re guaranteed delicious.

One of my other foods while drinking wine is Prosciutto, other than smoked salmon. (Honestly, I think they taste very similar) I have never heard of it nor taste it before one of my Italian friends showed me on a trip to Tahoe. It had the addiction rate near any other hardcore drugs out there and ever since then, I do enjoy eating a lot of Prosciutto whenever my wallet can afford it.

Anyways, I’ve always been wondering how they make this proscuiutto, basically pig ham cut into very thin slices.

Here’s a couple resources you can check out on making prosciutto yourself, I just want to know how they do it but would probably buy at your local authentic Italian meat shop.

Thai Food Hack – How to Make Thai Pork Salad and Thai Shrimp Salad!

The other day, I had the please of making Thai Pork Salad and Thai Shrimp Salad for dinner, I took some pictures so you can learn how to make “authentic” thai salads too.

This is my favorite food to eat when I am drinking rice wine or soju and highly recommended if you are into spicy foods.

Here’s some Thai language lessons before we begin here:

Yam-Muh-Yuh means Thai Pork Salad while Yam-Koong means Thai Shrimp Salad, where “Yam” means “Thai Salad” while “Muh-Yuh” means “Pork Sausage” and “Koong” means “Shrimp”.

Before we begin, you will need the following ingredients:

(Asian Pork Sausage)

You will first need Asian Pork Sausage, which can be found at most Chinese markets. This is essential ingredient so try to get the authentic one.

(Raw Shrimp)

For fresh taste, I highly suggest you to get some raw wild-caught shrimps. The brand I got was “Master Catch”, these are actually shrimps from Thailand, I got lucky since I can now make the food even more authentic. I got these at my Lucky’s so you might be able to find them at your local supermarket too. (I think a lot of shrimps in America are imported from Thailand, great for Thai cooking.)

(Green Onions)

You will need some green onions, 3-4 green onions will do.

(Thai Chilis)

You will need these Thai Chilis to make the salad spicy.

(Limes)

Don’t forget Limes, you will need about 3-5 of these.

(Cilantros)

Cilantros are the main “vegetable ingredient to this Thai Pork Salad and Thai Shrimp Salad.

(Onions)

I got red onions because they make the salads taste a little sweeter but you can use regular white onions too.

Also, you will need some fish sauce. For authenticity, get the “Tiparos” brand from Thailand, you should be able to find these at your local Asian supermarket. (or Amazon has them too here.)

Once you have all the ingredients, chop them all up, you should get something like this:

Also for the shrimps, take the skin off and rinse them well. Then dump the raw shrimps in boiling water for about 3-5 minutes until they are cooked. Pour out all the hot water and set them aside as shown above.

Cooking!

Once you have all the ingredients cut up, simply mix the green onions, red onions, cilantro, chilis in with the cut-up pork pieces and the shrimps.

For Chilis, be careful how much you put in as it can get very spicy. You can set aside some of your cut-up chilis and add them later if the salad is not spicy enough.

Now, squeeze all your lime, about 4 half-pieces on each of the Pork and Shrimp salad bowls.

Pour in some of the fish sauce now, (about 4-5 squeezes) and then mix up the salads.

After mixing, taste it.

If it’s not spicy enough, add more chili.

If it’s not sour enough, add more lime.

If it’s not tasty enough, add more fish sauce.

Keep doing this until it tastes just right for your tongue.

(Thai Pork Salad – “Yam Muh Yuh”)

(Thai Shrimp Salad – “Yam Koong”)

This Thai Pork Salad and Thai Shrimp Salad should be good for about 2-4 people at most. You can always double/triple the ingredients for larger parties.

Also note that these Thai salads are only tasty and good about 5-6 after making it so if you are going to make it, make it right before you eat, fresher the better. (sorta like Sushi)

Seaweed has always been a big food group in my life, due to the fact that Koreans love seaweed and its everywhere in the ocean in Korea.

Now, seaweed does have lots of nutritional goodies like vitamins and they are like the ultimate vegetable from the sea, something the land can’t offer with its mass-produced crap. (unless it’s organic and local, well, still…)

My mom grew up in a small island in South Korea, where her family were the richest sea farmers on that island. (It’s called the Namhae Island here) Her dad (or my grampa), had a big ass boat and they used to catch everything from sea urchins to big tuna fish. One of my mom’s sisters is actually a politician (like a Senate) on the island now!

During those days, my mom and her 10 sisters would dive to the bottom of the sea and bring up lots and lots of fresh seaweed. (and other natural sea ground inhabitants)

Now, you can always dry the seaweed and hibernate it for later use or cook it in a soup right away.

So, there’s really no way to “make” seaweed but yes, seaweed is all good and all natural.

Did you know seaweed is one of the main ingredients in ice cream?

For vegetarians, this might be a great way to add a good sea menu to your diet. For everyone else, you should really look at seaweed as the “vegetable” of the sea.

Thai Food Hack – How to Make Som Tum Papaya Salad!

Due to my indulgence in authentic Thai food (mostly caz my girlfriend is Thai), I love eating super-spicy authentic Som Tum, a salad consisting of Papaya as main ingredient.

Anyways, if you want to learn how to make this, I know how but there’s already an article on how to do it here.

Pound the chilies with garlic thoroughly in a mortar, follow with dried shrimp and pound again just for softly. Add yard-long beans, papaya, carrot into the mortar. Pound to be crushed.

Add tomato and roasted peanut, and use a pestle and a spoon help to mixed up together in the mortar.

Season to taste with palm sugar, Thai fish sauce, lime juice and tamarind juice into the mixture, stir well. This step you can try and see if anything you want to add more…some like more sweet, some like more sour.

And finally you will get Som Tum Thai serve with sticky rice (if you have) or can have like a snack with fresh vegetables like Chinese cabbage, cabbage, yard-long beans. Or some people will have it with roasted chicken and cool beer depending on your suitability.

Have you ever made butter? Thanks to modern technology, it’s almost an effortless process. I remember doing it twice before: once in kindergarten and once at my grandma’s house using a neat little butter churner. In kindergarten, we passed around a small jar of cream and shook it. Just when you thought you arm was going to fall off, you passed the jar to the classmate sitting next to you. At some point, the teacher pulled the lid off of the jar and we oohed and aahed. Butter.

Wow, check out this cool DIY on how to make your own Tetris brownies. Now, where did I put that concoction for those pot brownies???

Who doesn’t love Tetris? Fit the tetrads (or tetrominoes or blocks) together the best you can without any spaces. Keep the game going by forming unbroken lines that disappear to steer clear of building the blocks all the way up to the top of the screen (this action = game over). This is one of the only video games I have ever really enjoyed (Super Mario and Guitar Hero excluded). I remember when my classmates and I figured out how to load Tetris onto our TI-83 calculators in high school. This discovery made math class much more fun.

My first job ever was at Pizza Hut where I took orders, made pizza, and delivered. It was probably the most fun job I ever had as I got to do everything including making myself some custom pizzas at the end of the day.

I’d still work at Pizza Hut if they paid me more than what I made now. Make sure to tip your pizza delivery guy right, I always tip at least $3 and $5 when i have money.

Anyways, Pizza Hut launches their new Adobe Flex App, it’s basically a desktop app that lets you order your pizza faster.

Well, I was chatting my friend Jason over at BlogTomic.com and telling him about the breakfast I was cookin’ this morning, which was egg scramble. Well, as soon as he heard me cookin’, he got hungry too and decided to share some pictures of his secret recipe, “Egg-inside” pancake!

what i do is. do like you are going to make a sunnyside up egg. then pour your pancake batter around it . cook it on one side then flip an cook on the other

As you know, the team of moonlighters at Zedomax.Net has been working on new paid wikis. We belive this concept of paid wikis will blow up soon and we have just started diggin’.

I stumbled onto this Mister Wong Bookmarking site. It looks really cool…maybe we will make one like it.

Mister Wong is Europe’s largest portal of its kind, with over two million visitors per month. The service was founded by Kai Tietjen in March 2006. Though it started in German, Mister Wong is meanwhile available in Russian, Chinese, Spanish, and French. The German version already has over two million linked websites saved by its users.

Check out FixYa, it’s a sorta like a RSS Feed search Engine.

(Spy Stats: FixYa.com has PR6 and has 1680 backlinks on Google. Pretty good stuff.)

Meaning it will pull up hundreds of relevant articles for the topic, “how to fix something”.

Interesting if this is sign of Web3.0. = RSS + Wiki + Blog + Optimized Server Code for Search.

Maybe someone will quickly think of hooking up a Wordpress blog with the MediaWik…

Anyways, FixYa just looked great to me from the get-go. I think it’s the homepage that makes difference between sell and no-sell…

It seems like Twitter.com and BbPress are having something in common. They are both simple and support tags and RSS and works with Wordpress Database.

It would appear if you were to take notice of the rumor mill, that there are some serious items going to be on show for the Xbox 360, here is just a sample:

* New Crimson Skies game to be announced
* Bungie working on new title/series not related to the Halo/Marathon Universe
* Epic Games to show Gears of War 2 Trailer
* Microsoft has bought the Star Wars Battlefront 3 rights. Trailer/Demo to be shown
* Rare to show off Banjo Kazooie 3 (Banjo-Theerie?)
* Rare to announce 2 new games
* Rare to announce Kameo 2
* Lionhead Studios show more of Fable 2
* Microsoft to fund a new game based on Jason Bourne. It’ll be based on the books and not the film with Matt Damon
* Team Ninja to show off Ninja Gaiden 2. Labeled 360 Exclusive
* Apparently there’s news of a MGS Game for the 360. May or may not be the 4th Installment
* Dead Rising 2 to be shown. May not be ready

We will have to wait until July 11th to 13th 2007 to see if the rumors all work out, but this is interesting to hear thing like this.

Wow, a solar powered steakhouse?!? Great job you guys!

Ted’s Montana Grill in Tallahasee, Florida is the first restaurant based chain to install and use solar power.. This restaurant is owned by Ted Turner and is an eco-friendly restaurant in a chain of 49 restaurants in 18 states, “menus are printed using recycled paper, no plastics are used in the restaurant and soft drinks are served in recyclable glass bottles“.In all the popular restaurant has “installed 44 panels on the upper roof and 22 panels on the patio roof — 66 panels total. The panels supply about 5 percent of the restaurant’s energy needs”.

Wow, check out this Dark restaurant in Beijing, China where you must eat all your food in total darkness and waiters/waitresses wear night-vision googles to find their way around… I guess there a Dark Restaurant in Australia and in Germany too where some of the waiters are blind.

The first dark restaurant in Asia is officially opened on the 23 December 2006. This restaurant, located in Beijing, China, has its interior painted completely black. Customers are greeted by a brightly lit entrance hall and will be escorted by waiters wearing night vision goggles into the pitch dark dining room to help them find their seats. Flashlights, mobile phones and even luminous watches are prohibited while in this area. The meal will be taken in this environment with the complete loss of vision. By starving one’s sense, your other senses are stimulated to full alert – all so the theory goes – and your food will taste like it’s never tasted before. We have been messing around with Pligg, a digg-like social CMS (content management system).
First we made wagthis.com hosted on Dreamhost but after running for a month the shared server seems to go down a lot.
Since then, we made a new one with better hardware on wagg.it.
(It took us like a month to register the domain name through a european registry but we were finally able to get it working…)

It’s a blog voting community where you can submit your blog posts and other bloggers can vote on posts. It’s still experimental at this point but check it out and if your blog post in on there, make sure to wagg it!
